Greg Oden Support Thread

Does GO really need the support of a bunch of anonymous fans on the internet? Of course not. But I've had enough of the hate directed at this guy. People starting stupid rumors, accusing him of malingering when he could be playing, ragging on his personality, etc. - enough is enough. I am a fan of the Portland Trail Blazers and Greg Oden. This guy is everything we all said we wanted from a player during the Jail Blazer era - smart, funny, a good citizen, and a good player. It's okay to have an opinion - maybe you think Durant should have been the pick, maybe you think GO will never live up to the hype that surrounded him, that's your right. But this is my response to all the haters who seem to take pleasure in every bad thing that happens with this guy. Greg, you're the man, get well, and I can't wait to see you and the Blazers making runs in the playoffs for years to come. Post here if you are on the Official Greg Oden Bandwagon and aren't jumping off for anything short of a Measure 11 crime (that's sarcasm for all the folks who liked the 1080 rumors). War Greg Oden! #52

what does War blank blank mean?

by tevisthe4th on Feb 26, 2009 7:29 PM PST reply actions

Auburn fans end almost every sentence

with “War Eagle”, basically a saying of support for their squad (they’re the tigers, but they let a golden eagle loose before football games). Picked up the saying from the Jim Rome show, but since I support Greg I figured it fit the context.

An admission: After the OKC game, I said some things. Stupid things. Things about Nate not knowing how to coach GO. It was only then I realized that I was in danger of becoming that which I most loathe - an uninformed, knee jerk fan who reacts to wins with wild delusions of championships and losses with trade and firing fodder. I will not be that fan. From this point on I will support the Blazers, the coaches and front office wholeheartedly, offering praise and criticism appropriate to the matter at hand. I will never again be "that guy".

The former is fine by me

Rome is a like him or loathe him deal, I guess his show just works for me. But to the more important subject, go GO!

Actually, at Auburn they are

Tigers, War Eagles and Riflemen (or is it Pioneers, I forget).

It’s like they could never decide what mascot they liked best, so they adopted them all.

(One of my brothers went to Auburn.)

I'm in.

The guy is 21 years old. His job is hard. He’s always been the best just by being the biggest, but now there are big and bigger guys. His learning curve is steep. That’s exhausting. He’s playing a season that is way, way longer than any other season he’s ever played. That’s exhausting. Give the guy a break.

Can we support him

and think he should be allowed to come off the bench? I <3 the guy, but he’s still coming off a year of recovery and deserves to face the second tier competition first. I think the game would be more fun for him if he got to go all chuck norris on the opposing bench.

by lurtsman on Feb 26, 2009 8:04 PM PST reply actions

Yes you can

This is exactly what I was trying to get at – we disagree on Oden’s current role (I think he should be the starter if he’s healthy enough to play) but you’re not acting like a psycho or calling him a bust/bad guy because you don’t think he’s ready yet. That is a fair and rational opinion. My main beef is with the rumor mongers and the people who are bashing this guy for no reason other than he’s not putting up Wilt #s as a rookie.

Noone puts up wilts numbers

Oden’s per 48 are pretty good, and he has alot of potential. At the start of the season I wanted him to be starting. Now I think coming off the bench would help him since he wouldn’t have such seasoned pros going against him. I’d love to see bayless play the second unit with him. They would dominate together. Next year, they might be ready for starting. Otherwise, they will give us the best bench in the league, bar none.

I am down with this thread

and I am down with Greg Oden! I think this has been a hard road for him. Love the point someone made about how long a year seems when a person is younger. I almost forget how hard that year was for him, but I know he worked hard because his knee seems strong. I really liked the list of big man injuries posted by someone, it made me realize that he’s average in the injury department for a guy in his position.
I loved it when a couple weeks ago he started smiling more and being more demonstrative during the games. I really think his time will come. I am so excited for next year, and these three games he has missed seem like forever because I am so excited to see his next game! GO GREG! Just wait till all these hating suckers change their tune when you have a couple great games!

I support this guy a hundred percent and I heard on 1080 the FAN all the crap they were saying about how people are jumping off the bandwagon and losing faith in GO or whatever crap it was, I’m paraphrasing. Fact is, Bigs get hurt in the NBA, that’s just how it goes. I saw Tony Kornheiser knocking Greg on PTI today and it seems like every time anyone mentions GO it is about how he’s injury prone. I believe that GO will be a very important piece of the championship puzzle….as long as our guards figure out how to make an entry pass…..

Now, if they would only . . .

establish him in the post, quit switching on P&R
(isolating him on the perimeter with a quick little slasher)
and drop /alley oop off the high P&R, we’d see him blossom.
In any regard, we’ve all seen the growth/production when he
can stay on the court for 30 minutes.
Point being that we never needed another big scorer, just
strong rebounding, inside offensive power and ability to control
the paint with intimidation. Most NBA big men miss 10 to 12 games

Thank you for posting this. The saddest thing about a player getting hurt is the doubt. Does he care? Is it really that serious? Be a man and give it a go. You know the drill.

Have we seen or heard anything that would cause us to believe than Greg wants anything other than to be on the court? If you offered to trade him a 70% pay cut over his career for the chance to be injury free, do you doubt he’d take it?

Also, only the least introspective among us have a fully developed personality at 21 years old. Expect Greg to try on several skins before he finds the one he’s most comfortable in. All this while knowingly living on The Truman Show.

I hope Greg ignores all criticism and reads this post

Greg Oden does not get more injured than many prominent basketball players, including Brandon Roy. His injuries so far are nothing unusual enough to pay much attention to, and he plays his age on the court, plus enhances the team in ways Durant doesn’t. Pritchard made a good choice getting a talented, young quality center instead of a fabulous wing, which are legion. Durant may be the next Jordan or LeBron, in which case he can come play for us for a max contract in a few years and play with Oden and his buddies.

Snippet from my first post.
An Oden observation for those “Oden is a bust bloggers”.

If Oden takes a pass down low and does a cat like spin move knocking Shaq into the 6th row slamming down a two handed monster dunk, ripping the basket completely off its’ support, falls down and breaks both femurs in two places..Insert ugly 911 details here… He will never be Sam Bowie!!!

Oden missed a full year and feels like he let the team down. The last thing he wants to do is play on an injured knee and do something that might cause him to miss another year.
Frankly, I feel the same way.
Playing on swollen knees, limbs, joints, or whatever, is a precursor to tendonitis or bursitis, etc.

Greg, get healthy – then rock the world.

for the guys

who really don’t think people made him out to be the messiah, then awnser these ?’s honestly

1)-if the blazers would’ve had the 6.th pick and taken y.noah will some of you people still have the same excitement for this team today.

2)-if the blazers would’ve taken al horford with the 3.rd pick would you people today have the same enthusiasm.

3)-if they would’ve traded the pick for let’s say a k.garnett will you people still have the same excitement level.

also read all the threads before the blazers won the lottery in 07 then you honestly tell me if i’m wrong with my oden is made the messiah by many people is not accurate.

by fatty on Feb 27, 2009 8:15 AM PST reply actions

irrelevant?

My excitement about the Blazers stems from:

1) Roy and his all-star status
2) Lamarcus on the cusp of being an all-star
3) The promising futures of Batum, Bayless, and Rudy
4) Oden

I’m not gonna lie, I was a honk twice guy. But that doesn’t mean that I am not pulling for GO, who I think can be a big impact player on this team (obviously). And pulling for him doesn’t mean I think he’s the messiah.

by c'est bon on Feb 27, 2009 8:25 AM PST up reply actions

That's pretty much where I'm at.

I think that Oden is overworshipped and LMA’s VERY CLOSE standing to top tier for his position is undersold…

And I would add Pryzzy to the list at #4, who is a guy who plays HARD and WELL every night in the toughest position in the league.

Which makes Oden #5 — a highly touted, raw rookie who MIGHT become an excellent player at the league’s premium position.

Why is Channing Frye still here? Anybody??? Anybody???

Good points fatty.

Had any of those situations occurred, there would be far less traffic on B.E. today. I remember all those threads right before and after the draft. Totally irrational.

by TwoDeep on Feb 27, 2009 8:29 AM PST up reply actions

Fair questions

1) No. I would have been excited, because I liked Noah and thought he might fit well with Portland. But I didn’t see him having the potential impact of Oden.

2) Maybe. At least by now anyway. I sort of liked Noah over Horford, but ended up liking Al much more in the NBA than Noah.

3) I’m not sure I know which way to read this. Would I have agreed to trading the top pick for Garnett? I’d have to consider it. In fact I remember thinking about the possibility of Portland working a trade for Garnett even before we got the top pick. I don’t know if a KG for Oden (or Durant) deal was even a possibility. In the end, I think I would have stuck with Oden.

Part of the disagreement here might be your application of the term messiah. For me, that was Brandon Roy. Oden was like the icing on the cake, a big man who most thought of as the best big to come into the league in some time and even after accounting for the hype, a guy whose floor seemed to be a solid young and very big center.

I love me some GO

I’ll never turn my back on him. Everyone can talk all the sh!t they want when he goes down again, but I’ll be there…patiently waiting. Over the next couple years we will start to see a different Oden, time is on our side people. Patience.

I think Greg should seriously consider some knee pads like Darius Miles and D wade. Somebody please convince him to do so.

I'm sure he's a nice guy, big dud on the court so far

Maybe he’ll get better, maybe he won’t. 10 and 10 still sounds about right to me. At some point support becomes coddling. Just sayin.

A "big dud"? If you don't see the impact that GO is already having on games, then you don't know basketball

I’m sorry—I try to refrain from putdowns. But that’s just a fact. In those games in which GO has stayed out of foul trouble, he’s been a nightmare for opposing teams. At both ends of the floor, his presence distorts what they wish to do. As for the foul trouble, that’s something every defensive-minded rookie center struggles with.

Re/ the alleged “coddling,” have you ever played basketball with a knee injury? If so, then you know that it isn’t something you should attempt to “play through.” I understand your frustration that GO isn’t dominating on a consistent basis. He’s clearly frustrated too. But the fact is that only a handful of centers have come into the league and dominated immediately. And many centers have struggled with injuries early, only to go on to long & productive careers.

Most Blazer fans realize all this. The rest of them should. Being a “fan” entails a bit of loyalty and patience, folks—not throwing tantrums when you don’t get what you want when you want it.

So?

When Portland finally wins a championship in the next 2-4 years what will the ney sayers say then? Portland will still be a young team with a title and probably be in the finals for several years barring major injury to multiple players. I can see Portland and Cleveland competing for several years against each other in the finals.
Its not even a GO thing its the economics of the nba right now, when times were good there were owners hurting for cash, as this recession kicks in Portland will be in a position to take on talent and put together a dynasty.

I try to help with everything," Fernandez said. "If the coach says go rebound, I go rebound. I work for the team.

""If I'm playing this game to get media and attention, I shouldn't be here," Aldridge said. "I'm here to play basketball, and do what I can do to help this team win."

To say we "should have" drafted KD is a useless statement

loser’s say “coulda, woulda, shoulda” and jerks say, “I told you so”.

Do any of you like hearing, “If you were only more like your brother”? Embrace GO for who he is. Support him and let’s roll with him. He is going to be awesome, in his own right.

We are a vicitim of our own expectations and it appears that he has allowed himself to become a victim of the publics collective expectations. If he feels that he is not longer supported by his fans, with his sensitive disposition he may be prone to “check out” and cover the pain with a " I don’t give a crap" attitude.

I heart you Greg. I heart you………..Big Time.

I'm a little confused by your tactics

Hopefully, GO could care less what a bunch of sports bloggers say about him

But just in case he does: count me in, Greg. I’ve been on the Greg Oden bandwagon from Day One. What sensible Blazer fan wouldn’t be? You’re exactly what this franchise needed but hardly even dreamed of getting: a dominant paint presence to complement Roy, Aldridge, et al. The fact that you’re also unselfish, intelligent, funny, and charismatic is just frosting on the cake.

A few years from now, hardly anyone will even remember that you got off to a rough start with injuries. Hang in there, big guy. This is going to be a lot of fun.

all for Oden

I am not counting him out or even justifying any future of his career that doesn’t consider him the franchise center… and a dominant force the be reckoned with in the future..

I’m not saying that he will be those things.. but I won’t count him out yet.. he still has plenty of time..

Some "fans" want to see Oden fail

I don’t understand calling yourself a Blazer fan on one hand; then being smarmy and happy in the hope that Oden will fail on the other; all so you can be proven right.

I’m disappointed in a lot of things with this team; night in and night out; from the coaching on down to individual players. I yell at the TV and cuss the players and coach out on a regular basis, but there’s not a single player on that team that I don’t want to see succeed.

There are a number of players on the team who I don’t think are going to make it, but I’m not going to revel in the fact that they didn’t. I’ve been right about a lot of things in over 30 years of watching this team, but I’d rather be pleasantly surprised than right every time.

Hey “fans”, why don’t you tell us about how we’ll finally win the championship in 20 years instead of 3, then you can sit back and laugh at all the homers who are actually cheering the team like they should; hoping all those homers are wrong…pathetic.

by Wotan on Feb 27, 2009 5:00 PM PST reply actions

I think this mentality stems from the fact that many local fans have never experienced a championship

As a result of all the futility, they channel their “fandom” into all kinds of negative outlets. At my post re/ GO’s supposed need to “man up,” a guy confessed that while he doesn’t believe GO will lead the Blazers to a championship, he has no doubt that, should GO ever play for ANOTHER team, that team will become a dynasty. I wasn’t a psych major, but I’d say this is low self-esteem projected onto a sports franchise and its players.

Kinda reminds me of Groucho Marx’s old quip that he’d never want to join a club that would take him as a member. GO must be a bust, because if he were the genuine article, how could the Blazers have landed him? GO’s early, transitory struggles with injury and rust only confirm what those fans always believed deep down: that there MUST be something wrong with him or he wouldn’t be a Blazer.

This is the kind of mentality fans fall into when they haven’t experienced success. They attack the very guys who are willing and able to win for them. Ultimately they drive those players right out of town, then they rail at the front office that traded them away. Talk about disfunctional! I don’t know that we’ve gotten to that point here in Portland, but I’m seeing the signs.

Forget hiring more coaches for the Blazers. Maybe Dave needs to bring in a site psychologist to help BE denizens with their issues…

I'm waiting for the day when Oden is at 100% (because this year his100% is 80%) because of the microfracture

and we’re playing OKC and Durant’s skinny ass cuts into the lane and Oden hammers his crap back into his face…that will be sweet
