KP on Courtside
In the wake of Chad Ford's assertion re: deals offered to the Trail Blazers at the trade deadline, i submit to you Kevin Pritchard's comments during last night's edition of Courtside, which you can listen to here. I also trancribes a quote that would seem to address why trades, imagined or otherwise, didn't get done. So sayeth Pritchard:
"I think I have a good feel for this team. Being around all these guys for as long as I have, I think I know what they can handle in terms of another player. I like I've got a good grasp on that. Nate McMillan and I talk about that all the time; what kind of personality that is. And I don't want to get into all the details of that, but if we don't bring in the right guys then we could destroy what we have. Maybe destroy is too strong of a word because you feel like with this culture, maybe people will assimilated, sort of, to them. But I still worry that ... we're not grown enough and it still need time to grow."
Also a kind of non-update update on Oden. The full two hours of Courtside should be available shortly.

heard that last night
And it reminds me of the baseball trading deadline. You’ll have a team that has overachieved and is “in the race” for the pennant, and the players will complain that the front office didn’t make a deal for a veteran player to “put them over the top”
The Blazer players were just relieved that only Diogu was dealt. Sure, they need to grow up—and realize that opportunites to win playoff games/series/championships don’t come around every year. The future may be bright, but there’s no guarantee that you’ll be in this position every season (injuries, etc)

Battier FTW
great D, great role player, can teach these yungins how to ball. Smart as hell and would not mind playing 10-15mpg and being that James Jones role that basketball sage role to instruct players where to be on D and how to space the floor when he is on the court.

agree
And KP knows what he was doing. About a year or so back I think KP was talking about the culture, and someone asked him about bringing in Ron Artest or somebody like that. He said that in San Antonio, when the rebuilding process was getting underway around Duncan, they were careful to bring in ONLY class guys that fit their culture. Once that culture was established around Duncan, Parker, and Ginobili, and they had had success, THEN they could afford to bring in people that didn’t exactly fit their culture, because the locker room was strong enough based around DPG.
Our culture is not yet set. We still need to have playoff success built around Roy Oden LMA. Then we can bring in someone in if it feels right.
For now, I say just roll with what we got and let this team gel. You can’t underestimate the power of playing with the same teammates for a long period of time. That is how 3-peat type teams are built.

although if we did have a shot at stoudamire that didnt cost us one of the big 3
i think we should have taken it. the only drawback is the money, but man what a trading chip we would have had coming down the stretch into the summer.
It was "mascot night" at the Rose Garden, which apparently translates to a dozen inflatable versions of various NBA mascots being chased around the arena by Portland's "Blaze", which is some breed of rapist dog. -PostingandToasting

Really shoud'a been a fanshot...
It looks like we’ve got a full scale propaganda war being waged here on BE. We have those who would trust KP even if he did something that didn’t make sense from the outside versus those who would really like to see a bundling of our potential for a wise old man.
What does either side gain if they convince you? Or do they just feel like they need to get it off their chest?

KP loves chemistry-- and he's right to take it into account
I’m still don’t think standing pat at the deadline was a good basketball move… especially if that Chad Ford rumor is true, which I am pretty dubious about.

I just can't understand you.
From my perspective, you place an inordinate amount of credence to both stats and rumors. The contradiction keeps me awake sometimes.

"rumors" are hardly ever just rumors.
GMs talk to the press, especially the ESPN press. Just because they don’t source it doesn’t mean it’s not verified by many many folks. Doubt Sam Smith and Peter Vecsey if you want, but Chad’s got an excellent track record.

Yeah
That’s why I said from my perspective. I seem to remember you having issues with the Stoudemire rumors. It’s probably more of a “nature of the beast” thing. You like stats and you like trades, stat are pretty concrete but trade talk is all rumors. I probably could have worded it better and said something like it’s funny that the two things you’re most passionate about on Blazers Edge causes a contradiction in my mind.
