The usual

Portland forgets to come out of the locker room for the game, spots Denver a big lead and starts chipping away. LMA, Trout and Roy are on. Blake is having a bad game so far.

Bayless only had one possession against Billups

then Dante Jones came in. And hit a jumper in Bayless’ face.

Was that before or after his jump-pass to Denver?

(Though in all seriousness, I should have said “against Denver”, not Billups)

hey

you’re better than this. I respect your opinions because you praise Sergio, and don’t focus on the other PG negatives. Don’t become the Bayless hater Sergio lover.

Long term though, Bayless and Sergio are a terrific platoon. Not fun to watch right now, though.

Tough game.

Portland shot terribly, struggled on defense. Clawed back to 6 right before the half, and boom JR Smith hits a near-half-court shot.

An admission: After the OKC game, I said some things. Stupid things. Things about Nate not knowing how to coach GO. It was only then I realized that I was in danger of becoming that which I most loathe - an uninformed, knee jerk fan who reacts to wins with wild delusions of championships and losses with trade and firing fodder. I will not be that fan. From this point on I will support the Blazers, the coaches and front office wholeheartedly, offering praise and criticism appropriate to the matter at hand. Collins on the Sergio-Bayless yo yo

I agree it seems to be having an adverse effect on Sergio. I think Bayless should be the primary backup, but now it looks like Sergio is pressing. It would probably be best for him if it was all his or all Jeryd’s (kind of like Frye, not so hot in limited minutes, can give you something if he’s in rhythm).

Blake's absence had a weird side effect on all three players

Blake saw them play decently, rushed back and got re-hurt.

Sergio settled into normal playing time and stabilized for a bit.

Bayless had a shot hot stretch.

Then…

Sergio saw Bayless and changed his approach (more driving/finishing) but has left him off balance.

Bayless got scouted and became ineffectual until he adjusts.

Blake immediately came back on fire to show he deserved to start, but seems to have flamed out.

Now all three feel like a mess.

I think it’ll all settle down later this season though.

So, Nuggets defend home court against Blazers comming off back to back in their de-oxygenated house – we can handle that. Can't play tough when you play a non-aggressive style of basketball

Blazers play passive offense and defense. Nate doesn’t instill that toughness into the players because he’s more cerebral. So is Roy. Blazers need a guy who will instill that toughness on the court and play a more aggressive style of basketball.

youth and lack of a good PG defender is part of it, for sure

but I refuse to accept the idea that Nate is doing as well as we can expect with this group on D. There’s too much talent on this team to be so dreadful defensively.

Boomshakalaka

by jksnake99 on Mar 5, 2009 10:43 PM PST up reply actions

This is where we completely disagree

I don’t think we have as much talent as you do. I see a lot of potential but not a lot of talent. D is something players learn. The tendency of players, the reads of offensive sets, the correct rotations, and recovery are all skills that experience lends itself too.

In my honest opinion, Nate inspires better play from the players we have than inhibits them.

Of course this is pure opinion and I’d never assume I can convince you of this, but I just go by my eyes and history of watching the NBA game. I could be wrong.

You're right

it’s odd that he has been tagged that way. He never has really coached a great defensive team, yet he has always been called a defensive minded coach. Maybe it’s the scowl on his face.

The one thing Nate has done is taken a team who’s average age would tell you they shouldn’t even sniff at the playoffs, and turned that team into a playoff contender.

How often does the 2nd youngest team in the NBA play this well? I’d love to see the stat that shows the average age compared to overall record.

we are definetely overacheiving on offense (and in our overall record)

and Nate deserves credit for that.

The reason Nate gets tagged that way, in my opinion, is that he was a very good defensive player. There’s nothing in his NBA coaching resume that suggests he’s more of a defensive coach than an offensive coach.

Boomshakalaka

by jksnake99 on Mar 5, 2009 11:16 PM PST up reply actions

Nate has built a very nice offense for a young team

keep the place slow which can eliminate many turnovers, move the ball, take the shot if you’re open, and let Roy take over when needed.

Luckily we have Roy. I couldn’t image where this team would be without Roy. I give Roy sole credit for making the playoff race exciting. Without Roy the West would be an 8 man game, as the baby blazers wait for Oden to become their savior. (No disrespect to Oden, I just love we aren’t dependent on our number 1 pick to make the playoffs)

Here's the deal.

Back to back killed us but we seemed like we a) didn’t want to play or b) knew from the beginning it was a Loss. Which one was it? It was a poor effort from our Blazers. Unfortunately, I’m never sure who to expect when we play? Recent example: Pacers. Should have dominated right? ON the road now, I think we’re going to have it horrible this year. I’m gonna say 16-25 on the road. Blah I don’t want to say any more, I’ve gotten so detached lately it hurts.

by dpnim on Mar 5, 2009 10:30 PM PST reply actions

Probably accurate

with the road record prediction. However, I didn’t see a team that was playing like they didn’t want to win or was expecting to lose — I saw a team that was tired after winning a hard-fought game the previous night. I also saw a team, with the exception of Roy and maybe LMA, that seemed pretty intimidated by the “toughness” of Denver’s players. I think Portland will eventually get a swagger, defensive intensity and mental toughness after they get some playoff experience and KP makes a smart move or two during the off-season.

Portland will definitely make the playoffs this season, but we really shouldn’t have such high expectations for Portland when they’re playing on the road against a team that, while flawed, is still much more experienced then they are (especially when Portland is on a back-to-back).

A little disappointed...

with this game tonight. I’m also a little irritated with the mentality of how we approached this game, as blazer fans, and maybe perhaps the team as well. Meaning, we didn’t expect to win this game!… or somewhere along those lines. Call it back to back games mentality, away game, or youth, but to me, that’s just an EXCUSE! What about the mentality of EVERY GAME COUNTS… especially at this point! I can tell Nate had the mentality (thanks to inside-trax by TNT) But Doug Collins mentioned it very clearly in the game that in order to survive in the tough western conference, you have to beat good teams from the west, on the road. We’ve played a total of 31 road games this season thus far. We’re 13-18 on the road overall, but 1-13 against top western teams on the road, included with this loss to Denver. OUCH! Well, my point being, is I think this game really showed somewhat about the identity of the Blazers, MENTALITY-WISE. Okay, but Iet me make some clear points… Blazers are in the playoff picture, and will go to the playoffs, despite the seeding. Unless PHX erupts, but highly unlikely. We are projected to win 49-50 regular season games. These are expected! But what needs to be more expected is the mental approach to away games from here on out. I’m sorry, but this has been bottled up inside me for quite some time, and I hope you all can relate. Blazers has been and always will be my #1 team. So let me end by leaving a quote from Steve Blake… “We have to play on the road, like we play at home.”
