March 22 Madness Gameday Thread

(Updated)

Syracuse already beat Arizona State (ft. a certain McMillan). Xavier beat Wisconsin. Arizona beat Cleveland St. (Jerryd and Channing happy, sorry for the earlier confusion about which school they attended). Pittsburgh beat Oklahoma St. in a game that was a little tighter than expected. And Kansas convincingly beat Dayton (triple-double from Aldrich).

Missouri beat Marquette in a quite dramatic finish (check comments). Louisville beat Siena in a game that was closer than I would have liked (hope Greg is happy that Siena is out now after beating Ohio). And Michigan State overcame USC in a game that could easily have become an upset.

Oh, the NBA was also playing, and in probably the most interesting one for us Houston beat San Antonio in a tight game by 2 (see also comments). Slight slump for the Spurs, who have been unable to close out games recently?

Player watch: DeJuan Blair. He went down in a hard collision with Byron Eaton, but both were able to continue playing. When he was down and the camera zoomed in, you could see big vertical scars on both knees and a smaller one on his right shoulder. I don't know about his injury history, does anyone else?

Another update: Corvid found an article indicating "reconstructive knee surgery" in high school.

Jonny Flynn had another good game for Syracuse

3-6, 4-4 from the line, 7 assists. But at times he was forcing it a bit, reminded me of Ben Gordon. Devendorf was their top scorer.

Bayless and Frye both went to Arizona, if that’s what you been by “have a stake in”

Hmmm

haven’t read about any injury history with Blair… nothing major in college that I know of.

FYI

Found this in a Scout.com article from last Novemeber:

Blair had reconstructive surgery on both knees while at Schenley High School in Pittsburgh, but he had not had any problems since then.

thanks

spurts are build around winning these type of games

go spurs, them winning all of their games this season is good for us, hopefully they get their 2 seed locked down so they can rest against us.

Boo hoo hoo..... Spurs announcers are crying rivers of tears about those terribly unfair officials...

I hope they fade into the 5 seed and lose their home court Tony Parker Favoritism calls… I don’t like those guys, nope nope nope.

Incredible article by Quick

I laughed at the visual of Outlaw trying to grab Oden’s arms. That is insane.

USC - Michigan is staying close

I wonder who will role the dice on DeRozan, who was once the top high school player. Could go either way. Maybe he stays in college longer, which would probably help his game a lot.

Missouri - Marquette down to the wire

Some really tight games, almost don’t know where to look

by Norsktroll on Mar 22, 2009 4:18 PM PDT reply actions

Huge finish

Missouri brings in a replacement for an injured player to take the final FTs with 5.5 to go, hits both. Marquette mental error stepping on the baseline on the inbound play. D’Oh!!!

Every once in a while, there's a tourney year that bores me

It’s feeling like one so far. All the fun upsets are coming up short. Lots of blowouts.

And UW laid an egg in the second round. Grrr.

How, at this point, could anyone root against the Arizona Wildcats making a Final Four run this season?

I, by the way, think that Chase Budinger’s nickname should officially become “No Excuses,” since he looks eerily similar to former Alice in Chains frontman Layne Staley.

Let’s just hope that Budinger’s college basketball career doesn’t fizzle out the same way as Staley’s life, for that’d be a tragic ending to a wonderful run.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
