Why Fernando Martin?

It's complicated to explain what means Fernando Martin for Spanish Basketball fans, but I'm going to try to explain it. I hope you get the picture. Sorry for my poor English.

Star-divide

I am not going to write a lot about his life, so maybe you should read his wikipedia page first (although it's not very extensive in english). The obvious part is that he was the first Spaniard to play in the NBA, but there is more. Spain is a country where there seems to be only one sport: soccer. For instance, when Rafa Nadal defeated Fernando Verdasco in an epic semifinal (+5 hours) of the Australian Open most-read Sports newspaper dedicated his front page to Barcelona's 5,000 goal scored by Messi (ok it was a milestone, but c'mon!). When Nadal defeated Federer in the longest final of the Australian Open (almost 5 hours, I think) the front page was dedicated to Faubert, a mediocre soccer player who had been traded to Real Madrid. I couldn't remember his name so I googled "Real Madrid ficha desconocido" (Real Madrid signs unknow) to write this post, seven of the first 10 results (overall 199,000) were about Faubert (who isn't even a role player).

He started to play in the ACB with Estudiantes in 1980, next year, when he was only 19 he became a Starter and his team finished 2nd after F.C. Barcelona in the championship. He signed for Real Madrid (where he played the next 5 years) and that summer and got a spot in the Spanish National Team.

Another milestone in Fernando Martin's career was LA Olympic Games in 1984. As the underdogs, Spanish National team defeated Yugoslavia in the semis and earned a spot in the gold medal game vs. the US Basketball. They were totally crushed by Michael Jordan, Pat Ewing and co. (Here you have the ed2k link of the game, the comments are in Spanish), but those guys (Fernando Martin, Juan Antonio San Epifanio "Epi", Juan Antonio Corbalan, Fernando Romay...) achieved that a country where people coudn't spell the word "Basketball" pay attention to their National Team.

After a successful career in Spain Fernando was signed by the Blazers as a Free Agent. Suffering several injuries, he never could show his real basketball, even if he were able to play at his best level, he wouldn't be a hall of famer, but he was a pioneer, he had nuts and showed a path that other players use after some years like Gasol, Calderon or Rudy, and we give him the well-earned credit for that.

After his disappointing year in the Blazers, he returned to Spain where he played for the Real Madrid until his death in a tragic car accident in December 3rd, 1989. To understand the huge impact of Martin's death in basketball fans I will translate to you the words of Piti Hurtado, a Spanish coach in the LEB league (consider it as the NCAA in USA) in a Martin's tribute video:

My friend Emilio came into my home one Sunday afternoon, when there weren't video game consoles and hours went by slowly. He told me Fernando Martin had died.

We sit back, silent. Basketball engaged many teenagers thanks to guys like this.

And here's the video:

Fernando was enshrined in the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2007 and his #10 jersey was retired in the Real Madrid.

Thank you Rudy for putting a tear in our eyes this Saturday (Sunday in Spain), and thank you Fernando for all what you did. Rest in peace.

Great post

Even without the TNT guys telling me who Fernando Martin was, I had a hunch it was had something to do with Spain’s entry into the NBA, as Rudy, the first international slam dunk participant ever, seems like a loyal guy.

Zero props to TNT (Kenny Smith, you’re failing me) for disrespecting Rudy throughout the dunk contest and not being in the know about the throwback jersey.

The whole weekend was awful

That was the worst announcing I’ve ever heard for a major sporting event, no question. From the constant jabbering about LeBron in the rookie game, to the GOD AWFUL Miller family in the dunk contest, to Kenny Smith’s blatant racist remarks. It was pathetic, to say the least.

As angry as you're comments sound, when I review them in my mind I realize they are correct.

Racism was obvious when one thinks about it.
What if I started talking about the childish attempts of Mexicans, while we watched them play golf?!? <= racism

Rigging the dunk contest happens every year right? The funny thing is that while the big names don’t want to do it because it’s not rigged enough, the less known would stay away because their only part is to lose in a rigged game on national T.V. Sad stuff. Even sadder when someone wears the revered jersey of a deceased countryman AND people make racist jokes AND people obviously rig it blatently.

Lebron happily hogging the camera (the NBA instigating it) when it is other’s time to shine was sad too.

The guy on the radio (Jim Durham)

called him Fernando Martin, as if he were Kevin Martin’s brother. Obviously the director of the broadcast got into Durham’s earphones and said (Mar-TEEN! Mar-TEEN!) so after saying it incorrectly twice, he finally figured it out.

I think Fernando played for Jack Ramsey. Maybe Ramsey is the one who corrected Durham (silently) since they were working together. – Elgin

One quibble

I think Smith’s bias is against the Spanish, not whites in general. I suspect he’s enraged that Rudy and his teammates had the nerve to nearly beat the exhalted “Redeem Team.”

Having said that, Kenny Smith’s bias was so blatant and unrelenting that I’ll have difficulty enjoying his commentary again. Not that I take the dunk contest seriously.

To be biased against Spanish would be racism

It’s not like the races are “Red & Yellow, Black & White.”

If China had almost beat the “Redeem Team” and Kenny Smith had said the same thing about some random Chinese dunker, would that be racism?

But while defending the value of a concept “racism,” I remember that we are on the same side: Rudy’s.

".. is gumby an alien?"

by staylost on Feb 16, 2009 6:55 PM PST up reply actions

"...amateurism of Spain" was a racist & xenophobic comment.

To simply be biased against the people of the nation of Spain is, quite clearly, both racism and xenophobia.

To use the M.W. online dictionary we can see that race is:
“2 a: a family, tribe, people, or nation belonging to the same stock b: a class or kind of people unified by shared interests, habits, or characteristics”

Racism simply means the act of being biased or prejudiced against such a group. M.W. again:
“2 : racial prejudice or discrimination”

Xenophobia, definition is pretty obvious but (M.W.):
“fear and hatred of strangers or foreigners or of anything that is strange or foreign”

To be clear I do not think any of the broadcast team are racists, but both the environment they created and the words that came out of their mouth were.

Hi there, first time poster although I’ve been reading your blog for a while, enjoying your thoughtful analysis.

I just want to thank you for this small tribute to Fernando Martin. Even as a fan of Real Madrid’s archrival FC Barcelona, I respected and admired Martin, and his duels with Barcelona’s Audie Norris are legendary and yet unsurpassed in my basketball memory. Norris himself wept like a child at Fernando’s funeral.

That was a tragic loss, and followed not very long after (if memory serves) by the death in another car accident of Drazen Petrovic, another of Europe’s greatest (and former player of Real Madrid and Portland as well).

Greetings from Spain and congratulations for keeping an eye on and acknowledging non-NBA basketball (where amazing also happens).

I would have loved to have seen some video of Fernando dueling it out with the Atomic Dog. Were they teammates on the Blazers? – Elgin

On a lighter note

Martin was briefly mentioned in the “Rad Bad Blazers” video that can be found on youtube

I saw him play in the MC during summer league and the regular season. He was a heady player but lacked the athleticism of the American players (partly die to injury, partly doe to the fact that all European players of that era were more mechanical in that era…Georgi Glouchov, etc) When the ‘86-87 season was over Martin was gone, and his premature death didn’t receive nearly the attention that Drazen Petrovic’s did in PDX

Great information

Thanks for giving us some perspective on Fernando Martin!

TNT truly did not give the moment the solemn respect it deserved. And since TNT had the graphic prepared explaining why Rudy had MARTIN on the back of his jersey, the announcers should have known as well and acted accordingly.

Thanks again for the context of what Martin means to Spain, and to a young guy like Rudy.

I wish they had mentioned the Blazers connection

during the Broadcast. It could have been really cool, if marv albert or someone else had been doing the broadcast. Saying something like

“The Blazers have had a long history with players from Spain, signing the first Spanish player to a contract in the NBA. Fernando Martin was the first Spanish player to travel across the ocean, and largely is responsible for inspiring players like Rudy to take up the sport of Basketball in a country that is dominated by Soccer. While Rudy is known for his highlight reel dunks and flashy passes, his true love for the sport is grounded in a man who played the game simply, with substance and with skill. A man who is not known very well in the United States and Rudy has decided to use this opportunity to show the world how much Fernando Martin meant to his home country of Spain.”

From the back of Travis Outlaw's Franz card: Travis leads the team in monstrous thunder dunks, wins awards for post game interviews, and often gets extra points for degree of difficulty.

I recently took a step back from hoops to reevaluate what exactly I loved about the game

and perhaps learn why I’m so fanatical about the Blazers. Sure the team has had serious ups and downs and recently dealing with some mediocre play sent me over the edge. I vowed to take a break from basketball and the Blazers but I knew the entire time I would secretly watch a little bit here and there and would not miss the dunk contest this year for anything. We watched and I almost cried (seriously) when Rudy stripped off his jersey to show the Martin threads. I was amazed at the amount of respect that showed and it really emphasized Rudy’s knowledge of the history of this team, Spain’s basketball history, and NBA history as well.

This post is great because it partly encompasses the reason I love this team. Thank you for posting this.

Many folks around here—maybe a majority—would trade Brandon Roy for Kobe Bryant in a heartbeat. This includes many who accept that Bryant committed a brutal sexual assault. Personally, I kinda like the idea of rooting for a team of guys I like—guys who I feel happy for when they win and bad for when they lose.

I lost that feeling during the Jailblazer days. I’ve had it back ever since Roy & Aldridge came aboard, and GO, Rudy, and the rest have only added to it.

That he chose this very thoughtful idea to demonstrate his respect for the Spanish basketball tradition and ran with it was great. I bow to Rudy for that decision.

Sad that two of the TNT announcers bungled it by prancing their lack of knowledge to make lame jokes. If you have no idea how to comment what you are seeing while on air, maybe next time just be quiet and let the guy with the notes talk to not embarrass yourself.

More on Kenny Smith

rec. Excellent post, Sophia.

The following observation may have been hashed out many times, and it’s a dangerous one, but here goes.

Kenny’s comparison, when watching Rudy, was with Rex Chapman. I sensed then, and have usually sensed, lingering resentment toward European players on the part of African American players of Kenny’s generation. Maybe its unconscious or maybe its my imagination.

I have always wondered about this, ever since the Sabonis years. I imagine someone has written about it; if so, who do you recommend?

by chnews on Feb 16, 2009 2:43 PM PST reply actions

The comparison sucked too

Chapman threw it behind his back, end of comparison.

Chapman didn’t use the backboard and he threw down with 2 hans.
Rudy did use the backboard (a lot tougher) and he threw down with 1 hand like woah.

More than Black American basketball players.

How many star American whites are there these days? Zero? Versus how many Euro stars? It’s not like the Euro stars have taken over the league, especially when compared to Black American stars… but the Euros have taken the place of the White American for the NBA’s quota of good White players.

I think many Black NBA players are skeptical of most any white dude’s talents and skill until they are firmly established. There have been plenty of Adam Morrison’s trumpeted up by the media to be Great White Saviors, and I’m sure other (black) players don’t appreciate how much more attention those dudes get. Subconscious or not, the majority of the NBA will somewhat resent the attention a white player gets for being white.

And Rudy hasn’t established himself enough to a guy like Kenny Smith.

It doesn’t make it right, what he said was especially stupid and insulting.

disrespected

My wife and I couldn’t believe the total disrespect showed by the Kenny Smith, TNT and the NBA during the dunk contest. To suggest thtat Rudy couldn’t get anyone from the Blazers to pass the ball for him was wrong. The score that Rudy got was terrible and deserved a much better score since it was much harder than any of the other dunks even attempted. To take a pass off the back of the backboard and then reverse dunk the ball, unbelieveable.

I can’t believe the disrespect for all Portland’s players, even Broy, not only during the All Star weekend but the entire season not only by TNT but the enitre NBA organization.

What's kind of comical...

is that Smith had said that Rudy couldn’t complete that dunk with a Nerf hoop. Then when Gasol finally made an adequate pass and Rudy DID complete the dunk, Smith said, “I’m still not jumping out of my seat.” This while practically everyone in the arena went nuts. Because it’s obvious (from all the wonderful BE affiliates sharing my sentiments) they did not give either Rudy, the first Spaniard in the dunk contest and first rookie to hit a triple in 31 consecutive games (really close to hitting 1 in every one), or Martin, the first Spaniard in the NBA, the respective respect they deserve.

Are you serious

With what they let get by in the NBA *…I just assumed the ref missed the call. It would be nice to know if that is a travel according to a strict interpretation of the rule.

  • The one I don’t like is the dribble behind the back, where the guy has to look to find the ball, this is a carry almost every time and it’s never called.
I don’t remember the game (it wasn’t the Blazers) the guy (NBA) gets the defensive rebound at the free throw line, takes two dribbles and dunks it at the other end of the court – he could have been called for traveling twice on the same play. No call was made. Throwing the ball out in front of you so that you have to catch up to it should be an automatic call.

Awesome

I read the Karl piece on TrueHoop earlier today, and to get even more perspective on Martin is great. Truly a unique piece of Blazer history, albeit muted a bit due to the tragic end to his life.

Rudy did far better than his score.

When he finally nailed that Gasol pass off the backboard, it was a thing of beauty.
It was a windmill dunk that started as a horizontal windmill and ended as a vertical windmill that was put down with force. All with one hand, and I doubt there are very many who could have put that down, let alone with the artistry Rudy did it with.

Rudy’s tribute got lost in what was without question a preplanned circus show.
Did you see Rudy during the pre-fest song and dance? He was just not into the hype of this event (and it truly was hype from start to finish). He just wanted to go out and dunk the ball to the best of his ability.
That’s one of the reasons why we love Rudy, because he has a heart of gold. His tribute was heartfelt as a result, and deserved much more.

It was obvious to me that the scores were given so as to not accidentally let the wrong person into the next round. The Nate step-up dunk off the back of Superman was all symbolism, and SUCKED score wise as a good dunk. Next year I’m just going to read a comic book, and skip the circus act.
If I’m wrong about this, then the only other option is the judges were blind as bats.

I just hope that Rudy, you, and others realize, that not everybody agreed to the hype of this event, nor to the outcome.

Thank you for a great post.

Thank you for this post.

I was extremely disappointed and surprised that the NBA didn’t use this opportunity to extend goodwill to Spain. Not only did they miss out on a fantastic narrative that could have drawn even more Spanish fans to the NBA, they allowed their commentators to say some crazy things without any comment at all. Kevin Harlan seemed to be trying to change the direction of the conversation at the time but Kenny and Reggie were hell bent on revealing their xenophobia. It was quite strange for a league that has been working to expand its fanbase across the globe for the past 20 years. The silence is deafening.

To be fair, I think that Kenny and Reggie's xenophobia was born out of white trash ignorance

Someone earlier framed the event well when they compared it to show wrestling. The same weird jingoism permeated the event.

by staylost on Feb 16, 2009 7:23 PM PST up reply actions

How is that better?

I mean that as a genuine question and not a snide remark. The xenophobia was planned so it is somehow ok? Or it explains why the NBA hasn’t recoginized the comments were off base?

Well, I think ignorance and disbelief are better than animosity and hate in this case

Your response is gladdening. Something is obviously wrong, and whatever it is, it needs changed.

".. is gumby an alien?"

by staylost on Feb 16, 2009 10:32 PM PST up reply actions

True...

But doesn’t ignorance and disbelief generally lead to animosity and hate. I mean, we are talking about a dunk contest so I am not trying to get incensed or anything. I was just truly disappointed that what could have been a moment that was special for Spain was not only ignored and allowed to be what it was for them, but was mocked out of ignorance by two guys who should have had some clue as to what Rudy was trying to do and just let him have his moment.

I mean somebody voted him into the event so somebody wanted to see him there even if they had no interest. I am not even asking for them to acknowledge that Rudy belonged there so much as wondering why they wouldn’t shut up and let the moment play out before they provided commentary devoid of any knowledge of what was actually happening.

Even a fool seems wise when he remains silent.

I agree entirely and hope that there is a change in the way the NBA conducts itself.

I felt embarrased during the dunk competition because I have long been proud that the NBA is the best basketball in the world. Its like you were proud of the NBA and then found out it was a breeding ground for Nazism.

Not at all.

In fact Nazi racism against Jews in Germany started with much the same tone and with much the same organizational approval. Instead of skinny legs it would be a long nose. No one would come out and say Jews were the scum of the earth at first. Powerful groups would simply create an atmosphere of hostility by pointing out how different or disappointing Jews were. It was these small beginnings that fostered the public sentiment later allowing more extreme forms of discrimination. I wouldn’t have brought it up if the TNT broadcast hadn’t completely reminded me of early Nazi broadcasts I’d heard in the Museum of Tolerance (as made famous by South Park)..

These guys made a mistake in a bad context. I wonder how many mistakes I could make with a microphone in my hand. Probably a lot. Well, I hope this put some pressure on the refs, so they compensate with good calls for Rudy :) Let do it an international scandal.

Maybe but it is not Rudy's place to pull Kenny's and Reggies heads out of their butts.

Not that is even possible for that to happen. I suspect that their heads have been there so long that even surgery would be unsuccessful.

Someone must have known

They had the graphic ready… so apparently Rudy told someone unless TNT magically pulled up an obscure graphic in a matter of seconds. TNT may have dropped the ball on discussing it with the announcers, but that doesn’t make what they said any better.

Reggie's "animosity" I can understand.

He has probably gotten wind of the comparisons of him to Rudy, and that’s why he doesn’t like him. I’m pretty sure Reggie was never invited to the dunk contest.
