Dallas Loss - Postgame Discussion Thread
Well, that game sucked really bad at first, then it looked like it was going to not suck, and then it sucked after all. For whatever reason, the Mavs seem to have the Blazers' number.
Definitely one of the biggest losses of the year, and a missed opportunity to all but lock up a top seven playoff spot. That being said, losses happen, and the 12-1 over the past 13 home games ain't too shabby.
The frustrating thing was that SO MANY TIMES the Blazers were right there and just needed ONE big shot to get over the hump. Every time, that shot rattled out (or, in Sergio's case, careened towards the bottom of the backboard), and the Mavs responded by sinking back to back buckets and pushing the lead back up to seven or so. Blake had two wide wide wide open threes to tie, and both of them seemed to scrape the bottom of the net and somehow pop back out.
On the bright side, Lamarcus's game was one of the best he's played this year, no question. His dunk on Dampier (and I mean ON DAMPIER) was one of the best in the league all year. His 15 for 21 (or whatever) line was ridiculous. He played phenomenal D on Dirk down the stretch.
My question is this. Brandon was obviously sick. LMA was playing out of his mind. How in the world do the Blazers go the entire stretch run without getting him the rock inside 22 feet? Somehow. Anyhow. Figure it out. Make it happen.
Another thing - as Dirk was lighting up the Blazers in the first half, and Mike and Mike were commenting that the Blazers don't match up well with him, I kept thinking, if only the Blazers had one of the most athletic 6'11" guys in the league, capable of keeping up with Dirk on the perimeter AND shutting him down on the block. Oh, wait, they do. Loved the D down the stretch, but why were other guys guarding Dirk at certain points of the game? And why was Dirk allowed to catch the ball inside 20 feet anytime he wanted it all through the first half? Makes no sense to me.
Another point, and then I'll shut up: zone offense, or the lack thereof. The Blazers looked about as adept at attacking the zone as my city rec league team looks. And that's not very adept. There was either (a) no real plan, or (b) a plan that was an epic failure in execution. Smart money's on (b). I saw guys trying to pick the corner to open up a three a few times, but generally, everybody was clueless. It shouldn't be this hard.
All in all, the loss is no big deal, but the win would've been sweet. Hopefully Roy gets healthy, Rudy comes back, and LMA keeps playing like he's playing. If so, things are looking very good.

Things are getting really tight in the playoffs standings now

Good that Phoenix seems to be out and other teams have harder remaining schedules
by Norsktroll on Mar 11, 2009 10:26 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I predicted a 6th place finish at beginning of year.
I"m sticking with it. We end up ahead of Dallas and Utah but behind Denver/NO/Houston. Likely first round matchup is the Nuggets, whose overtake Houston with their easy closing schedule.
How did you guys win that?
"We scored enough points. We scored 107, they scored 105.

Was at the game
way up close (thanks company tickets!).
First half effort was lackidasical, especially on defense. HATED the Sergio/Steve backcourt (get well Rudy!) 2nd half defense was much much better. LA was fantastic all night on both ends, but as usual, we completely forget he’s on our team in the 4th quarter.
In the end tonight our defense stepped up and gave us plenty of opportunity to win, but our offense failed us repeatedly. 2 minutes to go, down 2, here’s our next 3 possessions:
defensive stop then:
1) Roy fadeaway 17 footer over Dirk that ends up short (7-9 on shot clock)
defensive stop then:
2) Travis fadeway 12 footer over dirk that ends up short (10-11 on shot clock)
Outlaw steal, mugged no call, then:
3) Blake bad pass turnover
Dirk nails 22 footer with LMA all over him to push the lead to 4. Play after the timeout is:
4) Channing Frye 3 point attempt.
That pretty much says it all, other than the 2nd quarter obviously.
How did you guys win that?
"We scored enough points. We scored 107, they scored 105.

I thought the Sergio/Bayless backcourt was worse than the Sergio/Blake backcourt
At least Blake can hit a 3 occasionally and stretch out the defense a little. With Sergio and Bayless the Blazers just couldn’t do anything against Dallas’ zone defense.

Completely agree
That’s the next thing I would’ve written, had I kept going – bad, bad shots down the stretch. With all the heroics this year, it’s hard to blame Brandon for anything, but when you’re not feeling good and LMA’s playing lights out, get him the rock! Travis hit a couple big shots but also took 3-4 pretty bad ones (long twos with too much time left on the shot clock) down the stetch. Blake, two points game, YOU CANNOT THORW THAT PASS. Still can’t believe that one. Channing has been mentally scarred and now thinks he HAS to shoot every time he’s got three feet of separation, for the good of his mental state.
And yeah, that Blake Sergio backcourt has got to go. I’d rather see Shav at the two. I might be serious.
Q: Is Greg favoring his knee?
Frye: He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors.

Blake/Sergio backcourt had a + this game.
Blake/Bayless backcourt had a -
Sergio/Bayless backcourt had a -
I’d rather have Sergio/Rudy backcourt though.

This game came down to defensive intensity
In the second half we played solid high energy defense and we won the 3rd and 4th quarters. In the first half the Blazers didn’t come out with a defensive mindset and allowed the Mavs to get the shots they wanted. If we had played d like we did in the second half we would win that game. Same thing has happened numerous times this year, but we have usually been able to overcome early defensive lapses.

You would think we could figure out Zone Ds, They have been shown to us many times this year
Down the stretch blake passed up a couple open 3 point shots then we settled for long contested 2 point shots.
Brandon was sick.
we did not go to lma enough
If travis isnt bumped or falls after his steal we have a good chance to win this game.
Rudy might have helped busting the Zone.
Greg would have been able to get us some more boards and mabey get dampier into foul trouble. We missed him cause when joel went out we lacked on rebounds.

I don't buy the idea that Dallas has our number
They beat us 3 straight times. That’s not enough to draw conclusions, especially since we beat them twice last year when we were clearly the inferior team.
This was a bad loss, plain and simple. With Dallas on a back-2-back and our home record, I figured we had at least a 75% chance to win this one. This really needed to be a win, and this loss vastly increases our chances at a first round matchup starting at Staples.
This was a huge, huge game, and the Blazers blew it.

I know it's generally bad to play the majority of the games of a series away,
but does LA maintain a real home court advantage during the playoffs? I don’t really expect the Blazers to win a series without home court, but couldn’t theoretically LA be the better team to face when the home court is kind of a neutral court.
This is all theoretical and probably completely wrong, but last year, LA’s “home crowd” consists of celebrities trying to be seen at a professional basketball game. There’s not gonna be the energy there that would normally boost a home team and demoralize a young away team. LA is still a good enough team to squash us, but I might be more worried about trying to play at SA or Utah where they can get a lot of energy from their fans.

Based on us getting blown out there twice,
the vast gulf in playoff experience between us, and the fact that they’re still going to be trying to prove themselves after last year, I’d say JK is right. Manu’s status is still a little up in the air with his ankle, so even though we’d be a huge dog in that series, I’d still take them over LA. Especially because we’d have to deal with L*ker trolls talking about eliminating us again if we lost.

If we blow them out next time, and then put up a good fight against whoever we play in the playoffs, this might actually be a good situation in the future.

most of those were against a completely different roster
do you really think games against them during the 21 and 32 win seasons have any bearing on this season? please.

OMG YES!!!
Seriously though, people do blow these things out of control. Our 7 game home win streak vs the Lakers? Awesome yes, but except for maybe some mentality issues, largely useless. The team that beat the Lakers 3 years ago has how many of the same players as our team today?

The Blazers failed to execute Dave's "keys to the game" to contain Terry who ended with 24, which is above his season avg.

hesitation...
i believe is what killed the blazers in the end. i lost count of the number of times in the 4th quarter that they had an open 3 against the zone and just didn’t take it. then at the end of said possession with 3 on the clock someone tossed up a contested fade away.
the irony is that the blazers shot the 3 ball well tonite. they just didn’t do it enough. when outlaw hit the 3 with about 3 minutes to go my friend next to me turned and said ‘hallelujah’. i don’t think they took another until there were about 6 seconds left.
shoot the 3 blakey. you hit it 43% of the time. do the math… it’s a good shot.
by colinmarsh on Mar 11, 2009 10:37 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Yeah what the crap?
Why did Blake pass that open 3 up for the lead just to give Outlaw a baseline 16 footer for the tie? They’re like the same percentage shot, but one is for 3 points.
by Zaig on Mar 11, 2009 10:47 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
it wasn't the only one
i wish it were but both roy and blake passed on open 3 pointers then tossed to outlaw with the shotclock running down. i just didn’t understand what we were doing in the 4th quarter, the blazers are normally very aggressive shooting the 3 late. go figure…

This was a game where they should have taken more open jumpers.

We need Rudy
None of our PGs can play together, at least not judging by tonight. We need Roy and Rudy both healthy. Next year we could possibly play Martell as a big 2 and have Batum at 3, switching them on defense if needed. But we definitely need 2 of those 3 healthy to have a good back court. Webster is out for the year, which means Rudy and Roy NEED to both be healthy at the end of the season.
I still don’t think Bayless is the answer. I’m giving Sergio one more summer to become more consistent on his shot. If there isn’t noticeable improvement, he’s not the answer either.

I don't blame people for being upset at Blake
Blake did something he shouldn’t have done. Try to be a playmaker. He usually plays within his skill set and doesn’t do more than he is capable of. Unfortunately, he made the poor decision to be a playmaker on a fast break. Two things he does not do well even in non-pressure situations.
The cake is a lie. Do not bake it.

Blake...
…had a rough game. Let’s not forget that he kept us in it in the first quarter, though. 3-4 from the arc, I believe.
For whatever reason, we do not matchup well with the Mavs. I don’t think we can draw a whole lot of conclusions about our players from this game.
Sh*t happens.

not just blake...
seriously i did mention blake in my first post but roy, outlaw and blake all had open 3 looks in the 4th that they refused to take. one of outlaw’s open looks turned into a made two so it’s hard to be too critical but the fact is the open 3 is a great shot, particularly with the guys we have on this team.
it was weird we didn’t shoot it more because normally the willingness to take it is not an issue. it was just really really odd.

Atleast LMA made the top ten plays of the night and he was #1
And Oden, once again, is a rookie, so non-stop fast break basketball is like fast-forwarding a song while he's trying to learn the lyrics.

i think the disappointment
comes from the fact that this loss is evidence that we’re not there yet.
After the LA game, a lot of people got excited about the Blazers proving they’re a top level team. A win tonight would have confirmed it, but a loss just reminds everyone that we’re not there yet. i’m alright with that, but a win would have been great, obviously.

This loss was really frustrating for me for 3 ( main ) reasons.
We won every quarter but the second. We lost the game in that second quarter. The whole game felt like we were just ready to boil. Ready to explode. Just one blocked shot, one breakaway dunk, one big 3 pointer away from the roof coming off the RG and the team feeding off that energy and running away with the game. But that big momentum swing never came. It was close, but it never happened.
We really played pretty good defense tonight ( when we didn’t get confused by the excellent Dallas ball movement and consequential switches as a result ). We were closing out on shooters pretty well, protecting the paint, and forcing contested jumpshots. Those damned jump shots just kept falling! Over and over they fell. This is what it must have felt like to lose to the blazers last year when we lived and died by the jumper. I’m going to have nightmares about Dirk’s ugly ass, contested, off balance, fade away jumper falling time and time again. This would have been a different game if he wasn’t so on.
We had it! We had this game in the bag. I honestly wasn’t worried at the half. I thought to myself, " we played really poorly in the first half. We’re gonna turn it on in the second." We did turn it on. We outplayed, outscored, and out defended them in the second half. We went on our run to close the gap to 3 points with 8 minutes to go in the game. Then we fell completely flat. We couldn’t buy a bucket. Contested jumper after contested jumper. There was a 4 minute scoring drought.
Ugh. This one hurts.

Why did we get rid of Batum in the third quarter
And we didn’t see him until there were 5 seconds left in the game. I mean, didn’t he help lead us back from the brink again? We can afford to leave Travis out until the fourth quarter if Nicolas is cooking. Anyway, everyone knows that Travis is much better in the fourth.

He hurt it in a fashion similar to how Wade hurt his shoulder
He went for a steal on Dirk, Dirk moved the ball and it pulled Batum’s arm back too far.
It looked real painful on replays and Batum seemed to be hurting. I’d like to know what Joel came over and said to him.
Even while in pain, Batum completed a steal and attempted to run a fast break. I like that guy.

Blazers were undermanned...
Oden hurt, which means Frye gets minutes, and that’s NEVER a good idea. Brandon was pretty clearly sick. Rex was sick. Sergio seems to have a severe case of vertigo that makes it impossible to shoot the ball. Rudy was out. Blake had a hurt shooting hand.
They kept it close and were in the game into the last minute. What more could you want, given that set of unfortunates?
Don’t sweat this one too much. Just gotta make sure to take care of biz with the Nets. THAT one there is no excuse to lose… Lots of excuses for this one.
