Martell Predictions
I believe Martell is getting his boot off today for another "check up". Considering the incredible detail with which his injury has been described all year long, any predictions for the team's press release?
My guess: "Martell Webster was reevaluated by doctors today and will continue to wear a boot for 4-42 days. His status has been upgraded to probable."
I'm actually of the opinion that Webster could still help even if he can't get back until the very end of the regular season. He's the one guy that doesn't need a lot of minutes to produce. If (and it's a big if) his jumper is still there, when the offense sputters you can just run him off picks and get instant points. I'll never forget his huge 3rd quarter against Utah last year.

I am a Martell Webster Believer!
I do like Nicolas Batum, he is going to be getting better and better as his body develops and he gets more and more used to the NBA game… I mean this kid is only 19!
I think that Travis Oultaw is ELITE in the NBA for what his role is and always will be: a Bench scorer, an ELITE bench scorer for that matter. He is a key rotation player who is versatile enough to play the 3 or 4 very well, and his on-ball defense and team defense are continuing to improve, albeit not yet near the level of his offensive prowess. Still needs consistency, but Outlaw is a baller.
I am a Martell Webster Believer! Although i like both Batum and Outlaw, I think Webster is not only the best of this group, and WILL be the best of this group, Martell Webster just missed an entire season of play after he led the team in 3-pointers and showed on 20+ games that he can be a big time offensive option, while showing up every game he played last year TAKING ON the challenge Nate gave him with regards to using his top-notch athleticism to develop great on-ball defense. Martell can slash and Dunk, hit the 3-point shot better than anyone on our roster, and man-up opposing teams top scorers…
But I don’t think he will be able to walk right after missing this much time and have the confidence, swagger, stamina, and explosiveness to do all these things for us this season. Obviously, the sooner the better with him, and if Martell gets in for 15+ games before the playoffs, he may be able to hit stride and be a boost for this team in the playoffs.
I am actually thinking (hoping and wishing) that both Martell Webster and Greg Oden are healthy and hitting stride with our team just before playoffs. This “ISN’T” our year, as the baby Blazers are still young, BUT having every bullet possible loaded in our clip would definitely make it a lot harder for other teams to not get blown up by this teams talent.

manu ginobli is an elite bench scorer. Troutman is an adequate/passable/average bench scorer.
Now, I love me some trout but facts are facts.

I don't know
Manu Ginobli is really more of a good starting scorer…who happens to be brought off the bench. Outlaw is one of the better bench scorers in the league, because he can create his own shot no matter what.

oh man, I think I'm average like, ten points, like, twelve, thirteen dimes, like two, three assists, and about four, five rebounds, and if we need me to play, play a different position, I might get a little bit more.

I´ll be fine if Martell can play the whole next season.
Sergio + Rudy = 16
Sergio + Bayless = 16
Batum 8+8=16

Does Nate know something already?
I noticed in the last few games Nate has played Trout and Nic together. I dont remember this happening much before. Hoping that he is testing out his second unit knowing Martell will be back soon
by RaiderVadar on Mar 3, 2009 10:50 AM PST reply actions 0 recs
It works
Without Oden: LA/Outlaw/Batum/G/G. Smaller unit, but extremely long, it’s had success.
With Oden: This is tougher since LA typically plays into the second unit a bit. Zilla/LA/Outlaw/G/G, bring out LA and go Zilla/Outlaw/Batum/G/G?
We get back into the issue of too many good players, not enough minutes. This also neglects Frye who has been doing well with Sergio as of late.
by Zaig on Mar 3, 2009 11:47 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Great second unit
A second unit of Zilla/Outlaw/Batum/Rudy/ Sergio or Bayless would be very good I think. Zilla and Batum could cover Outlaw and Rudys defensive liabilities and they could cover on offense. Of course, like you said, minutes would be an issue.
Whats the odds on Frye being here next year? Frye is at his best when there is another low post player in the game. He can draw the other teams big man out of the middle with his shot. Problem is we dont have very many low post players. But I do like the way he is playing right now. Those Pick and Rolls to the hoop are more of what this team needs.
by RaiderVadar on Mar 3, 2009 12:43 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
That is one thing I will give Frye
He ran the Pick and roll well Sunday. Sergio/Frye combined for some nice easy layups. I’d like to see Aldridge running that play a bit more often, since his floor game is more than enough to get those layups.
Either way, don’t see Frye getting any PT when Oden/Webster come back. Maybe he can end the year strong as a backup PF and have a little bit of trade value?
by Zaig on Mar 3, 2009 1:43 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Agreed
With a healthy Webster and Oden, Frye wont get much playing time. He is working hard right now for a contract next year. I wouldnt mind him back but dont think it will happen. Will be too expensive to sit on the bench. Not sure about a trade, would have to be a sign and trade I would guess.

Just think if Martell is able to come back this season...
It instantly adds another dimension to both ends of the court, let all the locker room. First defensively, does anyone remember last season? Seems like alot of people have forgot. There was no Nicolas Batum to START and guard the oppostions best player every night. It was Martell and he did a wonderful job all season. Then on offense, he speads the offense, teams respect the man’s jumper. If he doesnt take the perimeter shot he just as good 15-20 feet out. Not to mention he can dunk in your face.
I went to the Wells Fargo Fan Fest this year, granted this was just a scrimmage, the place was electric. You could feel the “ora” this team had about them. When Martell and Rudy were teamed up it was incredible, almost as if they had been playing together for years. Could you imagine Brandon, Rudy and Martell and the floor together. The options they could have with LA and either Joel or Greg inside. That’s why we are the team of the future.
And having Martell back in the locker room is something that the team could really benefit from. For people that haven’t had the pleasure to meet Martell, he is a down to earth really humble kind of guy. Everyone around him can testify to this, he just is someone that you would want around for his spirit and apprecation of what life has to offer you if you work hard. After going through what we have in the past years it’s wonderful to finally have players who care both on and off the court. These are the small but important things we need to remember in the long run.
Now you understand why KP didn’t make a trade, the best is yet to come and we already have it so just wait for the playoffs it WILL be worth it.

Martell + Circuit City (lol them)
A lot of Blazers have bought TVs at Circuit City in the past, back when they were thriving. Derek Anderson and Damon rolled in, asked for the best of everything, and rolled out. They knew they were rich and they knew they could afford anything.
Martell came in one year and did just the opposite. He compared some of the nicest TVs, asked good questions about the differences in the TV, and just chatted with the employees during all this. He also discussed prices with his dad (or uncle or something like that), which for a young guy who has loads of cash is pretty unusual.
Eventually Martell settled on a home theatre system, bought it, and left. This might not seem like much, but even this shows the difference in character between a guy like Martell and a guy like Damon. Martell is way more down to Earth and likeable, and seems a lot less arrogant and flashy. (Off the court, on the court his dunks are wicked.)
Anybodoy can play nice in front of the camera. (All-Star Weekend.) It’s how these guys act in normal setting that show off who they really are. Martell seems like a class act guy in all aspects of life.
PS: I also ran into him at Washington Square once. He was shopping alone, which is also somewhat unusual for guys like him. The boot made me want to cry though. Get healthy kid!

Oh Marty
I’ve been a Martell fan since he came into the league. I don’t think you can have much of a better locker room guy than him. He supports the team, always gives his all, and wears a smile at all times.
I think the most telling sign of his character has been this season when he’s been at games. He always is cheering for the team and being super supportive of all the guys. Late in games that are in hand he even sits on the bench with the rest of the guys to joke around.
I bought a Webster jersey this season, not the cheaper ones either, the actual replica jersey. I’ve worn it with pride to each of the games I’ve been to and without fail I always have someone walk up to me and ask if I know about his status and they always say, “I sure hope he comes back soon, he seems like a good kid.”
Damn I miss the guy.
