The Wave: Get It Outta Here

I was at the game yesterday and had the distinct displeasure of sitting in section 330 where the wave started. Granted, the game was essentially over by halftime, if not earlier, so we apparently needed something to do, but shouldn't the wave be reserved for baseball stadiums in the 1980's? I have never seen this ridiculous phenomenon at an NBA game. The dude at the bottom of the section "conducting" the wave was so disgustingly pleased with himself. The only good part about it was it nearly lasted long enough to drown out the Chalupa celebration. I would enjoy some input on this. Am I hating unnecessarily? I'm anticipating that I probably am.

I usually hate the wave

but mid-wave last night i realized nothing put that win in the Spurs face like not even paying attention to the game with 5 minutes left, and i started participating.

New rule: Only do the Wave when up by 20 points against playoff teams with 5 minutes left in the game.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krazy_George_Henderson

His wiki page is funny.

In the summer of 2000, supporters of the University of Washington demanded that Krazy George’s website be taken down, as they claimed to have invented the wave at their homecoming game against Stanford University in 1981. However, as that game took place on October 31, more than two weeks after the nationally televised A’s/Yankees game, Krazy George has refused to remove his site, and continues to claim the invention of the wave.

I agree 100% with SergioFTW. Well, I said with 4 minutes or less, but close enough.

Up 20+
Against a real team.
Under 4 minutes.

The fans are there to have fun. And seriously, if you think that the players didn’t love the wave, you’re nuts. Roy is going to come out and beat the Lakers by 20 himself just to see another wave!

The crowd was into it for about 3 minutes despite the game being over. And quite frankly, its not the first time its happened this year, just the first time it has carried over to the lower bowl such that the entire stadium was involved. You are there to have fun. Just go with the flow.

probably, but

while the entire crowd may have only been into it for 3 min or so, the guy in 330 insisted on trying to get it going for every timeout, the entire second half, to no avail. not until the spotlight began traveling with the wave did it make it all the way around. the “woo” that went up every time was the most annoying part. hate hate hate hate hate. Yes to the Wave - NO!!! to the Chalupa Chant

I’m a season ticket holder, and I was at the game last night. I like the wave because it’s totally Oregon. We’re just dorky like that and we don’t even care. Afterall the Wave started in the Northwest. It only happens on rare occasions in the Rose Garden, which I think is appropriate. It’s the first time I’ve seen it this year. I saw it once, maybe twice last year. I like that the fact that it adds insult to injury to the hated Spurs as we blow them out.

As far as the Chalupa Chant. I tolerate it, sort of like I tolerate Blaze, which is just barely. The worst is when it’s a tight game hovering around 100 points, and the chant starts. That’s just embarrassing. I think the game should take precedence at that point.

On the subject of Blaze though, I caught a tee shirt at my upper level seat last night for the first time in like 10 years. Then when I opened it and looked at it, I saw that it wasn’t a Blazer shirt, but actually had a special Blaze the Trail Cat insignia. At first I was disgusted, but after a while I just thought it was funny. It’s kinda like the wave – You just gotta go with it.

The Chalupa chant is the worst

I agree that it’s embarrassing during a tight game, but the absolute worst is when it starts and the Blazers have no chance of reaching 100 on the possession. 96+2 does NOT = 100!!! If you insist on doing your stupid chant, wait for 98. Please. For the sake of The Juice, Section 312 Row F Seat 1, at the very least wait til 98. I’ll even settle for 97. I’m not a hard man to please.

Oh, and The Wave is stupid. The only thing stupider then having to sit through The Wave was having to sit through The Wave AND the Chalupa chant.

Except for the fact that it was their fault they were getting beat so bad

they basically benched their starters in the 2nd quarter. Just like they forfeited that Denver game, they essentially forfeited this game after we got up big on them.

And the Spurs players even looked like they found the Wave a bit humorous.

by prezofdeath on Mar 2, 2009 2:53 PM PST up reply actions

ok, bad comparison

they did come out to play in the first quarter, unlike the denver game where they didn’t try, period.

But what I’m saying is they didn’t make a real effort for a comeback. They put Timmy and Tony on the bench and let their subs play extended minutes, which I think is smart. Why not rest them for the playoffs? I think that’s Pop being smart.

but yeah, bad comparison. They DID try—they just gave up after they were down 20+ in the beginning of the 2nd quarter.

Things I prefer to The Wave at games in the Rose Garden

1) Chants of “Tippecanoe and Tyler, too!”

2) All those sitting in Section 302 do the Macarena for a chance to win a Tickle-Me-Elmo doll

3) All the Blazer fans at the game yell out “We’ve got spirit, yes we do! We’ve got spirit, how bout you?” and celebrate when Spurs fans do not respond loudly.

who hung out at the Memorial Coliseum, I thought it was FANTASTIC. It was fun. It was 20,000 (okay, maybe only 11,000 participated) people having fun as one in the spirit of the team. The only thing I didn’t like was that the wave was killed by Chalupa chants.

The wave is part of PTB history. Bring it on.

And yeah, the numerous attempts to actually get the wave going were pretty annoying, but once it did happen it was pretty sweet to be among the group that started it. I think starting the wave at a game when you are up by 20 is way cooler than bitching about the wave on a forum the day after said game.

I have a 1/4 season in that same section and have met the guy who started it. He is just a super excited fan who loves getting other people stoked about the blazers. If you have a problem about crazy fans at blazer games then don’t go simple as that. And why is doing the wave any different than painting your face or dancing like a freak on the camera? Let people have fun the way they want to have fun. Yeah waves are usually a baseball game thing, but this is part of what makes Portland fans and Blazer games unique. We are quirky and weird and it’s gonna happen whether you like it or not.

I will be at the L*ker game in said section and you better believe if we are up 20+ against them I will take a break from booing Kobe to get off my donkey and do the wave with a smile on my face. And I won’t judge you if you do or don’t cause you paid for the game too.

Being a season ticket holder....

I see several wave attempts each year. It usually takes four or five tries before the sections “down stream” start to catch on. Even then it rarely makes it around the RG once let alone five times! I think the wave is fun and it rarely happens so where’s the harm? I do think that guy trying to get it started a second time is a little over the BlazersEdge but to each his/her own.

Most importantly, the kids love it.

The “beef heart attack” chant is what gets me. In a blowout, fine. A close game, no way! And I also think the Blazers should have to win for the Chalupa to be handed out.

I don’t cash in the coupons anyway. I’m saving them all and will hopefully be able to purchase a Taco Bell store using coupons only….wish me luck!
