Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

In the same night Captain Kirk beams himself up for the block of the night, and beams the ball away from Paul Pierce for the steal of the night. And he did it all against the Celtics, on St Patty's Day, while wearing GREEN. I'm starting to get a man crush.

I don't know about cute.

But he puts up Steve Blake numbers and is a much better defender. I still say he would be great for us.

There won't be clean officiating in the NBA until David Stern is forcibly removed by the US Congress in 2013 for fixing games.

Exactly

That’s what everyone misses in the Hinrich debate. Being a lot like Steve Blake is not a bad thing for this team. At all.

In fact, being a lot like Steve Blake AND a much better defender is a good things for this team. A perfect thing, even. I don’t care how much he gets paid.

9 points, 3 rebs, 6 assists, 2 TOs, 2 steals, 2 blocks - a nice well rounded contribution!!

Let’s see can we dump BOTH Sergio and Bayless and get the Captain?

In other news: John Salmons goes Kobe!!!!!! 38 points?? WTF!!!! Who woulda thunk????

I think they absolutely robbed the Kings by getting Salmons and Miller

I didn’t think they would ever get out of Nocioni’s contract and yet they got some good talent for it. A+ trade by Chicago

the bulls just need to wear green more.

"There are a few teams you have to watch out for in the fourth quarter."
"Yeah, but Portland definitely is not one of them."

-New Orleans Hornets broadcasters at the end of the third quarter with the Hornets leading 74-59. Portland later ends up winning 97-89.

"They don't mind him shooting that shot at all. Rudy Fernandez is not that great of a 3pt shooter."

-New Orleans Hornets broadcasters right after a Rudy Fernandez missed 3pter. Rudy Fernandez finished the game with three 3pters on six attempts.

it was a salary dump by the Kings

they are rebuilding. Salmons and Miller have nothing to offer them.

Why Sac took Nocioni on the other hand, I have no idea.

They need to consult with Memphis on how to do a salary dump

They got hosed

Salmons isn't that old though

And he doesn’t make that much. Why does he have nothing to offer? I don’t get why they were so adament to move him. I guess he and KMart replicate each other’s skills too much.

Salmons might make Deng expendable

I wonder if there’s any way the Blazers can swing a deal for both Deng and Hinrich.

The base-year compensation thing baffles me, so I never understood why it couldn’t happen. But this summer it can. Maybe. Are there enough contracts/cap space?

Hinrich/Bayless
Roy/Rudy
Deng/Batum
LMA/? (Blair? Pretty please?)
Oden/Przy

Now THAT’S a team.

Ok would he be worth trading Blake and 6 million of cap relief this offseason

I'd trade the non-guaranteed contract of Travis Outlaw, oft-injured Martell Webster, and Sergio ...

Rodriguez to the Chicago Bulls for Kirk Hinrich during the midst of the 2009 NBA Draft. I’d also look to move Jerryd Bayless, but I’d wait until the actual off-season — which begins on 7/1/2009 — to pull off such a transaction.

by AK1984 on Mar 18, 2009 1:14 AM PDT up reply actions

Really giving up on Jerryd, that seems to be the sentiment of a lot of people lately

Personally I think Jerryd needs time. He was doing great until Blake got back and he got benched again.

I am not rulling out Bayless till I see him play back up point for a full season.

Great trade

That way we have 2 very similar point guards, one small forward, and nobody who can get their own shot off the bench.

Also there is no way Chicago would want that many wing players

I think if we want Hinrich giving up one player and cap room would be the way to do it.

If I was Chicago's GM, I would ask for Blake in any trade for Hinrich, and also to get my 2010 second rounder and another pick back

Sergio can’t play together with Rose to close out games as an off-guard standing in the corner. Blake can, like Hinrich does now with Rose or like Blake does now with Roy. That would make it harder, but I would still think the deal would be reasonable for both parties. Yet Chicago only trades Hinrich if they feel confident that helps them to stay under the luxury tax and keep Gordon (or after Gordon already has re-signed with them). Then he becomes expendable.

by Norsktroll on Mar 18, 2009 2:01 AM PDT up reply actions

Thats why Blake and cap works so well for Chicago

And Hinrich should work well for us. In this economy however it is the Blazers that should be getting more picks from Chicago, not the other way around. Taking off an expensive contract is just too valuable

Wait on Bayless.

He is dirt cheap. The odds of him becoming a success story are debatable (I give it 50/50) but it’s still a ridiculously cheap gamble. Let him rot on the bench for four years. There are worse things than wasting a 13th pick.

by Nick Van Excellent on Mar 18, 2009 2:23 AM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

I would trade for Hinrich just to call him the Captain

I didn’t know that nickname was included in the package. That adds $3 mil per year in value, without question. That’s probably what all those people criticizing his contract are missing.

I had a buddy in college named Kirk

We all called him Captain Kirk and he would drink Captain Morgans just so we would say “You and the Captain Make it Happen”

I saw this title and thought we didn't resign

“The Captain” Rich Patterson. I was like…..wow, someone actually knows who he is (I think he’s a studio engineer for Wheels and Tone’s broadcast) and cares that we let him go?

Such a better deal when RLEC was still available

I still can’t believe KP froze up on the Hinrich/Deng deal

(Now I’d rather see him go hard after Sessions in the offseason)

Hinrich and Blake to go along with Roy and Rudy?

priceless

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside.
