It's still a great day to be a Blazer!
"Once again, I can say- It's a great day to be a Blazer" - Brian Wheeler (the voice of Trail Blazer radio broadcasts)
Ok, ok. So what? Our lovable Portland Trail Blazers dug themselves an 18 point deficit in the second quarter, which they trimmed down to just 2 points at 1:02 minutes left in the game, but stil managed to lose. However, in spite of this hearbreakingly close loss, I will explain why Blazers fans still have a reason to celebrate.
In the Blazers' 98-94 loss to the surprisingly good Houston Rockets, elite scorer and All-Star guard Brandon Roy contributed 24 points and 5 assists, while forward LaMarcus Aldrige posted 21 points and 8 rebounds, and rookie Nicolas Batum gave his team 14 points, 1 steal, and 1 blocked shot in less than 27 minutes of play. Despite all this, the Blazers managed to lose.
An offensively sluggish first half (only 43 scored points, compared to the Rockets' 60) provided the Blazers with a deficit that was too difficult to overcome, despite a brilliant last half both offensively and defensively for the Blazers. Rockets' guard Ron Artest was forced by the Blazers to prove himself at the foul line 4 times. Any miss would lead to a potential tie forced by the Blazers. Artest certainly did prove himself, sinking all 4 free throws in the fourth quarter and running the Blazers' deficit up to 6 points with his steady clutch free throw shooting.
In spite of this disenheartening loss, Blazers fans still have a reason to smile at the end of the day.
Firstly, Blazers fans can rejoice in the fact that their team was better than last year's team- they have new talent, and their young players have matured yet another year. Rookie Nicolas Batum gave the Blazers his all today, shooting a brilliant 3 for 3 from behind the arc, as well as having a great game defensively, matching up with the likes of Ron Artest. Secondly, in only five minutes of play, rookie Jerryd Bayless was able to post two assists. (I believe that he should get a lot more playing time, as he is a point guard with limitless potential and that the Blazers should build around him.) Also, Travis Outlaw had a decent game, posting 15 points for his team. Outlaw is learning how to be a consistent player, which is what the Blazers need from him (though we surely also like his occasional flashes of brilliance.)
Secondly, our Blazers need only 6 more wins to reach the break even point. A good first half, followed by sloppy play for the rest of the season resulted in only a 41-41 record last year. We have nowhere to go but up, assuming that we win 7 games.
Thirdly, after this hard road trip, we have only easy coasting to look forwad too, that is, until our home game against the Lakers.
These three reasons, amongst others, are the reasons why it's still a great day to be a Blazer, no matter whether we won or lost today.

I loved how Batum looked
Bayless had two more assists
Roy scored 24 against Artest/Battier
LMA drew ten free throws
Travis hit some shots when we needed them
Joel did a great job on Yao
Channing has a great… personality.
So yeah. Lots of stuff to look forward to.

lol
Channing has a great… personality.
Way to see the good in everyone.
Want more aggressiveness? Try less Baylesslessness.

Channing is good looking, too
He’s got that going for him as well – he’s tailor-made to replace Mike Rice when he retires (or slumps over drunk).

We are going to lose once in a while
at least they put up a good battle. It was entertaining, I enjoyed watching.

I'm a realistic fan
and I’ve followed the Blazers for a long time. The swing through Texas is always very difficult. Playing tough to the end is a good sign for a team that is playoff bound. This team is very good at learning from game to game, and from half to half. I wasn’t happy with the huge streak that Houston had to end the first quarter, but for the Blazers to close out in the 4th the way they did – good job. Fighting to the end is a very important quality.

I hate to lose
but overall this was a great game to watch, and there’s a lot to be proud of if you’re a Blazer fan. I’m not exactly sure why Portland lost their groove halfway into the first quarter and throughout the second quarter, but I think the Blazers did a much better job getting themselves back into the game in the second half then they did against NO (even though that resulted in a win), the Mavs and OKC. I think the team seemed a little more calm and collected this game. Who knows? Maybe the Blazers can carry their second-half momentum into San Antonio and win big against the Spurs. Go Blazers!

Isn't that pretty much what happens every game on the road?
Down early then rally only to usually come up short? I don’t know that I want that to be my team’s pattern.

A 4 point loss on the road against a really good team...
… is never cause to get overly down on the team.

Gonna just forget the down by 18 part?
Maybe it’s our fate to only play from behind. But that’s not going to win you many games on the road when it counts.

definetely not forgetting about it-- its a concern to be sure
but this was a 1 possession game with a couple minutes to go. Are you going to ignore that?

"Easy coasting" ahead?
Er, the guys’ first game back is vs the Spurs. Tonight’s game could easily be the first in a four-game losing streak. If so, we won’t be feeling quite that rosy in a few days.

The hgh point of the game was Batum
It was great to see him with his 3 falling. I have very high hopes for that young man.

Reportedly, KP didn't pull the trigger on a trade because the other teams wanted Batum and/or Bayless
I think KP made the right call.

i hate to be a downer
but would we want the team going back to the locker room tonight saying “it’s a great day to be a blazer. we were great”
i agree that there are a lot of positives out there that shouldn’t be ignored, but aren’t we a little to good to be taking joy in moral victories?

Batum's play was very encouraging
If LMA and Brandon played like they usually do, or GO was playing things turn out differently. LMA especially just missed open shots he normally makes. Houston is tough at home, and I think that uptempo pace they played in the first quarter caught us by surprise.

I agree it's still fun being a Blazer fan, however that was a big disappointment last night
Still not quite over it. If they blast the Spurs, I will be.
