Who made Brandon into a whiner?
the refs.
I don't understand it, but for some reason, NBA refs love to get screamed at, berated and generally insulted. You know how I know this? Because I look at their response to players who do this on a regular basis. Brandon tried to be nice, he tried to never say anything to the refs, and where did it get him? no respect. swallowed whistles. You could argue that he still isn't getting the famous "all star treatment" but its a heck of a lot better than it used to be.
I'm sure plenty of you have also noticed that Brandon has also started to let out a loud yell or HEYYYYYY! whenever he takes it to the hole or feels contact. my girlfriend was asking me about this the other day and I explained it by relating it to Pavlov's Bell. Pavlov would ring a bell whenever he would bring out food for a dog which would then begin to drool. the dog would associate the ringing of the bell with food and soon enough, the ringing of the bell alone would be enough to invoke drooling (yes, thats way simplified but look it up if you want the full story). Brandon yells when he's fouled, the refs blow the whistle. Brandon yells (even when he's not fouled), the refs blow the whistle. yes, refs can be trained like dogs.
ok, now that I think about it, whiner is a bit strong but I couldn't come up with another word that describes an NBA player who complains to the refs after "missed" calls. personally, brandon's new antics towards the refs don't really bother me...unless his man is streaking down the court while he's doing it. but I've read some comments questioning why he does this and so I thought I'd address it. but before you judge, here are a few examples of whiners. now ask yourself how refs respond to these guys...
the san antonio spurs: the premier whiners of the league, and it starts at the top with coach pop. my god those guys complain. timmy does the buggy eyes, manu does the euro "hands to the sky" thing that you'll recognize when rudy does it. tony parker actually puts his arm around the refs' waists sometimes and even bruce bowen gets in on the act, like he didn't INTENTIONALLY just knee that guy in the balls...true story.
kobe freaking bryant: a co worker of mine brought this up the other day. its like, kobe is essentially the most dangerous offensive threat in the league right now. he can score from anywhere, in any way at any time. theres not a move he hasn't perfected, his shooting form is flawless and theres almost no single defender that can stop him on his own. so really, of every player in the league that needs any help from the refs, kobe needs it the least. yet he's treated as a god. but whats even crazier than all of that is, he's a total dick to the refs! if a questionable call goes your way against kobe and he complains loud and long enough, you better believe he's gettin the next call. don't try to fight it. you can't complain louder than he can.
bottom line is, the refs generally don't reward good behavior with preferential treatment. however, they DO reward bad behavior with preferential treatment. I don't blame brandon for figuring this out in his 3rd year.

true to an extent
there is a line here and we know a player who is well beyond that line. His name is Rasheed Wallace and he literally treats the refs like garbage and does not get calls. Quite the opposite in fact, he gets technicals.
persistence is the key

there is a difference in whining and and swearing at refs.
Sheed always says stupid stuff to refs, but someone like Kobe might just whine.
And Oden, once again, is a rookie, so non-stop fast break basketball is like fast-forwarding a song while he's trying to learn the lyrics.

I'm with you on the pavlovian reaction
but, it seems to me Roy was starting to get superstar calls until he spoke out in public about it. That stretch of five games that culminated with the 52 point game he was getting to the line times a game on average. But, within a week of mentioning that it was great to get calls like Kobe, Wade, and Lebron the calls seemed to disappear.
For example, last game he only ended up with 6fts on a 32 point scoring night and if I recall correctly they all came in the second half. That’s just crazy… the last 5 games he has averaged 3.8 attempts or 4.6 attempts per game over the last 10.
Perhaps the “whining” is from the frustration of tasting the superstar calls for 5 games then being dropped back into the rules of the game. The difference statistically between the 52 point night and last night was two made baskets and a differential of 15 fts… 14-27 fg, 5-7 3P, 19-21 ft compared to 12-27 fg, 3-4 3P, 5-6 ft (oh, I know numbers are not the whole as well as I know that it was a very different Roy out there against OKC compared to that Suns game)
I guess my point is I don’t think the whining is working… it seems like you are right that the yell has pulled in a few calls, but I just don’t see that many

oops... left out a number
he was getting to the line 13 times a game during that five game scoring streak.

You're
absolutely right. I think and am hoping that once his “punishment” is over they will give him the calls again. If he gets calls like he did against PHX again he will score 40 quite often.

refs dont listen to the yelps
i dont remember where i read it (maybe Truehoop?) but he talked to a ref about the exact thing that Brandon does and said that it hardly ever plays into factor whether they blow the whistle or not. Refs are constantly audibly berated by players, fans, and coaches, i am sure it is second nature to tone them all out.
all they need is visual evidence to call a foul, hearing bodies crash probably wont do much ( except for loud slaps)

It is Brandon's job as floor captain
The refs often don’t know when they are calling a lopsided game, or what calls they are missing. The floor captain needs to let them know which guys on the other team are throwing elbows, holding, bumping on screens, pushing on rebounds, etc. He just needs to run by a couple of them and say, “Watch Shaq he’s throwing elbows.” That way the next time he throws one, we will get the call. He also needs to remind them when they are calling ticky tack fouls on us, but not on the other team, that they need to call both ends of the court even – that is his job as captain. I am glad he is stepping up to start doing it. What he can’t do is let the other team fast break by while he is doing it.
He and Joel also need to step up and get on the other players who are not playing D.

Don't I recall...
… the Drexler-led Blazers and Addelman crying an awful lot about fouls?
… and Sabonis whenever he played Shaq?
I don’t like the crying. It’s one of the very few things about Roy’s game I don’t like and it seems to me he’s pretty much done it ever since he got into the league.

I think Brandon complains
much more when the team is down and he is frustrated. He does complain about missed calls much more now then he used to, but the HEY thing he yells he has done for at least since last season. He should never stop doing this. But every time he lags getting back because he has turned to the official to complain, I just hang my head. As long as we dont get beat back and scored on as a result, I guess Im ok with it, because it WILL get him a call or two later on, and every point is gonna count.

Squeaky wheel gets the grease!
Until the squeaky wheel becomes annoying. Keep it up though, whatever helps the team, as long as it is helping. Its what the league has become – especially the elite teams. The refs are human and know that they miss alot of calls, and screw up plenty that they do make. You always see them making a terrible call on one end of the floor, realizing it, and making another iffy one on the other to even things up.

It does get annoying
I dont like it. But I understand it. He is just doing what all the superstars do to him when he guards them. And it gets them calls so why not.
But at the same time, it hurts him, its showing the refs up and he is getting less calls then he did at the end of last season i think
