MLS!!!!

The Oregonian is saying Portland is in all likelihood going to be awarded an MLS franchise on Friday.

This is a big deal!!! I love Timber's games but the players come and go so often that its hard to make a connection with anyone.

"Sources close to the deal have confirmed privately that Major League Soccer will award Portland an expansion franchise Friday, two days after Vancouver, B.C., was given a team and one day after Seattle's team makes its debut in the top tier of United States soccer. League officials would not confirm that Portland has been given a team."

Is anyone else especially excited?

I think its pretty cool

I look forward to watching the MLS Timbers play the Earthquakes down here in the Bay Area (assuming I’m still down here when Portland gets a team).

I'm not really sure

why anyone at City Hall thinks this is a good idea. I mean, isn’t MLS tanking in the US? Maybe it’s doing better than I thought. If Portlanders actually fill PGE park during every home game then it might be worth having an MLS team. I’m really on the fence about it, even though I am a soccer fan and will probably go to the games when the team kicks off their first season in 2011.

I'm thinking one game a season, specifically a Thirsty Thursday if they still do those for MLS.

There won't be clean officiating in the NBA until David Stern is forcibly removed by the US Congress in 2013 for fixing games.

revenues

gate revenue < corporate sponsorship revenue

they don’t necessarily need to sell out in order to make money…but i would think they would suffer from lack of corporate sponsorships. i dont forsee the blazers losing out too much on gate revenue if MLS were to come, but i would expect the blazers to get less corporate sponsors since theres a new show in town.

But the two are related...

Corporate sponsorships only come about if people actually show up to the games. If no one shows up, why would corporations waste their marketing dollars especially in a down economy (though that point may be irrelevant in two years)?

by portlandpete on Mar 19, 2009 4:24 PM PDT up reply actions

large market vs small market

population size and tv viewership is a big determinant as well. there are tons of teams who are economically viable without selling out all their games. where as we sell out all of our games and the blazers are still in the red i believe. the knicks on the other hand have had a terrible team these past few years and despite their bloated team salary, are still one of the leagues better teams in terms of income i believe.

i could look all this up on forbes, but i’m a bit lazy.

This town will not be a one sport town now.

Therefore the fans will not be passionate.

A passionate home arena = lots of wins.

We won’t have a passionate home arena.

Therefore we won’t have lots of wins.

If you don’t have lots of wins, you end up in the draft lottery.

We won’t have lots of wins.

Ummm that money

wouldn’t be going to police and fireman. They are helping Merrit secure $60 million in bonds, that the team is going to be repaying back. Fireman, police, and teachers don’t repay the money, its not like they are giving him anything other than a loan.

So to explain in simple terms money that goes to police and firemen is payment not a loan. This is not a loan this is helping secure bonds for the team, which merrit paulson himself is guaranteeing.

No money is going to be lost by the city. And the money that is being secured is wouldn’t exist if not for the bonds that Paulson and the team is paying back.

Just because Paulson promises to pay it all back doesn’t mean he ultimately will. If the team flops or the league folds, I guarantee he’ll find a way to dump the burden on the city. But the current politicians will most likely to gone by then, so they don’t care.

I have no problem with MLS or soccer, i think its great Portland is getting a team, however I think it is absurd to waste that amount of money to get an MLS team, and to build a minor league baseball stadium. PGE Park is more then good enough to host both soccer and baseball. If we are gonaa spend money and demolish the Memorial Coliseum then I say we save our money and build a Major League baseball team on that spot. I think haveing the Tampa Bay Rays or Oakland A’s in Portland would be a lot more benifical to the city then the MLS.

MLS franchise fee is $40 million

That’s the salary base alone of the teams in MLB – Rays, Marlins, etc. – that are the lowest in the league.

That’s without buying the team. Or building the (most likely >35,000 seat) stadium. And if you want to expand – as if MLB would allow expansion right now – that fee is likely to be in the hundreds of millions of dollars. Multiple hundreds, I’d bet.

NFL expansion – as if we had a chance – would probably be over $1 billion.

Compared to the other pro sports, this is a minuscule amount of money.

Get a dish/cable plan and watch champion's league :)

I went through the list of current MLS players, and these are the names I recognize from international competition or European leagues:

  • David Beckham (starting to decline, and it seems like he splits time between MLS and Italy)
  • Cuauhtemoc Blanco (badly aging)
  • Landon Donovan
  • Stefan Frei
  • Frankie Hejduk
  • Kasey Keller (badly aging)
  • Freddie Ljungberg

Out of a few hundred player. Oh oh. Maybe there are some promising youngsters in there who have not yet taken the international stage and I’m happy for you guys if you get a team, but lets face it the MLS is not even in the same ballpark as the European soccer leagues or the other major leagues in US sports. The quality was higher in the days of Pele and Beckenbauer playing for the NY Metro Stars.

But that’s honestly because women’s professional soccer in the rest of the world – even England – is honestly equivalent to rookie or single-A baseball. It’s not an exaggeration.

The MLS may not be any better than the fizzy-pop Championship over in England, but that’s the sixth most followed soccer league in Europe. Oh, sure, MLS is still growing. But it’s affordable for fans and has a lot of very, very passionate fans who travel all around the country.

I think this is great for Portland

The MLS league kicks off – pun intended – tonight, and – including the playoffs – runs until late October and November. The Blazers are only just tipping off as the MLS year ends, and – assuming our boys make playoff runs on the regular – there’s still four or five months where the MLS-ified Portland Timbers would be the only pro team active in the city.

This won’t take away from the Blazers – unless you thought the Mariners and Seahawks took away from the Sonics. This deal, money-wise, makes sense. It looks like the two teams to be added will be Portland and Vancouver, which – along with the Sounders – make up what’s already a pretty crazy northwest rivalry.

Soccer is a great sport to watch in person. Go out to a Timbers game this summer – even when it’s not Thirsty Thursday – and just follow along. And then take a gaze over at the Timbers Army, and realize that’s what the crazies in Section 300 of the Rose Garden hope they could be all the time.

Give the sport a chance. It will be good to have two big-league teams in Portland. I’m going to hop on the season-ticket preorder list as soon as I can and it becomes open.

Hell, it’s already better than five years ago. Look at foreign basketball— it’s quality has grown by leaps and bound the last decade because of the foreign players coming t the NBA. The US is finally getting our players into top quality leagues in Eurpoe and it’s starting to show in the better quality of play in our players. That trickles down to the pro leagues here and wait until the Euro teams start investing— and they will, the potential market is way too big for them not to.

why MLS is going to be great in Portland

It is another PRO-sports team, we no longer will be a one team town. We will have a sports team to go see when the NBA is not in season.

Portland will never ever ever get an MLB team. It is not going to happen. It is not even close to happening. The Mariners have a lock on this market, there are many other cities where MLB is more favorable, and there is no way the city is even coming close to being able to put the money together to build a stadium. Not going to happen. Ever.

We have the largest fan crowds in the USL for the Timbers by a large margin. This will translate to the next level, just as the sounders have. The sounders have already sold out for this season, with there first game being played today. That is how big MLS is.

Everyone who is thinking that the MLS is a struggling franchise, you are basing your opinion on old information.Teams are starting to turn a profit . Which is better than you can say for most NBA teams, including the Blazers despite the fact that we have sold out this entire year. Struggling, not the case.

MLS has the potential to be one of the best leagues in the world. Its much bigger and covers a much greater area and population than any other professional soccer league. With the expansions, and an increase in turnout, this league can become the best in the world, for the exact same reasons that the NBA is going to continue to be the best in the world.

We could actually have an international championship in Portland. And I am not talking about the fact that the NBA has a team in Toronto. Professional soccer teams have the opportunity to play in a lot of different leagues where we can see match-ups between our club and European and Mexican clubs. How freaking cool is that?

Beer and seats are cheaper at soccer events. You want to take your kids to a fun night watching a sporting event but you don’t feel like getting a nosebleed at the Rose Garden? Take the kids out to a soccer match. Conversely feel like drinking beer with your friends at game? Not feeling like paying 8 dollars for a miller? Go to a soccer game.

Profanity-laced-chants. The crowd at TImbers games are a ridiculous amount of fun. you learn fun chants, you get to yell and scream at refs. Much much more creative than the RG crowd. It really is a ton of fun, if you are talking trash and have never been to a game, then you have absolutely no grounds to say a game is boring or that the quality of play is not very good. Because you have never experienced it, and you have never seen it. Also there is a darn good chance Pele reincarnated could be playing in front of you and you would still be complaining about the level of play. Because you are completely basing this on your own preconceived notions, and have not given soccer a chance.

MLS to Portland is going to be awesome. I am pumped, and you all should come out to a game, when they get here. Or even go to a Timber’s game this year, to get a small taste of how awesome MLS in Portland is going to be. Learn the game and you will love it, I can guarantee you.

Portland will get MLB in my lifetime. The numbers—population, ratings, etc., dictate that it will. But it won’t happen until we can get a stadium built, and we are not close to that at this point.

Is that someone's bedroom? That's awesome.

Don’t know if my wife would want me putting one of Reser or Comerica or Lambeau though… seeing as I’m over the age of 13 (legally)

MLS has the potential to be one of the best leagues in the world.

Let’s talk in five years.

by ArbyOSU on Mar 19, 2009 3:13 PM PDT up reply actions

yes

That would be the potential aspect, congratulations on understanding basic terms.

I mean I don’t even know why you came to this page. You have no idea what you are talking about, clearly didn’t read any of the posters, and are writing unfunny posts. If you seriously don’t care about this stuff then don’t click on the link that says “MLS”. I am sure there are plenty of other sites that you could be hanging around at.

I mean if you have anything real to say, spit it out, because right now you’re just babbling.

From the back of Travis Outlaw's Franz card: Travis leads the team in monstrous thunder dunks, wins awards for post game interviews, and often gets extra points for degree of difficulty.

From the back of Greg Oden's Franz card: Nickname: Jaws. Has an insatiable desire to tear rims apart while cruising the open court, and was once interested in using head-gear for his profession.

Terrible idea

I am concerned the soccer players will wear off on the Blazers and all the Blazers will start flopping and complaining about calls with outlandish flailing arm motions.

He's more of a salesman and a lobbyist than a flopper.

He’s a salesman in that he likes to throw in a little extra flailing for effect, just to catch the ref’s attention, and a lobbyist because he’s constantly (as most NBA all star types tend to do) whining to refs to the point he basically gets to make calls.

MLS in the Bay

MLS has been successful here in the Bay area and there is no shortage of sports options here (2 NFL teams, 2 MLB teams, 1 NBA team, and 1 NHL team)

People love the games here and compared to Portland soccer doesn’t even seem very big around here. Soccer is huge in Oregon, every weekend you will driving around and every park is just FULL of kids playing soccer.

I hope I can get a bunch of championships, like 15. " - Greg Oden

I talk to Randy Leonard about it

over at Loaded Orygun.

We talk more about financing, the tiff with the county and the Blazers—but also how the AAA park will influence the Rose Quarter and Allen’s ideas for a live entertainment district.

Kids play soccer everywhere

And still soccer is irrelevant. Soccer apologists have been saying for years, “When these kids who play youth soccer grow up, they will watch soccer.” For years they have said this and it has never come to pass. I’m glad Portland is getting some national rep as a sports town but soccer is not the answer here.

I love to play soccer. There are few things more fun to play than a good, hard hitting soccer game. Yet even so, there are few more boring things to watch than a soccer game. At least in hockey, they are skating and they fight sometimes. Soccer consists of pretty boy Euros flopping and feigning injury. Why isn’t Pau Gasol playing?

Baseball.

What is the point of going to the game? You spend most of the time watching the scoreboard to see if that last pitch was a strike or a ball. Maybe they might hit a ball near you… yay?

Like its been pointed out before Soccer is on the rise. All those things that people have been saying have translated into teams making money this year. And expanding. Its not like a struggling program will just all of a sudden add more teams for no reason. Merrit Paulson is a smart business man, Greg Kerfoot is a smart man. They are not just going to put their personal fortunes on the line for no reason. There is a market for MLS and it is getting bigger.

Yea pretty boys flopping, how about you watch a freaking game, or say that to Rooney or Zidane.

I got nothing against Zidane. I actually enjoy World Cup, country vs. country, but pro soccer bores me to tears.

When I was a kid in the 70s they started saying that about soccer— that the kids playing would grow up and become spectators. But the NASL was a horribly run league and then— poof— nothing to watch in this country for decades. Without a viable league that plays year in year out you can’t build a base. That base is only now being rebuilt. Even if much of mainstream anglo america doesn’t pick it up quickly (it’s going to take generations of people taking their kids to games to build a large and rabid fan base), the latin population explosion in this country will make it relevent.

Not even up for debate

Paulson said they are keeping the Timbers name. Branding is already here in the market, why bother with trying to build a new brand?

by portlandpete on Mar 19, 2009 4:39 PM PDT up reply actions

Yawn

I’d rather watch paint dry than watch soccer. God knows I’ve tried watching soccer. Maybe if they’d get rid of that stupid off side rule and have an actual time clock so everyone would know when the game’s over it wouldn’t be such bore. But then, maybe it still would be.

That said, I’d be in favor of a pro hop scotch league coming to Portland as long as it doesn’t reduce our chances of getting another major sport team such as ML baseball, NFL football, or NHL hockey.

by kuhnsmith on Mar 19, 2009 4:39 PM PDT reply actions

NHL?

Do you really consider NHL a major sport when it’s carried mostly on Vs.? There are more soccer games on ESPN than Hockey games.

by stax o' wax on Mar 19, 2009 5:08 PM PDT up reply actions

There is a reason why

Portland was recently ranked almost dead last in manliness. Look at our mayor. Also, we love soccer more than real American sports like football or baseball.

by swg777 on Mar 19, 2009 4:40 PM PDT reply actions

How can there be anything manlier than being gay? That is the ultimate love of manness. And football and soccer have the same mother— they’re brothers. And since girls these can play both baseball and football, the manliness has been drained from both of those sports. (How manly can you really be in super tight pants, anyway?) And that manliness ranking? They clearly meant Red Neck Ranking. Not the same thing.

Fellow Timbers fans, is the grass really greener in MLS?

What if this means:

- Assigned tickets (i.e. no more amorphous Army section)

- Compared to now, paying double or more to get in the gate

- $8 beers and a more “entertaining” atmosphere, like the Rose Garden

- Cracking down on off-color chants

- Widmer beer garden turned into luxury suites

Is it still worth it?

by El Rojo on Mar 19, 2009 7:24 PM PDT reply actions

It is if we can see it on grass. I cannot emphasize that enough. Soccer on fake turf isn’t soccer. It’s more akin to indoor soccer and just as ugly.

Common Comment...

… and something that really is part of a bigger sports issue. Some people are action or athletics fans. They like a lot of scoring and physical play in their sport. Others are sports startegy fans— they like the strategy of a given sport or the different styles/flows of a given sport. People can share both attributes (or a percentage of each type in their own personal make up), but the latter is a more intellectual pursuit and IMHO is a minority in the sports fan world. I’m always amazed at people who call soccer boring, but can’t see the dullness available in the sports they themselves like (especially baseball and football— two sports I like, but most of the rest of the world finds downright boring.)

by stax o' wax on Mar 21, 2009 4:15 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't have anything against soccer, it's a great sport. My problem is with Portland's perpetual minor league state of mind

And yes Major League Soccer is minor league.

MLB, even NHL I could support and maybe get interested in. This? Nah. Even the MLS’s ‘star’ won’t play in the at league full time.

NHL teams lose money. So do MLB teams. But it seems that if PA wanted an NHL team we’d have one by now. And I can say that the NHL would fit in nicely here. I would LOVE an NHL team.
