JUst oNe KinD of a RAtional Way EveRyone can support LaMar Odom – 3/12/09

I know a lot of people are upset about the foul Trevor Ariza put on Rudy Fernandez, words cannot describe the rage I felt after watching that foul. He was given a Type 2 flagrant foul and ejected from the game and Stu Jackson decided there was no need for further punishment. WTF? As a Blazers fan, I am outraged that a stricter punishment was not given for that foul.

Now, like I said, I am a true Blazers fan. What I really want to talk about is LaMar Odom. He is a total jerk and Channing Frye, as the team’s enforcer, should have totally punched Odom out last year for that foul on Brandon Roy. I just think being suspended for one game, for walking only a couple of feet from his own bench, is pretty lame and kind of extreme. It was probably a natural reaction, and I am sure he had no intention of entering the fracas.

I know a rule is a rule and the same rule screwed over the Suns in the playoffs, but it is time for fans to face the facts. That rule is dumb! This is the time for all of us to take a stand and support the players. What if that happened in front of the Blazer’s bench?

This is my online petition to put an end to that stupid rule by showing our support of LaMar Odom. He is being suspended for basically doing nothing. This is our time to take a stand.

If you want to take a stand in support of LaMar Odom please leave a comment below. I will consider ANY COMMENT below as a SHOW OF SUPPORT for LaMar Odom. To show solidarity with you, I will add your name to my signature for the rest of the season:

. I will consider ANY COMMENT below as a SHOW OF SUPPORT for LaMar Odom.

I like the attitude, and I’m not just kidding. It’s a good way to get under the skin of people by setting the rules for the debate.

Also, I agree that the rule is stupid. When the spurs attacked nash and used that rule to suspend the suns players, in the same game duncan and bowen left the bench during an altercation following a dunk, however the NBA ruled it wasn’t a large enough altercation to count.

Since then, I have had absolutely zero faith in David Stern and believe the single greatest day in the history of the league will not be the day wilt scored 100, the day the blazers one a championship, or the day that jordan returned for 3 more championships. It will be the day David Stern’s fat [insert several things that can not be posted on this family friendly site] is kicked out of the league.

I have a question about what was the time when Odom walked a couple of feet into the court from his own bench.

It´s the most important thing to consider from my point of view, because the game was scheduled 7PM WT and I waked up at 4AM Spain time, only to realize that the game had started at 3AM and I´d missed almost half the game. This situation has been repeated on Wednesday. After a whole season without any problem now I´m checking out games time using time conversors and find no answers, either time zones I´m getting are wrong or the schedule is wrong. The whole World is wrong and I´m getting mad. 9 hours from Madrid time zone to Portland time zone make 7PM, or 19:00, into 4AM, or 4:00. The same problem using ET time. Can someone reply to this post posting the time he´s posting at and the time zone he´s posting from? I´ve been posterized by my self.

The answer to your question is that the US enters "summer time" / daylight saving time about two weeks before Europe

In the EU DST is from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October, while in most of the US and Canada it’s from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November.

So right now, the east coast is just 5 hours behind Old Europe instead of 6 and Portland 8 instead of 9. The US has caught up on Europe a bit. Until Europe takes the lead again and pulls away for good kinda like the Blazers against the L-team.

P.S.: I’m using TimeScroller which informs me interactively and graphically of times around the globe for every city I want. Macs and iPhones rule. http://www.timescroller.com
P.P.S.: Down with daylight saving time. It’s an anachronism even if it was coordinated globally so Spanish basketball fans don’t miss quarters of important NBA games.

As to Tom's post: I suppose several incidents have led to why the NBA handles leaving the bench so harsh now

Pistons vs. Pacers: http://video.aol.com/video-detail/malace-at-the-palace/2103962665
Miller vs. Shaq: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwJoI0YEGI4
Van Gundy clinging to Mourning’s leg : http://www.usatoday.com/sports/gallery/mourning/contenttemplate5.htm
Etc. http://www.fannation.com/si_blogs/for_the_record/posts/23423

Stern’s nightmare after the palace brawl was probably to see monthly NHL-style “empty the bench” fights:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6QDY9V40ds
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MP7Jaexn1rs

At times, it hurts the occasional wrong player who really didn’t do much. Phoenix fans have especially painful memories about that (Amare, Diaw, later also Nash). But the rule is the rule and every player is instructed about it. Leave the bench when you are not in the game, and you get suspended. It sometimes might be against common sense, but where do you draw the line?

Oh, and you are pretty much on Bill Simmons side at least at the time of the Phoenix incident.

It is a dumb rule

Only guys who come off the bench to get involved in a fracas should be punished, and punished hard. Succumbing to instinct and taking a few steps towards the action is a whole lot different then actually getting physically involved.

You don't need recs when the truth is obvious

by bow4meow on Mar 12, 2009 7:48 AM PDT reply actions

Yup

What if Odom would have reached out and grabbed one of his teammates out of the fight? He still would have been suspended for trying to stop a fight five feet in front of him. I want a fight to end up on a team bench and then have the team just kick the snot out of a guy. Afterward their defense can be that they never left the bench.

1. I have this coworker who sits across the office. He has been printing out about 50 pages of something. That is okay by me, what bothers me is that he gets up after each page to get it out of the printer and he walks behind me to get to the printer. Each time he does, it makes my monitors shake.

2. Another coworker is a swell person but has a really irritating tendency. We will both be checking our e-mail and I’ll say, “So and so’s e-mail is ridiculous.” She’ll say, “What one?” And I’ll say, “The one he sent to all of us 10 minutes ago.” Then instead of just clicking her e-mail, she’ll walk over to my desk to read it on my monitor. I hate that.

wasn't the rule made following Rudy vs. Kermit?

I know that was how Stern justified in in the Suns v. Spurs game

Did RudyT get hit because he left the bench, because he ran into a fight situations, or because Kermit was bursting from the seams with testosterone and muscles?

and what does any of that have to do with Odom? at least the L*kers still helped us by keeping houston down

Rudy T was running somewhere

Kermit had his back to Kareem and Rudy was running somewhere, Kermit thought it was to attack Kareem. So Rudy ran full tilt into Kermit’s best punch. Kind of the worst scenario you can think of, short of driving your car into a bridge abutment. – Elgin

Like this awesome way to chart albums of famous bands. I don’t completely agree with all of Josh Tyrangiel’s ratings (e.g. I like Automatic for the People a bit better), but just the idea to include that in the review of their latest albums as a service to people who haven’t followed every release was nice.

I have Sessions lust

Look at this comparison of his age-22 season to Devin Harris’ age 22 season.

The best I can describe, he has the ability to finish of Jerryd and the passing of Sergio… This is actually a realistic guy to get, as Milwaukee doesn’t have money under the cap to sign him.

Sure, he isn’t the best point guard, but he’s a realistic target.

by Cablinasian on Mar 12, 2009 12:01 PM PDT reply actions

His ball-screen action is close to Chris Paul

I like him a lot, especially if we could switch him for Sergio. On the other hand, Milwaukee seems to want to keep him. But they can’t keep Sessions, Jefferson and Villanueva. And if you look up Villanueva, he has very good PER ratings among PFs right now. He could be really available.

Does anyone from our Spanish readership know if that was Rudy's first hard crash after a dunk?

Either due to a foul or some collision. From his highlight clips, he seemed to always be pretty aggressive attacking the rim in the ACB yet also under control. He usually looks down after a dunk to not land on someone’s foot and seems to have great balance. Did he ever fall to the floor hard? Do you think he will continue to go for the big dunks and oops as if nothing happened once his injury is over?

by Norsktroll on Mar 12, 2009 1:54 PM PDT reply actions

At least not from landing on his back

Usually when you get the air knocked out of you it is from a gut punch, When it happens through your rib cage it is even worse. I had a similar accident (maybe a little worse, but a story for another drawer), and it took six weeks to heal. I couldn’t cough or laugh without my body seizing up. Not fun

I remember at least a collision during 2006/2007 ACB playoffs, playing against Real Madrid. DKV Joventut was defeating Real Madrid in those series, thanks to Rudy, when Felipe Reyes move his body into Rudy´s trajectory while dunking, injuring Rudy. This year also against the Bulls Nocioni made a risky attempt to block Rudy´s lay-up.

What if this did happen in front of the Blazer bench, I mean Oden has these really big feet, and what if he just stood straight up and his big toes landed on the court, and then he’s suspended for "Big Toe Infringement", I just don’t think that’s fair.

They showed that from two different angles, the one doesn’t look so bad (but still an obvious call), the other Roy goes up and defies physics – He turns a 90 degree corner in the air. How do you do that someone asks, because you got body slammed while in the air. Roy looked just like a queue ball bouncing on the break.
