The usual
Portland forgets to come out of the locker room for the game, spots Denver a big lead and starts chipping away. LMA, Trout and Roy are on. Blake is having a bad game so far.
Which I kind of expect from the bench, not our starter.
But it is what it is. I’d love to see Billups in a Blazer uniform.
You didn't expect Billups to be a problem against all our PGs tonight?

by Billy Ray Bates on Mar 5, 2009 8:55 PM PST up reply actions
I don't expect Blake to make bad decisions
Cross court passes? Mistimed passes?
Bayless only had one possession against Billups
then Dante Jones came in. And hit a jumper in Bayless’ face.
"It's like, 'Urrrrrrgh!'" Rodriguez says, his cupped hands turning into fists. "It is a good feeling. Good feeling."
Was that before or after his jump-pass to Denver?
(Though in all seriousness, I should have said “against Denver”, not Billups)
hey
you’re better than this. I respect your opinions because you praise Sergio, and don’t focus on the other PG negatives. Don’t become the Bayless hater Sergio lover.
draft dejuan blair
i was just pointing out Billups didn't burn Bayless
"It's like, 'Urrrrrrgh!'" Rodriguez says, his cupped hands turning into fists. "It is a good feeling. Good feeling."
no
but he will. Bayless is over aggressive and will get beat because of it.
Long term though, Bayless and Sergio are a terrific platoon. Not fun to watch right now, though.
draft dejuan blair
Tough game.
Portland shot terribly, struggled on defense. Clawed back to 6 right before the half, and boom JR Smith hits a near-half-court shot.
I could not wait to leave that 1st half behind

i gotta say
i’m following the game on the cbs gamecenter thing, and for a while it just said ‘x misses jump shot’ over and over again. his short chart was all from the outside until he got that dunk.
I was thinking, you know
maybe that Charles is right after all. I mean the teams have split the series so far this year, and Denver is half a game ahead in the standings. Half a game up. They have to be way better!

Blake drives me batty
he gets into his own head so much that he passes up open shots and can’t make good passes.
Two plays stand out to me
1) Down by 2. Blake misses a 5 foot wide open shot on a break
and
2)After Blake nails a three to make it 62-60, he leaves Billups open for a three
Now it's personel

Im really starting to dislike Blake after the last two nights..
when he’s not unconscious from three point land, he’s a pretty bad NBA player
Portland is by far the most frustrating team in the NBA
there is no other team that has this much talent but can be so inconsistent…makes me want to pull my hair out
persistence is the key
There's actually a lot of teams like that right now.
I think it’s just that we see us play so much. Outside of the big 4 (CLE, LA, BOS, ORL), almost all the teams are maddeningly inconsistent right now.

Not surprising
We played DEN on the back end, then DEN plays Utah on the back end. Utah was the benefactor to this situation the whole time.
No Center = No Win.
This is another game where a trade for Salmons and Brad Miller would have been VERY useful. There have been a few of them.
Pontiff of the Pryz for Prez Posse...
except then we'd have brad miller
that in itself would be bad
We have two weak points:
1. We need a TOUGH back up PF. Outlaw and Frye don’t count.
2. We need a starting PG. Blake’s defense is embarassing.
I hate TiH.
I've heard about him, but I don't follow college ball at all. I really don't know much about any college players except for the obvious stars.

that's dumb
you think we need to get nasty to win? we’re 100000000000 times as dangerous if we play it cool. everyone learned that in kindergarten
Uhhhh....ur wrong....
The last time we got nasty was when we beat the Celtics at home and teabagged KG. I miss that
Pryz was on the bench, he's the closest thing to an enforcer that this team has got....
Pontiff of the Pryz for Prez Posse...
Im a little pissed that nobody on our team got a tech tonight.. there were alot of bogus calls and no calls against us..
not to mention the Denver players showing us up constantly.. somebody needs to get in the refs face or take a hard foul on an opponent one of these days
That was one game. I don't know why everybody loves this kid. He has crazy intensity, but his jumper is horrible and his court vision isn't that good at all. He can attack the basket, but we don't need an offensive PG on
our championship teams. That’s what LA, Broy, Oden, and Marty are for.
I hate TiH.
He was being played as SF on the offense tonight, which is NOT CLOSE to anything he is capable of doing. His jumper is sub-Sergionian.
Pontiff of the Pryz for Prez Posse...

Collins on the Sergio-Bayless yo yo
I agree it seems to be having an adverse effect on Sergio. I think Bayless should be the primary backup, but now it looks like Sergio is pressing. It would probably be best for him if it was all his or all Jeryd’s (kind of like Frye, not so hot in limited minutes, can give you something if he’s in rhythm).

Blake's absence had a weird side effect on all three players
Blake saw them play decently, rushed back and got re-hurt.
Sergio settled into normal playing time and stabilized for a bit.
Bayless had a shot hot stretch.
Then…
Sergio saw Bayless and changed his approach (more driving/finishing) but has left him off balance.
Bayless got scouted and became ineffectual until he adjusts.
Blake immediately came back on fire to show he deserved to start, but seems to have flamed out.
Now all three feel like a mess.
I think it’ll all settle down later this season though.

That or somebody is really to going to have to get in these players faces! What happened to all of the hunger we used to have after losses last year? Don’t you hate losing!? Doesn’t it get under your skin? Doesn’t it make you want to win? Try to hold on to that for every game. Gosh. I wanna scream form the rooftops, you need me to get in these guys faces I will. Portland needs an upgrade at point guard in the worst way...
Sergio and Bayless are not cutting it.
On a brighter note, IF Oden comes back, I predict we will be decidedly better on the offensive end.
We need his presence in general.
Not just on Offense. His defense is also something we need plus his rotation with Joel. We lose offensive rebounds without him in.

The Blazers aren’t top 4 material in the western conference. Getting into the playoffs is what should be expected and that’ll be an accomplishment.

People need to remember what the expectations were going into the season – play hard, develop the young guys, win 50, make the playoffs in the 6-8 range. I am excited about our chances to meet all of those goals.

If we play them like we played Denver tonight
at home on the road, it shouldn’t matter. I’m skeptical.
Well, we can count on something to like comming out of Utah mananna...
Preferably Denver playing the role Portland played tonight.
We need our backup center back in action.
So, Nuggets defend home court against Blazers comming off back to back in their de-oxygenated house – we can handle that. The thing is we did invest a lot in Greg, and it hurts when we don’t have our 2nd big man available in the paint. We have that role reserved for him. We that on the floor. Not blaming anyone, just sayin’.
Well, we all knew the Blazers were going to lose tonight and we were right. We are smart. Better luck next time. Peace.

well that was predictable
I guess I shouldn’t be upset because it was so predictable, but it sure would be nice for these guys to play like they expect to win a tough road game at least once.
LMA and Roy laughing on the bench at the end of the game said it all— they never expected to win.

Maybe Denver managed to sneak some nitrous into the oxygen tanks that the team
has to resusitate players at high altitude… Or is that against the rules ??? (oxygen, that is …)

Can't play tough when you play a non-aggressive style of basketball
Blazers play passive offense and defense. Nate doesn’t instill that toughness into the players because he’s more cerebral. So is Roy. Blazers need a guy who will instill that toughness on the court and play a more aggressive style of basketball.
The cake is a lie. Do not bake it.
the difference on D between the two teams was amazingly striking
Nobody on our team brings energy to the game the way Nene and Anderson do. Not even Joel.
Boomshakalaka
Denver actually plays S.O.S defense from the Sonic days
Get in passing lanes, double aggressively, and meet the dribbler. The Blazers don’t play that style of defense because of personnel and coaching.
The cake is a lie. Do not bake it.
its both
Its true we don’t have a Nene or an Anderson, but Karl gets guys like JR Smith and Carmelo to play pretty good D, whereas smart, athletic players on our team like Roy and LMA often look lost out there.
Boomshakalaka
When you think back to those Sonic days
They had GP and Nate on the perimeter. We are not even close to having that kind of guard defense.
Billups isn’t too shabby himself.
Hello Dum Dum
youth and lack of a good PG defender is part of it, for sure
but I refuse to accept the idea that Nate is doing as well as we can expect with this group on D. There’s too much talent on this team to be so dreadful defensively.
Boomshakalaka
This is where we completely disagree
I don’t think we have as much talent as you do. I see a lot of potential but not a lot of talent. D is something players learn. The tendency of players, the reads of offensive sets, the correct rotations, and recovery are all skills that experience lends itself too.
In my honest opinion, Nate inspires better play from the players we have than inhibits them.
Of course this is pure opinion and I’d never assume I can convince you of this, but I just go by my eyes and history of watching the NBA game. I could be wrong.
Hello Dum Dum
Nate is an above average overall coach in my opinion-- I like him and I want to keep him
I just think his “great defensive mind” reputation is undeserved.
Boomshakalaka
You're right
it’s odd that he has been tagged that way. He never has really coached a great defensive team, yet he has always been called a defensive minded coach. Maybe it’s the scowl on his face.
The one thing Nate has done is taken a team who’s average age would tell you they shouldn’t even sniff at the playoffs, and turned that team into a playoff contender.
How often does the 2nd youngest team in the NBA play this well? I’d love to see the stat that shows the average age compared to overall record.
Hello Dum Dum
we are definetely overacheiving on offense (and in our overall record)
and Nate deserves credit for that.
The reason Nate gets tagged that way, in my opinion, is that he was a very good defensive player. There’s nothing in his NBA coaching resume that suggests he’s more of a defensive coach than an offensive coach.
Boomshakalaka
Nate has built a very nice offense for a young team
keep the place slow which can eliminate many turnovers, move the ball, take the shot if you’re open, and let Roy take over when needed.
Luckily we have Roy. I couldn’t image where this team would be without Roy. I give Roy sole credit for making the playoff race exciting. Without Roy the West would be an 8 man game, as the baby blazers wait for Oden to become their savior. (No disrespect to Oden, I just love we aren’t dependent on our number 1 pick to make the playoffs)
Hello Dum Dum
I'm still trying to figure out
who to blame this game on. I need an individual to place sole blame on or I’ve lost as a fan.

Trade him
An admission: After the OKC game, I said some things. Stupid things. Things about Nate not knowing how to coach GO. It was only then I realized that I was in danger of becoming that which I most loathe - an uninformed, knee jerk fan who reacts to wins with wild delusions of championships and losses with trade and firing fodder. I will not be that fan. From this point on I will support the Blazers, the coaches and front office wholeheartedly, offering praise and criticism appropriate to the matter at hand. I will never again be "that guy".

Here's the deal.
Back to back killed us but we seemed like we a) didn’t want to play or b) knew from the beginning it was a Loss. Which one was it? It was a poor effort from our Blazers. Unfortunately, I’m never sure who to expect when we play? Recent example: Pacers. Should have dominated right? ON the road now, I think we’re going to have it horrible this year. I’m gonna say 16-25 on the road. Blah I don’t want to say any more, I’ve gotten so detached lately it hurts.
Probably accurate
with the road record prediction. However, I didn’t see a team that was playing like they didn’t want to win or was expecting to lose — I saw a team that was tired after winning a hard-fought game the previous night. I also saw a team, with the exception of Roy and maybe LMA, that seemed pretty intimidated by the “toughness” of Denver’s players. I think Portland will eventually get a swagger, defensive intensity and mental toughness after they get some playoff experience and KP makes a smart move or two during the off-season.
Portland will definitely make the playoffs this season, but we really shouldn’t have such high expectations for Portland when they’re playing on the road against a team that, while flawed, is still much more experienced then they are (especially when Portland is on a back-to-back).

A little disappointed...
with this game tonight. I’m also a little irritated with the mentality of how we approached this game, as blazer fans, and maybe perhaps the team as well. Meaning, we didn’t expect to win this game!… or somewhere along those lines. Call it back to back games mentality, away game, or youth, but to me, that’s just an EXCUSE! What about the mentality of EVERY GAME COUNTS… especially at this point! I can tell Nate had the mentality (thanks to inside-trax by TNT) But Doug Collins mentioned it very clearly in the game that in order to survive in the tough western conference, you have to beat good teams from the west, on the road. We’ve played a total of 31 road games this season thus far. We’re 13-18 on the road overall, but 1-13 against top western teams on the road, included with this loss to Denver. OUCH! Well, my point being, is I think this game really showed somewhat about the identity of the Blazers, MENTALITY-WISE. Okay, but Iet me make some clear points… Blazers are in the playoff picture, and will go to the playoffs, despite the seeding. Unless PHX erupts, but highly unlikely. We are projected to win 49-50 regular season games. These are expected! But what needs to be more expected is the mental approach to away games from here on out. I’m sorry, but this has been bottled up inside me for quite some time, and I hope you all can relate. Blazers has been and always will be my #1 team. So let me end by leaving a quote from Steve Blake… “We have to play on the road, like we play at home.”
