Open Chat Thread with Dave

My dear wife is having a girls-only party in my living room which means I am free (or, depending on your definition, stuck) for the next hour or two.  So it seems like a good time for  an open chat thread.  I'll be here to discuss playoff prospects, player performances, blogging, or anything else that comes to our collective minds.  All of you folks who are up semi-late on a Friday night but aren't out and about join in!  I anticipate the crowd will be a little lighter than usual so this is your chance to get more in-depth chatting done should you wish!

But you know, people seem so darn HAPPY about this “first” thing that I don’t have the heart to stomp on it. I just know not to click on a post until there are four or more comments because the first three are “first!” and “first!!” and then under that one “oh darn you beat me to it!”

This video game forum that I frequent outright bans posts like these.

Guess what, know one misses them. It’s completely childish.

Dave,

Do you think our jump-shooting oriented offense is a good thing or a bad thing, and is it more a result of our coaching staff or our player roster?

I love you bro, but this = fanshot.

by This Post Should Have Been A Fanshot on Feb 27, 2009 10:06 PM PST reply actions

It is a good thing

when Greg plays well, a bad thing otherwise. This whole offense is planned around a complete team and we don’t have one right now. The hole shows. It’s both the coaching staff and the player roster.

You have to hit jumpers to free up the middle but I wish the Blazers would concentrate on both sides of the equation more often. Shooting the jumpers first is easier though and these players too often take the easy way out. Hopefully experience and getting thumped in the playoffs will cure them of that.

Followup to that

What do you think the reason is the players go away from Oden so quickly? Jealous was mentioned, disappointed with the big mans moves, personal glory?
Second thought. I am no coach thankfully, but why in His name do we not play LMA at the high post and Greg on the block. I think we are like 20/20 when we do that

Oden

hasn’t proved himself yet. No gifts in this league, especially on the offensive end. He has to earn that offensive respect in the eyes of his teammates and that takes time. He has to show confidence, desire, meanness, and score that ball. He’s light years better than he was at the beginning of the season. It’ll come.

Is that kind of like setting up the pass with the run in football?

Should the Blazers set up the jumpshot with the inside game or set up the inside game with the jumpshot?

If the Blazers can dump it into Oden and be nearly guaranteed two points

ala Lakers Shaq, then they should do that all game long. If/when Oden gets double teamed he can kick it out for the wide open shot.

I think the biggest problem now is that Portland often shoots a lot of contested jumpshots.

Hurrakane, don't know if you saw it but...

I put up a fanpost last night that provides the ability to use an ignore function inside BE. I just noticed it went to the rec’d list, which is a cool surprise.

It requires Firefox and the Greasemonkey extension, in case that’s a limitation.

I asked the SBN guys about adding an ignore list a few days ago, and it sounded like they know users would like it, but there was no sign of a timeline.

Whoa, good catch.

Not sure why. I didn’t write the script, but I’ll read through it to see if there’s an obvious reason. Well, I’ll try. My javascript stinks.

by Timmay! on Feb 27, 2009 11:17 PM PST up reply actions

Ok, tracked it down raoul.

Looks like canishoopus came into being after the SBN portion of the killfile script was written, so it wasn’t listed as an SBN site. If you’re really in the mood to add it, here’s how.

Search your hard drive for “killfile.user.js”. Depending on your OS, it’ll be somewhere in your mozilla user folder. On my machine (Vista), it’s under C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\[random].default\gm_scripts\killfile\

(If you don’t find it, you may need to make hidden files visible)

Open it in wordpad (not notepad, it’s useless for this because it doesn’t do line breaks right). Search for “globalfutbol”. It’ll be on a line with two other site names. Right after globalfutbol, hit space, type canishoopus and leave the end-quote in place after that. The line should look like:

“arrowheadpride milehighreport globalfutbol canishoopus”).split("

Hit ctrl-S to save the file, then close and reopen Firefox. Canishoopus now has the block options.

Worked for me at least…

by Timmay! on Feb 27, 2009 11:36 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, I know. This is the first time I'd tried that. Not particularly user-friendly to add SBN sites.

I think it would just be a matter of adding all the newer SBN sites in one swoop though. Maybe I’ll send a note to the author and see if he’ll update the script..

Why do you think Nate insists on playing Channing over Shavlik while Oden is hurt? I may be old fashioned, but I like to see a PF get rebounds and hustle.

even in the clippers games, he bobbles the ball and isn’t a huge upgrade in the rebounding or defense department.

Channing is more valuable for his shot which spaces the floor, I would think.

Pretty much

Also Channing has more experience. Nate is big on playing guys who are more used to playing and more used to playing with each other. That’s a big deal on a team as young as this. You can’t just throw five guys out there and have them mesh like a bunch of veterans would. New people equals more confusion, more missed assignments, and more turnovers. But in short minutes I like Shav’s game more than Channing’s. In long minutes I suspect I might like Channing’s more. You have to plan for longer minutes I suppose, especially when you’re talking early in the game.

So, Mike Rice tonight said

that good teams – playoff teams – do two things: they win at home and they beat sub-.500 teams. And his contention is that the Blazers have done both this year.

I would agree that it’s nice to see the Blazers do the things that ‘they should do’. You should be able to win home games. You should be able to beat sub-.500 teams. But I’m concerned for the Blazers this year, even though they’ve done both. If/when they make it to the playoffs, there won’t be any more sub-.500 teams. And to win a playoff series, you pretty much need to be able to win on the road.

Am I missing something? Is Rice onto something that is going above my head? I’m not complaining about what the Blazers have been able to do this year – they’re clearly an improved team over last year. But, IMO, until they start winning on the road, especially against other playoff teams, they haven’t reached it yet.

by Storyteller on Feb 27, 2009 10:11 PM PST reply actions

I think he is on the money for how to get into the playoffs

beat the teams worse than you and defend your court. thats not a recipe for Playoff success, just getting to the playoffs.

Not really

It’s a comment about what teams that have to worry about making the playoffs do. The L*kers and Spurs do it but it’s so self-evident they take it for granted.

That is not my speciality

and I have always freely admitted that. I study the draft like crazy after the season. I have gotten pretty close on the types of picks that we’ve made, including nailing the desire for Roy and Aldridge the year we got them. But really others are much better at that aspect of analysis than I am.

Is it our system or our players that cause us to be a jump shooting team?

I hate to compare to some of the L@ker games I’v watched but when their opponents double team Kobe or Gasol, it’s one pass rotation then attack the hoop. Our Blazers on the other hand, is 2-3 passes on the perimeter to a 3 point shot.

So I guess I’m not sure it’s our system or our players that lead to some of the jump shooting first mentality of this team.

Portland is an athletic team, but

outside of Roy and maybe Bayless isn’t an aggressive team. LMA is a fairly big dude, but is content to shoot fadeaways. Outlaw can jump over the backboard, but would rather bomb away from three point land. Blake and Sergio aren’t able to get to the hole much either and only Roy demands a double team. That means Portland has to work it around the perimeter to finally find the open dude.

Ok

What is the reason that so many of our role players (Travis, Sergio, Bayless, etc.) have diehard fanbases, that go around trumpeting the merits of their player, while LMA has almost no fan club?

I know there is LaMarvelous… But for our second best player, there is almost little to no fanfare. He has weaknesses, namely falling into too much jump shooting and forgetting to go inside, but Travis and Sergio have weakness as well.

Why don’t Blazer fans embrace LaMMMarcus?

I know this is for dave

but i honestly think people like to root for the underdog.. so thats where trav and sergio come into play. If someone hates them someone needs to love them. Bayless is POTENTIAL POTENTIAL POTENTIAL.

In my opinion LMA has never really come out of his shell for the fans. Roy was forced to and it made a MAJOR difference in his fan appeal. Once LaMarcus starts opening up to the fans more I think he will get a bigger fanbase.

I love what LMA brings to our team…but for some reason his “steady” play doesn’t get me as amped up as a James Jones/Rudy 3, Brandon’s crossover and finishes at the rim, and Trout’s clutch plays. LMA does have the occasional spurts however. LMA reminds me of Duncan in the sense that I respect both of their games, but they are both so calm and collected that I can’t share in with their emotion.

He does the the crowd rowdy with his dunks

but this is also a new thing. My #1 most hated thing about LMA coming into this year was his tendency to try and lay it up at the rim. I dont know bout you but if I was 6’11" with hops, i would try and dunk EVERYTHING. Plus he never went up strong with those layups. Since he has added some toughness (keep calling him soft people its working) he has really gotten me out of my seat a few times.

Agreed

He has shown at random times a ton of emotion with some rim rocking dunks, but he is usually just pretty calm. I guess it has been said that he is very introverted, so that would explain it. I think what makes Bayless so appealing to fans…he is pretty much emotionless for most of the game and then in an instant…he is just AMPED up. You can feel the energy that he exudes.

I honestly don't know

Personality? Maybe he fulfills too much of his potential so his play isn’t a mystery? I think a big part of it is that he’s a power forward but not in the Lucas/Williams/Natt mode. Maybe he reminds people too much of Rasheed. Blazer fans like blue collar PF’s that are unsung heroes.

Dave - you and I talked about Bayless in July

We both expressed our fears about what he could and could not become. The whole idea of ‘can he truly become a PG or will he just be another Ben Gordon-type.’

Just wondering if you still have those fears.

I’ve seen a bit more of traditional PG skills from Bayless than we saw in Summer League (for obvious reasons) but I’m still not sold on him as the PG of the future next to Roy.

by Storyteller on Feb 27, 2009 10:17 PM PST reply actions

Postscript

Bayless is still young and still has lots of room to grow and develop.

It’s just that some continue to proclaim him the future PG and I’m not completely sold on that yet. I want to be, but I’m not.

by Storyteller on Feb 27, 2009 10:21 PM PST up reply actions

He is growing

That’s what I want to see for now. As long as that continues I think he has a chance.

And by the way, somebody above asked what my favorite thing is about this site. Part of it would be having guys like Storyteller—guys who really know their stuff—commenting here. That makes me feel like we’ve done something good.

by Dave on Feb 27, 2009 10:24 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, I agree completely

Storyteller with his contract page (which I access a LOT) and jscot with his daily sched updates is really awesome. Awesome stuff.

As for Bayless, I would say just look at tonight’s game as a sample of what he can do. Granted, it was the T-Wolves, but he was driving and dishing with laser accuracy.

I think he has a good chance to be more of a guy like Chauncy Billups. Billups started his career out kinda’ slowly, and more as a scorer, but then the Pistons picked him up and he really flourished as a passer, rather than the scoring mentality he had had for most of his career.

Bayless has a mentality as a scorer right now, but I think there will be a point, whether with this team or another, where he will become a Billups-with-the-Pistons type guy.

Want more aggressiveness? Try less Baylesslessness.

Chad Ford's article

Hey Dave,

Earlier today, I posted a 2007 article by Chad Ford that he wrote about a Greg Oden workout prior to the draft. I don’t know if you read it, but if you did, do you think we’ll ever see the Oden that Ford (and presumably Blazers brass and others) saw in workouts leading up to the draft? Or was that an illusion?

by BigBlazer on Feb 27, 2009 10:18 PM PST reply actions

I'm not Dave

but I will say that microfracture takes a long time to recover from. He will absolutely regain athleticism by next year. Will he be the dominant athletic freak he was at Ohio State? Maybe not. He’ll still be much quicker than he is now.

by Cablinasian on Feb 27, 2009 10:20 PM PST up reply actions

My call on Oden

hasn’t changed since Day One. He’ll be a great rebounder and a game-changing defender. His size, strength, and athleticism (even after the surgery) will allow him to have spectacular moments. He will be a force to be reckoned with. But he’s not likely to ever be Shaq or Tim Duncan in terms of overall stats or fame.

Sleeper Game Changer

For some reason my gut says Nic is the type of guy that is cold blooded, smart, quick, and long-armed enough to be a game changer in a playoff game. I like when he is shooting – in control jumpers or aggressive rim attack – gives me confidence. Would have been a great John Wooden baller. No doubt the other GMs wanted him; great no-trade. Granted, the rookie eggs get laid, but is 16-19 Nate’s limit this year? Sure wish he would give Nic more run when he’s on.

by Dave on Feb 27, 2009 10:27 PM PST up reply actions

I think people are missing an obvious comparison

James Worthy
A L*ker, yes, but he was the 3rd option on a great team.
He played sneaky defense, utilizing quickness and length.
He could hit a 3, but only enough to keep the D honest.
He was at his best in the open court, finishing with ease with just a slight crease to work with.
He was SMOOOOOOTH, when he ran, when he walked, when he ordered Moons over My Hammy at Denny’s…
But most of all, people just forgot about him there on the weak side. And then he would explode all over you for 30+. And with Magic and Kareem (and Byron and Cooper lining up 3s) you couldn’t send anyone to help on James.

by TheThinWhiteDuke on Feb 28, 2009 11:09 AM PST up reply actions

One thing I cannot figure out about Nate is he is supposed to be such a defensive minded coach, but he fails to get through. I have also noticed he is more concerned with subbing players for how they play on

the offensive side rather than repeatedly making defensive blunders, failing to box out and hustle plays. He seems to rarely take those players out and talk to them in a teaching moment capacity.

by FlyinSouth on Feb 27, 2009 10:21 PM PST reply actions

Right now he has to be

because his stable of defenders is thin and he has to win anyway. He does play Przy a bunch. And Batum is starting.

I don’t know that Nate has ever had a defensive team that I’d want to depend on. I’m thinking he needs a couple more seasons with this group before we know for sure.

Ridnour

Allen, Radmanovic….yeesh.

I don’t think I could come up with any defensive scheme that makes that team work. That’s pretty near a toxic combo.

One thing I think people underestimate is how hard it is to defend when both of your guards are poor defenders. All of the big men get hung out to dry and everybody is forever running to try and compensate. Minnesota is having this exact trouble right now.

Ohh I read abotu that somewhere

aha! found it. Per John Canzano:

First, though, you must know about Roy and the tunnel.

Because there are few private moments in Roy’s life anymore. He is a father of two young children. He is the best player on one of the league’s best young teams. And while he says he plays because he loves basketball, there are people pulling at him constantly — for autographs, for quotes, for appearances — which is why he secretly enjoyed when Greg Oden arrived a year ago, pulling some of the media temporarily to the other side of the locker room.

We’re back to Roy now, most nights.

Roy’s locker is on the corner in the Blazers locker room, nearest the showers. It’s prized real estate that belonged to Zach Randolph before him, and Rasheed Wallace before that. And the locker beside his is empty, thank goodness, because the dozen or so media members crowded around his space after games spill into it.

Ruben Boumtje Boumtje had that empty locker a few years ago, and he became an expert in quietly dressing and gathering his things while television cameramen mostly stood on his shoe tops.

So yeah. Roy retreats to the tunnel before games. He bows his head. He listens to the anthem. And Roy said: “I say a little prayer and have a little time to myself.” And maybe that doesn’t strike you as a team leader thinking team, and being part of a team, but his teammates don’t mind.

He’s always there for his team when the lights go up, isn’t he?

Watching games last year he seemed to really direct the players ( especially Travis ) to their defensive spots or defensive sets. James Jones was a HUGE asset

but—now don’t laugh—Travis is actually taking on half of James Jones’ role. Travis is now being that three point shooter in the corner, and with Joel Przy back in the second unit, he is able to shout out the places people should be on defense. James was valuable because he was the ONLY one with a clue on the second unit defensively last year.

I'm not perceiving LMA as a very willing passer

When he receives a ball down low, he usually takes the shot no matter how contested. He also often receives the pass with another player cutting along the baseline. Then he fakes a handoff like a quarterback, but I can’t remember to have ever seen him actually hand the ball for a dunk or layup to the cutter.

did it tonight, but he is so far down on the block the handoff doesnt work well

a simple hedge forces the driver out of bounds. I think LMA enjoyed passing from the highpost. Not from his low block other than a double. I am pretty sure he feels he can take anyone 1 on 1 that is guarding him

Maybe it’s a mental image that is selectively reinforced whenever I think “man, he should have passed that”. He also needs to work on beating slower players off the dribble. That’s one noticeable thing Bosh has a clear advantage over him.

I think we have to

get Lamarcus and Greg both comfortable with their roles in the offense first. But that’s going to be a staple of our system in the future. One thing to remember is that the vertical pass down the lane is a tricky one though. It’s closer to a backdoor cut-type occasional play than a pick and roll staple.

Sloan would be interesting

I love his eye for detail. There’s a reason the Utah pick and roll is feared. Those picks are set in the right place and time and the guards use them right. Pop can probably never coach for another team again because he’s gotten too used to the Spurs. Phil Jackson has never been tested with a team like this and I think he’s too far along in his career to bother. I’m not sure I’d like Van Gundy after the Houston thing. I think I’d like Adelman in a couple years better. I don’t know enough about Jordan to comment fairly.

I don't care who is setting the pick

but I see too many of them not set squarely and I see too many of the guards dribble so wide of them that their defender simply waltzes past as if the big man wasn’t there. You have to rub your guy off of a pick to make it work. Plus the timing of the dribble and the release are often wrong. Practice…practice…technique…technique. Sloan is a stickler for that.

there is an incredible gap between the two. He is a better shooter, twice the rebounder, a better passer, about an equal defender, and nearly injury proof so far.

For the first time since his freshman season, Hansbrough is no longer in our top 30. He hasn’t been able to bounce back from an early injury and his rebounding numbers are the worst of his college career. Said one NBA executive, “What can I do with an undersized power forward who isn’t athletic and doesn’t rebound?”

That feeling is shared by many NBA executives who feel Hansbrough will have, at best, a Mark Madsen-type impact in the league. It’s still not out of the question that he goes late in the first round, but all of the talk about him being a late-lottery to mid-first-round pick is over.

I moved to Portland in 1976 and have been a rabid Blazer fan ever since. Blazers Edge is by far my favorite blog because fans talk real basketball here without the usual banal vitriol against anyone who hold a different view or loyalty. It is much like talking face to face. Some of the things I’ve read in other blogs would cause a fight even in church. In my view the term “Pritch slapped” is in this category. It is insulting and derogatory in my opinion and also, quite boastful in a poor sportsman kind of a way. Houston's been one of the best defensive teams in the league over the past several years, and they can't get out of round 1

I’ve never been one to buy into the D>O theory. To be great, you have to have both, but I don’t think one is more important than the other.

Boomshakalaka

by jksnake99 on Feb 27, 2009 11:06 PM PST up reply actions

Exactly

You have to have both. Portland doesn’t. Our rebounding masks a lot of deficiencies right now but in a 7-game series with only one team to prepare for and veterans coming against us those deficiencies are going to get exposed.

by Dave on Feb 27, 2009 11:08 PM PST up reply actions

I guess-- our D is certainly keeping us from being contenders

I still think we’ll do better than people expect. Even without homecourt I’d give us a ~35-40% chance against NO, Dallas, Denver, etc.

I agree. It's like the points-for versus points-against spread

only in this case it’s the total of the your-offense versus their-offense and your-defense versus their-defense spread.

by MiledAnimal on Feb 27, 2009 11:09 PM PST up reply actions

eh. I think solid defensive teams are less susceptible to injury. If one of their guys goes out, the can still be solid defensively. If Brandon goes out, our offense is much, much worse.

Anyway, I still think Weaver can be an awesome defensive force in this league. Those successful Cougar teams he led consistently scored in the 50-60 point range. In the right system/for the right coach, he’s going to be a great player.

I finally played it for like a couple hours the other day just to see what the hullabulloo was all about, and, as I suspected, it was the stupidest game I’ve ever played. I was robbed of two hours of my life.

he went up to Seattle

and I have a bunch of friends who go to church up there. He came down and was at our church for a bit this summer… pretty cool guy.

Random that you know who he is. I was just trying to think of someone from Tri Cities.

No...

I have a lot of friends that do, though.

by Cablinasian on Feb 27, 2009 11:39 PM PST up reply actions

Haha I don't think so...not normally

He did tell a funny story though about how one time he was in middle school and he had a pimple on his face…big red one. He was embarassed so he covered it up with makeup and like EVERYONE at school the next day noticed and was like, dude…do you have makeup on???

I think he used it as a sermon illustration to say that if you have hidden sin in your life, you can’t just cover it up. You have to deal with it.

I like Deluge

because I can’t automatically guess how to play it the first time I listen. He really changes up the chord patterns from the traditional 1-5-6-4 and the rhythm has more swing.

I loved the In the Valley by the Sea Hillsong… one of my favorite albums by them.

Also i recommend you guys listening to James Allison online. He is my pastor and he is really really good.

He should wear knee pads from here on out.

This year hasn’t been bad, injury wise. The first one was due to him being clumsy coming back from injury, I think. He didn’t have the reflexes to react to falling yet.
