"Oden will need surgery, but will try to play through the pain. He'll get surgery on the knee in the offseason"
I was watching Sportscenter, and this is according to Ric Bucher

This is how I see this playing out
Przybilla will be starting the rest of the season, with Oden coming in for spot duty. No point in shoe horning Oden into the starting lineup if you don’t know if he’s gonna play day-to-day. Its about playoffs, not Oden’s development the rest of the season.

Kinda lame that there is no context.
Why did he say that? Was he speaking from his gut? Was he relaying information from a contact within the organization? Was he simply saying “this is the feeling of media personnel?”
Is this news, or an unqualified sound byte?
You posted it as news, and I would hope you could substantiate it with some background.
I heart taxes.

Everything I have heard says surgery is not an option
If surgery does take place it should be arthroscopic. Meaning a recovery time of about a month.

There won't be clean officiating in the NBA until David Stern is forcibly removed by the US Congress in 2013 for fixing games.

If its just taking out a bone chip right on the surface recovery could be as short as 2 weeks I believe.
Personally I wish he would have gotten it to begin with.

yep
hindsight is 20/20, but you’ve gotta wonder if they had scoped the knee right after the all-star break maybe Greg would be pain-free by now?
FWIW, the Portland medical staff has been second-guessed since the days of Bill Walton

How does he know this?
Did he say who his source was? Why isn’t this reported elsewhere?
by JasonT on Mar 3, 2009 1:05 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
it is reported elsewhere. i linked to a hoopsworld article a week ago and got blasted for it. watching PTI right now, and they're talking about it too.
no doctors are quoted, but it seems at least among national media that oden WILL need surgery. I find his answers to ben’s questions today disconcerting (specifically is it the bone chip causing the pain?)
Please, for the love of all that is holy, please stop using the following: "Book it.", "FTW", "Epic" & "Fail".
...no seriously--stop.

I don't see that
I think GO just didn’t want to say the chip is certainly the problem when he doesn’t know that. Presumably, he could be still dealing with the effects of the blow to his kneecap. So he said he needs to talk to his doctors some more. Nothing dire there that I can see.

It was in the Sportscenter
Buzz thing, and one of the anchors just read the quote from Ric Bucher. They didn’t give any sources, just that it was according to ESPN NBA Insider Ric Bucher. I dunno why it isn’t anywhere else, I looked and couldn’t find it on ESPN.com when he said it. Sorry for not having anymore clarification.

there probably isn't a concrete source
it just seems like common sense to me. Athletes get this kind of minor surgery during the off-season to clean up their various nagging injuries, like with B-Roy and his knee last summer. By all reports it should be a minor arthroscopic procedure to flush out the chip. Brandon ended up just fine after his operation, so I don’t see any cause for concern at this point, particularly if Greg has it done early in the summer to give himself time to prep for training camp.
oh man, I think I'm average like, ten points, like, twelve, thirteen dimes, like two, three assists, and about four, five rebounds, and if we need me to play, play a different position, I might get a little bit more.

well
the article/video on the front page of espn.com makes no mention of surgery.
I don’t buy it.

deception..
I’m telling you. We have not been told all the information, that is why there is so much speculation and uncertainty surrounding this entire ordeal.
