Why was rudy eliminated?

So rudy didn't make out of the first round.  It was obvious because he ran out of time becasue pau gasol tried to be too fancy with his passes.  Why do you think he didn't make it out of the first round?

It was fixed

It was always going to be Nate vs Dwight. Pathetic

by Sabonis4Ever on Feb 14, 2009 8:08 PM PST reply actions

So true

But it’s not that the NBA fixed it, it’s that the judges had their minds made up without NBA league officials input.

Actually

The Judges were actually undercover refs; Steve Javie, Jake O’Donnell and crew.

by Dmartyparty on Feb 15, 2009 12:01 AM PST up reply actions

Yeah come on now

Dwight vs Nate was predetermined. Smith and Rudy were just there because.

Nate did NOTHING impressive. I could dunk off of someone’s back. I’ve met guys 5’9 who can do a double pump reverse. It’s just bad bad bad.

Best dunk of the night was Dwight’s off the side of the backboard, that takes some finesse.
Second best was Rudy’s 2nd one, just a shame it took them so long.

The problem is, if Rudy’s 2nd dunk was on first try and he got a 48 or so, judges woulda just given Nate 9s on his 2nd one to make sure he advanced.

P.S. Kenny Smith is the worst commentator in the history of Sports.

Yeah

He also insulted Rudy’s tribute AFTER they discussed their love of NBA history earlier.

Guess the first Spanish player in the NBA isn’t worthwhile history… I mean it’s not like Spain is a major player in the international market or anything. (Sarcasm in case anyone missed it.)

Kenny is the weak link of the TNT crew

He’s so condescending for being a marginal player……I like when he told Reggie, during the 3 pt contest, that he knew basketball players, as if Reggie didn’t, and that there was no way Daquean could win.

They should have left the "behind the back" from Pau away

That made it much more complicated and didn’t really add anything to the high complexity of the dunk by Rudy. Just toss it off the back like they did when he stuck it.

The cake is a lie. Trade the cake!

by Norsktroll on Feb 14, 2009 8:35 PM PST up reply actions

In other words, I think it was right to penalize him somewhat for needing so many attempts

And he should have paused on the first one after his costume change a bit. If Dwight can take minutes for his props, Rudy can take 30 seconds while TNT explains who he is honoring. This way the camera cut to his toss at the very last second.

But overall I was pretty impressed by his dunks. He did well.

That dunk was horrible. Not only was it off Chandler’s back, it looked uncoordinated. Tom Chambers gave Rudy and 8 for his dunk from behind the backboard and Nate a 9 for looking like a Jr. Higher jumping off a buddies back.

better dunk on a 14’ rim next year, or throw it down from the 3pt. line, or i might never watch the dunk competition again.

And about the supposed 12' of the second hoop

NBA regulation hoop is 10’ high, nba regulation backboard is 42" high. the hoop is 2" above the bottom of the board, so there are 40" from the top of the board to the hoop (assuming height of the rim itself is negligible). In order for the 2nd hoop to be 12 feet in height, the rim of the second one heeds to be only 16 inches below the top of the board on the first one. In other words, to be 12’ high, the first board has to be 1/3 above the 2nd rim and 2/3 below it. It did not look that high to me. We’ll have to see some still shots when they get posted but it looked more like 11’ 4" ~ish to me.

Throw trout in there and let him dunk blindfolded on a 13 footer IMO.

didn't clyde dunk a 12'7" hoop?

It wasn’t in competition, but Dwight was acting like it’s never happened before. I’m amazed Dwight got a perfect score for that one. A lot of players could do a basic two-handed dunk on a tall hoop (just like a lot of players could jump off a guy on his knees and dunk).
Talk about originality – when that dunk by Nate has been exhausted in high school gyms you know it isn’t worthy of the all-star dunk contest. C’mon, when I was in 8th grade we’d look for a picnic table or trampoline, and the next obvious thing was trying to jump off your buddy. Ooooh, that one really came out of nowhere, Nate. Where do you come up with these wacky dunk ideas?
But, just like Clyde getting hosed when he dunked from the free throw line without dribbling, Rudy got hosed in this contest. I still don’t think he’s a better dunker than Robinson/Howard. However, based on his two 1st round dunks, he was the first or second best dunker on the court last night.

Howard had NO BUSINESS being there in the second round, he had one good dunk, you might as well bring Luc Longley back for next years competition.
Lets look at next years slam dunk contest: 1.Chris Kamen 2.Andris Biedrins 3.Dirk Nowitski 4.David Lee.
Howard was not impressive this year, he has been living off of that (almost) dunk from last year, at least he didn’t win.

I was honestly disapointed.......

I wasn’t disappointed in Rudy, but with Sergio, Greg and a little with Roy. I’ve never seen a player seem as isolated throughout an all star weekend. To start, at the rookie sophomore game Greg was not sitting or talking with Rudy. Then I think this is the first time I’ve ever seen a player have to use a assist man in the dunk contest from an opposing team, especially the L@kers. Someone from our team needed to be there helping him out, if Sergio can’t help with this, why is he important to this team anymore. Honestly. I really think Greg or Roy could have also been there if not to help, then at least to cheer him on. I still love all of the guys, but really why couldn’t we have shown a little teamwork here.

It was about Spain...

The NBA missed a golden opportunity to expand its goodwill overseas. The comments from Reggie Miller and Kenny Smith revealed their lack of knowledge of the international game and the pride that Rudy might have in representing his country in the slam dunk contest. It was embarassing to listen to them continue to go on and on as if there was no connection between Pau and Rudy and act as if they didn’t belong there.
I felt the same about the way they treated JR Smith too, for different reasons of course, and I don’t even like that guy.

It seemed like the prevailing attitude

was that Rudy didn’t deserve to be in the dunk contest. You heard LeBron James during the rookie-soph game say he thought Westbrook deserved to be in the dunk contest instead of Rudy. Well I think that attitude was not only held by LeBron.

But Rudy did not help himself by making that setup pass so difficult. Could’ve been a lot simplier pass and still be a spectacular dunk.

Roy, I dont know what his deal is.

As for Oden not sitting next to Rudy, I think Greg sat at the way end because he wasn’t playing. Plus lets keep in mind that Rudy doesn’t speak English all that well, that he can have ongoing convos with his teammates all game

Roy's Leadership: Not Seeing It

Brandon is a great individual player. He makes big plays with the ball in his hands. He is in control of his emotions at all times. But what does he do to make his teammates better? He refuses to share the basketball and push the tempo to the detriment of his teammates. He doesn’t want to play off the ball and set up his teammates. He is undoubtedly a great player, but he is not yeat a great TEAM player, and until he learns or is willing or is coached by Nate to play more of a 5-man game, this team will not progress as it should.

I see it. Roy is a team guy but I think he's getting swept up in keeping his all-star/leader status

It’s hard not to do that. His team has one near all-star after another, or will soon, and I want to see him fully embrace the team and not be afraid to average under twenty a season. He is the man but can’t be afraid to let others shine.

He plays team ball but a good basketball mind can see when a player starts doing things that keep him on top to the slight detriment of the team.

I also think he’ll get over this. I’ll have a talk with him.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
