Blazer Post Sixers Loss Rant Post

sorry I deleted the other one. I didn't like the comments by myself or some of the other posting there. I also put Roy and the devil in the same sentence , which some people didn't like ,so ...SORRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyway, just wanted to help facilitate a common place to release the pent up frustration after a tough OT loss at home. Anyone that doesn't like negative comments and rants about their favorite team, while prone to irrational postings and rude insults (im guilty) please stop reading now.

Good call Sophia

Outlaw and Roy were off. Others played well. Just not good enough to overcome the poor first half and some questionable calls down the stretch.

Yeah…Roy had a tough night….but thank god he’s a Blazer. We are so lucky to have him. I expect him to bounce back in a big way.

by JasonT on Mar 23, 2009 11:23 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Roy had one of his most off nights I've seen

and even Aldridge’s high stats weren’t telling of the story. it took him almost 20 shots to get his points. He had a rough time taking it inside as did everyone. Philly owned the paint from posession #1 and the refs let them have it all night. Pryz and Joel did the best they could, but the perimeter D looked like a drive by victim with holes everywhere.

by keepfryealive on Mar 23, 2009 11:28 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

actually aldridge was 9-25, roy 5-18, outlaw 1-6

we were lucky to be in a position to win when our top three scorers shoot like that. yet we could have won. but roy didnt look right all game.

I think Aldridge actually had a decent game

He missed 16 shots, but he also had 10 offensive rebounds. It’s OK to miss some shots if you are able to get the ball back afterwords.

by trk on Mar 23, 2009 11:36 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

i think aldridge played well -- he fought hard

some of those misses he got his own offensive board,

but when your top three scorers shoot so poorly…. it’s hard to overcome. i had a bad feeling when roy went iso at the end of regulation. it just didnt have the right feel. he should have, uh, delegated some authority.

But when you get fouled and miss the shot...

and they don’t call a foul, the shot counts against you. So Aldridges line would have been better if not for Javie and Mini Javie (Leon Woods).

I love that when I watch him now I see glimpses

And I can really tell that the game is moving too fast for him. Once he gets the hang of it. (ala next year) and works on some post moves (this offseason) he is going to be a beast.
Remember the first time you set foot in a varsity game (any of you who played college or HS ball) after playing JV or just practicing varsity. The game moved FAST. You didnt want to screw up with all those people watching. I remember I blew my first layup on a fast break all alone. (started dunking it to make sure after that) And the gasp from the crowd.. ouch. By the end of my first year I had it down and by the time Junior year rolled around, the game was the game, and I was up to speed. but it took awhile.
I see that same look in Gregs eyes. Watching the game last season and practicing are all fine and dandy, but once you get out there.. MAN.. its a whole new world. I cant wait to see what he brings next season.

Just got back

On a positive note. There was some serious glimpses of what this team is going to be like. The 3rd quarter was amazing and there was some serious rim rocking going on in the 4th. Between Rudy’s 8-0 run (I’m the european MVP stallion lay off me, take that 3, oh steal, 2 free throws, oh roy take this tip go get an and 1) Aldridge’s rebound and dunking and Oden’s two huge throw downs at critical times. The RG was off the hinges at times.

the crowd was desperately wanting the players to get them back into it. Rudy did it and amazing almost happened.

Too bad it has to come down to a bunch of bad officiating. I’m not one to complain about the refs, but it was seriously brutal. Leon Wood obviously had some $ on this game.

Denver and LA will be unreal in the playoff home stretch. No matter what seed this team gets. They’re going to play hard and go down fighting in the playoffs.

by keepfryealive on Mar 23, 2009 11:27 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

our team has proven many things

and has surpassed practically everyones expectations. their next challenge is to be focused and prepared for 48 minutes against teams in the playoff hunt. teams will be bringing their A game whether its to close out the season or throughout the playoffs, and we can’t be digging outselves out of deep holes all year.

For quality of officiating

I would say:
 NFL>MLB>NBA>Any Pac-10 sport
I like the NFL because they make rule changes when needed and they are actually enforced most of the time. I don’t know how it can be so hard for the NBA to find quality refs. My high school refs were better and there were only two of them to call the game. With three refs for a basketball game there is not a lot of stuff you should be missing.

by KitIsh on Mar 23, 2009 11:30 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

thats hard to say i think

some sports must be harder to officiate. like bang bang plays and such.

by Blazerland on Mar 23, 2009 11:31 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

MLB is easy to ref

compared to basketball or football.

i would say so

a mlb ump can focus on the strike zone and make the call…where as in basketball and football there is so much going on and multiple calls to make not just strike/ball.

by Philthyanimal on Mar 23, 2009 11:37 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

MLB has a lot of abstract calls ie strikes and balls

but they do a very good job on bang bang plays on the bases. I have actually refereed all sports at a lower level. It is tough to see travels in basketball, but with three top level officials for ten players the quality of NBA officiating should be a lot better.

by KitIsh on Mar 23, 2009 11:44 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

you missed the MAJOR point about the NFL

replay. if they make a bad call they can go back and change it. In the NBA you cant do that on the fly. In the MLB, calling balls and strikes is subjective anyways, because we as fans cant really see the pitch any better.
but yes NBA officiating is just terrible

They do use more replays in the NBA, e.g. to see if a player stepped on the 3 point line

But I don’t know the exact rules and would be in favor for more replays even if that stops the show more often.

by Norsktroll on Mar 24, 2009 12:52 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

right but they can review ANY play in the NFL

and there is stoppage to do it. they can review a few things in the NBA but its only at a break and its a small amount of options. its not like steve javie could go back and you know, make a correct call.

There's a lot of limitations on reviews in the NFL

It’s far from every-play.

(I’d also support more replays in the NBA under the right scheme)

The last couple of minutes were a bummer, but this team doesn't quit.

There are a lot of teams, some of them good, who would have started mailing it in during the second quarter.

They can’t win every game, but they play hard right down to the wire,

Remember three or four years ago when the Blazers were sleepwalking through the season?

by raoulduke on Mar 23, 2009 11:31 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Just go back from the game.....to fight all the way back and then lose it was heart breaking.

Some random thoughts as they come to me:

-Fourth quarter we are up five have all the momentum and Sergio on the break decides to drive into three sixers turns it over and philly proceeds to get a three. We never can maintain anything after that.

-One of Roy’s worst games of the year, a lot which can be attributed to the sixers defense….they match up really well with him. The last possession of the night summed everything.

-It’s hard to say Blake had a bad game when you score 20 but he probably game up at least 40 in shape or form. He was Andre Miller’s bitch the entire night….to an extent that was truly astonishing. It’s been a long time since I have seen one player abused that blatantly and him not being able to keep Miller from penetrating was one of the keys to the loss.

-I didn’t understand our defensive philosophy tonight. Instead of packing in the middle and forcing PHilly to take outside shots our guards overplayed their man and ended up getting beat off the dribble over and over and over

-LMA’s outside shot hasn’t looked right since the concussion. However the rest of the was pretty much awesome. Great game

-Greg Oden was beastly, it really is amazing how good he is and yet has barely scratched the surface of what he can become….too bad our guards didn’t show up

-Rudy played a decent game but tossed up waayyyyyy too many threes, some of which were really bad shots.
-Refs were Horrible no way around it, but they did not lose us the game….that would be guards inability to keep their man in front of them.

- Teams in the playoffs will use this game as a template on how to play us, still if we get a below average game from Roy instead of horrible one, we win

-This game is over it’s time to start thinking about PHX

Penetrating guards

carve us up. Even if they don’t score, it sets up shooters/cutters. This has replaced the pick and roll as the new defensive bugaboo for the Blazers, and unfortunately, this one may be even tougher to fix (although both are similar in that it will take a cohesive team defensive effort/philosophy, rather than having one or two guys “man up” at the deficient area).

I believe in Greg Oden. To all the haters - get down with the program or stay off the wagon for all time. #52

I'll expand!

-Sergio’s aggressive play, along with Oden/Rudy, brought us back into the game and gave us the lead. I heard boos when Sergio came in, but look at the run we made. ONE play went wrong, so naturally that’s the one you call out, ignoring that he got the steal to even give us that play.

-Roy, yeah I can agree with that one.

-Yeah, Blake shattered a career high in shots, but didn’t come close to a career high
in scoring. He also got owned on D, that’s bad.

-See Blake again.

-LMA’s outside shot was okay, he just didn’t get the easy looks that he usually does.

-Yeah Oden did well, but it’s too bad our “Starting” guards didn’t show up.

-Rudy didn’t take a single 3 that I didn’t like. I’d be willing to take 4/9 on 3s 82 games a year. (12points/9 possessions = 1.33 p/100 = best in NBA.)

-Agreed
-Meh
-Agreed

I agree to disagree

- I didn’t say Sergio had a bad game overall, but that play completely killed all of our momentum, you could literally feel the air suck out of the Arena. It was a huge play, because if we execute and score we are up by at least 7.
-Yup
-Yup
-Yup
- I think Aldridge hit two outside shots all game. Yup just checked the shot chart, He took 11 and made two. He missed a lot of wide open shots last night, ones he usually hits.
-Yup
-Actually I amend my statement, though i made this comment because the last three rudy took was a horrible shot and we still had time to work on the shot clock…..this might have been a side vent for the fact that blake took 12 threes
-Yup
-The defense you saw against roy is very playoff like

Just ignore generalities.

Maybe women are a bit more emotional than men – on average. But that is probably more a matter of being willing to express their emotions more freely, not that they lack emotional control.

Besides, it is more than balanced out by emotional toughness. Applications for the priesthood would skyrocket if roles were reversed and guys suddenly found out they were the ones who got pregnant.

I got pretty emotional during the game

does that make me a woman? The emotion was anger, if that makes a difference. At one point in overtime I wanted to take Leon Wood’s head and insert it into Mark Lindsey’s rectum, and then insert Mark Lindsey’s head into Steve Javie’s rectum to create a, sort of, fecal totem, because that is how I felt after two blown calls in a row at such a crucial juncture of the game.

I wish Mike Rice had given Javie the choke sign again.

Oh yeah and to be blatantly sexist, it’s not so much that women are too emotional but rather mentally unstable.

We actually lost because my Brother-in-law attended the game. he has bad mojo and the blazers loose everytime he is in attendance.

I however have only been to wins.

Tonight we both went and let our mojos battle it out. Needles to say his Dark forces were greater then mine.

I won’t let him go to any playoff games this year. He is done.

Adjust the expectations

Blazers are fighting for the 7th/8th spot. Beat PHX, then everything is good.

Sixers are a bad matchup. Blazers played terrible, but still had a chance to win. Need a PG who can run a pick/roll or a SF who can penetrate. Same old holes in the lineup. Roy is asked to carry too much burden on creating offense. He’s probably dead tired.

The cake is a lie. Do not bake it.

draft dejuan blair

Man, that's a tough one.

1a. Greg Oden
1b. Brandon Roy
3. LaMarcus Aldridge
4. Joel Przybilla
5a. Nicolas Batum
5b. Rudy Fernandez

Oden and Roy are franchise cornerstones, Aldridge could potentially be a useful third option on a title contender — although I’d honestly like a slight upgrade at the position (e.g., Chris Bosh), even though that’s likely a pipe dream — and the trio of Batum, Fernandez, and Przybilla should form a serviceable group of role players over at least the next few seasons.

Now, I’m obviously not sold on Jerryd Bayless or Sergio Rodriguez — while I also believe strongly that Travis Outlaw and Steve Blake are fungible parts on this team — consequently, it’s too difficult to rank them. Beyond them, the turnover rate on scrubs is so frequent that they’re impossible to assign value.

by AK1984 on Mar 23, 2009 11:51 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I should have clarified

that I didn’t mean the whole roster, just the core.

I think you have Joel too high. If Oden becomes what he can be, Batum and Rudy will be more essential to the team’s success than Joel is.

Also, LMA is a terrific third option.

draft dejuan blair

by Cablinasian on Mar 23, 2009 11:58 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I strongly hold the position that a ballclub's reserve center is oftentimes more important ...

than its sixth man. In Portland’s case, Joel Przybilla holds more value than Travis Outlaw both now and three to five years down the line.

At the same time, though, I really want to replace Outlaw with a hard-nosed, defensive-minded bruiser at the backup power forward spot — as well as put a more traditional small forward on the second unit at the weakside corner, regardless of whether that person is a healthy Martell Webster or an upgrade at the position (e.g., Mike Miller) — although it’ll take some manuvering to make those changes.

Regarding LaMarcus Aldridge, I’m just not sold on him. In fact, I almost expect him go Charles Smith on Blazer fans come playoff time.

Obscene officiating,

but really heartening to see the blazers dominate the paint. We are going to have to stop relying on the 3 ball some day. Can you imagine having a player that absolutely commands an instant double team? That is what Greg Oden will be sooner or later, simply because of his unreal athletic ability and size. The physical play that is battering our players now will be rewarded with bloodied chins from an Oden elbow here and there.

The little things killed us

The 76ers brought the defensive intensity. Sergio was stupid with his missed three that led to a 76ers 3 at the end of the first quarter. Channing Frye’s defense was atrocious. The Blazers didn’t make the big defensive stops at the end when they needed to the most. The officiating was lousy as well.

Can I buy you a fish sandwich?

I was listening on the radio

And I was thinking about calling 911 because Wheels was about to have a heart attack through the entire 2nd half and overtime. He was riding the emotional wave of the comeback, and then crapped all over the officials for what sounded like horrible calls (at least listening to Wheels on the radio; I didn’t actually see anything).

Hey, anyone else really encouraged by how well Oden played with 5 fouls?

Blazers struggle when they first come back home

Oh Roy… aside for a couple of good steals he had a really poor night on both ends. I would almost have rather seen what Blake, Rudy, Batum, LMA, Oden could have made happen during the last minute of OT. It’s ridiculous that you don’t go with Roy with what he has done, but he was entirely nullified in this game. I would have thought that iggy was ron artest and raja bell combined the way he stopped roy one-on-one.

I've never seen a team win...

…when it was eight on five.

The odds are just too tough. I’d like to know how the Blazers have fared over the past three years when Leon Wood is reffing. Three shots on what should have been an offensive foul on Igoudala? Brandon and LaMarcus completely unable to get a call inside, despite very heavy contact, in OT?

The Blazers did not play their best basketball, but when you are repeatedly hammered and the final foul tally is only 22 on the other team over 53 minutes of play, you have to wonder if some guys in stripes were padding their expense accounts on the results of bet placed on tonight’s action.

I went back and counted 10 highly dubious calls over the course of the game against the Blazers, and three against the Sixers. Are we in Philadelphia? WTH?

People that blame the refs are ridiculous, if you want to see well-called games find a different sport

NBA refs are bad. If you haven’t realized that now, you’re not smart. Expecting a well-called game by NBA refs – EVER – is dumb. It’s like betting on a one-legged man to win a swimming competition.

So enough with the ref whining, my God. If you don’t want to see bad refs, don’t watch the NBA.

Umm

The refs aren’t always bad. They always miss some calls, but that’s the be expected in a sport like basketball.

Last night, the refs were bad. There were other reasons for the loss, but despite a bad game at home, Portland would have won if the refs weren’t bad.

Both GS games, This one, and I think one other.

The Cleveland game had some questionable calls at the end, but they were questionable, not bad, and it takes more than 1-2 off calls to make the refs bad.

Wasn’t it Stern who said the refs are only going to get 90% of the calls right? They weren’t even close last night. Aside from the ridiculous fouls/no fouls they also called THREE plays out of Portland when the Jumbotron begged to differ. Some weren’t even close too.

by Zaig on Mar 24, 2009 10:13 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

By my count I saw 22 horrid calls in the favor of Phili and 3 in our favor.

This was the worst reffed game I’ve seen all year. Though I’ve never agreed to anything LeeRoyJ has ever said (humorous exaggeration) including these two posts, but he does have a point. We know the Reffing sucks in the NBA, we know Stern won’t do anything about it and we know we’ll keep coming back for more. We love the game, we love our team, we can’t give em up just because the NBA is a poorly run, corrupt, profit first business. We should, but we won’t.
