Save our Sonics

this is an e-mail i got from save our sonics. i still feel as a basketball fan and a sports fan in the pacific northwest seattle was robbed of its team and things did not happen fairly or justly. im a huge blazer fan but i dont see why the sonics dont deserve our support.

i say we support the sonics with at the game on the 11th. i will have a huge sign showing my disgust towards the way stern handled this.

Hey. I really really sympathize with the Sonics fans, but...

I would still wear my regular Blazer colors to games….it’s the Blazers…they are playing…we are fighting for home court advantage…

Also, I would think at some point the “protest” has to end….it’s a done deal.

It's pretty simple,

Wear a green or yellow long sleeved shirt under a Blazer jersey or t-shirt.

Mission accomplished.

On a similar note, when does a jersey really look good with anything. I still wear mine to the game, but that doesn’t make it a good fashion choice.

Save your Sonics?

First off, when did we ever give a crap about the Sonics? The most respect I can give the Sonics, is to spell their name with a capital S. If the Sonics fans had supported their team, they would have had a better chance of still being in Seattle.
I grew up in Washington, and kind of followed the Sonics in the early 70’s. I moved to Portland on new years eve of 1973. The Sonics had no chance.
If you are looking for support for a Sonics resurgence, you are looking in the wrong place. You will probably get an expansion franchise at some point.
If you are lucky, you will get a established team to relocate. Either way you will suck for years to come. Portland will dominate you.
If you have any hope of being competative, you will pack your bags and move south! Adopt the Portlanf Trailblazers as your team and enjoy the ride.

Hate to be the contrarian but...

I sympathize with the Sonics fans but I don’t think it was Stern or even Clay Bennett’s fault. I followed the situation pretty closely and if you take the emotion out of it and just use logic it’s really the fault of the people of Seattle, specifically the people that didn’t feel that strongly about the Sonics.

Because why did the Sonics move? Because Seattle wouldn’t pony up the dough for a new arena, which is why Howard Schultz sold the team. Now I’m not saying this practice of asking for public money to build arenas for sports teams is right but it’s the reality, it’s the cost of having a professional sports team.

So if Seattle doesn’t build them an new arena (because Key Arena is the worst in terms of leas in the NBA) and Oklahoma has a better arena, then I don’t fault them for moving to Oklahoma City and OKC for taking it. There is nothing dirty or illegal or immoral about this. And yes I would feel exactly this way even if it was the Blazers.

The Gov of Washington Gregoire, rejected a last minute offer by Ballmer and investors to renovate Key Arena. So basically the politicians decided it wasn’t worth the cost to the taxpayer to keep the Sonics in Seattle. So blame the politicans right? Well you can, but why do politicians do anything? To stay in office, if they thought that the Sonics leaving would kill any chance of re-election they would’ve used public money to build a new arena in an instant, the fact that they didn’t shows that Save our Sonics while a dedicated bunch were soley in the minority of Seattle and Washington. It didn’t create a huge uproar and surely enough Gregoire got re-elected despite being the Gov who lost the Sonics.

So if I was a Sonics fan I would be mad at the people who didn’t care enough about the Sonics to picket or sign petitions or vote against the politicians who didn’t do enough to keep the Sonics in Seattle.

I wouldn’t blame Clay Bennett, because even if his plan all along was to move the team to OKC, Seattle never called his bluff, if they had taken Ballmer’s offer to renovate Key Arena or build a new arena and THEN he still insisted on moving to OKC then I would blame Clay Bennett. Everbody points out how Seattle is a big market, it doesn’t matter how big the market is if you have a horrible arena deal like Key Arena, so he made the capitalistic choice and went to OKC.

I guess my point condensed is that it’s easy to blame everything on Stern or demonize Bennett, but nobody seems to point out, this is not the people of Seattle were robbed of a team, it’s more a dedicated minority were robbed of a team because the majority really didn’t care enough to prevent the team from leaving. Blame that majority of Seattlelites.

Ok I know I wrote a whole lot but I’m going to finish with this, I think some of the attacks on Oklahoma City have seen on the internet (not here specifically) have ranged from crude to disgusting. I don’t think the city or the fans have done anything wrong, I think the attacks have been uncalled for, especially remarks about the bombing, and speaking of which, when a city has been through something that terrible I give them a f***ing break and be happy they can be known for something other than a horrific bombing.

by aryamehr on Feb 4, 2009 4:10 AM PST up reply actions

It's easy to say that as long as it's not your team.

Attendance at the Key was great until they blew up the team. After that, let’s just say that it looked more like when Patterson and Nash blew up our team.

Portland didn’t have to pay for a new arena, Paul Allen built the Rose Garden with his own money. When attendance was way down during the rebuilding a few years ago, and no one cared about the team, you think Portlanders would have payed for a new arena? If you do, you’re kidding yourself.

The Blazers were very close to being sold. It’s possible they could have been moved.

To all the comments on this fanpost that rip the Sonics, your inability to empathize with what happened to the Sonics says a lot about your character.

Where were you as a Blazer fan during the bad years? You weren’t here…

by Blazerholic on Feb 4, 2009 7:03 AM PST up reply actions   1 recs

Exactly

I’m stunned by the lack of empathy that some Blazer fans have considering how close our team came to experiencing the same fate. I also think that blame for the Sonics leaving sits directly with David Stern. Everyone involved in the situation (Schultz, Bennett, government, fans) acted as you would expect them to act given the situation that was presented to them, but one of Stern’s primary jobs is to protect the integrity of the league. The man ignored that responsibility in favor of helping out a close personal friend (Fun Fact: Stern introduced Bennett at Bennett’s induction into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame, and this was before Bennett ever announced his intentions of moving the team).

Lastly, I think the eight paragraph comment above is more of a recitation of David Stern’s talking points than a result of following the situation closely. Almost every point laid out in those eight paragraphs has an easy and logical rebuttal that has been presented multiple times over the last two years.

This was exactly my point.

It matters not whether you had a certain distaste for the Sonics or even the city of Seattle. This is a statement to all pro sports franchises everywhere. Fans don’t like it when you move cities. Especially when you rip the team out of the arms of the beloved fanbase. The Sonics were in the playoffs just 3 4 years ago and now they don’t exist. Their attendance numbers during the last few years were every bit as low as Portland’s. My whole point is this could have been us. In a message of solidarity let us boo the Oklahoma City Franchise Stealers and strive for a world record of longest boo. Besides If Seattle never gets a team again I hope they might remember our generosity and join forces with us. 14th largest tv market + the 23 largest tv market = lots of money for the Blazers. I think that Portland should get an NHL team and then we can have Seattle cheer for our indoor sports and we will cheer for their outdoor sports. How many Portlanders already cheer for the Seahawks and Mariners.

I'll be there, and I'll be wearing some U of O gear under my Rudy jersey

I’ve changed my position on the matter. At first, I was in the “screw ’em” camp in regards to Seattle, because, honestly, they have two other major league teams, and I’ve been fans of them my entire life. They can get by with the Mariners and Seahawks. Even more screw ’em because the Sounders got an MLS franchise and not the Timbers.

However, I came to a realization. Screw Oklahoma. They whine about everything. They feel like they’re justified in having an NBA team, even as they steal it from one of the great American cities. The callousness of the OKC fanbase is what changed my mind.

by robrun2 on Feb 4, 2009 9:20 AM PST reply actions   1 recs

Okay what is the purpose of wearing green?

To show support for Kevin Durant and them? Or to show the dissatisfaction with how Stern allowed a storied franchise to be ripped out by its roots?

I can understand two, I don’t want to see one.

The SOS crowd is going to be cheering for Durant and that crew… in our arena… while some of us apparently are going to be wearing the same colors as them… That, I don’t like.

While I think it is horrible that Seattle lost its team, and while I wish that it hadn’t happened. I do not think that wearing the colors of the opposing team (albeit their old colors) sends the correct message. The message that it sends is we still love the team no matter where they are, and that is not the case. We have never loved their team, we loved beating them, and vice versa. If Sonics fans want to come down the I-5 to support their old team, I have nothing to say to them, but I do not want our fans to show solidarity. I don’t know the best way to show respect, but what I do want is to beat the living tar out of them.

We loved the I5 rivalry, for the same reason everyone loves a rivalry, because you hate the opposing team. Because of the home crowd ready for blood. And because silence is golden only in an away arena.

So I will not be wearing Green, it disrespects my team, and it disrespects the rivalry, I will instead be rooting as hard for the Blazers as I possibly can, that is the only way I know to honor the death of one of the best rivalries in the NBA.

I live in Seattle and I know what the sentiment is like here

There is nothing but absolute disdain for Clay Bennett, OKC, and the entire Thunder organization. The Thunder are not the Sonics, nor will they ever be again for Sonic fans. There are plenty of NBA fans in Seattle. They will drive down to the game, let the league know Sonic fans still exist, and bring attention to their displeasure at the way David Stern handled the situation. And they will cheer the Blazers to completely demolish the Thunder.

Sonic fans do not hate the players, but they hate the Thunder and what it represents. Just take a look at Sonicscentral or BenditlikeBennett.

I know that if Clay Bennett had bought the Blazers and the whole OKC scenario had played out here, the ex-Blazers would be DEAD to me. DEAD. Like Fredo was to Michael Corleone. I’d be wanting to take them out for a final boat ride.

Are they not coming down here to protest Sonics fans getting screwed? Why would they cheer for the organization that backstabbed them so egregiously?

by Badalona Baddie on Feb 4, 2009 1:33 PM PST up reply actions

Re: Badalona CC: blzrfan

Not the Thunder fans that I have been talking to (most of which currently live in Portland). They still love Kevin Durant, and have been following the progress of the team and Westbrook. I still get in arguments about KD vs. GO, and get told how Seattle made the correct pick.

Sonic fans do not hate the players

And I feel confident that they will cheer for them. With it being a game against a subpar team, I think tickets are going to be easy to get, and if Kevin Durant does a single cool thing, then they are going to cheer for him. If they get the lead, these fans will cheer for the players that they loved less than a year ago.

Why would they cheer for the organization that backstabbed them so egregiously?

Why would they drive three hours to see them? The fans that are driving down have definitely had a different reaction than you would. If they were “dead to you” then you wouldn’t care what they did. Why would even waster gas driving down much less buy a ticket?

I don't think you understand the negative emotion and disgust the Thunder generates here in Seattle

I lived and breathed through the entire Sonics ordeal. Durant fans are far and few here. He played one lame duck season in Seattle, and the players that the city truly embraced were traded, Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis. The only connection to the Thunder team is thievery not its players.

There are lots of loyal NBA fanatics in Seattle. They are willing to drive down and wear Sonic colors to show support for another NBA team in Seattle or at least honor the heritage of the Sonics in a living memorial. There is no other game that would be more appropriate than the Thunder game.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
