I know exactly where KP is going with this!!!!

It’s gonna be kinda like that guy who did an experiment where he traded a paper clip for something, and continued to barter with people until he got a house without having to spend any money.

This is the exact same thing!!!! First it’s Diogu for Ruffin. Then we’ll see something like Ruffin for some other guy who barely plays. Each time he trades, he’ll get slightly more value in the deal. He’ll work his way up through bench players, then sixth men…..then fringe starters………..then legit starters!!!!

Long story short:

Ruffin = Chris Paul

KP does it again! Championship, baby!!!!

Have a 3rd string PF that only makes a little over half a million than one that makes close to 3 million… good move KP.

by Escrote on Feb 18, 2009 2:55 PM PST reply actions

Saving Money

This move saves Portland almost $2 mil in salary (pro rated since the season is 2/3 over), and not to mention another $2 mil at the end of the year, because we are over the luxury tax cap. So this deal makes sense from a dollars and cents point of view.

by Feesampo21 on Feb 18, 2009 2:56 PM PST reply actions

KP2's analysis...

The Blazers’ position in all of this is slightly more nebulous. Dealing Diogu saves them money against the luxury tax, while they’ve also created a trade exception that could be put to use in the next 21 hours. We’ll see what, if anything, Kevin Pritchard has up his sleeve between now and tomorrow’s deadline.

This smells like VC

If you net Ike’s and Ruffin’s contracts I believe this creates some sort of trade sme sort of a trade exception, correct? Ike was getting $2.9M and Ruffin is getting ~$700k, leaving net value of ~$2.2M. Add Raef’s $12.7M to that and you get $14.9M, just over VC’s $14.7M contract value…

I was just assuming the net of this trade leaves us with a trade exception, and that we could use that in a trade. Apparently I’m wrong! Do you know a website where I can go to look up all the nitty-gritty on this kind of thing?

UPDATE from ESPN
POSTED: Feb. 18 — 6:08 p.m. ET

Jefferson
Chad Ford: Two days ago it looked like Blazers GM Kevin Pritchard, armed with Raef LaFrentz’s expiring contract, would be the focal point of the trade deadline. However, as of Wednesday afternoon it is still unclear what, if anything, the Blazers are going to do.

Sources say the Bobcats turned down a Blazers offer for Gerald Wallace Wednesday afternoon. Sources also say the Vince Carter-to-the-Blazers talk has cooled considerably.

If Wallace is out and the Blazers are cooling to Carter, that puts the most likely Blazers trade scenario with Milwaukee for Richard Jefferson. The teams have previously discussed swapping Jefferson and Luke Ridnour for LaFrentz and Travis Outlaw.

While there has been significant chatter around the league Wednesday afternoon that Portland was closing in on a deal for Jefferson, sources from both teams insist that it isn’t true. In fact, a Bucks source told ESPN.com that Milwaukee hasn’t heard from the Blazers in a while.

Another source conceded on Wednesday afternoon that there’s now a chance the Blazers might not do anything before the trade deadline. Instead they would take the savings from LaFrentz’s contract and try to make a deal in free agency this summer. While the Blazers won’t be flush with cash, they should have somewhere between $7-9 million in room depending on where the cap comes in.

That' just you trying to not be a homer again

Ya gotta pick and choose when ya be a contrarian, and not make it the default reaction.

Tons of national people think he’s great too, it’s not too crazy to think Blazer fans love him for totally changing the franchise.

That was a Chad Ford rumor, not a fan rumor. Ryan Schwan tried to take the “KP is overrated” to Kelly Dwyer too, and it got poo poo’d. It ain’t just Blazer fans.

Its silly to say he is way "overrated"

If he doesn’t use RLEC, considering we don’t know how are why he ain’t using it.

It sounds like a hissy fit, saying “WELL IF HE DOESN’T USE IT HE IS WAY OVERRATED AND NOT VERY GOOD”, when everything he has done during his short career directly contradicts that statement.

Do Blazer fans think Roy walks on water? That KP is God? Yeah.

Do they think it LITERALLY? No. Well, maybe for KP.

He did a lot with just a little, and some spending from above. It’s not like we’re pimping Hornet’s GM Bowen’s accomplishment’s when he’s only drafted Paul and overpaid role players.

by Mortimer on Feb 18, 2009 3:36 PM PST up reply actions

KP has made 4 impressive moves

1) The Roy trade
2) The Zbo dump which led to the Rudy pick (via trade exception deal with PHX)
3) The Batum pick
4) The Bayless maneuver

The LMA trade was ok, I liked it at the time, but LMA really isn’t that much better than Thomas (LMA is a lot better on O, Thomas is a lot better on D). I’d rather have LMA but its not the steal Blazer fans believe it is.

The Roy trade is KP’s only real home run.

He's said nothing really out of the ordinary, nor anything that is wrong

Getting Fernandez was easy because Phoenix has given their picks away to anyone who’s come calling. Getting Aldridge was essentially trading prospect for prospect. Signing Webster and Outlaw to fair-market deals isn’t a huge coup, not all teams are run by John Paxson and Chris Wallace.

Kevin Pritchard has done a very good job of building a playoff team. But, a lot is hinging on Greg Oden becoming a star. It’s just the way the team is constructed right now.

by Cablinasian on Feb 18, 2009 3:50 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, everything rides on Oden

I dunno though, anyone could have had Fernandez, and even Roy back then— those lottery picks were as cheap as those things get.

KP needs a few more years to know whether he’s on a hot streak that he can’t duplicate, or truly a very good GM. As of now, it looks great.

If Oden works out, though, he can ride that hot streak to the moon and back, so maybe we’ll never know the TRUE answer.

(I think the way he has creatively found trades, accepted new-age stats, and the hard work he puts in will make him keep being a good GM).

Rule #1 of nitpicking is to get it right.

by douglast on Feb 18, 2009 3:52 PM PST up reply actions

There are many reasons why it could.

 - adding Wallace, Jefferson, even Carter is likely to make Portland only marginally better. It’s not a case of adding in the new guy’s ppg, PER, etc to the team total and it equaling a better team. There is even a possibility it could have a negative effect, as the existing players and the new guy are not familiar with each other and/or the addition changes rotations, minutes, etc, and possibly disrupts team dynamics and chemistry. That is not sure to happen, but it could and it has to be factored in.

 - SF is only an issue right now because Webster is out. In other words you are basically trading to fill a temporary need. After this year you have your young starter locked up with a very reasonable contract, an even younger guy with great promise just off his rookie season and a vet with 2 or more years at $10 mil or more per, all playing the same position. That is not exactly the description of a pressing need to make a trade now.

 - we don’t really know exact details of what offers are being discussed. From the rumors, most seem to involve more than just trading Raef straight up for a player we might want. Details like what sort of bad contract we might have to take back, or what other assets do we have to include. Those are the sort of details that are important in evaluating the value between the $12 + million Raef’s deal might represent now and the $8 – $9 million it would represent over the summer.

 - as already pointed out, there appears to be an option to re-sign Raef and include him in a deal. If that is the case, we theoretically don’t lose any value on him by waiting until the summer. We just have to find a team that thinks one year of Raef at $12 mil (or more) is preferable to 2+ years of the guy we want.

The bottom line is that there are multiple options available to Pritchard. The effect of that is he doesn’t have to make a trade unless it is exactly the one he wants. It’s worth repeating – KP does not HAVE to make a deal. Anyone thinking that it would be a mistake not to make a deal before the deadline either has not looked at the bigger picture or believes that trades are the best part of basketball. (Which is fine. To each his own.)

After our pick of Oden vs. Durant, I would say this trade deadline is the next significant moment in the current Blazers Era. If we get a key player, it will really have to be our last piece of the puzzle. If we don’t, we’ll need to get that person via free agency or trade in the off-season (it won’t be in the draft).

I feel pretty strongly that there will never be another situation where so many factors align to give us a great chance to acquire a key player without giving up significant value.

I am skeptical that we can get a better player in the off-season.

not so sure

the changing fiscal realities of the NBA right now may mean that cost-cutting owners and GMs put people on the market this summer that aren’t right now – especially for playoff teams.

Rule #1 of nitpicking is to get it right.

Also

If they lower the Cap, more people could be in sell mode during the draft (depending when they would lower the cap). Anyone know when something like that would take place?

I totally agree with you

This is definitely one of those big defining moments for the Blazers. If we don’t move this piece then… I don’t know. I definitely feel like we’ve let an opportunity slip by.

But then again, KP would make a move it will make us better. If none of the options available make us a better team, that it could definitely be in our interest to let this come off of our books. I mean what can you do if there is nothing that will significantly make us better, as an option? Maybe the RLEC is right in the wrong neighborhood, too much money to get back a only decent player, and the teams who have the players we’re targetting don’t need the money enough. eesh alright I am going to get back to pretending to work.

From the back of Travis Outlaw's Franz card: Travis leads the team in monstrous thunder dunks, wins awards for post game interviews, and often gets extra points for degree of difficulty.

trade exception thought

We are friends with SA so KP uses the trade exception to bring Ime Udoka back to play small forward for the remainder of the year and saves SA a few bucks
just a thought

SA needs rotation players

They aren’t just giving away Udoka for cap relief, not when there’s still a chance at the Finals.

Just a hint: Think about which other teams were interested in landing Salmons (see ESPN, Amick and others)

Some of our direct competitors were rumored to be chasing Salmons, and now he is going to Chicago. So a very minor deal from our side could have a pretty big indirect benefit, independent of what we get out of it in terms of players and other assets.

That said, I still have hope for a bigger one.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is the end of the moves before the deadline

KP is a product of the way the Spurs handle things. Here is what TimmyD said about the Spurs efforts to get Vince:

“No offense to Vince, obviously he’s an excellent player,” Tim Duncan told a website Sunday. "We’d love to have him. But to give up most of our team to add one guy, I don’t think that’s the way you want to go.

“It’s a long season and we have a lot of guys who have been here a long time and understand the way we want to play. Just to insert one new piece and try to teach him in half a season the way we want to play isn’t the way that we work.”

While the Blazers wouldn’t have to gut the team to make a the numbers work in a Vince trade, with the Blazers trying to emulate the culture of the Spurs, it seems likely that the Blazers aren’t going to switch things up on the fly.

I hope both he and Frye can get dealt to a team they can PLAY for, so that they can earn their next deal.

I really do worry about that for guys like them, who have talent but no room to play.

This is the best thing that can happen for Ike, aside from going somewhere with NO power forwards. The Kings have Thompson and Hawes, though Hawes is a center.

Trade exception?

I understand the mechanics of the trade exception — what I don’t understand is how we pulled off the Ike for Ruffin deal in the first place. 125% + 100,000 doesn’t cut it, and since both teams are over the cap, how did we do it?

is that it?

my understanding of the CBA is that you couldn’t just throw in a million bucks and call it the same as trading a player making a million bucks — the actual salaries themselves have to match up to that 125% + 100k if both teams are over the cap, I thought. but I’m no expert…

It doesn't go on a player to player basis

So I’m assuming the whole package including Diogu chi received was within that 125%+100,000 while the Blazers cap situation doesn’t matter because they are bringing back less salary

by cbdolphin on Feb 18, 2009 4:51 PM PST reply actions

reported it as a second, independent deal, which theoretically means that it IS a player to player basis….unless they misreported it, which is entirely possible at this point. I’m so confused. :( let’s all be thankful that I don’t have TP’s job.

so I just plugged in a potential trade?

Since Ruffin’s numbers aren’t available yet in the trade machine, I substituted another Blazers contract in this deal and I have to emphasize this emphatically. THIS WAS DONE SOLELY FOR THE FINANCIAL EQUIVALENT OF MARK RUFFINS TRADE VALUE, IN NO WAY AM I PROMOTING A DEAL THAT GIVES BRANDON ROY TO ANY OTHER TEAM. I HAD TO USE HIS CONTRACT PRICE BECAUSE IT WAS THE CLOSEST ON THE ROSTER TO THE VALUE OF RUFFINS EXPIRING CONTRACT. Okay this is a potential second tier to portland’s dealings today that sends RLEC, C. Frye, Sergio Rodriguez, Shavlik Randolph and M. Ruffin to phoenix for wait for it… Shaquille O’neal. Now I would like to say that over the years I have not been the biggest fan of shaq, actually he has only really bothered me when he plays for a western conference team. However nobody can deny his greatness as a player, and while this doesn’t do much for us in the short term to shore up our small forward dilemma, it does bring a player who is probably the best available center in the league as well as being an incredible mentor for one Gregory Oden. Given the fact that Shaq will probably retire in the next two years it also does not keep us on the hook for long, at which point Oden would potentially gained an enormous leg up in his development. And really who would we be giving up? Four guys who for the most part aren’t or won’t see the court for any substantial minutes this year or next, and Sergio. Which opens the floor for Bayless to get more minutes. I don’t know I’m flip flopping on this one, but really we don’t give up much and we don’t have to deal with that much in the short term either, considering Shaq is probably on his way out.

Update

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?page=TradeTalkRoundup-090218

Chris Broussard: It looks like it’s Portland or bust for Vince Carter, according to a person with knowledge of the trade talks surrounding New Jersey’s star forward.

"It’s looking like it’s going to be head-to-head between Carter and Richard Jefferson," the person said. "I think Jefferson’s going to be the one who goes to Portland."

While Carter may be the better player, Portland’s concerned with Carter’s age (he turned 32 last month) and the three years, $51 million left on his contract (though only $4 million of the $18 million in his final season is guaranteed).

The Nets have their own concerns about Carter’s contract and that’s why they’ve been shopping him. They’ve spoken with San Antonio, Houston and Dallas but nothing has come of those talks.

Discussions with San Antonio have broken down because the Spurs, while willing to part with Bruce Bowen and Fabricio Oberto, are not willing to include Roger Mason Jr. and George Hill in the deal.

Houston would have traded Tracy McGrady for Carter, but McGrady’s announcement that he’ll have season-ending microfracture surgery killed those chances.

"There will be no Vince deal," another source close to the situation said, referring to the Rockets.

The Los Angeles Clippers, who since training camp have regretted signing Baron Davis to a five-year, $65 million deal, have tried to get involved, proposing a three-team move that would send Davis to Houston, McGrady to New Jersey and Carter to LA. But no one but the Clippers liked that deal.

If Carter doesn’t go to Portland, will the Nets send him wherever they can?

"I’d be surprised if they did a straight salary dump, but at the end of the day that might be best for their organization," said one source.

As for Milwaukee’s Jefferson, it’s far from a done deal that he’ll join the Blazers. The Bucks would love to send Jefferson to Portland in a deal that would bring back Raef LaFrentz’s expiring contract, but another executive close to the talks said, "It’s not dead but there’s nothing happening right now."

The Bucks’ talks with San Antonio about Jefferson have stalled as well.

Portland’s telling teams it has 15 different players it can get for LaFrentz. But many executives around the league are skeptical, saying the Blazers like to talk about deals but are always hesitant to pull the trigger on anything significant.
