Flagrant foul and player is injured
I think the NBA shoud think about changing the way it handles players who commit flagrant fouls that result in an injury to another player. Right now it usally results with a fine and a 1-2 game suspension and thats it. The injured player could be out for 3 months and his team and him have to deal with that while the one who caused it misses only a couple of games. I think if a player commits a flagrant foul and it results in an injury to another player he shoud not be allowed to play again untill the player he injured is able to play . After the injured players first game back the player who commited the foul can serve his 1-2 game suspension and return. I know the guy (in this case Ariza) is going to say he was making a play on the ball, and maybe he was it does not matter if its called a FLAGRANT foul and results in injury to the player this is what happens. This seems like the only way to handle these things in a semi fair way. Afterall its not right that the player who got hurt through no fault of his own shoud miss games while the one who caused it continues to play. Im sure most of the time nobody is trying to injure anyone but those are the breaks, in the end the one who gets hurt still gets the worst of it. Anyway for now we will have to live with the stupid slap on the wrist 1-2 game suspension and the game goes on,it sucks!!

Here's the thing...how is a guy supposed to play basketball knowing that other guys on the court are playing football??
If you want this league to be a football/basketball hybrid…fine. Then give the guys some protection. But if not, if you’re going to insist that they wear shorts and t shirts…then you better make sure everyone on the court is playing basketball.
Fact is that Ariza, and everyone else who takes cheap shots when given the opportunity – and make no mistake that was a cheap shot – should be suspended at least games. AT LEAST. You’d see a heck of a lot less of these incidents. And let’s face it, eventually somebody is going to get SERIOUSLY hurt if you allow football on the basketball court.

typos for the loss. by protection i meant padding...and suspended at least 10 games

Come on now.
Ten games would be ridiculous. He deserves a two game suspension max.

I'm gonna defend Ariza here, knowing full well that Bedgers are armed with bricks, 2x4s, and nooses.
It was a hard foul… an irresponsibly hard foul.
That said, I do not believe for a minute that Ariza was attempting to injure Rudy. I think his reaction shows how surprised he was at LMA and Roy’s anger. He should be suspended, but for a game, and not any longer, unless you are going to suspend his specifically for his behavior in the post foul altercation.
It was a tough foul with a bad result, but Ariza does not need to have the book thrown at him.
I heart taxes.
I think most people can see this if they put emotions aside.
Ariza made a split second mistake and deserves to be punished in a rational manner. I still hope the Blazers make a run at him next summer. ( Although I would prefer Josh Childress)

Find 2 quarters, buy an Oregonian, look at the photo of the play, take a deep breath, and relax....
Going for the ball, fouled him on the follow-through… Fast, athletic play — hard foul — unfortunate result.
Remember, Rudy is about 4 pounds lighter than Sophia, it doesn’t take much to spin him like a football…

Why would you look at a photo?
You keep saying this and it makes no sense. If I knee a guy in the groin while he goes up for the shot, but then I block him, are you going to say to look at a picture of me getting the block?
The biggest problem with your suggestion
is that it gives teams an incentive to claim that a player is “injured” to perpetuate another team’s player’s suspension. For example, if it had been Kobe that committed that foul on Rudy and we were neck and neck for the conference lead with the L*kers, it would behoove us to keep Rudy out for as long as possible.
I dunno about your idea.
I noticed though that after the Ariza foul and after a cheap shot Tyson Chandler took on Przy earlier in the season the Blazers did not respond well. It got me thinking. Is laying down a cheap shot beneficial to the team that delivers the blow. Sure they give up a couple of free throws but they mess with the oppositions mind and in the two cases above the opposing team actually used the hard foul/cheap shot as a rallying point. Good thing the Blazers had a big enough lead last night. I was thinking though that the NBA should consider a power play like Hockey. The Lakers should of had to play wiith 4 men for 2 minutes after the shot to take away their emotional edge. I dunno maybe I am wrong what do you think?
Win the game.
That’s all that matters.

I agree with your take that it is a strategy used by teams that are getting blown out
to get back into the game. I think it worked to some extent and then the Blazers kind of got their equilibrium back and resumed the blowout. I think there is a lot to Roy’s comment after the game, that this is a typical Lxker strategy, if they fall behind you can expect the hard fouls. – Elgin

like Dwight Jaynes says on his blog today...
… the deed is the deed— the results should not determine the punishment.
I don't have any problem with the deed (hard foul, Flagrant 1) being upgraded based on the result (Flagrant 2).
………………….. Here’s why: kicking Ariza out was needed to preserve order in the game. And a play like that SHOULD be reviewed by the league office.
And here’s what they will find: he was NOT headhunting and will NOT be suspended.

I think he will be suspended.
Maybe one or two games. It wasn’t dirty just dumb.

He wasn't
And Timbo he wasn’t headhunting as in “I’m going to take the next guy I can out of this game.”
Instead it was a fast break and Ariza decided “He is not making this shot no matter what I do.” Ariza knew he had no chance of actually stopping the shot. If he wanted to do that he could have just grabbed Rudy’s arms. He took the free opportunity of a fast break to swing all out at Rudy. If he got a block cool, if not, whatever.
He was this close to stopping that shot... Give him some credit for HUSTLING and NOT GIVING UP...

Pontiff of the Pryz for Prez Posse...
..................... Both Batum and Ariza have made the same basic play this year, coming from behind to stop the break with a block...

Head Hunting or not
You have to take the foul in context. I believe he was going for the ball but he was also going in hard to try and foul to stop the easy bucket. I understand the no easy buckets idea, I’ve played ball my whole life but down by 30 in the 3rd??? You just don’t nail someone flying through the air like that especially in that situation. Atleast try to wrap him up or something. The fly-by swipe always ends up bad but when your down by that much its really uncalled for. BOTTOM LINE..

This is a radical idea but it is one that I support. – Elgin
