Also dont u guys wish that brandon roy took it took the rack to get fouled at the end of regulation on monday?  I mean he woulda got fouled or perhaps had a better look than a fade away contested jump shot.   Im really just saying this so I can have 75 words, Im not that busted up about it.

Atlanta and San Antonio

are tied up after 3. A SA loss would be good to drop them down because I think Portland matches up pretty well with them.

yea, It all depends on when manu gets back

I was hoping san antonio would have the second seed locked down so they would take a night off when we play them later.

either way it is tough

LeBron will clearly be a dominant force during most of our primetime years. I don’t know if LBJ gets better by winning or stay better by being hungry.

i also don’t know what will happen in 2010. Besides the whole where he will go thing.. the other thing is who could become his teammate. You know that a couple of teams are dreaming of pairing him up with one of the standouts of his cohort. That could be wicked scary.

The Cavs are in a good position to do exactly that

Green could be so good

But I fear he has the eternal idiot gene.

by Mortimer on Mar 25, 2009 8:01 PM PDT up reply actions

He needs to start playing good defense, otherwise Carlisle never will let him off the bench long

And don’t take all your shots at once, like Dave would say. Not sure he is happy with his time in Dallas so far either, so he might move on again in the summer.

by Norsktroll on Mar 25, 2009 8:05 PM PDT up reply actions

He should be happy to still be in the league

But, being unhappy with actually getting a chance with actual minutes is something unavoidable when ya got the idiot gene, when you’ve already almost played your way out of the NBA even with all the athleticism and potential in the world.

I don’t necessarily see the same in Javale McGee, and I find him more intriguing… though I fear he and Anthony Randolph will ultimately just be new jack Lamar Odom’s… tons of flashes of potential, dominant even at times, shaky consistency both physically and mentally, but always popping up every once in a while with a great game to make you think AHA, THE BOY HAS GOT IT but then back to being Odom.

Green is just another athletic all-offense-no-BBIQ wing, while McGee is a 7 foot small forward style center, wildly athletic could be anything from huge frustration to allstar type dude.

On an overnight train from Paris to Hamburg

I made friends with a Turkish couple, and we talked about the NBA, and the Turkish players. He liked Hedo Turkoglu, and I agreed he’s a good role player (cause that was what he was then), but he kept wanting to disparage Memo Okur.

I kept saying “well, he doesn’t get a lot of playing time (was on Detroit then), he might be okay” but he kept shaking his head and saying he was garbage.

After he got traded to the Jazz and found himself, I wanna email my Turkish friend and see what he thinks now and ask why he was so hard on his countryman. I got his email somewhere…

He has led down the Turkish national team a few times. Maybe hard feelings

And he did develop quite a bit since entering the league. KP got some burn out of the “next big thing” out of Turkey: He acquired Ömer Asik with a free second round pick, and converted him into three more (Denver, Chicago, NY). Then Ömer went on to tear his ACL this year. KP happy :)

by Norsktroll on Mar 25, 2009 9:00 PM PDT up reply actions

I got the feeling

He was trying hard not to be a “homer” for his fellow Turks :-)

Man, we totally Pritchslapped Asik’s ACL! That’s my favorite move he’s made thus far.

go Suns

for the following reasons:

1) if we aren’t safe with a 4 game lead in the loss column on them, we don’t deserve the playoffs
2) if they lose, they are going to be looking at tomorrow as a must win game even more than it already is
3) Always good to be ahead of more teams, which we would be if Utah loses tonight.

How did you guys win that?

He almost never puts the ball on the floor, cause LMA only does stuff he is comfortable with. Now, that will become an element of his game, and will open up his offense even more… but it’s gotta wait till he is sure about his handles.

It was the first time he ever did it like that, and it was beautiful.

In the game he got the concussion, he was trying to drive with the ball, and I worried the concussion would make him think he wasn’t ready. He can do it, he’s just gotta be comfortable and confident in it.

Like his resurgence, to me, is caused by FINALLY taking conditioning seriously AND getting used to being old.

When you’re so used to being an athletically dominant marvel of a man, and ya get old, I liken it to growing a foot over the summer. Things that used to be easy are awkward and wrong. Shaq had to get used to his new old body, and not try to do the old stuff.

He’s playing good, compared to the previous 2 years. Imagine if he took his conditioning seriously when he was young.

most ridiculous poll result

of all time on blazersedge. before Oden has played an NBA game, and keep in mind that he lost a whole season to microfracture at this point, Dave/Ben posted a poll asking if we’d take a Howard for ODen trade straight up before the beginning of this season. more than 60% of people said no.

by BlazersOrBust on Mar 25, 2009 10:11 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm a homer

But I think he’ll be better.

Bigger, better hands, MUCH much much better passer, better touch…

Oden will make his teammates better than Howard makes his.

Right now, obviously, Howard is better and it isn’t even up for debate. I’m still very, very high on what Oden will become (not that you ain’t, of course) to the point where I would not trade him even for the certainty of Howard.

Because I think he’ll be more in the ways that will make our whole team greater.

I think you would have to be pretty insane not to take Howard straight up for Oden if it were offered. I’m a big Oden believer, but seriously, we all hope he can become Dwight in a couple year. by douglast on Mar 25, 2009 10:21 PM PDT up reply actions

It's crazy

But I’m a risk taker.

Howard is a horrible passer and more of a shotblocker than an actual defender. Like the Olympics showed, he is pretty low skill and while Oden is as well, I think his skill potential (such as passing, post moves, etc) is higher.

I think Oden will make others better, more than Howard.

Howard is a bonafide monster, but it’s more me guessing Oden will be as strong and dominant of a shotblocker rebounder, plus better hands/passing/court instincts. I mean, he’s already a better passer than Howard, and he’s still a dumb rookie. We’re gonna have an offense that goes through him, and from what we’ve seen thus far I think it’ll be incredibly successful.

There is no numbers or anything concrete to support my POV, just my gut hunch about Oden. He’s gonna be gooder in the ways that will TRULY matter for a great team.

by Mortimer on Mar 25, 2009 10:21 PM PDT up reply actions

aha

you found my weak spot once you tossed aside numbers and mentioned gut! well done.

I definitely understand your logic; it makes alot of sense to me. But it’s also a very best-case scenario. I think the better thing to ask yourself is, “Can the Blazers win a championship with Howard as their center?” And I think a Howard/LMA/Roy core is absurd. We’d be in the running for a title literally every season for at least a decade. I love Greg, but with Howard we are every bit as much a championship threat as we are with Greg playing at 9 out of 10 on his potential scale (maybe less so than if Greg reaches 10 of 10, I concede) and MORE of a championship threat than if Greg plateaus at, say, 7 or 8.

by BlazersOrBust on Mar 25, 2009 10:31 PM PDT up reply actions

I can fairly easily see the FT-shooting, passing being better and rebounding and shot blocking being equal. But athletically Howard is just a beast, more explosive than Shaq & Co. ever were. He is like a slightly bigger version of LeBron. Not even in college Oden had those hops.

by Norsktroll on Mar 25, 2009 10:32 PM PDT up reply actions

In the pre-draft camp

No one has ever had a higher combo of hops and reach than Oden has. He’s able to get his arms higher-when-jumping than anyone of record.

Howard will be more purely athletic, but Oden’s still-amazing-athleticism and bigger size, plus the better hands/variety of skills won’t make it as big of a gap.

Howard is also not that tall, and once he loses his hops… Oden will still be bigger than everyone else.

It’s not really something I can defend with reason. Just my soul guiding me towards my spirit animal, which looks an awful lot like Oden.

by Mortimer on Mar 25, 2009 10:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Should I be worried that Greg has just two post moves? Turning to the left and through the middle?

He doesn’t turn right when posting up. His hook shot is in early stages. His outside shot not there yet. And he can’t blow by anyone. It can all get along with a healthy off-season of training, but right now Howard is a much more skilled post player.

by Norsktroll on Mar 25, 2009 10:40 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm not worried about that.

I suspect he’ll spend seasons developing his low-post offensive moves.

Even without those moves, his offensive efficiency is ridiculous as a rookie. As he learns how to master the hook, an up-and-under, and understanding how to use his bulk and power around the hoop (and refs stop calling every little thing), among other moves, we’ll barely remember the brick-hook from season 1.

by Timmay! on Mar 25, 2009 10:47 PM PDT up reply actions

One thing he definitely will have going for him is points off offensive rebounds

That’s something he will be very good at pretty soon. His rebounding is so off the charts that scouts still haven’t figured out if he really foresees the ball so well or if he is just so big that he can reach everything. Those numbers have translated perfectly from college.

…He has quicker hands than people think, and since they can palm a ball easy he gets his hands on balls you don’t expect him to get and force it in the direction he wants it to go.

Also, everytime the ball goes in the air, he puts that huge body on somebody, ANYBODY. And, he’s impossible to get around.

Then ya add he has good instincts of where the ball is gonna go, and it combines with his LMA-long wingspan and huge hands and incredibly strong body to become an already dominant rebounding force.

LMA tries to put his body on people, but is easy to get around (which makes him a great offenive boarder, since he is hard to pin down as well). Oden is a terrific boxer-outer.

What I’m impressed with, is how often Oden gets the ball out of crowds. Those are nice hands that will get nicer, and that is something that has to come naturally. Pryz is an awesome rebounder, all the more impressive due to his hands of stone, but he’d be even better if he had Oden’s hands.

Did I mention Oden’s hands yet?

when he'scrashing

the offensive boards, it makes me think of a saint bernard puppy. so big, so strong, and gamboling into everything cuz he hasn’t quite figured it all out yet. I can’t WAIT to see him next year after a full offseason devoted to basketball training instead of rehabbing. I just don’t want to get my hopes up too high, because they were unrealistically high for this season and for that reason I’ve been kinda disappointed. Not with Greg, just with where my expectations were.

by BlazersOrBust on Mar 25, 2009 10:55 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, he's still learning that body

His coordination, stamina, and skill level will all improve immensely as a 7 foot huge big man, even if he stays at this relative level athletically.

A dude that young, that big, that buff, is still trying to put it all together. AND, even being raw as cookie dough, when he is on the floor he is a huge difference maker on both ends of the ball.

I’m very excited about his future and I can’t imagine being anything other than extremely hopeful about his chance of extreme success. He’s got way too much going for him, even if ya just add experience to his current level of athleticism and ‘skill’.

by Mortimer on Mar 25, 2009 10:58 PM PDT up reply actions

Hopefully he learns how to stay out of foul trouble. He already dominates when he’s on the floor.

That is one thing

That is pretty much guaranteed to happen.

The rest— better post moves, improved athleticism, even stamina, are all things I’m feeling will happen but aren’t guarantees.

EVERY center learns how to stay out of constant foul trouble, and the refs learn that player.

EVEN IF ODEN REMAINS AS BAD/GOOD AS HE IS NOW, just being able to play 30 minutes will make him a very forceful player.

I just really don’t think that’ll be the only area he’ll have huge jumps in, but right now it’s the most immediate thing he can improve on that will make huge dividends right away.

I definitely agree

in the abstract with everything you’re saying, and I’m such a fervent Oden backer for the very reasons you’re mentioning.

My concerns are twofold: first, the injuries (duh). They’ve all been unrelated and could have happened to anybody, as I’ve read here a million times and agree with, but to play devil’s advocate — the guy hasn’t been healthy for about two and a half years. At a certain point, it does become a pattern. Not saying I think it’s reached that point, but that point does exist.

And second of all, his attitude. There are dozens of cautionary tales in NBA lore about phenomenally talented players, physically and skill-wise, who cratered because their head just wasn’t screwed on right. I don’t think that’s Greg — he’s had a number of intensive, varied pressures on him and he’s SO young — but the possibility exists that he could add to the litany. I don’t think that’s so, but the evidence to date can be interpreted a couple of different ways.

I believe that Greg will be a monster. But my watershed moment of fandom was the Game 7 meltdown in 2000. It’s hard to fully trust that you’re gonna reach the promised land again with a once in a generation big man leading the way when THAT’S how you get your sports heartbreak cherry popped.

by BlazersOrBust on Mar 25, 2009 11:05 PM PDT up reply actions

His attitude is very hard to diagnose from a distance

And that is before assuming any clinical syndromes, which is just plain made up speculation without a trained psychiatrist having interviewed a person in long sessions.

One can speculate about a few things that lead to his “moodiness”

  • He is not too fond of working with media people, and would rather just be left alone. But he knows that having to be available comes with the money.
  • When he is serious people complain about him being serious. When he jokes around people say he doesn’t take it serious enough. He has stated he feels like he can’t make it right.
  • He seems to miss the camaraderie in college
  • He has troubles adapting to not being the #1 on the team. Not in the sense that he would get aggressive about it, more that he doesn’t know yet when to defer to Roy/LMA and when to go big himself.

by Norsktroll on Mar 25, 2009 11:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Greg's mental stuff

Are different than most cratered-cause-of-their-head types, because he’s smart and genuinely seems to just care TOO much, if anything.

If he was a lil’ dumber, he’d be more confident and not realize he should try to fit in and not do what he wants. He’s too smart for his own good at this stage in his career.

In the long run, it is a good thing. But too many thoughts, when he’s had the bad luck he has had and the expectations put upon his shoulders, is too many thoughts when you’re smart enough to know you’re not the center of the world but not experienced enough to know how to deal with it.

Any other mental case I can think of cratered because of being too selfish, too dumb, too lazy… I just don’t think that comes close to applying to Greg.

I also like to point out how LMA and Roy both spent good chunks of their early career hurt with various ailments, and so do lots of young players. The problem is, Oden is really really good and expected to be the center of his generation, so everything increases exponentially. Obviously you know that part, but I don’t think his start (aside from the micro) is that different from many young NBA players still growing into their body.

If he has recovered from his micro successfully like it appears he has, and all reports say he has, I don’t have much worry injury wise. I just hope his bad luck of injuries ends, since he got past the big one.

Morty

by Mortimer on Mar 25, 2009 11:17 PM PDT up reply actions

The micro actually worries me not that much

I said today already I would be more worried about an ACL injury like with Al Jefferson. Of course it’s not good, but rehabbed correctly (read: give it time to heal) it can add years to your career. That’s why you will see younger and younger players get it, sometimes even already in high school when they diagnose the first knee cartilage damages in big guys (and often overweight relative to their bone structure). Like Spencer Hawes, who even damaged his knee again in 2007 in a training sprint at the same time as Greg. I see nobody running around declaring him an injury prone bust, because he was picked later and nobody cares?

by Norsktroll on Mar 25, 2009 11:29 PM PDT up reply actions

It’s hard to fully trust that you’re gonna reach the promised land again with a once in a generation big man leading the way when THAT’S how you get your sports heartbreak cherry popped.

Trust me, it doesn’t get easier.

If you lived through Game 6 of the 1991 WCF (Magic rolls the ball down the court), or Game 6 of the 1992 Finals (Chicago pulls Jordan/Pippen, and the subs mount the title-winning comeback), if still hurt the same.

The only difference was that entire 2000 Game 6 4th quarter, where you were fearful it would happen any second, only to watch it unfold just as you feared.

Yeah, that was a downer, sorry.

draft dejuan blair

by Cablinasian on Mar 25, 2009 10:43 PM PDT up reply actions

Everything I'm sayin'

Is a prediction of the future, so like I said, I can’t really defend it.

But Oden has a softer touch, better hands, and is more skilled than where Howard was coming into the league. And Howard still has the Shaq line drive hook shot, and relies on pure athleticism more than skill.

I think Oden will have an amazing jump athletically this next season, compared to the early Oden we’ve been getting.

Howard has a pretty bad touch and really relies on being so dominant athletically. That is fine for now, but fades quickly, and his horrible touch around the basket hasn’t improved. He’s a complete MONSTER though, so that lack of skill and touch and pretty turrible passing doesn’t come out much as a problem.

Oden’s softer hands and better touch will equal better post moves, and his bigger body and (once recovered from micro) history tells us his athleticism will mostly return— and he’s already pretty beastly athletically as well.

I ain’t saying I’m right and you’re wrong, because that is unknowable and obviously with what we KNOW know, you are more ‘right’. But I think Oden will become better, and while it is a gamble it is a gamble I am gonna take because I am crazy and it is a hypothetical situation :-)

But for reals, no joke, I do think Oden will be better for longer, and help us a lot more since he does team-centric stuff better than Howard does NOW, even as a dumb rook. That, to me, bodes well for the future.

by Mortimer on Mar 25, 2009 10:47 PM PDT up reply actions

Here's why I'm less worried about winning the division

To win the division, we need both Denver and Dallas to play poorly.

To make the playoffs, we just need either Phoenix or Dallas to play poorly.

  1. has might higher odds than #1 so I’m still focused on playoffs first, everything else second.

by Timmay! on Mar 25, 2009 10:09 PM PDT reply actions

Why do we need Dallas to play poorly?

Didja mean Utah? Or am I missing something and/or dumb.

by Mortimer on Mar 25, 2009 10:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Lemme rephrase

If the concern is just making the playoffs, Dallas and Phoenix are #8 and 9. Even if Portland were to struggle down the stretch…

- If Phoenix plays out of their mind, and Dallas struggles, we’re likely in.
- If Dallas plays out of their mind, and Phoenix stuggles, we’re definitely in.

So, should Portland have any stuggles, we just need one of these teams to struggle.

For the division title, even if Portland plays well…

- It Utah plays outstanding and Denver is only ok, we’re 2nd
- If Denver plays outstanding, and Utah struggles, we’re 2nd.

We need both of these teams to play badly, which is mathematically less likely than the simple “one or the other” alternative above.

So, that’s why I was rooting for Phoenix. I’d rather see Dallas/Phoenix play poorly, and guarantee a slot, than for Utah/Denver to lose, and give Dallas/Phoenix life.

(Did that explain better? I was lazy in my first explanation)

by Timmay! on Mar 25, 2009 10:20 PM PDT up reply actions

by this logic

shouldn’t you have been rooting for Utah tonight then?

My priorities are playoffs first, division second. So I’m always rooting against the 8th and 9th teams, Dallas and Phoenix (if another team falls to 8th, they take Dallas’ spot. Wait, did Utah fall to 8th tonight??)

That’s WAY more exciting than sowing up a playoff berth early, right? So we need the Blazers to lose this game and a couple of more to set up a similar situation and prepare the stage for their dramatic comeback.

How can you work in the NBA, and not use pace adjusted stats? I’m not a stathead compared to most by ANY stretch of the imagination, but it only makes sense.

It’s like when they only look at our raw rebounding amount numbers and think we ain’t good at rebounding. For the average fan, I don’t expect the to know the difference. But a pro?

by Mortimer on Mar 25, 2009 10:55 PM PDT up reply actions

I remember when the NBA finally kept a stat for dunks

They were so proud of themselves.

I do wonder if the NBA will put together a stats group, who primarily sets every parameter to watch and every stat to keep, and makes a database open to all teams (and maybe the public?). That way, every team has equal access to stats to analyze, no matter how they’re doing financially.

Sure, Michael Jordan may still go by his gut, but I imagine some other small-market teams might love to have that data.

Is it the v4000 Laptop?

Hmmm, if so, that’s a Pentium-M or Celeron-M Dothan laptop. The processor is older, but should still be good enough for BE, so I bet that memory is slowing you down. Unless you’re on dial-up, then it’s a double whammy.

I bet during a thread like this, the whole machine is bogging down.

If you’re on broadband, have you tried another browser? (IE, Firefox, Google Chrome and Opera are the big 4 right now). Some of them are less memory intensive than others. On gamedays, I use one browser for BE, and another for everything else.

Alternatively, memory is relatively cheap right now (depending on budget of course), if you can try installing it yourself. Your laptop should handle either 1 or 2GB, depending on the model number. I could track down the right memory if you have any interest.

I may have just repeated a bunch of stuff you already know, but just in case it’s useful info…

Yeah Utah's not a likely title-contender

But that’s how I felt before the season too. They could still reach the second round, but it’ll be real tough from there, and they’d either need to really gel, or get a bit lucky to keep moving along.

I’d never bet against a Sloan team making it to the second or third round, and would never bet in favor of a Sloan team winning a title.

If their fans think they’re doomed simply from this loss, that’s nonsense. They’re in the same position they were yesterday and most of the season: Hoping for a decent seed and a few breaks to go their way.
