OK, that probably shouldn't happen.

They just wanted a team to root for. Any team. That it happened to come at the expense of Seattle fans is a shame, but not their fault. You guys are great fans, and I’m sure they will live up to that name.

by BlazersOrBust on Feb 6, 2009 4:53 PM PST up reply actions

yeah he's good

but I don’t really see him getting rotation minutes. maybe he takes them from travis, but with Westbrook and Durant getting lots of burn, Nate’s not gonna yank minutes from a 6th-year guy (even one as spacey as Trav) to give them to Green.

by BlazersOrBust on Feb 6, 2009 4:56 PM PST up reply actions

he takes them from Batum and Travis...

The Blazers are an Inevitable Machine. There offense is so efficient that they play themselves back into a lot of games that don’t look especially close.

Obviously, a game like this, the D needs to step it up, but also know that the “Thunder” will come back to earth.

Oklahoma City is a good home team lately (as good or better than Charlotte). They run the break well, and that’s our weakness.

What we needed to do was use our inside advantage and slow the game down. Hasn’t happened.

Its all about lack of discipline

You are playing a team that is good at running. You know you have a size advantage inside. You know you struggle (an understatement) with transition D.

I am quite confident Nate told the team to go inside— Nate is not the best coach in the NBA, but he’s not stupid. This is about lack of execution and discipline and it starts with Brandon Roy. He needs to be a better leader and insure the ball goes inside. He needs to get his teammates to stop taing dumb shots.

I mean, we can bitch about the jmp shots but this team looks absolutely lost on defense. Totally lost. They don’t what they’re doing. Don’t know if they should switch, stay, fight, sag, run stop, foul, or whatever. They have no clue. Something has broken down terribly in the defensive scheme.

Nate basically plays rec league defense. He tells his players to play straight and the players are afraid of helping. So they don’t learn how to rotate at all or help on dribble penetration. Nate doesn’t have a scheme on defense.

You follow a team that inspires you and on more than one night they don’t show up and you wonder why.

@Dave – Stop ridiculing bad teams. They do win games and obviously are beating us pretty bad. Ugh….

by dpnim on Feb 6, 2009 6:15 PM PST reply actions

No excuse for Nate

Nate can’t coach defense. His defense schemes have more holes than Swiss cheese. You can’t blame the players for letting teams shoot around 60% for the past two games. The three games in this road game have been atrocious on the defense end. He has the horses to build a good defensive team. But he is not doing this by any measure.

Not to mention, he has been mishandling Oden’s development. By switching like 80% of the time, he gets Oden into foul trouble much too often and shatters his confidence.

by Balian on Feb 6, 2009 6:17 PM PST reply actions

Who knows

You can’t do much right now. You can’t fire Nate in mid-season. I guess I am just voicing my frustration. I hate seeing a 6’3" guard guarding a power forward or Oden chasing a speedy point guard EVERY SINGLE TIME.

don't bother to interrupt them with logic

Nate haters decry evidence for Nate and don’t look at the mitigating factors against Nate. Look, if he was the problem, I’d be the first to be up calling for his head. We play 4 rookies and three 3rd year players in the rotation. We need experience, not a new coach.

No playoffs for this team

Never say “never”, but this team can NOT play defense. I don’t know why when all I hear is that Nate and the staff hammer it into them day after day. But any team that can penetrate at all just destroys the Blazers. The worst part for me is that the Blazers don’t do the same thing to the other team. How often does a Blazer drive and finish or drive and dish? It’s always an iso: back the guy down and either settle for some lame jumper or dish it outside for a long, low-percentage shot. As bad a first half as I’ve seen in years.

No way

They suck tonight. And the recents wins are nothing but fool’s gold.

we'll make the playoffs

but we’ll be bounced in no time with this type of defense.

Play like crap some games too. That’s why they’re behind us.

look at it this way

if we score 60, and hold em to 40.. then OVERTIME!

"There is one way that cutting off trade with a partner could help you," Wolfers explains. "And that's if you're an idiot. If you used to trade a lot with one partner, and they always got the better of you because you don't know what you're doing, then you're right, you would be better off not trading with them any more."

Frankly I wish we had drafted Durant instead of Oden

And frankly I will always wish that. Durant is a much more valuable baller. Only a Blazers homer would deny that.

Oden is at 50-60% athleticism

and Durant didn’t look that great his rookie year.

At the time

I think Portland had a greater need for muscle than a 6’9" dude who weighs about 50 lbs soaking wet.

Can any of you say "defense"?

You can??? Good! Because that’s as close as you’re gonna get to seeing any tonight.

Talking about this game with a friend, I predicted a monstrous ex-Sonics win.

Because of how tough they were last year against the Blazers. And how motivated Durant would be in his first matchup against Oden. And the fact that the Blazers can’t deal with quick teams like this.

I hope I end up being proved wrong somehow. And if I’m not, I’ll take no pleasure from being right.

They are scoring, but not playing any defense.
