Greg gives James the cold shoulder...
--The bench rotation consisted of basically two people tonight and of the two Greg Oden was unquestionably the star. He collected 5 fouls in 12 minutes but part of that was the Blazers' attempt to make Creamed LeBron every time he penetrated. You don't want to be fouled by Oden much. Here's the deal, though. In those 12 minutes Greg got 9 rebounds plus a block and scored 7 points. He was 5-8 from the line which bolstered his scoring even though his low post moves took a step back from what we were seeing when he was in normal form before the knee thing. This game was a huge success for Greg, all things considered. He gave us just what we needed. - Dave
But that's not the whole story, or even the main story. For me, it was the statement Greg made when going back on defense, he basically ran right through Mr. Labron, like high school tuff guys in the hall, and 'Bron didn't fair well in that exchange. Greg also went hard for a block on a Labron drive where James got the better of him by out thinking Oden with the pump fake to draw the foul. Our boy looked like he was trying out there. The Mikes made mention of it.
Did any one else notice this?
What does it meen?
Is Greg getting ready to try and assert himself and wear the superstar mantle?

Unfortunately I missed Greg's second stint because I started work at 7
Dont feel bad for me I took a break just in time to see the end of regulation and OT.
So I didn’t see the GO versus LBJ exchanges, but as far as super star mantle is concernded get ready. I think GO’s going to be so underrated going into next season he will be able to really shock people. I’m glad to hear he didn’t back down from James

I think he's asserting himself.
He still needs to realize he’s really strong on offense. When he gets hand checked he oversells the foul but he could probably finish with the ball in the hoop 50% of the time. He’s definitely making a push forward in an area we’d all hope he’d make; Mentally.
I agreed with one of the TNT commentators about him rushing the ball on his shots. He needs to slow himself down and relax. His release is too quick.
And I know everyone wants him to tear the rim off on every dunk and call it a Roy influence but I’d prefer he save his energy on clear path dunks. Up to him but I think it’d be smarter for him and us.

Offense...
Remember in the J-Quick articles how GO said he was mad at himself for not scoring more, he felt he was too passive. We were saying that as well before he got injured, a lot of people were complaining about the guards not getting him the ball more.
In the Sam Amico piece on the main page Greg seemed to say, yah I know I missed some shots but I have to take them, I have to stay aggressive. I have seen that kind of play from Greg the last two games, and it has been nice to see. I hope Greg takes it upon himself to be the lead scorer in the second unit for the rest of the season.

I liked that too
Time to start chipping away from the image as a frail rookie who can do no harm. Refs and opposing players need to respect that huge guy moving around the paint and changing shots like he did in college.
On the other hand, James didn’t seem afraid of Greg in that game either, while he altered a ton of decisions. Especially in the first half our guards didn’t dare to shoot or drive when he was anywhere near them.
by Norsktroll on Mar 20, 2009 4:21 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Like the technical he got against Boston
It shows he’s not going to back down to star power, it is the best way for Greg to earn respect.

Allow me to introduce myself
Hi! I’m CatMan2. I don’t think we’ve spoken before. If you don’t mind, I’d just like to point out a couple of things here that your comment brings to mind.
- What’s wrong with being an Oden fan (and a boy)? Oden is a Trail Blazer. We’re Trail Blazer fans. Or some of us may be, anyway.
- I agree that all of us who are Oden fans will be a lot happier when he can actually play a whole game. I’m pretty confident that this will happen, maybe by the end of the season.
- How does a real center play? Does a real center grab a lot of rebounds, block a few shots, change a number of other shots, make a decent percentage of his fouls shots, and make the backboard shake when he dunks?
- Do you really believe that people all over the country — and I assume this includes sports writers and commentators — pay careful attention to what might be described as the harmless hyperbole of Portland homers, all in order to form their own negative opinions (if, in fact they actually do have such negative opinions) of Greg Oden?
- Lebron James is a great player. But he certainly knows it and lets everybody else know it. He is a prima donna, and I very much liked the fact that Greg was not inclined to bow down to him.
Well, that’s about all I wanted to say. Have a nice day, and “Go Blazers!”

I’m with you 100% .
I means something when you run into the “king” of basketball and brush him away with out looking back.

They know, he knows, it’s only a matter of time.
by BatumRaider on Mar 20, 2009 9:06 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I also was reminded of the Ray Allen incident
GO has shown a shocking—SHOCKING—lack of respect for perennial NBA all-stars. Who does this rookie think he is? Where’s the deference, the awe? Doesn’t Oden realize these players are royalty and he’s a mere commoner? Worse yet, when the veteran stars express their outrage, this kid doesn’t even seem to NOTICE!
David Stern needs to act. Maybe he can create a new rule or something. Before long, the Portland Trailblazers will start thinking they can win championships, and the NBA and its advertisers can’t have THAT!

blah blah blah
Oden dominated while he was in there. He will be in there more often. Even LBJ looked scared. Why should people have to “handle” that LeBron is the NBA posterboy? At some point, the NBA is going to start treating Oden the same way, much to the distress of opposing teams. His personality is just too engaging.
Also, how many dunks did LeBron get last night? Maybe a little afraid of Pryz and GO? I think so

An NBA game only has 48 minutes. How can Oden stand up straight for 1 hr?
I also wouldn’t mind the Blazers having fun during pre-game introductions like the Cavs with their photo routine or the Pistons dancing, but that’s not a requirement to be a strong team. The Spurs and Lakers don’t do much during intros, the Celtics a little bit.
As for being an enforcing presence on the floor, Oden can be a player like that and is showing sings to assert himself which was the point of this fanpost (Bowen is not an aggressive type off the court either). Bayless is another character who doesn’t back down when encountering resistance, and Roy is increasingly so – see the Ariza scrum where he was the first to get in his face and everybody stood up for Rudy. Getting another scorer and and a PF rucker of course wouldn’t hurt to become a more dynamic team, I don’t think many people doubt that.

Odin is a god of war and death, but also the god of poetry and wisdom. He hung for nine days, pierced by his own spear, on the world tree. Here he learned nine powerful songs, and eighteen runes. Odin can make the dead speak to question the wisest amongst them.

GREG LAUGHED ON COURT
Multiple times. Most notably so after a foul while going to the line. After a great pass from Rudy resulted in a foul and one point. He started cracing up at Rudy.
Seems to me he’s starting to let a little steam out and just trying to play loose for once. Either way. He can do absolutely nothing on the offensive end and I’ll be happy. that 2nd unit needs a defensive identity. Ask Lebron. Greg is showing what it will be.

Yeah, we’re all fans but that doesn’t mean we want to get all smootchie smootchie with every player on the team. I personally think Travis Outlaw is a selfish player who needs to look for the open man before trying to create a shot. This doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate what he brings to the team, I just think a 6th year player should be a little more careful.
I like GO, though. I’ve come to terms with the fact that he may not be the 15/10/5 guy we all wanted him to be when he was drafted. But, he’s still a sick defender and a nasty presence in the middle. Just having him in the game forced Cleveland and Indiana to low percentage outside shots on this road trip. However, I do think the dude needs to drink his milk for strong bones, and chewing down a few cans of spinich probably wouldn’t hurt either.

“I personally think Travis Outlaw is a selfish player who needs to look for the open man before trying to create a shot.”
I think he has grown away from that significantly and it’s lame not to recognize that.

Hmmm. Your avatar looks more like George Dubya with a beard.
"Aneurysm".
When Outlaw wins a game on a last-second shot, it’s called an "annthefaneurysm". QualityPie

I liked the bump.
While I don’t think Oden intentionally did it, he certainly didn’t look regretful… and James looked quite surprised.
Then there was a less than soft foul delivered by Oden on James. I thought there might be words at that point.
I loved that chippiness. Obviously it didn’t derail James, but I wonder how it would’ve played out if Oden wasn’t in foul trouble.

I think it actually got LBJ going
TNT mentioned that multiple times. But he definitely started to take the game over at that point. Similar to a guy we know named Roy.
It was Lebron time after that.

Does it really take a bump to get Lebron up for a home game against a WC contender? It shouldn't
Mostly I think TNT likes to have their noses inside Lebron’s jock.

no.
He’s one of the 3 top 4th quarter scorers in the league.
Him “turning it on” last night had little to do with Oden bumping him and way more to do with the King doing what the King does.
I hate that stupid fake photo session he and his teammates do before tipoff. Cut it out, King.

I really think we should stop calling him the King
This is America, we don’t have royalty here. Even in basketball. For now on, I am only calling him Lebron.

How about "Ramona"?
His middle name is “Raymone”.

The Cavs are more concerned with the pregame routine at this point than the actual game
They had MUCH more energy for that photo shoot than they did for the first half. I’m not even kidding.
They aren’t respecting how badly they need homecourt to beat LA. They’re too focused on the Eastern Conference race.
Q: Is Greg favoring his knee?
Frye: He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors.

They won that race
They aren’t losing enough for Boston or Orlando to catch them. Schedule wise they should crush the Lakers too, they have like 1 hard game left.

I hope the 8th seed beats them in the 1st round
and then the celtics lose to Atlanta or Philly

Protecting the Paint
Oden will own the paint from about the middle of next year until he retires.
I’m reminded of Stephen in Braveheart – ’It’s my island" the look in his eye and sneaking in a dagger and protecting B-Roy.
No one will want to come inside when G.O. regains some conditioning and quickness, and he’ll get the calls.

I'm still waiting for the day that Oden blocks the ball so hard that I catch it in the stands.

Greg shoving Ray Allen into the stands, shouldering Lebron. He's sending the message that
you’re going to get hit hard if you get in his way or come into the paint. It’s called intimidation. Think Jordan rules.

I think he should take 3 good hard fouls a game
pick a time and just clobber the ball and anything else you get with it
