The Final Hour
We've already wrecked the comment speed of the Trade-Day thread below with all of the activity, so here's a new thread to comment in for the final hour of the 2008-09 trading season. (Though you know, of course, news will trickle in all afternoon.) We will update this post as needed.
And remember, look for this label on your trades. Don't accept any trade without it!
--Dave (blazersub@yahoo.com)
UPDATE 5: We now have the Knicks picking up the OKC/NO leftovers, acquiring Chris Wilcox for Malik Rose.
UPDATE 6: And rumor has it that the Magic have acquired Houston point guard Rafer Alston by giving up a first round pick to Memphis who then sends Kyle Lowry to Houston, accompanying the Magic's Brian Cook.

You gotta feel sorry for the elves
One minute, they are the most powerful race in Middle-Earth.
Then they get all uppity and leave; they’re boat sinks in the Arctic Ocean, and the next think you know, they’re all enslaved as toymakers by a fat man in a red suit.
And what does Man do to assist its former allies? Nothing.

In The Descent of Man, Charles Darwin uses the phrase "survival of the fittest" only twice. He uses the word "love," by contrast, over ninety times. Darwin never wrote about "selfish genes." For Darwin, the main force behind human evolution is survival of the most compassionate, not survival of the fittest. Human evolution is driven by moral sensitivity, or love.

When you buy Fair Trade Coffee—how do you know? Do the Fair Trade Coffee folks have teams of inspectors who can conduct surprise inspections on coffee plantations to make sure the workers aren’t being exploited? Or is this kinda like buying toys from China—you never know?

by BlazersOrBust on Feb 19, 2009 11:07 AM PST up reply actions
Big evidence of that
is the trade exception + the fact we can take on salary in a trade.
That’s actually where my bet would be. We can do a lot of interesting things trading picks and low-contract players for more expensive players.
one or the other
if we clear cap space, we lose the trade exception (unless we used it on draft day, which I highly suspect is the plan)
Rule #1 of nitpicking is to get it right.
I didn't know it was One or the Other
Unless on Draft Day?
Then I’d be looking for a deal then. Moreso than the plethora of picks possibly postulates.
you can’t have both cap space and exceptions. the TE plus the MLE plus our 50.5 million in salaries will put us over the cap. We can choose to waive all our exceptions and be under the cap instead.
That all applies after July 1, when the new year actually starts. In June, when you are allowed to make draft day trades, we could theoretically send the trade exception to some other team and take back their 3 million dollar player and a draft pick (exactly what we did for Jones/Rudy)
Rule #1 of nitpicking is to get it right.
I'm so sick of picks.

Do deals really go down in the last 15 minutes, or 20 minutes before the deadline, or are we getting worked up for nothing?
Trades happen all during the morning
It’s the trade approval process and the news leaking that is random. You could have news this afternoon too, though it’s unlikely that such news would be about major players.

When I say the afternoon news is unlikely to be about major players I mean this:
—News comes out about some trades after the deadline because people weren’t paying as much attention to those deals.
—People pay lots of attention to major players.
—Therefore if a major player is traded it’s likely we’ll hear that news leaked earlier rather than later.
None of this has anything to do with whether a trade is made or not. It’s about when we hear about the trade.

Chad Ford: Spies in New Jersey say it looks like Vince Carter will finish the season as a Net. With just 45 minutes to go before the trade deadline, trade talks have stalled with Carter. It’s not impossible that things heat up right toward the end. It’s happened before. But right now the odds are strongly in favor of Carter remaining in New Jersey unless their owner, Bruce Ratner, comes back to management and tells them to dump him at any cost.
Could the Knicks make three deals today? Sources say the Kings have offered Kenny Thomas for Nate Robinson and Jared Jeffries. If the Knicks could move Jeffries, it would clear another $6.8 million in the summer of 2010. The Knicks would have to give up the talented Robinson and eat Thomas’ $8.7 million salary next year … but it’s probably worth it to the Knicks. Especially now that they’ve shored up their offense with the Larry Hughes and Chris Wilcox deals.
Hahahahaha! Larry Hughes and Chris Wilcox “shored up their offense”??

real gm update
A source has told David Aldridge that there have been Thursday discussions between the Sixers and Blazers centered on Andre Miller.
The deal would involve the expiring contract of Blazers center Raef LaFrentz and another Portland guard in exchange for Miller and forward Reggie Evans.
Philadelphia wants Jerryd Bayless, and the Blazers have made the rookie guard next to untouchable. Portland would be more open to completing a deal, the source said, to include a guard like Steve Blake or Sergio Rodriguez.
However, the trade might be resurrected if a third team — believed to be Memphis —could get involved, sending guard Kyle Lowry to Philadelphia. The 76ers have long coveted Lowry, who starred locally at Villanova.

Bottom line:
KP likes Travis.
Travis is our most valuable dispensable trade asset but KP has confidence in him.
That, my friends, is the take home lesson today.

Outlaw can't carry Horry's jock
You kids are too young to remember, but Horry was a great perimeter defender before his legs went, and as smart a player as there was in the league.
When the Rockets swept the Magic, Horry completely shut down Dennis Scott, who had been killing people in the playoffs. Key to that series.
Horry was a key contributor to a bunch of champions. Trout seems like a great guy, but no team on which he plays 25 minutes a night will sniff an NBA ttitle.

Really I sure paul allen used the x-project to put his own personal sattelite into orbit to ensure KP’s communications to the League office. I’m also confident that satttelite has a laser to disable communicationto all but one or two other desired teams giving the rest busy signal every time the dial out. KP did not fail by not making a trade
We have zero evidence that the Blazers were in a position to make a favorable trade.
We can draw conclusions based on the perceived value of our players and their contracts, but we do not know how other teams valued those players and contracts.
Right now, the best assumption is that the Blazers were not offered a favorable trade, and that their offers were refused. We can look forward to trading on Draft Day, when we will have the advantage of several picks, and either/both a trade exception and cap room.
Good day.

BREAKING NEWS: The Portland Trail Blazers announced today that they have executed a trade. The Blazers have traded forwards Travis Outlaw, Channing Frye, and Nicolas Batum to the Portland Trail Blazers for forwards Travis Outlaw, Channing Frye, and Nicolas Batum. Said Blazers GM Kevin Pritchard, “We hated to part with those guys but we feel that this gives us one of the most promising, young frontcourts in the league. Outlaw can score and has been known to hit the clutch shot. Batum is young and raw but he is already an NBA-ready defender. We see him fitting in nicely with our scorers. We weren’t sure about taking Frye in the deal as we don’t really have space for him but we insisted he be included before we would agree to the deal with us. His contract is flexible, however. And he does have a good sense of humor.” The league is waiting to ratify this deal depending on the salaries matching. Confirmation is expected soon.

Marc Stein: Looks like we have a fairly significant three-way deal that has been submitted to the league just before the trade deadline.
NBA front-office sources tell ESPN.com that Orlando is acquiring Rafer Alston from Houston to fill the void created at point guard by Jameer Nelson’s shoulder injury.
The Rockets will receive Memphis guard Kyle Lowry, Orlando forward Brian Cook and perhaps two other minimum-salaried players to make the finances work.

but it didn’t happen that way. I grew up listening to West and Baylor lose to the Celtics annually. That was my Laker team. I pulled for the Lxkers against the Bulls in the finals but I was pretty much done with the Lxkers at that point.

KP will be drafting for the "10 titles down the road" for years and years and years... THE EMPEROR HAS NO CLOTHES!!!

When you say years and years and years....
You must only mean the 3 years that KP has had his hand on the wheel.
Get a grip dude.

The better question is this: how many years in a row out of the playoffs will this make?
Two more words: Kevin. Durant.
The cilantro in your tapioca pudding since 2007.™
I suspect he knows that
but I would also guess that it wasn’t time to move based on what was offered.
The goal is not to be better, the goal is to be the best.
Maybe
because we have a lot of players who will need to be resigned over the next 2-3 years so we’ll have to either re-sign them or find replacements…
We could have replaced them now
For the long term. We could have had a major upgrade with a young player.
But, that said, I have a weird man crush on Martell.
Maybe
but acquiring a vet now might not be smart if they’re gonna be old or need to be re-signed before we are even ready to make a run.
2-3 YEARS is the operative term
It ain’t about this year.

this summer
if we stand pat then, then we’ll all be here this time next year to see if we can buy on the cheap and move expiring deals and capspace for a major players
Rule #1 of nitpicking is to get it right.
Nope. Pritchard is all about drafting guys and holding 'em six years until they're ready to be NBA players...
He’s the kind of guy that buys 5 cases of wine at the winery and stuffs it in his cellar…

Why?
You SERIOUSLY think VC is the difference between 1st round and out… and championships?
The difference is ODEN. If he isn’t Oden, then worry.
VC coulda helped for this season at least, but oh well. He musta’ been too expensive.
Relying on Oden to become dominant seems like a dicey proposition at this point, especially now that he's injured again
Carter would put us in the mix for the West Finals, with an outside shot at beating the Lakers. Wallace would make us a lot better now and into the future.
This is a massive missed opportunity.
Boomshakalaka
Ummmm....wrong
KP believe that he can stand pat with this roster, make the playoffs this season, then make whatever changes he needs over the summer, now that he has a bit more cap flexibility and a pretty detailed notebook on what other teams want/need.
He has never indicated this is the exact roster that gets the Blazers to a championship.

I think that is the crux of the problem.
We have not seen all the pieces together, and you are being way too impatient. If it’s not you getting angry for KP not making a move, it would have been somebody else getting angry that he traded their favorite player. Cut the guy a break, maybe he was pressured to not trade RLEC so that PA would get cap relief. I thought you were one of the more balanced posters on this site, but it seems I mistook your constant cynicism as a balanced non homer view.
The reality is this:
PF: LeMarcus “I Only Shoot Jumpers” Aldridge / Travis “I Only Shoot Jumpers” Outlaw
C: Joel Pryzbilla / injured reserve
Those are the bigs. Good luck with that stretch run — let alone the playoff bloodbath if they do slip in at the 8 to face the Lakers…
The cilantro in your tapioca pudding since 2007.™
And the sarcasm font is in effect calling Travis a "big" -- he's a 3 that plays out of position so he can score the ball, at the cost of D and rebounds.

This was a Carter deal. I would have preferred another deal like RF and Ridnour for cheap, but well... Is that too much risk?
Carter (32), Dooling (28), Swift (6 million expiring) for RLEC, Travis, Sergio, Frye, Rights to Petteri, pick.
The Nets wanted a first round pick, while KP wanted to give them second rounders and was reluctant to take on Swift or Williams for the rest of the season (headcases)

Then NJ changed the filler, and suddenly KP wanted the Golden State first rounder too. A bit too greedy?

I wandered into an Emo forum on accident
Everyone put down the Dashboard Confessional CD or whatever Emo kids listen to these days, head outside, go to Hot Topic, get a new Simple Plan t-shirt, and relax.
Goodness gracious me.

What are you impressions of Roy?
"He's just a very, very good basketball player. Very smart. Very heady. He can do a little bit of everything on the court. As coaches, when we scout Portland we kind of put him in the same category as Kobe (Bryant), LeBron (James), Dwyane Wade. We treat him the same. He's that good."
- Byron Scott
Some of the outrage
reminds me of a couple of other times.
Shawn Kemp. blazer acquired him and so many people at work were so happy. I shook my head because the guy was a wash-up and it took people a few months to see that themselves. It was a “brilliant” move at the time.
Stache. Blazers didn’t draft him and people were bemoaning that. he could shoot. He was “local” (what does local have to do with talent? are you guys all smoking something? wait, it’s portland) This was bemoaned by fans a little.
The point is, that most fans are looking at the right now, or the past, or just stats. Blazers take into account finances, chemistry, five year future potential. Management is very good at what they do, and they should be giving some room. they’ve done a fantastic job in the past. Are they too scared? Personally I don’t think so as I didn’t like any of the trades mentioned. Really though, they have ten times the information as everyone else. They can make informed decisions, fans are just guessing. Personally, I think the organization has earned some trust by making many good decisions in the past. Let it play out till summer.
The goal is not to be better, the goal is to be the best.

i'm trying to get you to expound on the creed around here "in KP I trust" - what are the limits?
do you trust him in all situations or are there you don’t trust him in?

I gotta say...
We may never know the details of all the deals, or what’s in KP’s long range plan, or many many other details and variables, but I can’t help feel a certain degree of disappointment.
A tremendous build up, and then……..
understandable
and i’m with you.
On the other hand, you better believe that this trade discussion now was a huge fact finding bonanza for draft day. You know EXACTLY what people want and what they’re looking for.
The goal is not to be better, the goal is to be the best.
Golden Ticket
Here is the thing. I think we have all gotten worked up on the notion that the players we were interested in were “free.” Now as awesome as RLEC was, you have to think that if Vince Carter or any of the others were being fire saled, they would have been traded, if not to the blazers then to someone else. Maybe we did miss out on something, but maybe, and in my opinion more likely they were asking more than we were willing to give for aging SFs with a ton of money left on their contract.

Travis is glad the team didn’t trade him before they made the playoffs
Travis just hucked a long shot that almost hit tom penn

It seems KP has fallen in love with his guys
I have doubts he’ll ever make a trade involving the guys he’s brought in except for 2nd rounders like McBob and throw ins like Ike.

Seems like at least half the poeple posting
need to be on a suicide watch. Pretty harsh when you extremely young, talented team is looking at home court advantage in the playoffs.
hey thanks for pointing that out
Very young talented team. Absolutely right. I’m glad we didn’t do something risky and mess up our chemistry.
Thank you for standing pat, KP. You STILL da man!
Thabo to OKC for...
a first round draft pick. If they had kept Chandler, this move would have made them amazing.
