Popovich: Blazers importance to Portland, and they are "back"
For Portland’s sake, Popovich said he is happy the Trail Blazers have regained their status as one of the NBA’s top teams with a roster that represents the community in a first-class manner.
"It’s a heck of a team, and only getting better, week by week," he said. "It’s great for the city to have their team back, a team that not only wins, but does it with class. They’re as important here as we are in San Antonio.
"There’s not a whole lot of professional stuff going on, expect the Blazers and Spurs in their respective towns, so the people demand teams that compete hard and teams that operate with class, on and off the court. Now, Portland has that again, and I think it’s great for the town and great for the NBA.
"They’re going to be a tough matchup for every single team in the league every single night because of the coaching and because of the system. They’re good. They’re back."

Whata class statement....
Ok he’s graduated up my scale of annoying a few pegs….
Actually it’s a psychological ploy to weaken us mentally

Pop is awesome.
How could you not love that guy?

plus one
I swear I think he moonlights as a mafioso. The man has grown on me ever since he pulled his stunt at the beginning of the season with Shaq and did the 2 thumbs up cheesy grin

What a swell guy
Now I feel bad for ripping him in the post game thingy.
It rubs the lotion on its skin. It does this whenever it's told.
wow..
I don’t like pops….
but I respect him more for this. .
The Faith don't panic, the faith freaks out burns out farms and torchs small villages in the name of The Faith.
You gotta love Pops
He’s a great coach, and a nice guy (when not berating the officials). Anyone remember the intentional hack-a-shack joke he played 10 seconds into the first SAS vs PHX game this year? Comic gold!

Doesn't anyone read comments any more?

I love he because he DOES berate the officials.
Now that TO thing behind 25 was just funny. But, normally, I am yelling at the scream after those dang zebras!
STERN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Love Pops
I’ve had the pleasure of meeting him a couple of times and he is one of the most friendly, down-to-earth people I’ve ever met. I have nothing but good things to say about him.
I am with everyone else in this thread
I can now stop hating Pops and start respecting him. That was great of him to say, especially after just getting his but kicked by us.

On your marks, get set, ...
Nate hasn´t signed yet a new contract, has he?
Sergio + Rudy = 16
Sergio + Bayless = 16
Batum 8+8=16
Swap for Pop?
He can really coach a Frenchman, ya know ![]()

I mean Pop would like to move from SA to Portland in one year and a half. A window is closing, another window opens.
Sergio + Rudy = 16
Sergio + Bayless = 16
Batum 8+8=16
Probably. I don't think we can have both.

"...operate with class, on and off the court?"
Am I the only one that finds this statement a little ironic coming from him? Not to take anything away from him as a coach or the Spurs as a team, but when I watch the Spurs whine on every call, flop like epileptic fish out of water, and the incredibly inappropriate amount of ref-chastizing Pop is aloud to get away with, “class” isn’t the first word that springs to mind.
you are one to talk about class

what's not classy about that?
I’d like to see you pull off rainbow thunderbolt face paint with a maroon 70’s space mullet. Point is though, it’s great for him to say nice things in the paper, and there’s no denying his stature as one of the elite coach’s in the league, but I find his behavior during games tiresome. I’d love to see the ref’s go on a T rampage with him until he learns to pick his battle’s a little more selectively, as in not every single time the whistle is blown against his team. I’d love to see the NBA be about who is good at basketball instead of who is good at freaking out the officials.
Sometimes a team
needs their coach to show some fire, passion. bad call or not, sometimes the coach arguing with the refs and stepping onto the court to get a T is what the team needs to realize they should fire up. pops is great at knowing when to do that, or when its all in fun.
top to bottom, you can hate how they play the game all you want. he’s a great coach on a great team.
i personally like how they play, and complain about nocalls on stuff others think were good no calls. but thats because the league now its all about, drive as hard as you can, flail and hope for a foul call.
i mean, i like brandon, but i hate how he drives with the sole intent of going to the line most of the time.
i think he would be great if our team actually moved without the ball… an offball screen to set roy up with a quick jumper would be great. instead of roy holding the ball, and all 4 other people arcing out along the 3point line spotting up.
bah, sorry this post got wayyyyyyy to long.

whatever
so I don’t like an over-commercialized pop artist? not my thing..
I was on dead tour laughing at bowiehead
maybe it was stupid.. and I have respect for his success but I feel if the fake davidbowie can judge the class of Pops based on his biases I can judge the class of him for his handle.. whatever

Nah, I get you
I was kidding, completely.
My Screen name is a Bowie persona, so I have to defend the man.
I think DBowie was commenting on Pop’s behavior on the court, which is anything but classy really.
Bowie is actually a pretty classy guy and has been since he laid off the drugs in about ’79.
As for DeadHeads laughing at us Bowie-ites, I cannot think of a worse fate than having to follow the Dead on tour. Unless it’s having to follow Phish. My wife, a zealous Bowie fan who my screen name is chosen for actually is a huge Phish fan, and actually insisted on the Dead being played while she gave birth to my son a few weeks ago. I got it back to Seu Jorgia singing Bowie in Portugese (from Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou), before my son was permanently damaged. Close one, though. I’ll have to keep an eye on him.

heh.. that's funny
Yeah.. I would imagine that those who like the Dead (or, to a lesser degree, Phish) would usually be somewhat different than Bowie fans. And viceversa could very well be even less likely as I would imagine (in my unfair prejudice of Bowie-ites) that you guys just consider us to be dirty hippies who can only stand to listen to the rambling tunes we listen to because of drugs. I’ll bet you have a pretty darn special wife there for ranging across those wide worlds..

I’ll bet you have a pretty darn special wife there for ranging across those wide worlds..Bowie was definitely weird and, more importantly for myself, all aspects of the glam rock scene were largely lost on me. High levels of theatrics and makeup are just about as opposite from the dead vibe as you can get. In my older age, I’ve come to respect artists like Bowie (almost all rock and pop originating in the 70’s seems to have a high level of production and theatrical elements) and can even appreciate it for what it is.

and on the subject of Pops
for me.. I follow the general rule of ‘hate the game, not the player’
Pops plays the game. We can judge him and others on this, but the fact is that the NBA officials regulate the game and have created this madness. I won’t judge him on his theatrics, because he is playing the game, and he is one of the best for many reasons – not all as pure as we would like. I don’t have problems with coaches doing this stuff per se; I have a problem with the league not uniformly enforcing their rules. I have MUCH more problem with the fact that Pops is not getting TO’d during some of these exchanges when another coach or player would have for the same thing.
So I don’t want to judge Pops’ on-court class count based upon a broken system that he merely using to his advantage.
The issue is different (for me) than it is for player’s who flop, because a flop takes advantage of the difficulty of the charge/block call.

I don't hate Pops
Even on the court. But “classy” on the court is the guy who watches stoically most of the time, like Nate or Phil. Not that it’s the right way, or even a good idea, but it IS classy.
And yeah, my wife is pretty cool like that- everyone loves her (in a platonic way, hopefully).
It isn’t so much the look of Glam Rockers that I like- after all, they didn’t do videos then, so I don’t picture their personas when I hear their music- it’s the simple, catchy melodies that still have some depth and uniqueness, especially for the time. Bowie and Elton John were the best of that bunch.
It’s why I don’t like Jam Bands- not enough “catchy little ditty”, too much “2-hour version of 3 minute song”. And yes, the Dirty Little Drugged-Out Hippy is not an image I aspire to.

hah last point on this thread
it is funny how different people are because I spent most of my life aspiring to grow up into bein that dirty drugged out hippie and when I achieved it.. it was amazing.. and then i segued it into a nutty professor type..
and I love the ambling songs.. yes i do..

Hey now
There’s no reason to be ripping on the real David Bowie here!
That is offensive to me, please desist.
And you’re going to have quite a list if you start judging people by pictures taken of them in the 70s.

fair enough
I formally unrec myself for bashing the real David Bowie..
It was just when a user named davidbowie calls out Pops on class.. I feel obligated to point out that class takes on many forms, and I personally do feel that David Bowie was exceptionally silly from Ziggy Stardust to Labyrinth.. but silly does not make classless…

I love Pop. He seems like a throwback to me.
Put him in a wider lapel suit jacket and he turns into Doug Moe or Dick Motta.
I’m in no mood to see Nate fired, but I wouldn’t sad to see Pop come to Portland someday. I could imagine him drinking pints with the rabble at the Basement Pub.
Hit it. Yes he did. Ohhhh yeah.
He's a wine drinker
Popovich is a big time wine drinker.
He snobbishly snorts in the general direction of the rabble at the Basement pub.

I've read that before
What they don’t mention is the real benefit of owning a winery- being able to import wine at a better tax rate. Many wine collectors own part stakes in wineries for this reason. Also, it’s a good place to store your excess bottles without having to worry about insurance issues.
Plus it makes for great puff pieces when league sentiment is going against you. Say, for turning beet-red and screaming every time a whistle blows on the court.
Great coach, but the kind you can only truly love when he’s yours.
