2009 NBA All Rookie Team
With the season in its last 20 games or so for most teams, i feel our 4 rookies have done extremely well so far, some great highs and a few lows.........
Gregs rebounding and monster dunks, rudys 3s and slam dunk parcipation, jerryds determination and unstoppable drives, nicholas' defense and block shots.........
All in all some great memories in the 2008-09 season!
Which of our rookies will make either the first or second all rookie team?
Please vote or leave your opinions!

which is funny, because coming in
a lot of people suspected Oden and Bayless would be leading the way

those two are coming through huge. My option wasn’t available, so I just have to rek your comment
Considering many call him a bust and injury prone and never amount to anything. If he plays one more game this regular season, he will have played one more game than any time in bynums career, the one non-playing year excepted. Yet NO ONE in LA complains about Bynum being injury prone, all they ever do is talk about how they can’t wait until he comes back.
I think some of it is that Portland remembers Bowie, and secondly that donkeys always REMIND us of that when they talk trash and it angers us that Oden cant prove them wrong until he is healthy. - GreatOden'sRaven

No Way will Batum make it.
The east coast voters will look at his stat line and leave him off. These are NBA awards we are talking about… it doesn’t matter how good you are it matters how big your stats look.

yeah after further thinking i don't know that either of these two will make it,
but they are for sure the two blazers that have a chance. If Batum continues to play like he has lately i think he has an outside shot at second team.

unless oden comes out strong
when he returns from injury, i cant see him as being more than an outsider for even the 2nd team all rookie

No way Oden can make it over Gasol/Lopez.

If he drops
A couple of 30/18/5 nights even the Gasol homers will have to admit Greg deserves some respect. Though I admit the number of games missed because of first quarter fouls and a couple unfortunate collisions will probably keep him off the team. Next season I will expect him to be the best second year center.

Only one of Nic/Rudy is going to make it
which one depends on how strict the selectors are about positions. There are already 4 guards that are locks ahead of Rudy (Rose, Westbrook, Gordon and Mayo), so if they can’t make allowances for position, Rudy isn’t going to beat out one of those guys. There aren’t really that many SFs, out there, though, really just Beasley (as a PF/SF), Mbah a Moute, and Nic. Beasley would probably make it over Nic, but Rudy, if allowed would be in over Nic/Luc.
As far as bigs, I think it’s pretty much a done deal with Lopez, Love, Gasol, and either Thompson or Speights.
With Bayless, I’d bet my life on him not even getting a vote, no offense to the guy.
by Royster on Mar 13, 2009 10:25 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
positions are not considered in rookie team voting
everyone votes for 5 first team guys, and 5 second team guys
How did you guys win that?

Wow, yeah
just checked out last year’s team. In that case, Nic’s got no chance at it.
Just off the top of my head, the big 4 guards, plus Lopez, Gasol, Love, Beasley, Augustin and Rudy would probably be easy picks over Nic.

It's still a little ironic that Batum won't get more love
but it shows how much PPG are valued over ability to shut down MVPs.

besides, rudy qualifies for small forward too.

yea it was a bad year for bayless
with so many good guards coming out in his draft class, nic i dont think will make it purely on stats, rudy is a good chance imo and oden is questionable depending on how he plays when he gets back. i still think hes a decent chance for the 2nd team, as hes better than thompson and speights, and its a toss up for love and gasol, depending how the judges vote.

I think Oden has a somewhat okay chance
but only if he comes back pretty soon and really starts to light it up over this last stretch. I’d certainly rather have him than those bigs, but I’d definitely say that those guys have had a better year overall than Greg has right now, which is why I see them on the team and Oden on the outside.

a key advantage the blazer rookies have
is that they are rotation players on a top playoff contender, most of the other top rookies are on lottery teams.
by Yawnie on Mar 13, 2009 10:46 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
That would be a disadvantage for the all rookie team
Most of the other players are logging 30+ minutes a game. Batum showed today what he can do with that kind of time, but the voters haven’t seen enough of him to give him a chance of making it. Besides Batum and Rudy the other players are getting lots more game time to improve, show their talents, and have people see them. This isn’t a knock or a bad thing for our rookies, except Bayless, who at pg I think would have made the biggest leap with more pt, we just can’t give it to him in the middle of the playoff hunt. He’s lost a lot of confidence it looks like right now, but with his work ethic I think he’ll look a lot better next year.
by KitIsh on Mar 13, 2009 11:08 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
It is a double edged sword
Yes, the players would be more likely to make the team with more PT and stats from playing on a garbage team. However the voters will also consider that rudy was able to score points when we had several other offensive options, the second most effecient offense in the league, and are in the thick of the playoff battle in the west.

I think they prefer
To play for a contender, then a pretender and make the all rookie team.

Rudy will make the 2nd team
that will probobly be it.
Oden’s per minute play is deserving of 2nd or even 1st team, but his injuries and foul trouble will prevent that from happening unless he comes back as a monster down the stretch.
Nic deserves consideration but I don’t think he will make it.

Rudy maybe...Oden outside chance.
Bayless not enough time on the floor and Batum doesn’t get the offensive stats…even though I think he has been one of the most valuable rookies to the Blazers success this season.

I voted for Rudy
he is an exciting player who is well known because of his slam dunk participation and his spanish national team play. He is also of course an excellent player and a great spark.

i see batum as a future
all defensive player, problem there is that it takes a few seasons to establish yourself as a top defender……….
with oden and batum there is the makings of a good defensive front line

nic & rudy deserve it

+1
Even though he deserves it, Nic probably won’t be selected for the all-rookie teams. The voters mostly look at points per game, and there are too many rookies getting lots on minutes and taking lots of shots on bad teams this year. Rudy has a better chance than Nic, but even he might not make it.
by trk on Mar 14, 2009 12:08 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
i agree entirely
when it comes to relevant contribution on relevant teams, it is hard to not vote for them both..
but if Batum can play like tonite down the stretch, it will be harder to ignore how real his contribution is on this team. But I’m sure the easy big stat guys on lame teams will take most of the spots..

an 18 game win streak
will gloss over several lesser stats
It started tonight. Can you smell what McMuffin is cooking? 18 game win streak going into the playoffs for the second seed!

Maybe Rudy on 2nd team, maybe none
Doesn’t matter, if they had an all rookie defensive team Batum would be leading the pack. If they also had a “rookie on a relevant team” award, Portland would have 2-3 guys on it.
I’ll take wins over awards any day.

me too. Its more fun to watch rookies in spot minutes on a playoff team.
then to see rookies leading a team thats going nowhere at the moment. (I’m talking to you derrick rose) Portland used to be that team with Brandon Roy. Now were a playoff team who are not going to get lottery draft picks, and I couldn’t be happier.

roy wasn't really the leader his rookie year.
we still had Z-Bo.
Roy was the clear leader during his second year—and we were on the brink of a playoff berth.

he was the guy that called out Zach in the locker room, he was polerizing right from the start.

Rudy and Nic for the Second Team if they finish strong and the Blazers make the playoffs. Rudy more likely
Nic might get some additional votes for being one of only a handful of rookies to regularly start all season, though others are getting much more minutes. I remember someone from the league told him over All-Star weekend that he barely missed out on the rookies team. Rudy already has a pretty good standing in the league (All-Star weekend selections), and is high on the lists of a number of observers like Thorpe. Positions mean little for those selections.
First team: Locks are Rose, Westbrook, Mayo, Lopez. Then maybe Gordon or Love.
Second team: Beasley, Speights, Rudy, Gasol, ?
Wildcards: Augustin, Chalmers
Hard to say: How much influence does it have when your team sucks?
by Norsktroll on Mar 14, 2009 4:34 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Gordon really should be considered a first team lock
The ? spot on the second team will be filled by whoever misses out of Gordon and Love. I think the only possible open spot for Nic would be Speights on the second team, since he’s stuck a little in the same situation Oden is (real productive, but limited minutes). Beasley has really turned it on since the All star break, and is a legit 2nd option on one of the hottest teams in the league.
Like you said, though, I think Augustin and Chalmers are ahead of Nic. He gets bonus points for playing on a contender, but being a 4th or 5th option every time he’s on the court will really hurt him in the voting.

Despite stats
I think Nico has a good chance, since it’s the head coaches voting. They know what jobs he’s being asked to do, and that he’s doing them as well as anyone on the blazers.
If Oden makes it, it’ll because coaches are thinking long term value. I think it’s more likely he’s left off, in favor of the bigs who missed the All-star rookie team.
I’d be surprised if Rudy misses. The combination of his hype, the quality of play he’s bringing, and minutes he’s getting on a 50 win team will be enough.
by Gelvalst on Mar 14, 2009 6:52 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I am not so sure that other coaches take note
or care enough to put the effort into looking past the stat sheet when voting. If they do then I think Nic has the best chance. If not then maybe Rudy because he is more recognized and has a flashier game which means the coaches will be more aware of who he is (not to mention the Olimpics and All-Star dunk contest).
Of course I hope that both make it. Oden just hasn’t had enough games to be considered plus the latest injury has taken away some of his momentum not to mention that it has robbed him of more game experience and visibility in the All-Star Rookie challenge.
by QuebecBlzrFan on Mar 14, 2009 7:54 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Coaches arn't just average fans,
they shouldn’t just be blinded by flashy. They have to play each team and be aware of scouting reports, personel changes, injuries, matchups, ect. I would suspect that most coaches are aware of Nick. Of course the Rockets and Spurs should be aware, and any team that had a GM in negotiations with the KP, trying to put Batum on the table. They weren’t trying to get him cause he’s going un-noticed. I’m assuming that GM’s comunicate with their coaching staff to discuss percieved holes or other problems with the roster, and a coach would at least be consulted or informed of any interesting possible aquasitions.
