Junk Drawer: Favorite Restaurant Edition 3/29
For 2009 I've made a conscious effort to not dine at national corporate chain restaurants like Red Robin...and to dine at smaller local mom and pop hole in the wallish type places. So far this year I've found some really good gems. According to Food Network, and some of the celeb chefs on FN, Portland is among the top 5 cities for dining. Just recently Guy from Diners Drive Ins and Dives came to town and dinned at our best hole in the walls.
So BE...let me ask you, what are your 3 favorite local restaurants, and what is the standout dish that each restaurant serves?

Philthy's 3
Oh man…its so tough only choosing 3 restaurants…it’s almost as tough as finding 3 blazers to hate. I’ll give it a shot with my 3 current favorites…
My Brother’s Crawfish – Crawfish boil – this small restaurant doesnt have the best decor or ambiance, but it makes up for it with damn good NOLA food. The broth that they simmer their crawfish and other various seafood is to die for. The spicy broth is addictingly good…its spicy enough to give the crawfish a kick, but is so tasty that it will keep you coming back for more as the spice starts to become unbearable.
Bunk Sandwiches – Selection rotates daily – I’ve been to this place a few times now, and its amazing how strong the buzz is on this place. If you decide to make a trip out here, be prepared to see a line well out the door. They serve traditional and gourmet type sandwiches, however the traditional sandwiches usually feature some kind of unique twist. They use fresh locally sourced ingredients and they seem to put a lot of thought into creating each sandwich, rather than use the same components with different meats like other sandwich shops.
Podnah’s Pit – Prime Rib/Pulled Pork Sandwich – D,D&D recently filmed a segment here…so BE I suggest you hit this small hole in the wall up before that episode airs and this place gets really packed. The prime rib isn’t a permanent fixture on the menu, but at 18 dollars you get 12 mouth watering ounces of prime rib that is unlike any other you have ever had. You can taste its smokey goodness in every inch of this artery clogger. The PP Sandwich is a permanent menu item and you’ll be hard pressed to find a better version of this anywhere else.

Second!
OK, I’m with ya on the avoiding big corporate chains. I’d have to say Lovely Hula Hands and Pok Pok are the best places, but I couldn’t name the best dish. Pine Street Biscuit sounds pretty good right now for tomorrow’s brunch, just because they do really excellent job with simple breakfasty eggs ‘n’ biscuits. And the next place I want to try is Meat Cheese Bread, for the same reasons mentioned about Bunk (which is also on my hit list.)

I haven’t been to LHH, but I love the Viet Wings at Pok Pok. Funny how you mention Pine State…I was just looking at their website to see if they are open tomorrow.

The first time I went to Pine State
Nate (a North Carolina, i.e Pine State guy) had just been in and was trying to convince the owners to become the Official Breakfast Place of the Portland Trailblazers. The staff was pretty jazzed that Nate liked the place. I though it was funny, considering that they specialize in artery-clogging fare. It’s not exactly health food.
I’d be shocked it they’re not open on Sundays.

If the blazers started
to use local sponsors (IE Fire on the Mountain instead of Buffalow Wild Wings) I’d love this organization even more than i currently do. sadly i dont think local businesses can afford to be big time sponsors.

I wish the Blazers would give discounts for smaller local businesses to advertise.
If there’s one thing I don’t care for with the Blazers, it’s that their advertisers are almost exclusively huge national (or multinational) corporations. I guess Standard TV & Appliance would be an exception.

Chain restaurants are awesome for cheap, uncultured bums like myself, so I give Denny's the nod here.
by AK1984 on Mar 29, 2009 12:46 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Here is my take on them:
You do not go to chain places for good food, you/people go to them because it is safe. They know that they an find something that will be edible and better than what they can make at home, otherwise why leave home? It is called “monoculture,” that is why in almost every town, there is a mall and around is are the accessory stores like Gart Bros, Best Buy, World Market and chain restaurants like Olive Garden, Red Robin, and Chillis, that way you can go from town to town and never feel like you have left your own town, which is crazy.
People do not go to ma and pa places because they do not know if they are good or not and they do not want to pony up $10-15/plate for food that might be bad, it tends to be a pessimistic and not very adventurous view on life, IMO.
Yes you might get a meal that you love and you found your new favorite RR, but in the same token you could find a place where you hate your meal, but even then you still gained something from the experience, you learned that you will not be eating there again!
I always make it a point whenever I go on vacation, to eat at local places. If I can go to it in my home town, I can’t go to it in my vaycay town, fast food notwithstanding because sometimes you just want something cheap and fast for sustenance.
I tend to see food for two purposes
1. For sustenance, you know for energy and to be able to live, kinda important.
and
2. For enjoyment of food.
I like to separate them so I hit fast food for my sustenance and hit the $1 menu cause that is all it is. I dont really enjoy it, but it is edible and gives me energy. I also like going out and getting really good food and do not mind spending $25-30/plate if it is good even if there is not a lot of food as long as it is of high quality, I’ll just go use a few of me free chalupa coupons afterwards if I am still hungry.
Wow that was a little longer than I expected but nonetheless

I would say that a big benefit of a corporate, chain restaurant
is generally much improved health and sanitation standards. In the chains, the layers of management oversight, surprise inspections by District/Area managers, daily cleanliness and temperature food checks, plus the fear of bad PR from an incident encourages a very high level of food safety. Fast food joints have very high standards of cleanliness, for the most part, even if the food sucks. (Yes, as a young lad I managed some restaurants.) The trade-off is artificial atmosphere, forced upsells by servers and uninspired cuisine. Smaller mom/pop places simply don’t have the oversight to guarantee sanitation—an annual visit by the health dept has little or no bearing on daily standards. (Ever seen an episode of Kitchen Nightmares?) There are definitely small operations that have super high standards, but the percentage is lower compared to chains.
That being said, I almost never eat at a chain restaurant. I prefer to roll the dice in exchange for tasty food, unique experience and to support a local business owner.

Yeah you kinda echo what I said
whenever you come back use this site
http://www2.co.multnomah.or.us/Health/mchealthinspect/
it is the Mult. Co. food inspectors report site. You can see which places were not up to snuff, although not to go all philosophical here but generally speaking our food is pretty clean comparatively in the world, so those reports kinda matter to me, but kinda not.
I sometimes find it funny that we complain about going into a FF restaurant and having to wait more than 5 mins to get our food, when people in other countries are like “You can go into places and they give you food in just 5 mins?!?! We cant even get food here.”

Bar Carlo at SE 64th and Foster.
It’s in a nothing part of town, which is why you can get a table there with little or no wait, even on weekends. One of the best breakfasts in the city — certainly the best breakfast potatoes — and awe-inspiring bloody marys. They put big chunks of in-season fresh fruit on your plate not as a garnish, but to actually eat. Self-serve Stumptown coffee. Plenty of space, kid friendly, reasonable prices — and if you want you can go into the next-door waiting area and play pool, pinball or even old-school Nintendo.

Toro Bravo – Tapas – just ate there tonight and it lived up to the hype. Saburo’s – japanese – not high end, just really good. El Gaucho – Steak House – when you happen to find a spare benjamin laying around and decide to go out and get a bite.

Great idea for a junk drawer
For my next visit to Portland and to send my sister some recommendations. I rarely go to chains in Atlanta and love to try new independent places. That’s how we explore the city. It’s amazing how many locals don’t even know certain parts of the city because they aren’t adventurous (sp).
So what’s the best pizza in Portland? I miss the pizza having lived in Dallas, St. Louis and now Atlanta I haven’t even found one place in all three cities that even compare to some of the worst pizza I had in Portland.

One of the best things about Flying Pie

Yum. Pizza is one of my biggest vices.
These places aren’t for everyone, but I’m fine with paying for a flavorful crust, quality ingredients, and not too much cheese:
For deep dish — Dove Vive (interesting toppings)
For thin crust/wood fired - Ken’s and Apizza Scholls (long waits though); Ken’s has better sides/salads al Forno Ferruzza; used to be a food cart by PSU (maybe it’s still there?) but they opened up a restaurant recently

I went to Sparkys before the game yesterday
And that pizza was BOMB. I think Apizza Scholls is the best in the city, but this was a close second (maybe first because of their prices are much better). I had a slice of the margerhita and something really spicy with jalapenos, pep, and a spicy sausage. Both were great. I went to the location on MLK near the nike store (in NE) and I saw that they have a second location on Lombard and MLK.
You could also by whole specialty pies for prices that were at least competitive with Pizza Hut. Cheaper than Pizzicato by a lot I think.

well I don’t get out much for dining, living in Salem where such selections are more a choice of where do I want to get sick tonight? When the happenin spot is a place called Hot Dog’s you know things are backasswards around here.
However this quaint little Asian eatery Hu Dongs or something like that is very good, and I like the clay pot with shrimp (and normally ordering shrimp in a place like this would freak me out.)
When I’m in Silverton working, I like to eat at Los Girasoles, family owned little eatery that provides authentic mexican cooking. I cannot get enough of their sopitas de carne asada. Good service, friendly atmosphere, with real druit ice cream bars for dessert (the mango is my flavorite!)

Ugh
I just “finished” The Macrophenomenal Pro Basketball Almanac by Freedarko and hated it. Without a doubt the most boring book I have ever read. It is basically a Wikipedia of a bunch of non-Blazers NBA guys with some silly stats. I can’t think of any moment in my life where I wanted to waste the time to read six pages about Stephon Marbury.
I tried to read everything up until chapter five, then I had to go into reading a textbook mode and just skim. What is the point of the “When they were mayors” section? I’m just really pissed off that I asked for it for Christmas and wasted hours of my life reading it.
I was going to say if someone wrote something really cool about tominhawaii, that I’d send them the book. I don’t want to waste the postage. Man that book sucks. I’d rather watch NCAA Women’s NIT than have to open the book again.

I had a thought a while ago
I never gave the book a chance. With that said, it did not do anything to win me over. I was confused by a lot of the pop culture references. What does this mean:
When he leaped over 7’6" Dallas center Shawn Bradley in the 2005 playoffs, it was straight-up Planet Earth: a soft-focus osprey snapping necks in midair.
I know what Planet Earth is. I don’t get anything else.
You have to prawctice.
by tominhawaii on Mar 29, 2009 1:15 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I guess he is comparing
the guy jumping over Bradley to some mid-air hunting by a bird of prey….but it is pretty deep and not a very accessable analogy if you ask me. Analogies are supposed to make communiciations clearer not murkier. I usually refer to this effect as someone being “Too cool for school” (basically trying to show off instead of just getting the job done)

Just for grins
I was playing around with Hollingers spreadsheet (off effiency, def efficiency ect….) on ESPN.com. It is sortable and I clicked on the Pace column, expecting to find The Blazers down at the bottom (which I did) but was intrigued by the company we are keeping down there.
The bottom 4 teams pace-wise
27. SA
28. NO
29. POR
30. DET
hmmm….that got me curious about the teams at the top of the list pace-wise
1. GS
2. NY
3. IND
4. PHO
Ah…ok …interesting….slowest pace = 4 playoff bound teams ….fastest teams=No playoffs (at this point)
Kinda disappointing in a way since it tends to indicate that boring basketball is the way to go….on the other hand …it looks like the Blazers are on the right side of te equation stylistically speaking. None of this is a new observation …just thought it was interesting

With Portland the pacing seems idiosyncratic - -
and by that I mean that it a result of the sheer number of rookies and odd rotations, new plays, and such that we at times will just run out of ideas and let the shot clock just melt away…
with the amount of effort coach puts in from the sideline for Portland to push the pace, being in the bottom five would not seem like the goal, but the result of some late clock improvisation, at which this talented group is remarkably adept.

I know it seems that way
but when added to the offensive effiency number (#3 I think) it makes me think that they really must be following the game plan for the most part. Also Nate may be telling them to push it but on the other hand whenever there are too many turn overs …he calls time and yanks the offender out of the game (unless it is Roy or Blake). This leads to some pretty conservative play by the guards

yeah for sure...but if the conservatism comes out of fear...
is the fear of being yanked proving to be productive ? Or preventing flow to develop for fear of taking a shot “too soon” and missing (although missing 50% = start status) or not making a pass to someone cutting who might make an 80%’er layup …but instead passing around the perimeter until someone is forced into a 6 second isolation?
…it’s all pretty interesting….cause the off balance last minute shots that (so many) of the guys are capable of really do cover their butts at times…and blakes inabilty (at times) to overcome a fast defender leads to some over dribbling..but the results are clear…we’re winning, it’s translating into efficiency, and there remains room for improvement even as we move forward to the playoffs

And like Henry Abbott has pointed out
I’d like to see how slow we “really” are, since when we have our multiple offensive rebounding possessions, it counts as ONE possession… so it makes us look a lot slower than we really are during those possessions.
I mean, we don’t fastbreak much obviously, but we ain’t boring to watch. I don’t think we play a boring brand of basketball at all, even though our pace stats put us so low. I think it may be artificially inflated by our amazing offensive rebounding, though still bottom/top ten in slowness.
I’d like to see us run a lot more, for the record, but what we are doing works really well. I just think it’d work betterer if we keep up the LMA fastbreak and push it how Nate wants more.

I checked that out a while ago
We’re still real slow, any way you look at it. I think I had us as the 5th slowest team accounting for offensive rebounds, but still the 5th most “efficient” since you add in extra possessions. It’s all discussed there, though.

This of course actually accomplished 2 things …a freebie on the aniversary thing as well as she has never tried to create a scrap book again. They told me it's a mix of ranch and bbq sauce
It’s a fairly thick sauce though (so it sticks to fries well). It’s normally used with their onion rings I think, but the waitress told me to try it out with the fries, and she was right, it works really well. I never went back to ketchup.
If you ask for it with fries, they’ll hook you up. So hey, it’s free to try.

If you guys get a chance
head out to Pacific City and hit up Pelican Brewery and Pub. They say their Cream Ale is the best but It was OK for me but rather the India Pelican Ale was amazing. I never knew beer could taste like Fruit Loops truly amazing IPA.
We also had the blackened chicken sandwich w/ guac, thick bacon, arugala, pepper jack on focaccia.
The chicken was not rubbery or dry but moist and tasty, the guac was killer and the greens added a lot to it. The bread was killer as it was hard on the outside and moist in the in.
The area is great as well right on the beach possibly one of my favorite beaches on the coast.

I went surfing but didn’t actually surf. Saying" I tried to go surfing," sounded lame. I half-butted it. Once I knew I had no chance in heck of catching a wave, I stopped trying.

yeah a lot of houses looked pretty nice
and they had some fractionals for starting at like $79k didnt look into it much but whatever. It seemed that there was like a total division between really nice vaycay houses and crappy local houses

Yeah that place was OK
I remember hearing good things about it but being a bit underwhelmed, but I cant remember it too well so that is probably bad.
It is somewhat disappointing that there are not very many great food places on the Oregon Coast, Tidal Raves, Pelican, and then there is Mo’s which we go to more for tradition rather than great food.

It is a small chain
but I adore Abbie’s Pizza. I like the original ones in southern oregon (the region, not the BEdger) the best because you can get broasted chicken (pressure fried) and spuds as well as pizza. We stop there whenever we are in Medford or Grants Pass.

I heard that place was crap
I was in Monterey a while ago and most people we talked to that worked down on Cannery said not to go to BG as it was just a tourist trap.
If in Monterey go to either Monterey Fish House or the Fish Wife if you want seafood and Turtle Bay has great Mexi food.
It seems to me that most places in touristy areas of town like Cannery Row or some boardwalk type place do not have great food, they used to a long time ago but once they got big they got fat and lost what got them there in the 1st place.

Thank you everyone!
Just a thank you, because when I bring my wife to town, I always like to take her to good local non-chain places. I’ve been away from PDX long enough that I don’t remember a lot of the local stuff. She’s come to really like Portland over time, and the restaurants have helped. She can’t wait to try Fire on the Mountain.
One place nobody has noted, that I simply can’t resist: The Original Taco House. Powell location preferred, but 82nd is also available.

Ya Hala. It’s a middle eastern place up near Mt. Tabor (I think) and it is crazy good. Kind of a long wait if you go on friday/saturday night, but well worth it.
Also, if anyone is watching the NCAA Tourney, that guitar hero commercial with the college basketball coaches is the best one yet, even better than the heidi klum one.

Grab some Eyrie 02 reserve PN and it will reveal to you gods true will.
Domaine’s Drouhin and Serene as well.
Eyrie pretty much brought winemaking to Oregon and won a prestigeous 1975 French pinot noir tasting event against Maison Joseph Drouhin, whose daughter then came over here and bought land for Domaine Drouhin winery cool stuff.

I'd recomend "40 Gough" in Hong Kong.
A little spendy, but nice, relaxed indoor-outdoor seating, excellent service (super nice owners check in on you) and very very good Western-style food. I haven’t tried the Chinese stuff. they even let our little dog hang out under our table then gave him a bone to take home when we left.

Pretty sure.
All jokes aside, I think it’s in more rural areas that you see dog served. That said, the Chinese have one truly messed up sense of taste. Their favorite pizza topping? Corn.
It’s just WRONG. Canned Corn or corn of any kind has not, I mean NO, business on pizza.
I also saw “frog and eggs” on a menu recently.
I did see a dogs-as-food market once in the very north of Vietnam. makes me sad to this day to remember those little puppies awaiting the butcher.

The New Taste of India, a lunchcart on se4th a couple blocks south of Columbia, I love it in nice weather only because the line is long and the service, not too fast, but worth it, The Greek Deli on Burnside, I dunno around 18th or so – best hummus in town, pork souvlaki with big chunks of feta, Sweet Basil on Hollywood for Thai, best curries. Esparzzas – not a hole in the wall of a secret, but essential. Pizza Research Institute in Eugene, you’ll thinks it’s weird but it will blow you away.
