Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

PLEASE bring Oden in off the bench

This post is not intended as a slam to GO, but what I think would help the blazers the most at this point in time. He had a 5 game streak early in the year when he was coming off the bench where he went for 9.5 reb., 13 pts, and 2.5 blks per game. He has had most of his success this year against weaker opponets and for the most part struggled vs the good ones. Joel has been playing very well for us in the starting role and has had good games when playing against the better teams in the league. We would really have some fire power in the 2nd unit with GO, TO, and Rudy coming off the bench. I do not think there are very many (if any) teams who could match up to that group with their 2nd units. Its nice that we have two good centers that we could do a move like this. On most teams in the league a player like Oden would have to be inserted back into the starting lineup asp,and I am sure the blazers will be one of them in a year or two as his game improves. But for now lets bring him off the bench and DESTROY other teams 2nd units!!

It is a thought.

Even though I think it might help with Oden’s development though to have him playing against starting caliber centers every night. He’s going to have to feel the pressure sometime and he’s already a year behind.

We've tried ths

Oden starting leads to decreased confidence and early foul trouble. He’ll catch up just fine. His quickness is not near 100% yet.

by lurtsman on Mar 15, 2009 9:05 AM PDT up reply actions

For sure.

Sometimes he looks perplexed by the fact that he isn’t as fast as he used to be. I would be totally cool with Joel starting, I just don’t think that it’s an obvious choice. Either way has it’s benefits and downfalls.

Oden off the Bench sounds good until he starts to blow up then Start him.

What I am more interested in is he coming back soon I haven’t heard any updates recently does he have a timeline.

On the quick chat on o-live

Quick was thinking by the way he was looking in practice that he could be back for the cleveland or milwaukee game at the end of this trip. He did say that it was just his opinion though and far from official.

ODEN OFF THE BENCH

I hate when Oden starts the tone seems to be set for the game in the first 5 minutes either he gets off or he’s in foul trouble. He’s a beast off the bench and the thought that he wont match up against the other teams center is wrong, as the Blazers have shown it’s not how you start but how you finish that counts. P.S. Leave Batum in longer please!!!!!!!!!!

by hayeclan on Mar 15, 2009 8:00 AM PDT reply actions

Agreed

And it’s not like he’d only play with the 2nd unit. He’d still get at least half the center minutes, which means he’d play against the other teams first unit about half the game, and the other teams 2nd unit half the game.

I’d even say lets finish the year that way, and Nate should say so publicly to remove the pressure and the whispering and hand wringing. Oden would have a job defined and wouldn’t have to worry beyond that. And if he comes off the bench and is playing well, he can still play 35 minutes.

by matthewcc on Mar 15, 2009 8:07 AM PDT reply actions

Oden would provide an inside scoring threat on the 2nd unit...

right now the 2nd unit almost exclusively shoots from the perimeter…and that’s with LMA in there.

I thought you meant in THIS game...

… and was going to say he would not be as much of a factor in th expensive suit he’d be wearing.

According to Nate, Oden will finish the season coming off the bench

I was at the WellsFargo Fantasy event last Thursday and Nate was asked the question about how Greg will be used when he comes back and Nate said something along the lines of “Greg will come off the bench for the rest of the year. Joel has earned the right to start and the team is in a good flow right now.” He didn’t say it in those exact words, but that was pretty much the gist of what he was saying. He seemed pretty definitive in his stance and did say that he hadn’t even told his coaches that yet. He probably just said that last part to make all of the people that were there for the fantasy event feel like they were insiders (which. obviously worked on me), but I’ve got to think that the coaches/players have already been told.

by ThereGoDaGame on Mar 15, 2009 9:12 AM PDT reply actions

Good

I really think having Oden come off the bench will be the best thing, both for him and the team. Oden needs some playing time to get into a flow, he’s not getting that time when he’s out of shape and getting mobbed (and hence fouling). If he comes off the bench, he should get the time to work on his game. Furthermore, the 2nd unit will benefit from his post presence, giving them a third scoring option and a double team magnet (hopefully). Finally, it might help LMA out, because he’s been on a tear since Oden has been out, and this will let him get his confidence with the 1st unit, then get experience doing it with Oden out there without moving towards the outside.

by Gelvalst on Mar 15, 2009 9:56 AM PDT up reply actions

Oden will still develop in the second unit...

It will be good for Nate to give the unit who has been playing strongly lately (that with Joel in the lineup) some continuity coming into playoffs…. PLUS:

- with Oden playing minutes in the second unit and off the bench his matchups will be more favorable to the Blazers and to Oden’s confidence.

- Oden will be MUCH less likely to “Foul Himself out Early” not playing against the games elite talents, which will give him more consistent production by keeping him IN more games.

- With Joel in the starting lineup, Aldridge seems to accept more offensive responsiblity AND absorb the energy of Ferocity from Joel, helping Aldridge play “tougher”.

- Oden hopefully will get more calls going his way playing against lesser names, getting him more involved at the line and giving the second unit a serious threat on the inside.

All-in-all, with a health Oden soon to be returning and the Blazers playing strongly and fully in the HUNT, our team this year is poised to do more than most people are gonna want to give them credit for. I won’t be surprised at all to see Portland not only make the playoffs, but see some second round action.

It could be good

Have GO be the focal point in the post for the 2nd unit, and like people have been saying, both will play about the same minutes and Nate can go with the hot hand at the end of games. The more I think about it, the more I like it

I believe in Greg Oden. To all the haters - get down with the program or stay off the wagon for all time. #52

I'm glad Nate

has stuck to his “You don’t lose a starting job to injury” mantra that he has never actually stuck to put repeats.

by TSE on Mar 15, 2009 12:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Oden didn't lose the starting job

Joel proved he should have had it from game 1.

by jiminut on Mar 15, 2009 2:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Ya I love Oden but,

he’s never really show that he deserves to start. His production is inconsistent, and even when he’s on a good stretch I don’t think his offensive is making up for Joel’s defense/energy/consistency.

by Gelvalst on Mar 15, 2009 4:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah kinda seems like a no-brainer...

I can understand wanting to start Oden in the beginning of the season so that he and the rest of the starting 5 can get used to playing with each other but at this point in the season all that matters are W’s.

I remember reading somewhere that Greg, having been the Man on every other team he’s played on, was having trouble adjusting to playing on Brandon Roy’s team. It might help him get back in the swing of things if he started out on that second unit just until he gets his confidence up. Plus the second unit really does need more scoring punch and that’s one thing GO provides that Gorilla doesn’t.

Hopefully putting him on the second unit will take some of the pressure off him. Sometimes I worry about how he’s going to handle the playoffs. What happens if he misses a critical free throw in game 7?

by Jesus Shuttlesworth on Mar 15, 2009 9:49 AM PDT reply actions

agreed.

I also think that having Oden off the bench puts a lot of pressure on the other teams second unit. If oden blows up there 2nd unit, it may mess up their rotations because they will have to adjust. i’m for anything that stresses out the bad guys.

Wasn't that going to be the plan anyways..

I don’t see how you could start him, especially with the way Joel has been playing, I don’t think it is a question who is the better center at this point. I’m sure Oden is not in game shape anymore further cementing Joel’s starting spot. I just want Greg in there getting experience and confidence and whats a better way then throwing him at a teams second string center.

by JmarcL4 on Mar 15, 2009 1:03 PM PDT reply actions

Oden off the bench

could cause rotation problems for the opponents… i like it ! Plus with Rudy/TO spreading the floor with the 2nd unit, this would really give GO some space to operate and establish his post game.

by jbm01 on Mar 15, 2009 1:33 PM PDT reply actions

yup yup. Rotation problems. Agreed!

Oden off the bench

Problem is he doesn,t get the ball with the bench players. They are all terrible at distributing the ball. When Joel is with the bench players his strengths are magnified because he isn’t an offensive center. They can ignore him and chuck up shots and he can play goalie. Oden is important as a starter because he produces points in the paint and has shown he can do it without a lot of looks. He draws fouls on opposing bigs when he does get the ball. He makes it much easier for Roy and Aldridge because defenses can,t leave him like they do Joel. No one ever double teams Joel, Oden draws a double on almost every touch. Not saying that Oden should start right away but our ceiling is much higher with him starting. Remember we are 14wins and 4 losses when Oden double doubles. Those are almost all games as a starter.

by Odenrising on Mar 15, 2009 2:18 PM PDT reply actions

I think these are good points...

I don’t think Oden can only improve he second unit though. I think we have enough offense in the first unit. teams double Roy and it opens up for the others. Having oden on second unit may open it up for the second unit shooters. Oden could definately be the focal point of that unit.

by DaNoose on Mar 15, 2009 2:49 PM PDT up reply actions

aye, it would really help Rudy/Outlaw

Both players are able to score but they benefit greatly from having a little bit of room to work. Oden getting doubled would help with that. In terms of him not getting the ball, I bet he’d get the ball enough from rebounds to put up good numbers. Also, when he was coming off the bench early in the season, he was getting some wicked passes from Rudy and Sergio, who both seemed to look for him.

by Gelvalst on Mar 15, 2009 4:20 PM PDT up reply actions

If Oden is coming is off the bench an injury won't disrupt team chemistry nearly as much as

it would when he starts. When he gets his speed back and gets a good run of not missing big chunks of the season, then think about starting him again. Lighting up some second string role players might be good for him.
