Official Press Release

Here's the press release from the Blazers on the Deal of the Century (or DOTC, as it shall henceforth be called):

TRAIL BLAZERS ACQUIRE FORWARD MICHAEL RUFFIN

Three-Way Trade with Sacramento and Chicago Sends Ike Diogu to Kings

PORTLAND, Ore. - As part of a three-way trade with Sacramento and Chicago, the Portland Trail Blazers have acquired forward Michael Ruffin from Chicago in exchange for forward Ike Diogu, who is sent to Sacramento, General Manager Kevin Pritchard announced today.

The Trail Blazers also gain a $3 million trade exception, which they can use for one calendar year.

"We want to thank Ike for his time with the Trail Blazers, and hopefully this trade will give him an opportunity to play more minutes in Sacramento ," said Pritchard. "This move will give us trade flexibility going forward with the $3 million trade exception we gained in the deal."

An eight-year veteran, Ruffin, 32, averaged 1.8 points and 4.0 rebounds in 403 career games with Chicago , Philadelphia , Utah , Washington and Milwaukee . He has not appeared in a game for Chicago this season.

Diogu, 25, played in 19 games for Portland this season, averaging 1.4 points and 0.9 rebounds in 3.8 minutes per game. He was acquired by the Trail Blazers from the Indiana Pacers along with the draft rights to Jerryd Bayless on July 9, 2008. Diogu has posted averages of 5.9 points and 3.0 rebounds in 177 games during his four-year NBA career.

Whoa we all missed the part about getting a trade exception.

Or at least I did. That could be big.

From Wiki
Traded Player Exception: If a team trades away a player with a higher salary than the player they acquire in return (we’ll call this initial deal “Trade #1”), they receive what is called a Traded Player Exception, also known colloquially as a “Trade Exception”. Teams with a trade exception have up to a year in which they can acquire more salary in other trades (Trade #2, #3, etc) than they send away, as long as the gulf in salaries for Trade #2, #3, etc are less than or equal to the difference in salary for Trade #1. This exception is particularly useful when teams trade draft picks straight-up for a player; since draft picks have no salary value, often the only way to get salaries to match is to use a trade exception, which allows trades to be made despite unbalanced salaries. It is also useful to compensate teams for losing free agents as they can do a sign and trade of that free agent to acquire a trade exception that can be used later. Note this exception is for single player trades only, though additional cash and draft picks can be part of the trade.

You can just see KP...

He has a phone in both hands, talking to team X and says “so, if I throw in a $3M trade exception you will do this deal?!” And on the other line he has Chicago/Sacramento doing the deal with Ike/Ruffin + $3M. I smell a fleecing coming real soon.

by bigdaddy4838 on Feb 18, 2009 5:21 PM PST reply actions

except

you can’t combine a trade exception with other exceptions or with players..,.so I don’t think its utility is immediate. It seems like the kind of thing that you do because #1, it saved PA about a million bucks plus luxury tax savings plus luxury tax kickbacks for being under (so maybe like 4-5 mil all told) and #2, like jksnake said above, nothing wrong with converting your 14th man to a trade exception.

by BlazersOrBust on Feb 18, 2009 5:25 PM PST up reply actions

but you can

use it in a 2nd deal with the same team to take another player off their hands. sort of a sweetener

Rule #1 of nitpicking is to get it right.

by douglast on Feb 18, 2009 5:26 PM PST up reply actions

ah that's true

I didn’t think about that. I don’t know how many odious contracts there are in the league that are only worth 2.8 mil — that’s pretty chump change even on the rookie scale — but your point is well-taken regardless.

by BlazersOrBust on Feb 18, 2009 5:28 PM PST up reply actions

it got us Rudy

we had to use a TE to take on James Jones in order to entice Phoenix into letting us buy the rights to Rudy. how many Ike’s are out there sitting on someone’s bench makng 3 million? probably more than we think

Rule #1 of nitpicking is to get it right.

by douglast on Feb 18, 2009 5:32 PM PST up reply actions

That's certainly true

and we might see more and more owners pressuring their GMs into Sarvering away their first-rounders just to not have to pay them.

by BlazersOrBust on Feb 18, 2009 5:35 PM PST up reply actions

and it makes

all those 2nd round picks that KP has been stashing all the more valuable. Since there’s no 3 year guaranteed contracts “attached” to them

by two4larue on Feb 18, 2009 5:56 PM PST up reply actions

ahhh

but you could take a crappy contract in the MAIN trade and get a decent young piece with the trade exception, whereas the deal wouldn’t have worked if you had put the decent young piece in with the crappy contract. interesting.

by BlazersOrBust on Feb 18, 2009 5:30 PM PST up reply actions

I wonder if when other GMs hear about this if it would affect their willingness to deal with Pritch?

I posted this the other day, but there was a comparison of GMs that are also MJ leftovers & both of their (Kerr & John Paxon) worst draft day moves happened to net us L.A. & Rudy… it’s worth a gander: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/steve_aschburner/02/16/kerr.paxson/index.html

I hope that this sets up

an epic three way trade among the Blazers, Bobcats and Nets
Where Portland gets: Devin Harris, Gerald Wallace, Some bad contracts.
Charlotte Gets: Bayless, VC, some expiring contracts. NJ gets: The Spanish connection, Trout, Felton, RLEC.

That gives Portland a dynasty lineup, NJ a salary gastric-bypass with some nice cheap peices to build around, And Charlotte a respectable rotation with plenty of room to grow

TRADE CHATTER- didn't know where to put this all...

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?page=TradeTalkRoundup-090218

Chris Broussard: It looks like it’s Portland or bust for Vince Carter, according to a person with knowledge of the trade talks surrounding New Jersey’s star forward.

“It’s looking like it’s going to be head-to-head between Carter and Richard Jefferson,” the person said. “I think Jefferson’s going to be the one who goes to Portland.”

While Carter may be the better player, Portland’s concerned with Carter’s age (he turned 32 last month) and the three years, $51 million left on his contract (though only $4 million of the $18 million in his final season is guaranteed).

The Nets have their own concerns about Carter’s contract and that’s why they’ve been shopping him. They’ve spoken with San Antonio, Houston and Dallas but nothing has come of those talks.

Discussions with San Antonio have broken down because the Spurs, while willing to part with Bruce Bowen and Fabricio Oberto, are not willing to include Roger Mason Jr. and George Hill in the deal.

Houston would have traded Tracy McGrady for Carter, but McGrady’s announcement that he’ll have season-ending microfracture surgery killed those chances.

“There will be no Vince deal,” another source close to the situation said, referring to the Rockets.

The Los Angeles Clippers, who since training camp have regretted signing Baron Davis to a five-year, $65 million deal, have tried to get involved, proposing a three-team move that would send Davis to Houston, McGrady to New Jersey and Carter to LA. But no one but the Clippers liked that deal.

If Carter doesn’t go to Portland, will the Nets send him wherever they can?

“I’d be surprised if they did a straight salary dump, but at the end of the day that might be best for their organization,” said one source.

As for Milwaukee’s Jefferson, it’s far from a done deal that he’ll join the Blazers. The Bucks would love to send Jefferson to Portland in a deal that would bring back Raef LaFrentz’s expiring contract, but another executive close to the talks said, “It’s not dead but there’s nothing happening right now.”

The Bucks’ talks with San Antonio about Jefferson have stalled as well.

Portland’s telling teams it has 15 different players it can get for LaFrentz. But many executives around the league are skeptical, saying the Blazers like to talk about deals but are always hesitant to pull the trigger on anything significant.

Carter is a top swingman

and will continue to be for a few years. He’d vault us into Western Conference Finals contention.

He would mean we’d beat New Orleans and others in a series. Peja guarding VC? Von Wafer guarding VC or Roy? Richardson guarding VC or Roy? Anyone on Dallas guarding VC and Roy?

We’re WCF-bound with him on the roster.

POSTED: Feb. 18 — 9:14 p.m. ET

Chad Ford: The Bucks got some more momentum in their quest to find some salary relief for Richard Jefferson Wednesday evening.

Sources say that the Bucks had discussions with the Cavs about a possible Jefferson for Wally Szczerbiak swap. The Cavs have gotten much more active over the past 48 hours making pitches to Washington for Antawn Jamison and the Clippers for Marcus Camby. However, the Wizards and Clippers have both given the Cavs the stiff arm.

Another source also confirmed that the Blazers did make a call to the Bucks to renew discussions of a possible Jefferson for Raef LaFrentz swap. The two teams had spoken on and off about a deal for several weeks but the Bucks hadn’t heard from them in recent days.

The Blazers, as of this evening, were also still trying to find a way to put together a better package for Gerald Wallace after the Bobcats turned down an preliminary LaFrentz for Wallace offer earlier in the day. The Bobcats would still like the Blazers to take back Nazr Mohammed or to throw Nicolas Batum into a deal.

With so many parts, it looks like any Jefferson deal will likely go down to the trade deadline tomorrow.
