Back Up Point Guard "Battle" - Hollinger Weighs In...
"One interesting position battle I'm watching is for the Blazers' backup point guard position, which is rapidly degenerating into the battle of which young guard can be the most disappointing. Sergio Rodriguez held down the job much of the year but lost it a few weeks ago with lackluster shooting and a series of horrid defensive performances, most notably a five-minute matador impersonation in the Indiana game two weeks ago.
But since then, rookie Jerryd Bayless has done little to claim the spot handed to him. Bayless played double-figure minutes for four straight games this past week, but by the end, all he had to show for it was four points, two assists … and six turnovers.
With neither player making much of an impression, coach Nate McMillan used both last night and again got little from either, leaving open the question of who will be the backup point guard once the playoffs start.
However, my money is on none of the above. In the postseason I'm thinking that Brandon Roy will be the point guard whenever Steve Blake checks out, that Rodriguez won't play at all, and that Bayless will be used only in end-of-quarter defensive situations.
All of which is fine as long as Blake is healthy and doesn't pick up fouls. And if he does? It's an area where Portland suddenly looks very vulnerable, despite having two promising young players at the position."

It's insider access only
The entire portion addressing the Blazers is above. The rest of the article is about other issues.
Q: Is Greg favoring his knee?
Frye: He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors.

On the money
I like both with a preference for Bayless, but that could be exactly how it will turn out in the playoffs if neither steps up in the last few games.

Plenty of games left...
hopefully one or both will step up but I am getting the feeling that the role will be very limited and specific with little margin of error unless one of the starting guards gets injured or is rested.

I think its a stretch to say
Sergio did nothing last night. 2 asts 2 rebs and 2 points with 0 TOs in 4 mins ain’t shabby.
However, I have to agree with his overall conclusion, neither are playing consistently enough to warrant getting all the time. I bet we continue to see a few minutes from each with B-Roy stepping in with more time running it, and more Blake time too.

Crazy
I said that a week ago in a comment and Hollinger obviously stole that from me.

I bet next week he starts calling for the league to eliminate the Minnesota and Memphis franchises
based on the fact that their team blogs suck.
You’ve got that much juice.
That was hilarious that you were quoted on the T-wolves blog by the way.

if only we had Hinrich
The Pacer’s play-by-play has nicknamed Jarrett “the rollercoaster”
So it’s not just “us” Blazer fans who’ve been frustrated with Jack’s production swings
Besides, JJ was never going to be happy playing spot minutes behind Blake, etc

i agree
with playing neither…5 minute spurts isnt doing both of them any favors. i thought sergio did an ok job in his 5 minute stint the other night, but in the end both of them have disappointed since blake returned.

i think nate will substitute situationally
using either sergio or jerryd in shotr spurts hoping to exploit their strengths. bayless saying that he now is a “defensive specialist” indicates he accepts this role.

well i think the blazers will shorten their rotation
for the playoffs, probably to 8 or 9……….
so u got blake, broy + batum, LMA + pryz for the starters
then theres rudy, travis and greg off the bench.
so yea hollinger is possibly right in saying sergio, jerryd and channing wont see much playing time in the postseason
