Update on Rudy from Sergio

http://www.marca.com/2009/03/10/baloncesto/nba/1236673930.html

Published in the spanish press 3 hours after the game

Translated and edited:

Sergio, from the hospital: "Rudy got scared because he couldn't breathe well, but he's fine"

"I was shocked, you don't know how to react" - Rudy is asleep and he hurts on his side and neck - He's expected to be out tomorrow

"It was a weird moment. It was a blowout, we were all playing well... In some way you could imagine that Ariza was going to hit him because they had turned it over a few times in a row... He tried to hit him, but not to hurt him. I even think that Ariza reacts violently after that because he's scared about what he's done". A few meters away from Rose Garden, from the hospital, Sergio Rodriguez answers Marca.com- Rudy Fernández is already sleeping and Sergio, with some of Rudy's friend are still there.

"I was shocked. You just don't know how to react", says Sergio, whose first instinct was to get on the court, but was stopped by Monty Williams, he stops him and he has to stay on the bench. "I don't know what I would've done if they let me go", he confesses, and the fact is that in that moment there were two focuses: Rudy on the floor and the skirmish that was going on.

"There's a big show until he's taken out, he's on the floor, you can't get close... That makes it look worse than it is".

Teammates prayers
In that chaos, Sergio and Rudy's teammates started praying. In that moment you could see Sergio was visibly affected, looking where his friend was. "It's been strange. Everybody was praying and I was looking the other way". (Note: People in Spain aren't so religious and no one prays in public)

Just a scary moment
Luckily, the hospital is really close to the Rose Garden and Rudy could stay calm. "He was scared because he couldn't breathe well, but it's nothing. He hurts on his side and neck. He'll spend tonight in the hospital, but he's expected to leave tomorrow", he calms the fans, the same way he's done all night with Rudy's family.

People in Spain aren't religious?

They have their share of atheists and agnostics, like the rest of Europe, but Spain is like 99% catholic.

that's what i thought.

"There are a few teams you have to watch out for in the fourth quarter."
"Yeah, but Portland definitely is not one of them."

-New Orleans Hornets broadcasters at the end of the third quarter with the Hornets leading 74-59. Portland later ends up winning 97-89.

"They don't mind him shooting that shot at all. Rudy Fernandez is not that great of a 3pt shooter."

-New Orleans Hornets broadcasters right after a Rudy Fernandez missed 3pter. Rudy Fernandez finished the game with three 3pters on six attempts.

he’s saying they don’t do things like have a group prayer for an injured player

I'm not 'religious'

I have a relationship with Christ, and I won’t bring it up or push it on anyone, that is not an effective way of spreading the gospel, but this is a basketball blog, so lets just talk ball :)

Same here.

Frankly, I have no idea why it is offensive to people that others who have faith express it. Pushing your views on someone isn’t a good way of pursuading anyone of anything, but the last time I checked athiests don’t get bent out of shape when you act with compassion for others around you. They just get mad when you do it in Jesus name. The principles are fine, just don’t acknowledge their foundation. lol

European Catholics

for the most part, means you got christened when you were a baby. And that’s it.

Not that there aren’t a lot of committed, devout Catholics in Europe, because there are. But the percentage is very, very low. The overwhelming majority in Europe never attend church and are not really religious at all.

And those who are wouldn’t do public prayer in a group like that. You’ll see that with Americans, or among those who attend independent churches (Pentecostal, Brethren, Baptist, etc) in Europe, but not among Catholics, Presbyterians, or Anglicans. The exception would be the few charismatic churches among those groups, but most charismatics are independent.

This message has been brought to you by the international foundation for religious understanding. Or something.

According to CIS (Center of Sociology Investigations from Spain)

79.1% of spanish people have religious beliefs, but of those people, just 15.8% usually go to church.

That makes somw 12.5% of the spanish population.

A little more in-depth

Adjusting to Sergio’s age group, there’s just a 4.26% chance of him being a religious guy.

Pretty much the same for most of Europe

Poland is different, of course. Percentages would be much higher there.

my exwife is from avignon, the beautiful walled city in provence

and is technically catholic, but i found — at least among well-educated french — a great hostility to the church. one of the things they profess to be appalled by in america is the phenomenon of “right-wing fundamentalists,” as of course these are almost always portrayed as villainous buffoons in hollywood movies. just so, the mere idea of the state of texas causes her to shudder and recoil, a common reaction in the european intelligentsia which goes beyond anything rational, goes in fact well beyond any species of “thought.”

Yes, please tread lightly

I’m not going to start bashing all the secular movements and their eventual philosophical outcomes, which would be extraordinarily easy. If you don’t like religion, why is that the only publically acceptable comment on religion?

Anyone else notice Pau Gasol's reaction?

He was absolutely horrified. He spent the whole time standing a few feet away just watching Rudy. Also Phil never even considering putting him back in the game after that. It’s interesting to me how close all the Spanish players are. It doesn’t seem as though the players from other countries (outside the US) have that kind of connection.

by TPfor3 on Mar 10, 2009 10:08 AM PDT reply actions

Did Gasol never return to the game?

That’s interesting—I hadn’t noticed that. He must have been very shaken up.

I had a hard time watching the rest of the game myself. I could see that Rudy was struggling to breathe, and that’s scary to watch. At the time, I was thinking cracked ribs at the least. But I suspect Rudy’s problem going forward will be some whiplash and a deep bruise in his hip area. He really landed hard, and those type of deep bruises can be slow to heal—although I don’t know about the hip area in particular.

Hopefully, we’ll get more info from the Blazers soon about Rudy’s condition. And hopefully the timeline for his return will be half-way realistic for once.

Agreed
It’s interesting to me how close all the Spanish players are. It doesn’t seem as though the players from other countries (outside the US) have that kind of connection.

My theory is a lot of it has to do with their youth/national team system. Most of the elite US guys vaguely know each other from AAU tourneys/all start camps, but in Europe some of those national teams have been together in some form since middle school. They literally grow up together

I believe in Greg Oden. To all the haters - get down with the program or stay off the wagon for all time. #52

He looked totally shocked.

If he hadn’t been anxiously waiting for Rudy to get up, I wouldn’t have been surprised if he would have gone after Ariza himself. I’m sure there wasn’t an exchange of pleasantries after the game between those two.

i was horrified. the hit to the head was bad, and the way he landed, i was worried he’d bust a rib. but more than anything my heart sank when the trainer came over and we caught a glimpse of them stroking his face. they do that to check if he can feel it. meaning this could have been bad. real bad. we got real lucky that this wasn’t worse than it is

I was not overly impressed with the way they treated him immediately

Doc Roberts might be a great orthopedic surgeon, but if Rudy really had a spinal injury the way they put the collar and board under him wouldn’t have helped.

yeah they were a bit awkward with that...if there was a serious spinal injury they could have potentially aggravated it

I was surprised how long it took for anyone to get out there to him

and was also wondering why someone from the medical team didn’t look at the replay a coulple of times because the mechanism of injury would have quickly ruled out C/Spine problems…I thought he might have damaged the shoulder of the outstretched arm he fell on – - or cracked the top ribs/collapsed that lung…but he bounced very nicely – -

I hope he learned not to flail around to accentuate a foul – - it puts the body in an awkward position to land..seems like alot of European players throw around their arms and legs when there is contact in order to make sure it is noticed – - or maybe he was trying to continue to extend his body to finish the shot…whatever…but there is a “right” way to fall – - think exactly the opposite of his completely open position..
