Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

I had to get something off my chest...

I don't post often, but I felt there were a few things that had to be said. Everything is great in Blazerland right now, except for one place, the flashship station of the Portland Trail Blazers, 95.5 The Game. At least in the morning that is the case. Gavin and Chad might be the worlds biggest haters! Since the first game of the season, they pretty much start every show with some kind of Greg Oden sucks rant. Its getting rather repetitive, and kind of annoying. The fact of the matter, is they are a couple of nerds, who think its cool to go off on someone, and hang up on people who don't share their opinion, probably because they got picked on when they were kids. But hey, I am no psycologist, although half of Portland thinks they are right now in regards to Gregs mental makeup. I can envision every show starting something like this...

Pre-Show

Gavin: "Well Chad, we can start the show with one of two topics... How much Greg Oden sucks, or we can make up more nicknames for ourselves"

Chad: "Come on Champ! You know I like to be called "The Body" or "C.I.P"

Intro music ends

Gavin: " Welcome to the MSP. Greg Oden is the worst basketball player on Earth"

Chad: "Haha good one champ! You are hilarious! I am Chad "I would love nothing more than to cuddle all night with Jim Rome but Gavin is a decent substitute in Portland"

Gavin: Well then C.I.W.L.N.M.T.T.C.A.N.W.J.R.B.G.I.A.D.S.I.P, today should be a good show. I bleed red and black baby. Greg Oden Sucks."

Chad: "Yah, Champ you are so awesome!"

End Scene

I know this has been harped on in the past, but seriously, the Blazers come off two STELLAR victories over the weekend, and all these guys want to talk about is Gregs injury. When Steve injured himself, they werent talking about him being soft, but when he reinjured himself, people flipped! Same with Martell. Now that Greg isn't healing as fast as people hoped, they question his character. Its getting to the point that I would almost rather talk to a Laker fan about the Blazers than most Blazers fans. Its a sad thing to say, but its true. I hope all this venom doesnt come back to bite us later. If he is as sensitive Blazers fan think he is, I could see him leaving because of people like the MSP guys, and killing us in the future, in another jersey.

Then again, maybe I'm wrong. Maybe its too much to ask to look for some positivity on the drive to work after a big win.

I'm not local and have never heard Gavin's morning show.

I like him on the Courtside show with Dave and Casey. He does well enough when he is setting them up with good questions. Maybe on the morning show he is striking sparks on a hot topic in hopes of generating more heat, which translates into better ratings. Rather than get hot under the collar about it, maybe you should suggest better topics for him to discuss.

Why not file complaints through the right channels?

I am all for complaining, and bitching, but in reality, if you want something done BE Forums arent the right place. I am not in PDX (unfortunately) so i dont even listen to these clowns, but judging by the past like 1+ yrs on BE forums, you DEFINITELY are in the majority.

Try to organize these BEdgers and make a petition?

I usually give them about five minutes just to hear last night’s scores or whatever but when they start giving their opinions I’m gone. That’s my form of protest. That and complaining here. I bet one or both of those dorks actually check here now and then to look for their names. I know it’s not much but it’s what I got.

i feel ya

i mean believe me, i come on and rant and bitch too…but it seems like in a place like portland, there is no room for someone as critical as these guys as the “main” radio (i really have never heard there show, it seems like they are pretty bad though from the bulk of comments).

I too am lazy, so i do not fault u good sir. but my point was more of an encouraging, empower yourself type post, not a snide remark (sorry if it came off that way).

I do feel like with the base of people here, i mean look at the amount of Hits here, a petition via the forums could easily get this problem looked at.

Besides isnt Gavin lurking on these sites, at least someone with the handle gavin.dawson@955thegame.com is posting.

Gavin is/was pretty good without Chad. but as soon as you throw Chad in with him, he’s an entirely different personality on-air. It’s like he’s trying so hard to compete with Chad to see who can be the most hip or bold or whatever.

i really enjoyed his show before Chad joined him, and even now I enjoy him when hes’ on the podcast and other times, but the two of them together are becoming unlistenable.

A related thought...

I DID just make the error of reading John Canzano’s slimy attack on Greg Oden’s desire to play. That launched me into a fantasy in which Greg, upon being asked by this creepy little yip dog whether he wanted to play, hauled off and punched him in the face.

Sure, I know: Canzano would cry to the police, GO would be arrested for assault and suspended for a month, and we’d endure the “Jailblazers” talk all over again. But hey: GO will likely be out for that long anyway with the knee injury. (You know: the one he supposedly should be playing through.) And it’d be SO satisfying to see the photos of Canzano’s busted up face. It’d be like years ago, when Geraldo got his nose broken by a chair.

Right now I would have to agree with you, it is very, very sad but also very very true. I personally keep my circle of Blazer friends to a select few who actually speak rationally. Thankfully, no L@ker fans in this group, just longtime hardcore Blazer fans.

Its getting to the point that I would almost rather talk to a Laker fan about the Blazers than most Blazers fans. Its a sad thing to say, but its true

I almost hate the Portland sports talk airwaves. Like the Oregonian, I have been abused so many times by the local hacks and their wimpy/weak agenda that I will never read or listen again without taking them with a big grain of salt.

Canzano is the worst!! He thinks he is really clever and famous. He is actually just a jerk and a loudmouth. I was excited when 95.5 became a sports station this year but I can’t listen to anyone but Rome and Wheels. am i missing something here?

it’s radio. you don’t have to listen. I am not sure how complaining about it here is worthwhile. But if it helped you to get it off your chest that’s cool I guess. Although cracking on the MSP on a forum is pretty similar to hating on Greg Oden on a radio show.

Me, I listen a bit in the mornings and take it for what it’s worth. They make me laugh sometimes and I hear the latest news and Oden injuries.

Don’t worry, soon there will be the perfect trifecta, something for everyone:

1. Morning Sports Page – ridiculous and controversial, but sometimes funny and entertaining

2. Wheels at work – Blazer homer party, but sometimes informative

3. Bald Face Truth – hypocritical and fake, but sometimes interesting

whatever.... the radio is a paid business and we are the consumers they should cater too.

It is nowhere near the same that bloggers crack on MSP as it is that Radio Hosts overhype and over-dig one story for SHOCK JOCK purposes.

Me turning off my radio, like I have done, is something that as a consumer I can do to CHOOSE. But the problem is that Big Suke already pollutes the other station, and CIP pollutes the morning sports show on 95.5. All my buddies HATE to listen to these sports radio shows too, so why do producers and the station cheese put these idiots on the air. Consumers need a forum to vent on, and hopefully radio producers listen to this type of stuff.

As consumers it would be nice to be able to support what we want to support, and we WANT to support local sports talk radio because we love sports. The whole premise of starting a new radio FM station seemed to be giving the Portland sports fan market what they were missing, which is a series of radio show that talks sports rather than who is the greatest 80’s hair bands or why we hate should hate on fat people. Sports is what we care about, and there is plenty to talk about in sports and not have to focus on Greg Oden’s injury or being Lakers honks on our airwaves… Do you think that would fly in New York if you were a Mariners fan? Or in LA if you were a Spurs homer? Or a Raiders fan on the airwaves in Denver? NO!

Portland is a community of open minded people who care about the well being of our local teams. We want to hear about the Blazers, and not just idiots ripping on our future hopes that ultimately can and might hurt his confidence. We want to hear about Portland Lumberjax and Portland Timbers, and Blazers and Ducks in good times and bad. Not jumping ship or why their players suck… It is a fine line and those in the media in Oregon should be more cautious of how they walk it.

Get rid of the idiots and put on people who are more like our fair city.

Yeah these guys suck, and come across as total amateurs

Obviously CIP is a huge L@#%?$ fan. He is absolutely brutal to listen to at any time, when he goes on a rant, he says the same thing over and over without even using different wording, he can’t get through a sports report without totally botching it, and expresses his masculinity with talk of man-crushes and dimes. Obviously these guys do not know how to do a compelling talk-show without resorting to Limbaughsian or Larsonian tactics that deflect anyones input towards humiliation, and confusion( They attack callers with name calling, and hang up on them before their arguments can be fully explained), and get all of their attention either from irate people or people that have bought into their schtick. Total negativity is not what I want to hear in regards to the Blazers right now. Greg Oden is hurt again. BFD! We just killed the spurs! We are right in the middle of the playoff race. The more compelling story is how BRoy is stepping up as a leader for this team, not just by example but by sticking his neck out and saying he’s tired of this team struggling, and putting the rest of the team on notice. The msp can say whatever they want, I listen to music in the morning now anyways, and while they’re busy tearing down GO, the Blazers are going to continue winning and improving and when the end of the regular season comes these jobbers are going to have to play catch-up so that their true ineptitude doesn’t come crashing down all around them.

An admission: After the OKC game, I said some things. Stupid things. Things about Nate not knowing how to coach GO. It was only then I realized that I was in danger of becoming that which I most loathe - an uninformed, knee jerk fan who reacts to wins with wild delusions of championships and losses with trade and firing fodder. I will not be that fan. From this point on I will support the Blazers, the coaches and front office wholeheartedly, offering praise and criticism appropriate to the matter at hand. I don't mind hating

but when it is as uneducated as these two, it kills me.

Back up what you are saying with hard facts, statistics, or interesting analyses and I will listen to your #&$% radio show. Until then BE is just fine for me.

Even on the podcast, Gavin comes across as less than informed...

Basically, Gavin is a typical sports radio guy – good radio voice, good instinct for sensationalism, completely lacking in any real insight, intelligence, or perspective. Take him for what he is.

Q: Is Greg favoring his knee?
Frye: He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors.

They just want to get syndicated

So they pander to the only nationally recognized story line of the Blazers season: Greg Oden’s injuries.

Life is hilarious.

There's all of this ire for Quick and Bill Simmons

that should really be directed at Dawson and Canzano.

Every podcast Dawson (I’ve only listened to two because he’s so awful) starts spouting some idiocy about what he FEELS about this and what SEEMS to be the case with that. Then Dave or Casey is like “Hmm… interesting but here’s two reasons you’re wrong and I actually have more but don’t want to be the one who brought you to full consciousness and the realization that you’ve been embarrassing yourself for some time now.”

There’s a scene in the Brother’s K that I think of everytime I hear him speak. It involves former jock now high school coaches who have never left their hometown.

And Canzano…. anybody read his latest post about Greg? How he looked him in the eye (also presumably into his soul) and asked him if he wanted to play… I mean really? Every one of his stories reads like a high school sophomore’s journal entry. I loved Ben’s post about Storyteller and how he exposed Canzano for what he is – the slightly more vitriolic Gavin Dawson of print.

Any fallout from that post Ben?

Canzano

Have to admit, I like the guy. Sounds like I may be very much in the minority, but I do enjoy his radio show. Sometimes he’s a little full of himself, but him and Strong are entertaining, informative, and back up their statements with facts. I listen to be entertained (not dbagged by a couple of morning jobbers – gag, I said that).

Subtract Strong from the equation and I mostly agree.

Strong’s own show is boooooring. “OMG, I’m 23, I’m on the radio, I can’t believe it, can you believe it, it’s crazy, this is nuts, I’m 23, OMG, radio, me, on it, OMG, Canzano’s balls-sweat ’em, OMG…”

Why can’t Mike Barrett do double time and do a radio show as well? I’d listen to that.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
