Patrick Ewing?

Look at what he did with Yao Ming in Houston. Dwight Howard in Orlando. He can develop big men, as a coach he has proven that. Yao was one of the most uncoordinated centers ever drafted at the 1 spot, but Ewing allowed someone with experience & knowledge

Nate has coached him for a year in Seattle. Paul Allen has the money, why not offer him a job as assistant HC if he doesn't get picked up as a head coach in the coming offseason? Paul Allen has the money.

What could he do for Oden?

I've gotta give you a rec for this

This is exactly right. Mo would still take care of LMA and any other forwards. And he’s an expert on the forward position.

Meanwhile, Greg would learn from one of the best Centers in the last 30 years. I think Mo would happily move aside and focus on making LMA better while

I’m sure that Mo is a pro, he would handle this just fine.

Would get good experience, developing yet another young center on a talented young team. Could be what he needs to leapfrog for a head coaching spot.

Lucas

Has done a great job with LA, but I am not sure about him as a mentor for Oden.

by Air Norv on Mar 25, 2009 5:36 PM PDT up reply actions

The skillset for Center and Power Forward are similar, but not the same

Patrick learned how to use his height and weight to his advantage in the Center position. Mo learned similar things, but for the Forward position, while he had people like Walton covering Center.

Plus Mo played his best ball during a very different era. It was still Center-dominant (while, again, he wasn’t a center), but it was a very different kind of ball.

These comments are absolutely not meant as a negative toward Mo btw. Just recognizing that a true modern center will likely have a better feel for what Oden is going through and needs to learn.

If Patrick was willing to join Portland as an assistant, grab him and don’t look back. He can make his name off Oden’s progress, then get a better job. So it could be to Patrick’s advantage too.

On the bright side, Mo doesn’t have a commercial calling him “Patrick Chewing” so there are reasons for Mo to keep his role.

Its about winning not about friendships

Stan Van Gundy thinks he could coach Oden and the rest of the team too, if they played home games in MSG.

Not sure there is anyone who has developed young centers like Ewing.

by Air Norv on Mar 25, 2009 5:29 PM PDT up reply actions

I guess my point is that

Van Gundy said this stuff because he thinks Ewing should be seriously considered as a head coach. Particularly by the Knicks organization that seems to treat Ewing like a relic and a sideshow to sell tickets. I doubt that Orlando would be happy to see him go anywhere right now anyway.

Agreed.

But as noted above, it could be to Patrick’s advantage to be here as a Center coach as Oden makes progress. It’ll reflect well on him, and it would make him all the more attractive to the Knicks (“Hey NY! Look how many guys Patrick has improved? How could you NOT want this guy?”)

It may just be that Patrick’s best path to the Knicks is not a straight line.

Especially if Oden/Howard become the beasts of the NBA

Yao/Howard just doesn’t have the same ring to it. If he developed Oden/Howard… man o man.

Oden/Howard

If that happened. By then, Magic staff will have figured out Shaq is actually right about Van Gundy. Eventually hiring Ewing back as HC if he is not gone to another team that is developing a young center BUT wants to have him as their HC.

by Air Norv on Mar 25, 2009 9:51 PM PDT up reply actions

Yao

I don’t think Yao was uncoordinated, just had similar rookie issues to what Oden is going through. Although he was considerably less aggressive as a rookie than Oden, but it doesn’t take a ‘great’ coach to get him past that.

"I don’t have the first clue who he is talking about, because all I worry about is Jerome." – Jerome James, on comments by coach Nate McMillan about Seattle SuperSonics players being selfish.

Although he was considerably less aggressive as a rookie than Oden, but it doesn’t take a ‘great’ coach to get him past that.

This is a really good argument. Perhaps Oden doesn’t really need Patrick and will grow on his own. (For example, I’m a believer that Brandon was going to become this good, no matter who his coach was, because he’s simply determined).

But that being said, if you have the option to get a pretty legendary big man, who is similar to Oden in a number of ways, to mentor him, isn’t it in your best interest to grab him? It’s much more likely to help Oden than hurt him. And if there’s any chance Oden will struggle to grow, having Patrick there could prevent that.

by Timmay! on Mar 25, 2009 6:05 PM PDT up reply actions

Get him

if you can…

He wants to be a head coach. Not just coach big men. He has made that fairly clear. Plus, he probably wont leave the east coast. But, Oden undoubtably will grow faster with Ewing helping him. If I could choose a center to be his mentor I’d try to get Olajawon instead.

interesting

(For example, I’m a believer that Brandon was going to become this good, no matter who his coach was, because he’s simply determined)

Does that mean you figure that Nate has not had a significant impact on Brandon’s development or that he has but that Brandon still would have done similar stuff with another coach?

by idoltime on Mar 25, 2009 6:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Good question, I probably should have explained further.

I mean the latter, that Nate (and his assistants) helped Brandon grow significantly, but that another coach/assistant, under KP’s supervision, would have likely provided a similar level of help.

Brandon comes across as a very skilled player with unique talent and amazing desire. I suspect he devours any coaching offered and demands more.

Any coach in Portland would have been afforded the budget (and the expectation from KP) to build a top-notch assistant group and trainers for the young team. The assistant coaches may have been different, but for the most part, every assistant coach in the league is very good at their job. If one was not working well, he’d have been quickly replaced with someone that would. It’s worth noting that our current player development coach, Bill Bayno, had a pre-existing relationship with KP, not with Nate. He was KP’s hire. He might be here under any head coach.

I’ll add a very controversial comment: Under KP’s direction, I suspect Brandon would be just as good today under Mo Cheeks. He’d have a similar budget and supervision by KP. In fact, we might have kept Tim Grgurich instead of Bayno, who was also considered outstanding. Ignore Mo’s other deficiencies for this purpose, just talking player development here. Roy’s numbers might be different due to Mo’s game-time coaching style, for example.

PS- None of this is meant as a shot at Nate, instead it’s a compliment to Brandon’s skill, talent and desire. It doesn’t matter if someone else could have done the job, Nate did do it. That’s always deserving of recognition.

by Timmay! on Mar 25, 2009 7:34 PM PDT up reply actions

It is a fair statement

and I mostly agree. The only thing I wonder about is how the Nate-Roy Seattle connection plays out and if Nate is able to get different things from Brandon, because Brandon grew up watching Nate play for his home team.

I’ve generally suspected it’s a limited effect and figure the organization (and KP) have just as much or more to do with that development as Nate. But still..

I certainly would take Patrick Chewing but....

It’s seems like kind of a long shot. All Oden has to do is be Oden, you have to assume the rest will come with time and actual game experience.

This guy has done it on every level and had a couple of hiccups recently so we haven’t seen that intensity that pretty much goes hand in hand with him, until recently. The one thing that is going to separate Oden from a Dwight Howard and a Yao Ming is his intensity and a, I ain’t your friend mentality. We have seen that in the last couple of games, he doesn’t take ish from anyone, yeah that’s right King James and Jesus shuttlesworth. His strength and determination alone make his upside way higher in my opinion than the other big guys I was talking about. The whole ticky tacky, fouls he has been picking up, his footwork and touch will come. Me personally, I think we got a beast here and championship piece in the next couple of years, but what do I know.

Y'know, that's actually an outstanding point.

I, too, advocate bringing in Patrick Ewing as a big man coach for Greg Oden, but it seems like he’s currently looking for greener pastures (i.e., the head coaching variety); ergo, my assumption is that such a hire is a pipe dream.

I agree

If you want someone to coach Greg (besides Joel), you want someone who will turn him into a dominant low-post scorer. Not just by pushing people around and bowling them over (the Shaq method) but also by having excellent skills.

I still think the guy to do that is Bayno. He’s the guy who taught Zach. If Joel works with Greg on his defense, and Bayno works with him on his offense, I think you have all you need. I’m not sure Ewing or Nater is going to be a better offensive coach than Bayno. I’m not sure either is going to be a better defensive coach than Joel.

We might be able to get either of them to work for a summer with Greg, though. Not sure Joel is going to want to spend all summer banging with Greg and teaching him defense.

He wouldn’t even have to move, he could come down for 2 or 3 days at a time and hold some clinics. It would be great.

How about Bill Russell?

I recently watched an NBA TV roundtable discussion (from awhile back, not sure when it originally aired) that had some of the greatest centers of all time giving advice to Greg. Pretty interesting, informative, and funny. Greg seemed awed and embarrassed to be getting all this attention from these guys. Walton, Russell, Robinson, Ewing, and Unseld (I think, can’t remember for sure). Worth watching.

David Robinson was never a basketball junkie

I’m not sure he’s interested in teaching bball after his retirement. He was great at it, but there were reports that it was never really his passion off the court.

I’m actually a little curious, so I stopped by his wiki. There’s no info about any post-retirement basketball work (unless I missed something).

Want him to come to Portland? Ask him to come for two years to set up a Carver Academy in Northeast, and get Paul Allen to finance it. Maybe he could work with Greg on the side for a few hours a day. Maybe you might tempt him.

The dude is not money or fame oriented any more. He preaches at the church at times, but his name is not even on their website (staff, elders, anywhere), probably because he doesn’t want it to be about him.

I would love Ewing / Robinson / Hakeem...here's why

I think it would give Greg more confidence to have a very specific mentor who was also a great center in the league. I think this would give Greg someone to turn to when he has problems like fouling too much, plus give him a big body to play against. It would help him tremendously with his offensive moves and the mental aspects of being a big man.

I honestly think getting one of these centers to coach Oden personally would be a huge huge value for Greg and the Blazers organization.

If you really want to build a championship team around Oden, show you are serious and go out and get one of these guys on your coaching staff.
