Who is the youngest team in the west?
Hi guys,
I am from Golden State of Mind. In the Bay Area press and all over the Warriors blog, we are refered to as the youngest team in the NBA, which we are by definition at 24.1 years. But I decided to weight age against playing time instead of just taking a raw average age. I compared the Warriors to the Portland Trail Blazers, Memphis Grizzlies, MinnesotaTimber Wolves, and The OKC Thunder.
Here are the results
|
Team |
Average Roster Age |
Actual Playing Age |
Minutes Leader |
|
Golden State Warriors |
24.1(24.3 17 man) |
25.7(25.6 17 man) |
Jackson(30) 1854 |
|
Portland Trail Blazers |
26.3 |
23.8 |
Aldridge (23) 2013 |
|
Memphis Grizzlies |
24.2 |
23.3 |
Mayo(21) 2093 |
|
Minnesota Timber Wolves |
26.9 |
25.0 |
Foye (25) 1986 |
|
Oklahoma City Thunder |
25.5 |
24.7 |
Durant (20) 2197 |

I think weighting by pt is the way to go
So, by your numbers I’d have to say Memphis is the youngest team in the West.

What about by Player Rotation?
I heard very recently that the Blazers had the youngest “Player Rotation” in the league.

Memphis also has a younger playing rotation
If you define playing rotation as the top 9 players for each team.

I agree
we had so many older players on our roster that barely played last year… i’d love to have seen how we matched up to the other two youngest teams in league history, based on actual playing time.
The goal is not to be better, the goal is to be the best.

Nice work
The Grizzlies are probably almost as young as some of the March Madness starting lineups.

good work! thanks for the work you’ve put in to this.

No problem,
I didnt think you guys should be ‘punished’ because of Raef, and we were be being ‘rewarded’ because Nellie has a bunch of rooks and soph’s at the end of the bench getting dnp-cd’s(including a guy named Anthony Morrow, that you guys might remeber : ) )
Dont you think you should change your sig since the guy died?
My full post on GSOM actually has the breakdown of total playing time, you guys have nobody over 25 on your rotation other than Blake and Pryzibilla… If Oden can prove to be healthy, you guys are going to dominate for a long time(as you guys already know)….
We will probably need to be patient and let this season play out.

He's referencing Larry Miller

when I walked into the rose garden a couple of days ago
I heard them mention Larry Miller dying.. I was really shocked because the dude seemed so healthy and young and I had to briefly consider foul play in retaliation for the letter scandal..
but then i saw the overhead and remembered the uphill battle Larry Miller, owner of the Jazz, had faced this year and joined in the moment of silence..

yea
I didn’t make that connection either…. about 10 years ago a guy with my name died in a car wreck and they had an article about it in the newspaper (that I didn’t see). I went to work the next day and people were giving me real weird looks… someone finally said “we thought you were dead”. Sombering experience to say the least.

Ah Anthony Morrow
nice that Nellie gave him one of his two Moments in the Sun against us… They hate his name over at ClipNation, too
Thanks for this – I crawled out on a knapkin at work the actual number of rookie minutes per game. Memphis again was #1, we were number 2, but the only winning team in the top 8 rookie minute providers

I found pretty much the same thing
When I looked at this a few months ago. Memphis is the youngest team in the league… even though Quick keeps saying the Blazers have the youngest “playing rotation” whatever that means.

And, thanks.
by PoliSam on Feb 23, 2009 8:35 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
nicely done,
I wish I had seen that data before.
I was tempted to create a rotational age. As a Warriors fan, CJ Watson numbers are inflated due to Moped, I mean Monta’s accident. As our some of our other bench players, its just to hard to adjust all the numbers to get a solid rotational number in mid season.
We will probably need to be patient and let this season play out.

For calculating average age
I did the same calculation that you did. The post I linked to is dated a bit… so it’s always good to check in on things as the season progresses.
If Ruffin keeps playing, maybe the Blazers will become “older”!

Nice post, nice work
You should become a Blazer fan. Bunch of geeks around here, you’d fit right in.
A case could be made that having a couple vets who don’t play much still adds experience on handling road trips, etc. But in general, I think you are looking at it the right way.

I wish I could,
but over the last 17 years we made the playoffs once, as an 8th seed. If I stuck around for that nonsense, might as well stick it out for the long haul.
The 2000-2001 GS Warriors team is extremely scary(not in the good, in a way that you look at the roster and say ‘My God, that was an NBA roster.’ http://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/GSW/2001.html

I totally agree and that would make the Grizz and the Blazers even younger. In your rotation the only guys you feature over 24 are Steve Blake(28) and Pryzibilla(29). They arent that old and solid contributors, but in the big scheme of things replacable if need be. The Grizz top 7 players are under 26,and the end of the bench is filled by vets Jaric, Buckner, Ross, and Miles(am I allowed to mention that guy here?) Thats the right way to do it, a young core with some solid vets to help the maturation process.
We will probably need to be patient and let this season play out.

Rec for this. A true fan. I hope that the Warriors become competitive in the near future. I think it would be great for the league in general to have someone else out here besides the Lxkers competing at the highest levels. – Elgin

Thanks, warriorsscore110 .. there's something special about being a fan
Your comments about the Warriors are very poignant. If I’m allowed to quote you:
“The difference from those teams and the Warriors is that they have a plan and we do not. … What is the Warriors plan? If everything works out and we might get to fight for the 8th seed and a 1 and done in the playoffs the next 2 -3 years? It is nice to know that that is our BEST case scenario for our team.”
I think I know what you’re feeling. We might root for different teams. But there’s something universal about being a fan. We share so much in common. Thanks again. As far as I’m concerned, you’e welcome here any time.

Thanks man,
there is a great thing about being a passionate fan of your team. I’m currently displaced in Boise for school, and over heard 2 guys at a bar talking about how good LaMarcus Aldrigde is, and for fun I went over to them to tell them that I thought he was over rated and if given the chance Brandan Wright would be the better player. It was a nice little debate and a good time.
In my book, as long as you dont root for a particular team in LA, you ok in my book. Though Jazz fans get on my nerves too…
We will probably need to be patient and let this season play out.

This is exactly how I feel. And I lived in Utah to go to school for 4 years. Couldn’t stand some of the Jazz fans there. Almost made me want to throw up.

thanks for the post,
i’ve been telling everybody that the Blazers have the youngest “playing” roster in the NBA. (hangs head in shame) Now I’ll actually know what I’m talking about when I’m talking. Well, at least so far as playing age is concerned. lol

Even with playing roster,
I would say you guys are number 2 behind the Grizzlies, barely. But you guys are making the playoff with home court and the Grizz are headed to the lottery(again) so I think you guys can live with that.
We will probably need to be patient and let this season play out.
