bench play for contenders

A post by Kevin Arnovitz over at TrueHoop takes a look at the benches of playoff contenders and has some rather nice things to say about the Blazers:

Star-divide

Few teams have a second unit that has sculpted a more distinct personality than Portland's core bench players: The Spanish Armada of Rudy Fernandez and Sergio Rodriguez, the unguardable freakish jump shot of Travis Outlaw, and -- when Greg Oden is healthy -- the militantly efficient Joel Przybilla. It isn't a stretch to suggest that Portland has as many as nine players on its roster that would start for most NBA teams.

This depth affords Nate McMillan not only the opportunity to rest his starters, but a great deal of flexibility. Both Outlaw and starter Nicolas Batum are effective small forwards, but in entirely different ways. The same is true at point guard, where starter Steve Blake's steadiness is complimented by the creativity of Sergio Rodriguez -- to say nothing of rookie Jerryd Bayless' skills as a combo guard.  Both Przybilla and Oden are strong defensive presences, and if the Blazers need to spread the floor, Outlaw has the length to play the 4.

If the Blazers aren't still playing on Memorial Day, it won't be because there weren't enough tools in the shed.

Now I know there hasn't been great consistency coming off the bench as of late, what with injuries screwing up the rotation and perhaps a bit of fatigue factoring in, but Arnovitz is right on with his analysis of the team.  There is some fantastic talent riding the pine, the trick is just harnessing it and making the players perform.  This means inserting them into the right situations and at the right time (looking at you here Nate).  One thing about the bench (with the exception of Joel who i feel can fill in anywhere) is that they are not great all-around players; they're specialized for various styles of play and need to be managed well to be successful.

One issue not raised in the post is how this bench (which has struggled with confidence issues for a while now) will respond mentally to the challenge of the playoffs.  If it ends up that the Blazers have a "throw away" game here at the end of the season (not likely, I know) where they can't help themselves by winning, I'd love to see some bench players get the start and see what they can do with it.

Also, this article backs my assumption that the team should be aiming for a first round matchup against New Orleans.  That's probably the best bet of getting through the uncomfortable first playoff series for these guys.  Thoughts?

Thoughts Indeed!

I think we’ll be in trouble when other playoff teams shorten their rotations and ride their starters for long stretches. When this happens and our bench doesn’t consistently have other benches to bully we’ll be in trouble. In this scenario, New Orleans is a huge concern. This happened in a huge way to that brilliantly coached Memphis team with James Posey (I think Hubie Brown was coach?). Rode a great ten-man rotation through the regular season and couldn’t perform when the opposition rode their starters longer in the playoffs.

And what about that last sentence you quoted? Whose fault will it be, then, if the Blazers don’t make it past mem. day?

well it's down to Nate to recognize what other teams are doing

and make his own adjustments. I’d be really surprised if we were to see a lot of Channing or Sergio in the playoffs and I’d also be really surprised if we didn’t see Brandon and LMA get their 40 minutes. It’s the playoffs, things change. That said, there will be spots for this bench to come up huge and it will be a matter of making the most of them.
You’re right though, we will still be relying on our bench more than other teams which will mean some situations where our bench is going up against their (slightly more tired) starters. These will be critical stretches, but remember, because we have more to reach for on the bench, we can play more loose than the other team, not having to worry as much about fouls.
Certainly some pros & cons.

Umm?

Our bench has gotten beat the last 7 games.

I blame this all on Frye of course, but the fact remains.

by Zaig on Mar 17, 2009 10:37 AM PDT reply actions

Don't think you can aim for an opponent in the playoffs at the best of times...

and certainly not when its a crapshoot as to who will end up where. Try to win every game and if need be if we get too close to falling out of the playoffs shorten your rotation (or other desperate measure)!

Our bench has been a strength during the season as it allowed Roy and LMA to play less minutes, helped keep troops fresh, get rookies some PT and help when we had injuries. I agree that in the playoffs this will be less of a strong point for us as the pressure to win each game and the individual player’s weaknesses will be more exposed (ie people are better prepared for B-Rex’s, Rudy’s, Sergio’s, Frye’s limitations).

Be that as it may the bench players will gain experience and might have an impact on a game or two… especially if GO gets back. Not sure if Martell will play or impact much.

Next year these young guys’ games should be more rounded and they will contribute even more for the Blazers or maybe someone else.

8 men.

2 centers, 3 forwards and 3 guards.

Joel and Greg for 48.

LaMarcus, Travis, Brandon, Rudy and Steve for 35 each.

Nic gets the rest.

We’ll stagger into the playoffs on young and tired legs, but finish satisfied there and improved.

Bedge or go home.

I like your plan a lot, but what happens when Greg gets in foul trouble (as he will, due to the fact that he gets called for fouls based on the refs’ collective preconceived notion that he is foul-prone, oh crap, I should have saved that thought for a fanpost)? I think we all know what happens in that circumstance, and it is not pretty. Unless Nate is willing to go small for huge stretches…but can Broy guard the 3?

Maybe 6 or 8 munutes a game of Broy at the 3?

Do we get a couple minutes of Joel and Greg together?

Bedge or go home.

by Ojala John on Mar 17, 2009 12:16 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree

PTB will shorten the rotation just as much as the competition. However; it does count on GO being a big presence. That’ll allow Joel to play loose. Two dominant big men would be huge. Hopefully that comes to fruition.

by keepfryealive on Mar 17, 2009 11:56 AM PDT up reply actions

Yes, which mean...

It is clear that Greg Oden is a big part of how good Portland is in the RIGHT NOW. We definitely need Oden to be recovered and mobile after this injury. He will have 15 to 10 games to get his rhythm back before playoffs start. For all the people complaining about Oden and wanting him gone, looking at this team in the playoffs just IS NOT the same if Oden is not on the team. I would love to see Oden be a man-child in the post season.

by Portland Dynasty on Mar 17, 2009 3:50 PM PDT up reply actions

That's plenty

Billa can grab the other 28-36. On nights where Greg can stay out of foul trouble, Billa can rest more. Those two can go for 48 combined pretty easily.

Lately we've seen descent play from our "small lineup"

with Trout at 4 and Lma at 5 for a few minutes. That is the worst case senario if Oden/Pryz get into foul trouble. We have a very nice rotation and even though Frye is not Oden or Lma he does give meaninful play out there, just not all-star type play we get from Lma.

Our biggest weakness is that our team plays well only with certain units. The Mix and match units during the Rudy injury did not fucntion as well due the lack of playing time togther with many young players. If we have our guys healthy, then our pre-established black and white units our strong. We get into trouble when playing with grey units, as more turnovers happen and ball movement stagnates. Nate seems to be using these last games to bridge the gap of player flexibility between units and allow for familiarity in the Grey units.

this guy didn't get the memo that Sergio sucks

or maybe he has just been actually watching the games objectively. Sergio has played excellent games lately against the spurs (twice) and Lakers, and those are kind of big games.

Really? most NBA teams? After Roy, Aldridge, Joel, and Greg.. I’m just not sure I buy it. Travis may start or get starting minutes on most teams. Rudy and Nic.. a stretch to say most teams.. Sergio and Bayless? I’m sure there is a team or two, but most?

I love our depth but lets be realistic

i love Martell

this year he is like that chicken nugget or onion ring that gets separated from the pack and you find like 10 mins after finishing the rest while it is still hot and you’re like.. bottom-of-the-bag-score!!

absolutely forgot about Martell who would start or get starter minutes on at least half the nba teams..

Your point's still valid tho-

We have eight leaguewide starter/sixth man caliber guys I think: Greg, Joel, LMA, Martell, Travis, Broy, Steve and Rudy.

Nic’s getting close.

Jerryd, Sergio and Channing aren’t.

Bedge or go home.

by Ojala John on Mar 17, 2009 4:24 PM PDT up reply actions

Blake would also start on quite a lot of NBA teams, albeit not on "most"

And the ninth player would have to be Sergio, Jerryd or Channing, so that’s a real stretch.

by Norsktroll on Mar 17, 2009 4:28 PM PDT up reply actions

idk

I think Rudy could start on any of the bottom feeders in the West and at least half of the EC teams. I think he still has the potential to be a featured scorer on a team, rather than just a complementary role player like he is used on the blazers. He just needs to work on a few more aspects of his game.

by premthegrem on Mar 17, 2009 4:38 PM PDT up reply actions

and I forgot a few other teams:

NO, Utah and Phoenix could all use him as a starter beside their star PG’s. A guy like Rudy is pretty much the missing championship piece for like 3-4 teams in the West, because he has that ability to shoot the 3 like a complementary 2 guard.

by premthegrem on Mar 17, 2009 4:43 PM PDT up reply actions

Nate's rotations hide A LOT of our bench deficiencies...

There really is only a few minutes at the end of the 1st beginning of 2nd quarters and end of the 3rd beginning of the 4th quarters that we have a lineup of Sergio/Bayless, Rudy, Trout, LMA and Frye. That unit almost always seems to lose ground when it is in there. Thankfully it’s a short period of time. The reason the “Portland Bench” is thought to be good, is that Trout and Rudy are mixed in a lineup with a majority of starters and get good numbers. Plus, couple that with when Joel was coming off the bench and we had three 2nd unit guy playing starter-like minutes with Roy and LMA on the floor.

by JasonT on Mar 17, 2009 4:13 PM PDT reply actions

To finish my thought....

we do not a very effective 2nd unit, when a majority of the starters are sitting on the bench. Our 2nd unit guys pretty much thrive when one or two of them are mixed in with the starters. So, for the most part, Nate has done a good job of rotating the bench guys in situations with lineups in which they can be effective…as evidenced by the perception of this writer that we have a strong bench.
