Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Here's the money shot:

The Blazers are the ideal "team". This is a collection of players that when analyzed on paper does not look to impressive. With the exception of All-Star Brandon Roy and very capable big man LaMarcus Aldridge, you have a bunch of journeymen, youngsters and mid-level role players. With that said, this team is still in prime position for a western conference playoff spot and is coached by a guy who does not tend to get the credit he deserves, Nate McMillan. While the Jazz are the leagues second best home team, the Blazers are the fourth best with a 30-7 record. Brandon Roy has continued to prove his case to why he should be considered amongst the NBA’s elite averaging 23 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists per game. While Roy sometimes gets the label as a guy who takes to many bad shots, he has seemed to have corrected that part of his game. A big reason for Roy’s recent upswing as a league star, is due to LaMarcus Aldridge. The big man who played his college ball at Texas is a multi-facet talent. He averages 18 points and 7 rebounds. Aldridge is a great mid range shooter, solid rebounder, above average defender and he shoots 48% from the field. A key player for Portland tonight will be Rudy Fernandez. The Jazz have great knock down shooters while the Blazers have Steve Blake and Rudy as theirs. If Fernandez is able to out shoot Korver that could give Portland the edge they need. This game will be very intense as both teams need it in a big way.

One more thing

I can’t imagine others sharing his opinion that we look like a bunch of scrubs on paper. IMO, we look better on paper, than we really are at this point.

I have never once heard anybody say Roy takes too many bad shots

He’s an excellent mid-range shooter. I’m not quite sure where this guy is pulling his information from.

That was sort of my feeling as well

But he sort of lost all credibility within the first 3 lines. He makes us sound like a rag tag bunch of mediocre players, that were assembled through trades and waver wire pick ups.

I don't know...

that sounds pretty much right on the money to me.

But I don’t think it’s a slam… just honest.

How is it inaccurate?

You don't think our team looks impressive on paper?

Our team was built through the draft. Who are the journeyman on our team? Ruffin? I agree with the youngsters part, and kind of agree with the mid-level role players, but just because everybody is so young. Really, I’d say we have no idea how some of these mid-level players will turn out. We have a number of potential stars including Rudy, Bayless, Oden, Batum and Outlaw. Webster is still an unknown as well.

as far as journeymen go

I think you would put Shav, Blake, and Przybilla on that list too. As for the rest of the guys, they are seemingly all unproven in the NBA. I see where the writer is coming from, we as Blazers fans know where all these guys came from and how high their potential celings are, but if you don’t watch this team all the time how impressed would you be with Batum? Bayless? Martell?

I guess my point is that we can see the future is bright, but right now these guys are unproven and if you just see boxscores, not many of these guys would scare opposing teams and their fans.

by SalemORguy on Mar 31, 2009 12:38 PM PDT up reply actions

I totally understand the "potential" aspect

But we are Shav’s second team. He can’t be a journeyman. Pryz has played on 3 teams, true. He played 4 years with Milw and 1 year with ATL. But this is his 5th year as a Blazer, making it hard to call him a journeyman.

They seems to be

About 3 years late on their analysis. Every response sounds like they are stuck in the past. Udoka hasn’t been on the team for 2 years and they have him in the picture.

Nah

Brandon forces one here and there, but c’mon. That’s silly.

I don't know how I'm reading this completely different than everyone else...

is the link taking me to a different site?

I actually think he praises the Blazers. We ARE the ideal team. We have a two pronged primary attack (Roy and Aldridge) and a slew of other players who CAN put us over the top (Rudy, Travis, Blake… to a lesser extent Batum, Oden, and even Channing). We need 4 or 5 of our guys to be “ON” for us to play well and win, and as we have so many to choose from chances are we will. We lose when we only have 2 or 3 guys bring it.

Right now, are only bonafide true ballers are Roy and Aldridge. Yes, I fully believe that Batum, Rudy, and Oden will be good to great, and yes, Travis has been more consistent, but you can’t guarantee that they’ll come to play every night, whereas Roy and Aldridge are near (nearing?) automatic.

Roy and his jumper… even earlier this year people on this site, die hard Blazer fans (myself included), harped about Roy’s shot selection a couple of times. I can honestly say I don’t recall barking at the TV over a poor shot in weeks, maybe months even… but at the beginning of the season there were a couple questionable shots (think 4th quarter with the game close… you don’t really wanted a 20-foot contested jumper with 10 on the clock, do you?).

He then goes on to praise our team and says to pick them covering the spread!

How is that bad?

just young

Your analysis of the team is wrong. This is a group of coveted, talented young players. Who is this bunch of journeyman you speak of? I will agree that they are an ideal “team”.

Context

Two of the Blazers are journeymen (Blake played 4 years of college ball… he is 29 [no young buck by NBA standards!]; Joel is 29 also), many are youngsters, and all are at this stage of their careers (admittedly early careers in many cases!) mid-level role players. Put those three groups together and you have a bunch.

It’s not a slight; it’s spot on… and they can still be coveted! Neither the writer nor I ever asserted that they weren’t talented or coveted.

I don't think you covet a roster that "isn't too impressive."

Portland’s roster is impressive to those who know the game.

Watch ANY shooting guard in the league and you will see a few ill advised shots; B-Roy has never had a label for poor shot selection.

We’re just a rag-tag bunch of journeyman scrubs who need to put our measly joke of a franchise on our backs and be somebody! We can do it because we play team ball; go Blazers!

by Wotan on Apr 1, 2009 12:46 AM PDT up reply actions

again, context...

he didn’t say the roster “isn’t too impressive.” He said ON PAPER, the team isn’t too impressive.

On paper, 2 guys jump out at you: Roy and Aldridge. Lots of points, good rebounds, assists… they fill the stat sheet up. Blake is on the fringe with double digit scoring and okay assists.

Then, still on paper, there’s a couple interesting players: Rudy and Outlaw. Both have double digit scoring but don’t fill up rebounds or assists… in fact, maybe rebounds and assists are a little low for players with that many regular minutes.

Then a little further down you’ll see a bloc of players with the numbers of solid rotation guys: Oden, on paper, has numbers of a good backup (limited by minutes which are in turn limited by fouls… but nonetheless on paper all you see is 9/7); Przy good rebounds, not good points; Batum low points and rebounds… I’ll stop there as it gets no better.

The stats don’t tell the whole story as several of those guys are playing even better lately or have been out significant time this year. But the stats DO have a years worth of data. Most of our guys show extreme potential and have intangibles… things not quantifiable by a normal stat. But it’s not outlandish to say that on paper we don’t look impressive.

He rebuffs his comment with his “ideal team” statement… as any of those guys can go off and kill you. And he’s right, they can and they do.

I have never heard BRoy labeled as a guy with poor shot selection (except for the few instances by fans I mentioned already), but I don’t know what the scouting report says of him, or what it said of him last year, or what it said of him the year before. He’s only now in his third year and he’s developed mightily, no doubt… so I don’t know about that.

The thing I don’t get is this: he gave a fair and quite accurate analysis of the Blazers and then picked them to cover a large spread over a good team. I’m not sure why everyone is worked up by that.

Give the man his "M"!!!
