Junk down in the Big Easy - - 2/2/09

Tonight I get to enjoy a game closer to my east coast time zone...hopefully a big W..need to continue to redeem that letter..

Team was settled in there last night - - hopefully kept a repectable distance from Bourbon St. - - news from down there is always interesting

Bon-fire city style for instance...when I was down there in '98, the police arrested a local street fella for talking to me....felt bad cause I started the conversation...They watch out well for the tourists though, so that you can get plastered on grain alcohol and corn syrup without dealing with any lowlifes...

Great food, great music....haven't been back post-Katrina, but the French Quarter was largely spared, so I'm sure things are business as usual down town...Wonder if the still call their tall frozen drinks Hurricanes...

they do still call 'em hurricanes

and the Quarter looks great…it’s absolutely crazy what a difference about four feet in elevation made in sparing that part of town. I visited two summers ago in late July…I’ve never been in a hotter, more humid clime. We had a couple of days where it was 100 degrees with 100 percent humidity. If you’ve never experienced that, lemme assure you that it’s comically uncomfortable.

I was there last fall during hurricane ike claims

and the quarter seemed normal to me. I was stunned by the number of Larry Flint Hustler clubs. They were literally almost every other building in the Quarter.

Ixtapa, Mexico

I played tennis there in conditions like that. I would wipe the sweat off my palm, and five seconds later, there were pea-sized drops of sweat all over it again. I’ll take Phoenix instead. You sweat just as much, but it evaporates instantly.

I think there’s a Bassmasters Top 50 tourney near Mobile in April… you could try to get your pole signed by Kevin VanDam or Roland Martin. That’d be pretty sweet, eh?

New Orleans restaurants

A few months ago I asked my sister about New Orleans food — she did a culinary internship there and still keeps up with the food scene — and she said this list at Frommers was a pretty good place to start.

Another food question

For every away game I’ve been cooking up a meal that’s related to the opposing team or city. It’s one of my stupid little gameday rituals, just like my red underwear and socks.

But New Orleans is tough, just because there are so many options. Shrimp Creole? Blackened catfish? Jambalaya? Anyone else going to eat Cajan, Creole or Popeyes tonight?

Even if Bynum was healthy the Cavs would win it. Now that LeBron has another legitimate scorer next to him, they won’t be stopped. LeBron, Mo Williams, and a bunch of guys that play defense, rebound. LeBron is the dominant force in the NBA for the foreseeable future.

So I hung out for an hour and then the same guy who looked at my laptop took it in the back and they changed out my keyboard in about a half hour. Crazy I tell ya. Crazy.

Also, apparently spilling something on your laptop and growing mold in it is bad. I got a scolding.
