Around SBN: Full Coverage Of New York's Victory Celebration

We did it! (don't click if your name is Bob)

We kept the team we love! No trade celebration!

Will give Diogu a moment of silence… but he will probably be happier with floor time anyway.

I’m so happy we kept Roy, even LeBron for Roy would be a letdown for me. He represents what I am cheering for.

LaMarcus didn’t leave for Amar’e or Bosh (even though Ben’s headline almost made me throw up). For the price I much prefer LMA, not to mention I love how he doesn’t back down from NBA jerks like Garnett & Odom. He is our underrated guy with skills nearing the best at his position for his age.

Oden is a huge part of our future, and however tenuous that might make our future, I’m gladder to be a part of it because of him. And who could replace him anyway.

Blake. Don’t take him away for the super expensive Hinrich! He is what we need for now. If he continues to up his game (defense) he could be what we need then, too.

Batum, the nation doesn’t believe in you, but I do. I think you are our championship SF and I’d be much happier winning with you ‘cause you are making your dream come true. Your dad would be proud.

Pryz. You had me at “I hate New York.” I have no idea how you have stayed so cool all these years while the refs make at least one absurd call against you every game. You belong in this team while we try to reach the stars. If anyone has earned it, it’s you.

Outlaw is a force of nature. When he is on a tear no one on this team can score like him (well, until you are back Webster). I hope we are in a championship game where you go off unstoppable style for a game. I would laugh at the opposing defenses actually thinking they can change the outcome of your plays. Thanks for keeping this team close too. You are huge for our locker room. Something that even Butler/Prince probably couldn’t replace.

Rudy FTW!!! Well, lets face it. You aren’t getting traded because the Blazers like doubled our fanbase as soon as we saw you play, saw you swagger, saw you at all. That being said, I don’t have a mancrush on you, but I love the way you play (except for I’m siding with Pryz on your defense).

Sergio, our little general. Sorry about the playing time, but you’ve gotta admit that the other two are pretty good too. I love to see Blake, Bayless & even Roy learn from your passing. Luckily we have Outlaw and Batum to finish when they pass it. Anyone could finish on your passes. I definitely never wanted Hinrich or anyone else actually available over you. Thanks for actually playing some defense too.

Bayless there is no way Portland is giving up on your talent. You are true competitive fire without the cockiness. We’re loving watching you play the game because every time you are on the court you bring it. We don’t want Rose or Westbrook. We want you.

Webster, we wouldn’t get so mad at you getting injured if we didn’t think you were so great. It’ll be nice to have a true shooter back at the three. Get well soon, we aren’t giving up on you.

Shav you celebrate on the bench almost as much as Bayless. Sorry we can’t get you on the court, but you are my No. 1 13th man in the whole NBA.

Frye how do you have such a great attitude. Great to have you around and I know you can get the shot back. We don’t want you packaged out of here at all.

Raef! Kickin’ it over in the Midwest… I think? You were great in our locker room and it is good to see that you weren’t used to gut our team. I’m sure it was you who made KP put down that phone. What a great guy! And rich too!

Ruffin. ‘Nuff said.

On behalf of all of us Blazer fans here at BE, we are proud to have you on our team. Play with fire in your veins; you’ve earned the right to take it to the next level. Go Blazers!

KP is a genius year ‘round to Blazers fans until he doesn’t make some dumb trade just to make the fans happy. Like I just said in another thread KP > the fans.

would have traded Frye

if KP didn’t feel any RLEC deal was worth it.. fine, whatever, its over.. but Frye for a pick or a scrub would have been nice for a guy trying to get some PT in a contract year..

This has probably been covered...

but I’m particularly dense. Is Ruffin’s contract partially covered by insurance like Raef’s, since he hasn’t played all season? How does that all work?

yes...

if the player doesn’t play in 41 games, the leagues insurance policy kicks in and recompensates 80% of the total.

Hilarious

I wasn’t anti-trade, I thought there might be some real opportunities, and would have really liked the alleged Carter one if it went down.

But I love our team as is, and wouldn’t jeopardize it unless there was something that would legitimately improve us. I’m happy.

Look at it this way. We lost Ike Diogu.
1. He never played.
2. His cap hold would have messed up our cap space this summer.
3. Thus, he would have been renounced, so he was simply going to be a lost asset.

What did we get for this non-asset?
1. Picked up a trade exception, which KP may be able to use to facilitate a deal on draft day.
2. Saved $3 million, and we all know what KP has done in the past with $3 million.

I can live with that. A small deal, but a good one for us (and probably for Sacramento as well).

When I rule the world, everyone will know how to use Excel.

by jscot on Feb 19, 2009 12:50 PM PST reply actions

KP is all about draft day and building the team through the draft and the draft alone, a-men...

He has never pulled a decent in-season trade. Last year that meant a tailspin and no cookie. This year it will mean a tailspin and no cookie.

Is he a megagenius with the patience of a redwood tree and a master plan?

Or is he a crafty drafter in love with his own draft-day hypercuteness with no grasp of reality in the present?

One of those…

Last night I almost wrote a "Dear KP" post

saying that if he’s going to trade one of my beloved Blazers, like Trout or Sergio, he better be right cause I love them and believe in their games and their potential to improve. I decided not to because in KP I trust. You all know how much Kev likes to trade but he showed remarkable faith in this team to not pull the trigger.

That or no team would trade with Pritch based on the fear of being slapped.

Cocky guys don't

come to practice first and leave last, wear out their coaches ears in the office asking how to improve, stay up all night watching film, or give all the right answers when questioned about not playing for 21 straight games.

Bayless has the swag, but he’s a gritty toiler who is content to earn his minutes—and when he gets them we can rest assured that they’re deserved.

There are very, very few hyper-competitive all-world athletes (elite even among NBA players, seriously, ask anyone) with this combination of traits. This kid’s a keeper.

by JRRIDER on Feb 19, 2009 2:01 PM PST reply actions

Wow, this post is the epitome of "bury your head in the sand"

I love our players too… but to celebrate victory that we didn’t do anything that could have made us better, when we clearly need to get better, seems ridiculous.

“Play with fire in your veins; you’ve earned the right to take it to the next level.”

Really? So all of this time they have actually been a great defensive team, they just were waiting until they had earned the right to “take it to the next level”? I hope this is the case!

Unfortunately, it isn’t, and as much as I love this team and the players, if we want to compete in the playoffs, we have a LONG, LONG way to go, and so shouting a victory cry here seems to me like shouting a victory cry that we were on our way to a humiliating first round playoff exit, and now we are still on our way to a humiliating first round exit, so… HOORAY!

by TimG on Feb 19, 2009 2:59 PM PST reply actions

- 1

Wow. That’s a whole lot of negative sentiment for one optimistic post. I also think you might have read a bit more into the “fire in your veins” than was implied.

As far as a humiliating first round exit I think that might be a bit of a reach. Right now we’re on pace to face Houston in the first round with home court. Oh, and McGrady is out for the season… I’d say a humiliating exit is definitely on the pessimistic side of things.

I respect your right to have an opinion but I personally disagree strongly with your implications that we have a group destined for playoff failure…

by Powder842 on Feb 19, 2009 4:38 PM PST up reply actions

I don't mean it to be negative sentiment

That’s just what I see it as…

I really hope we can make noise in the playoffs, and now that the deadline is over, I’ll be back to hoping—but especially when we were coming up on the deadline with the potential to maybe make a move that would really improve some areas we really need it, I was just trying to be objective and hoping for a move like that. Since it didn’t happen, I’m disappointed, and very concerned about those playoff chances. The reason I think they will struggle badly in the playoffs is simply because of our very poor defense. But hey, maybe they will get hot and overcome it… Doubt it though.

The point was just that, to me, this post was “optimistic” in a way which was deliberately reactionary and antagonistic to all of those (like myself) who wanted a trade… and it went way overboard in it’s love for our players. If everything said in this post is true, then hey, we should be able to make no moves and win 8 championships from here on out, doing nothing. If I thought that were true, I’d be on board with all the “optimism”—but since it is celebrating in a deliberatly antagonizing way that we did not make our team better… it seems misplaced, which was why I posted.

by TimG on Feb 19, 2009 5:32 PM PST up reply actions

I'm beginning to wonder if I'm the only tim here ...

… whose opinion of the Blazers is not that of a constipated sounding sourpuss whose girl just dumped him and his dog ran away.

(Ok, so you don’t have a dog. Maybe you should get one.)

hakkaa päälle !

by timg56 on Feb 19, 2009 5:08 PM PST up reply actions

I didn't think I sounded constipated...

I wasn’t groaning loudly or anything…

Plus, my girlfriend dumped me and took my dog with her years ago, and I’m over it already, so I don’t think that motivated my post.

My opinion can be summarized by my firm belief that teams in the playoffs need to play some sort of decent defense to win, and we are a very poor defensive team, simple as that. It’s not the end of the world, but the fact that it seemed as though we may be able to improve that area, and didn’t, is, for me, a cause for disappointment, not for celebration and blind praise of the players we have.

by TimG on Feb 19, 2009 5:36 PM PST up reply actions

I apologize.

I’m influenced by timbo being on a tear the last day or two.

I’ll agree with you on playoff teams needing to be good defensive teams if they want to last past the first round. However I do not believe that is something that can be fixed through the acquisition of one player. You can probaly count on 1 or 2 hands the number of guys that can automatically improve a defense by themselves. At a guess, I’d say Shawn Marion is the only one who might get included in that group and was available. And I don’t think Miami would have traded him for Raef. It would have likely had to include someone like Joel as well.

Any trade KP could have done would most likely have resulted in a marginal improvement of our defense, at the very best. I’m fairly sure that Portland concluded that the returning benefits were not clearly worth more than the players and flexibility that would be lost in a deal. Therefore, I can’t feel dissappointed.

hakkaa päälle !

by timg56 on Feb 20, 2009 7:19 AM PST up reply actions

I look forward to our "first round exit"

Because our team is made of the kind of players who take that kind of thing personally. The fire burning in Jordan after repeatedly getting squashed by the Pistons? You think Amare or Vince Carter has that in his belly? If so, you’re a minority of one.

If this Blazers team makes the playoffs it will be a coup. A triumph, even. Getting in means getting the chance to lose, the chance to learn what it takes to not do so next time. I want to see this team one year older (still SO young!) with that knowledge and a newfound maturity & desire for vindication.

These are very exciting times, the kind of times sports fans spend their entire lives dreaming about. Let’s not lose the forest for the trees, gentlemangs.

if we are so lousy

how are we fourth in the western conference? yes, we need to improve in some areas, but we are a darn good team. miraculous considering how young we are. all this team needs is time. we all know we’re not winning the championship this year. we are going to the playoffs. we might even win a series. next year, these players will be reading each others minds as they rotate on defense. just wait.

Probably the Suns.

Maybe the Mavs.

Without T-Mac and Alston, probably the Rockets.

Without a healthy Chandler, definitely the Hornets, and if he comes back healthy, maybe the Hornets.

Without a healthy Manu, possibly the Spurs.

I think that about covers it.

This was an awesome post

I really liked the part about Rudy. Everyone I know loves his game and just wishes he would play some D. When you look at the Vanilla Gorilla you are just amazed with how far he has come along as a big, when you look at our big three it is amazing how KP put this together. I just wish we could say more about Marty Mart. All in all this made me smile knowing we really do have something special here and did not need a trade. Thank You
