Outlaw=6th man of the year?

Now, to start this off, the only reason that Outlaw should be considered is the fact that Ginobili has been missing extensive time all season, hurting his chances of winning this prestigious award, but let's get to the argument.

Now, as many of you have noticed, Outlaw has been on an absolute rampage lately. In his last 11 games, he is averaging 16.6 ppg, 5.7 rebs, along with 39% from 3. Now many of us, myself included, have questioned Outlaw and his value to the team, but if he keeps up this production at a steady rate, could he be a contender for 6th man?

Now, for this year, he is averaging about 13 ppg, and 4.9 rebs a game. Not very impressive numbers to look at, but will his late half numbers sway the masses?

Well, shows how much I care about the Mavericks

but let’s hypothetically assume that the Mavs don’t make the playoffs, do you think Terry still deserves the award, even though he was just a good player off the bench on a terrible(In the West) team?

They are 2 games behind the Blazers. How is that a terrible team?

Lower than expected maybe, but they have Josh Howard missing a major part of the season, and he is more important to them than say Webster to us. Terry is the clear #2 on the team this year, in a very similar role to Ginobili on the Spurs.

by Norsktroll on Mar 22, 2009 8:19 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, Jason Terry deserves to win it.

Anyhow, with regards to the Dallas Mavericks starting shooting guard situation, I envision Mark Cuban as someone who may jump on the Washington Wizards potentially available top-three pick in the 2009 NBA Draft. Since Jerry Stackhouse’s $7,250,000 salary next season is only partly guaranteed for $2,000,000, a package involving him and $3,000,000 in cash considerations for an overpaid Etan Thomas and the draft rights to a top-notch prospect like James Harden may entince the Wizards’ cheapskate owner, Abe Pollin, who’s reportedly desperate to slash payroll at almost any cost.

by AK1984 on Mar 21, 2009 11:04 PM PDT up reply actions

The Blazers could do the exact same thing

by taking a contract like Etan Thomas, absorbing it with their cap space. That takes away the two million dollar guarantee that Pollin would have to pay in the Stackhouse scenario.

A guy like you would probably advocate trading Bayless and cash for Thomas and a pick that could make Ricky Rubio a Blazer.

For the Portland Trail Blazers to get under next season's salary cap, the organization would ...

have to renounce its mid-level exception, its bi-annual exception, and Raef LaFrentz’s Bird Rights — which’d ruin the chance of including him in a big-time sign-and-trade deal, à la Keith Van Horn and Aaron McKie last year — as well as not tender the soft Channing Frye a one-year, $4,264,761 qualifying offer, although that’ll happen no matter the situation. The team may have to waive Steve Blake’s non-guaranteed salary of $4,000,000 by 6/30/2009, too, which’d be before the beginning of the NBA’s new fiscal year come 7/1/2009. Lastly, the Trail Blazers won’t have cap space until at least 7/1/2009.

Let’s just say it’d be a complicated ordeal.

by AK1984 on Mar 22, 2009 12:20 AM PDT up reply actions

why?

They could trade Blake’s non-guaranteed deal and Bayless, taking back Thomas and a pick. Washington could subsequently cut Blake, who would subsequently resign with Portland using the mid-level exception.

This is also assuming the Miles money won’t come off the cap via Allen and his team of lawyers.

Any other team and I'd say he'd resign everytime, but

He’s a Washington DC boy isn’t he? He might like to move back to wear the rest of his family is, so that they can be around his son/wife.

by Gelvalst on Mar 22, 2009 7:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Blake is a Portland boy now

Lives in the Tualatin area with his family. His wife loves it here. They own a home here and he likes the atmosphere. I have no clue about all this trade, renounce, mle, bae, stuff. But if it had to do with Blake resigning. He would do it. IMO

I have never heard of a team having to "renounce"

thier exceptions. The point of the exceptions is that they are only available to teams who are over the cap, if your under the cap you can’t sign a player with either the mid-level or the bi-annual exception, you can only use the cap space you have.

Raef won’t give the blazers a cap hold or anything like that as far as I have read under the cba, so renouncing his rights doesn’t seem like something the team would have to do either. WIth 2 huge deals coming off the books, one for 20 million the other for 12+ million, the team should have some room under the cap, how much I don’t know I would have to look up storytellers site and do the math. But i don’t have the time at the moment. What I have posted here is just what the local media has been saying, and as such could be wrong.

but if travis gets more consistent next season he will be on the shortlist for sure

It is clear Travis has CONFIDENCE going in his game right now...

Travis is playing great. I have so much more confidence watching him, watching his shot selection and having the faith that he can get an open shot out of his sheer athleticism. Travis also looks much tougher and more focused on defense.

At this point in Travis’ career, with him being at least in the discussion of 6th man of the year, we Blazers fans must be uber-stoked that this versatile forward is signed at such a great contract and dialed in with the team leader, B-Roy. I think an Outlaw jersey would be a very safe pick at this time… you will probably be able to wear it for at least 6 more years.

I don't watch any other teams unless they're playing us so as far as I'm concerned it should go to Outlaw

But if Terry is coming off the pines and is scoring 20 per then I think we know who’s mantle shall be graced with the hardware

by Blazersaurus on Mar 21, 2009 11:27 PM PDT reply actions

Outlaw is awesome

but what Jason Terry is doing for Dallas in unreal. He’s the #2 option on that team, it would be the equivalent in Portland of LMA coming off the bench and saving games. Doesn’t diminish the year Travis has had, but you have to give Terry his due.

I believe in Greg Oden. To all the haters - get down with the program or stay off the wagon for all time. #52

by blazeraddict on Mar 21, 2009 11:38 PM PDT reply actions

Jet deserves it

Not only does he rack up points, but he is an emotional leader of the team. You’ll be hard pressed to find a more energetic/charismatic player in the NBA today. It’s kind of cheating since he’d be a starter on most any team he played for (ala Ginobli) but his coming off the bench has been a necessary energy point for the waning Mavs. Watch them in any 4th quarter and it’s him and Dirk running pick and rolls since he’s the obvious #2 man on the team (even when healthy, Josh Howard is like the Suns: great until it counts).

Travis might soon be up there but right now he still pulls too many K*be-like hand in the face fadeaways without K*be’s (soul-obviously-sold-to-the-devil) results. I’m fascinated to see how Trout reacts to the pressure of the playoffs. If he can pull his late game heroics there I see it being a major step in his development as a player/mini-star in the league.

by boytexasgod on Mar 22, 2009 3:13 AM PDT reply actions

I dunno

Travis is basically 2% behind Terry in TS%, so it’s not like he’s absolutely bricking a bunch of fadeaways every game.

If PTB win the division

Outlaw is a finalist. Terry still gets it because of his scoring average. But Trout has been just as big to his team as any other 6th man in the league. That includes Ginobli and Terry.

Trout is the #3 scorer. #2 clutch scorer and #2 at creating his own shot. Without Trout this team loses a lot more games.

by keepfryealive on Mar 22, 2009 9:05 AM PDT reply actions

Terry will probably still win it

but their season numbers are closer when scaled for minutes and pace with Outlaw scoring ~17 and Terry 20. Not that it matters as sportswriters do not care about things like minutes and pace adjusting and I believe that is who votes on 6th man of the year.

Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.
