Oden is showing signs that he may someday be impossible to defend one-on-one on the low blocks.

* If you watched the game on TNT, you probably noticed how Oden and LeBron James became a little testy with one another, things even getting physical (but within the rules) on a couple of occasions.

What's the point?

he ran into Lebron on the way back to the other side of the court, Lebron..

gave him a little “wtf?” look and pushed him back….nothing more, but u could see the fire in Oden’s eyes. He started clapping more, taqlking on defense, calling out spots for ppl to be out. Then he had a hard foul wit hthe elbow to the face on Lebron, which made the cavs bench get up and Lebron have another look.

it was great to see Oden get Fired up….

Im referencing

his 4th foul, where lebron drove, and pump faked, got Oden in the air, Oden came down and accidently caught the elbow.

I just watched it on DVR, Lebron did the face like “wtf” and the cleveland bench stood up…it wasnt a huge deal , and it was def a foul….but there was the quote by announcers that said

“They said hard fouls tonight, and Oden is definitely getting his money’s worth on Lebron”

Oden was running up court, with Lebron standing in front of him

Lebron didn’t move out of the way, and Oden gave him a “love tap” with his shoulder. And that’s one strong shoulder.

Lebron’s reaction was priceless.

Yes, I LOVED that!!

LeBron was standing near his basket, blocking GO’s path back upcourt. So GO ran right through LeBron—instead of slowing and running around His Royal Highness. What affrontry! LeBron is so used to guys deferring to him out of respect for his ability and physical strength, he absolutely didn’t know what to make of being treated like any other NBA player. Then a few plays later, GO got his money’s worth after being pump-faked, and again LeBron gave GO the stink-eye. The nerve of this commoner! Doesn’t he know he’s a rookie and I’m the Lord of the NBA?

As in the first instance, GO completely ignored LeBron’s outrage. He didn’t even bother to stare back. Why should he, he seemed to say? He might as well have yawned and said, “I could whip you and read a book at the same time.”

Ladies and Gentlemen, if GO’s unceremonious dumping of Ray Allen during the Celtics game didn’t announce it, that sequence last night did: the Portland Trailblazers are no longer intimidated by or in awe of anyone. That’s huge.

Lebron's sceeerred

Lebrons just a little scared now that the man child is back. Oden is the only guy in the league that is 3 inches taller than him while maintaning the same athleticism.

by RipCityRevival52 on Mar 20, 2009 1:05 PM PDT up reply actions

Er, I loved that sequence as much as anyone

And LeBron indeed seemed disturbed and outraged to discover that this rookie has absolutely no fear of him. But GO doesn’t have “the same athleticism” as LeBron James. If he did, they’d have to outlaw him; it just wouldn’t be fair.

I’ve got to agree. However, if Oden can get back what he had before the knee issues… look out. You WILL be outlawing him and i’m sure the rules of the NBA will change as a result.

Illgauskas early injury-riddled career is an unusual but interesting comparison

Ilgauskas was also a first round pick by the Cavs in 1996. Due to a broken bone in his right foot then missed the entire 1996-97 NBA season. Sounds familiar? Then however he played all 82 games, including good ones against guys like Hakeem (aging a bit), with 13.9 points, 8.8 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game (arguably still among his best seasons). in 1998-99 due to the lockout and and a left foot injury (first in a whole series) he played only 5 games. In 1999-2000 he again didn’t play at all! And in 2000-2001 only the first 24 games. The next season he played 62, mainly as the backup to Chris Mihm! Since then he went 81, 81, 78, 78, 78, 73 in the regular seasons and this one around has missed December.

I suppose if blogs had been more popular early in his career, people would have called him a complete bust already. Now in retrospect he is considered one of the guys with the longest time with one team (albeit long injured), and while not a dominant star still a very solid center who could help his team win a championship.

Not unfathomable that Greg would miss far less games and be more dominant, right?

by Norsktroll on Mar 20, 2009 3:56 AM PDT reply actions

The biggest difference is style of play

Ilgauskas is so skilled and Oden so physical. That makes it harder for Oden to be effective if he has an injury.

Oden has had one serious injury (microfracture), and it seems he’s doing pretty well recovering from it. His two injuries this season aren’t big deal injuries. Sure he missed some time but they weren’t things that should jepordize his career or even an entire season. I guess the wrist in college could have affected his career but then again Shaq has had a hall of fame career with a bum wrist.

I think another player that can be looked at in comparison with GO is Wade. Sure GO hasn’t won an NBA title and they play different positions. But the similarities are they both have a very physical style of play and have both gone through stretches of injuries and flirted with the injury prone label. Wade has shruged that off this year to become a serious MVP candidate.

I just hope people stop freaking out everytime the guy gets dinged up and misses some games.

Everyone gets injured

They all get hurt at one time or another. I bet there are a few times out there who would absolutely love to have Ilgauskas. Can you imagine how many more would love to have Oden. They know you can’t call a guy a bust until he’s actually a bust!

I love this plainspoken hyperbole-free article.

PS – Don’t forget microfracture is a healing technique, not an actual injury.

expectations

Given his size, style of play, and the pounding he’s going to take night in and night out, I think it’s unrealistic to ever expect Oden to regularly play 75+ games in a season. That’s not a knock on him, that’s just reality for those circumstances for big power centers. Figure 1-2 minor injuries per year.

Personally, I’d expect him to play around 70 games per season, and I’d be perfectly ok with that, so long as he’s healthy and ready to go at playoff time every year. I think anyone whos’ going to be bagging on him for missing 10 games per year just isn’t being realistic

moses malone was a blazer ..

at least for a short while in 1976 until they traded him. I remember wondering why Glickman traded Malone when the Blazers had the two best big men in the league. I always assumed the Blazers’ front office thought that Malone was too much as a backup center when we already had Walton.

Can you imagine having Malone backing up Bill Walton? I’d argue that’s probably the best tandem at the five that the Blazers ever had .. better five than even Oden/Prizybilla.

Good point!

I guess I’m just trying to take into account that Joel and Greg might have a longer run of good Blazer years than Walton/Malone.

Malone was traded and never played a season here. Malone’s greatness happened after he left. Walton had roughly two great years here .. but of course Bill’s good years here were really good ones.

Hopefully Joel and Greg will have longer as Blazers. Of course we can’t know for sure until it happens.

So...

he’s not a complete idiot. Cool.

People who think odens a bust are people who look at his total stats instead of per minute.
People who think Oden is a bust are people who saw him at the beginning of the season and haven’t seen how he has CONSTANTLY improved from game to game.
People who think Oden is a bust are people who can only see the moment and can’t look beyond into the future and assume what is must always be.
People who think Oden is a bust are people that just don’t pay attention to the blazers.
People who think Oden is a bust, are people who can’t see how he alters plays just by being on the floor even when he does suck.
People who think Oden is a bust, fail to see the rookie calls and non-calls he gets because he hasn’t earned (and a lot of the times rightfully so) the benefit of the doubt yet on the fouls.

So this guy saw one game. One game is never everything, but he saw what the blazer fans have been seeing all year, and he saw it in it’s rough raw, not in game shape again form. Glad someone else finally notices.

Greg a bust? not even freaking close. Only to Knee jerk reactionists who can’t see beyond the now. The only way he’s a bust is if he’s injured for life, and of his three injuries, two could happen to anyone (unfortunately). It’s a VERY physical game and people rough it up alot more than what comes across on TV. Why do you think you always see players on ice?

The goal is not to be better, the goal is to be the best.

by ratbastird on Mar 20, 2009 7:56 AM PDT reply actions

Nice..

Good summary. There are far more people who think Oden just needs time than there are that think he’s a bust. I just think those who call him a bust have a microphone and/or a pen and are uninformed idiots who are talking louder than his supporters. Anyone who passes judgement on a guy’s career after 48 games is not qualified to give an educated opinion. When G.O. plays at home for the first time since his injury, my point will be proved. The Rose Garden will erupt with a HUGE ovation when Greg checks in for the first time.

Love for Oden, can't complain.

I thought it was a good read that gave perspective to the kind of things Oden can do in such a short period of time. Its not only his rebounding but the way in which he clogs the middle on defense. Opposing teams have to change their game plan when Oden comes in because he draws so much more of their attention.

That's where Aldridge comes in

and Rudy hitting shots. Oden is also not 100% and won’t be this year. Next year, look out.

So, it’s not even close. I take the amazing defense and the easy post offense that will get him 15 plus a game without even trying. I take aldridge pulling the PF post player to the outside and taking it inside when greg is pulled out. I take webster back ringing up the three’s and keeping the defense honest on the outside.

Durant? no, no freaking way. The ONLY way I’d think about durant is that I knew Oden would never play another game. Durant doesn’t fit. Even if Oden won’t be amazing (he will and already is if you’re really watching him), Durant just doesn’t fit the team.

You did not see a fully functional Blazer team last night. Roy was off because his normal partners weren’t there. It’s tough to get used to new people. He looks MUCH BETTER with Aldridge, Webster, and – Outlaw.

Uh

Durant isn’t an efficient offensive player yet. OKC actually played better WITHOUT him this year. Some offensive players can shoot a decent percentage and score a bunch of points but do not make their team appreciably better. Everyone else doesn’t get involved. Anyone remember Zack Randolph?
Not saying Durant won’t be better at involving his teammates at a later date but… ITs a lot easier to averabe 25 pts a game on a 18 win team than a 50 win team.

Can you imagine how bad our defense would be if we started Durant instead of Batum? It wouldn’t matter if we scored on 90% of our first quarter possessions because the bad guys would score on 99% of them.

by Zaig on Mar 20, 2009 9:17 AM PDT up reply actions

without oden

our 2nd unit would be horrendous on defense, Przy would start, and Frye would back up. Throw that in with a Back-up unit of : Outlaw (No defense) , Sergio (ole), and Rudy (hes ok at defense), im not sure we would be where we are today. Having the option to have both Przy and Oden anchor the middle on both rotations is an extreme luxury (did you see Przy last night??)

saying that, Even with Durant, im not sure durant would get CLOSE to 20 shots a game, he’d be at 10-12 (much like outlaw)….Roy is the #1 option, and with Durant, that wouldnt change.

We'd be unbeatable if we had Chris Paul instead of Martell

I regret the Martell pick but Oden/Durant? Come on, when are people going to give Oden a chance to recover? The guy is recovering from the most serious basketball surgery there is and adjusting to the NBA at the same time and he has a PER of 17.7! A lot of people thought Horford had a better rookie season than Durant and Oden’s numbers this year are just below Horford’s.

Martell

Ya its kind of annoying how Oden got so much crap for being out a whole year while Martell hasn’t gotten any heat what so ever. Forget Oden/Durant. I’d rather have Oden any day. Martell on the other hand. We could have had Chris Paul. I saw Martell on the half time show a little bit ago and he is all smiles and joking around. C’mon man you have been out all year, wipe that smile off your face and get back on the court. And you better pan out. I’ve seen one glimpse of of him being good when he put up 24 in the 3rd quarter 2 decembers ago. Other than that. Your a bum and shouldn’t be all smiles and giddy. I know your getting paid millions to chill courtside at every game but c’mon, Greg last year atleased had some remorse.

It's an open question how much a one dimensional big scorer helps your team.

The NBA is full of guys that can score. Would you rather have 3 guys each taking 10 shots shooting 45% and playing good D or one guy shooting 30 shots at 42% playing very little D?

It seems like a no brainer to me.

by raoulduke on Mar 20, 2009 1:13 PM PDT up reply actions

eh, lets give credit where credit is due, now.

KD is shooting 45+. And he will become a better scorer than BRoy, simply because of his size. KD is only a 2nd year player himself. In reality, it would make more sense to compare him to BRoy because of their similar skill set.

by premthegrem on Mar 20, 2009 3:20 PM PDT up reply actions

Wasn't really focused on KD. It was a general comment.

I think the league is full of guys who can put points on the board. It is less full of guys who can stop points from being put on the board. And I think shooting percentage is important. I’m not putting KD down as a player, I’m just not convinced that getting a high scorer is a no-brainer net plus for every team.

Very fair assessment.

It’s a relief to read something evenhanded like this. I feel there’s a lot of people who have falsely propped Oden up, proclaiming that he’s a sure thing and WILL be the next great big man and others who just like to tear the guy up. This guy seems to see the potential behind the unfortunate injuries and I appreciate that.

People calling Oden the next Walton or Wilt are a little high. People calling Oden the next Bowie, however, are even higher.

oh, i thought he was the next shaq or dwight howard

When he starts passing like crazy and running the break, i’ll consider him a walton.

Stop Fouling!

From what I see, if Oden can be a good little kid and keep his hands to himself, he has the ability to put up monster stats. He is a rebounding machine and he is not even in shape. If he can get some springs back watch out.

I thought Sam was a little friendly with his foul problems. These arent just ticky tack fouls that could go “either way”. Oden really is fouling people too much, and often times for no reason. He needs to learn how to alter and block shots without mangling people. Two times, Varejao went to the rim on Oden and Oden fouled both times. There is no reason he should have to foul somebody with as little finishing skills as Varejao. Those should have been blocked or altered shots.

But I still think Oden will turn into a very solid player.

Loved that he acknowledged

the BS-ness of the “rookie fouls” oden gets called on him. It is immensely frustrating to watch him play solid, passionate (if at times ill positioned) defense and see him pick up fouls. It slows down his development (and the development of all rookies who deal with it) and makes him constrain his game. Just keep truckin’ big man.

Anyone notice how Oden

Has picked up his recognition on defense? You can see he can’t elevate yet but alot of the stuff that was clicking before kneecap gate has stuck. Our impact in the playoffs this year could be greater than expected. Remember we were only SUPPOSED to win 42-46 games this year, but here we are shooting for 51-52. In the west. Look around, this team is good people. No excuses for age, injuries, or weak pt guard/ small forward play needed.

Hollinger has argued...

… that the above-expectations play of Brandon, Joel and Steve have created the increased number of wins this year. I think he’s underestimated Oden’s effect when he’s played. Oden completely changes every team’s offensive plans.

Not that the other guys haven’t had an effect too. Just saying. :)

It's not just Oden

OF course there has been improvement by alot of people. Oden just makes it easier for the likes of Roy and Aldridge to do what they are best at and to NOT have to try and do too much.

Plus

Hollinger’s metrics do not allow for improvement in young players very well. Everything is based on previous play. All we have is young improving players. He will probably predict we will only win 50 next year …..we if EVERYTHING goes wrong maybe we only win 50 next year

I think the improvement has to do with coaching

Nice piece

It’s interesting that an outsider who’s only seen a pair of GO’s crummier performances is able to see what so many Blazer fans and local media can’t. I was particularly impressed that Amico picked up on what a good rebounder GO is. If you pay attention, GO not only effectively anticipates where the rebound is going to come off the rim, he ALWAYS finds and completely boxes out the biggest guy on the other team. So when GO doesn’t get the board, he makes it far easier for a teammate to get it. This degree of rebounding skill is unusual nowadays, and shows that while GO is still raw in some areas, he’s very accomplished in others.

I think it’s fair to say that if Amico had witnessed a few of GO’s performances leading up to the injury, his assessment would be even more upbeat. Namely, he’d realize that there’s nothing wrong with GO’s hands or touch. It was mainly rust and overeagerness that caused GO to look so clumsy with the ball last night.

I don't consider myself a oden hater...

more of a skeptical grump who would have went a diffrent way…

I’m pleased that he’s doing as well as he is, I had hoped for more, but I don’t have many doubts I’ll get my “more” soon.

I don’t like the tick tack baggin of durant that seems to happen quite often the second anyone starts nit pickin their gripps with oden…..but…hey…

"...and being the one in motion."

That’s something I’ve thought about, but hadn’t seen discussed at this site (although I mighta missed it). Someone more versed in such things might have a technical explanation. But I’m reminded of how karate guys can break bricks with their hands. It isn’t that the hand is sturdier than the brick; it has something to do with accelleration—and being the hitter rather than the hit-ee. Another example would be head-butts. Again, I don’t know anything about martial arts, but I’ve always been curious why the guy who initiates the skull collision generally seems to get the best of the exchange. (Although he’s probably picking a more vulnerable spot on the opponent’s head than he’s offering up.)

In the case of GO and Maggette, Greg’s knee was stationary and passive, whereas Maggette’s knee was dishing out the hit. So maybe that’s at least part of why Greg’s knee got the worst of it. Either that, or it was the plain old “luck of the draw.” In any case, the idea that Greg got injured because he’s frail or injury-prone always struck me as silly.

Oden

looks happier coming off the bench, Portland fans have complained he did not earn the starting spot and that the Blazers just gave it to him because of who he was/is. I think Maybe Greg was thinking he needed to earn the spot also, the kid does not act like he should be handed anything. I bet the rest of the western conferance playoff contenders were hoping Oden was out for the rest of the season or at least till the playoffs. Greg should be back to playing 20+ minutes a game come playoff time. I also like the attitude he has gotten since coming back.

I try to help with everything," Fernandez said. "If the coach says go rebound, I go rebound. I work for the team.

""If I'm playing this game to get media and attention, I shouldn't be here," Aldridge said. "I'm here to play basketball, and do what I can do to help this team win."
