Rudy Rookie/Sophomore Game Reaction Thread
[picture courtesy of Bright Side of the Sun]
By request, here's an open thread to share thoughts about Rudy's Rookie/Sophomore game performance.
Rudy's line: 14 points, 4-8 shooting, 4-4 from distance, 2-4 FT, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal. His +14 in 22 minutes led all players on both teams.

Rudy the true MVP Thread
Glad the conversation about Rudy and his excellent play can commence

Durant is a scoring machine
But if we have Rudy, why Durant?
I mean we already havea lots of scorers(jumpshooters), to say we should have drafted Durant is a little bit unrealistic, cause building a team is always a long-term plan.
I know that KD can penetrate, but you can tell his first step is not that quick, and KD’s weakness is that he doesn’t post people up that often, big guards or 3s often do that(Jordan, Roy), it opens their games and makes them effective.

Rudy played well
He represented the Blazers nicely.

You are a shoe guy, what about KD’s shoes tonight? They are different. As a child of the 70’s I wonder if in 20 years people will laugh at them like they do now at the disco pants I used to wear.
For the record: I liked them.

did you mean you liked KD's shoes or your disco pants? :) :)
Disco pants .. leisure suits .. raccoon coats …
Mohawks .. Faux hawks .. No hawks (bald) ..
I think when we look back we might laugh at hair styles more than clothes!
haha
I liked KD’s shoes. The disco pants have long since disappeared from my wardrobe….

I'm disappointed that we didn't get a Spanish Connection.
That being said, I thought Rudy looked great in his limited minutes.
I wonder how much D-Wade had to do with actually coaching the game. Each team had an actual assistant coach, whom I assume would be calling most of the shots.

There was a minor one
where M Gasol ooped to Rudy, but Rudy was fouled hard and didn’t get it (but did get FT’s)

This game has me doubting KP for the first time.
My Oden worry level is high.
"I would never die for my beliefs because I might be wrong." -Bertrand Russell
Not at all.
It was an all-star event game in which NOBODY plays any defense. Did you see how many times Durant would get half a step on some guy and just have a clear lane to the basket? Or how many times when he shot a three pointer, nobody closed out on him or put a hand in his face? It was like he was shooting in practice out there.
If you are worried about Oden, the Rookie-Sophomore game is probably not the reason why you should be. Those guys are just out there to have some fun and put on a show for the fans.
Repost and some new thoughts
I think we saw one of the best games of the season for him. He facilitated the whole game for the rookies, did everything expected of him, hit many of his shots and not just from three, and always tried to bring his teammates in the game. I really liked watching him out there.
Oh, and did you notice his +/- in comparison to KD and EVERYONE else? I know, stupid stat for just one game, but here it seems to really tell the story of a good play.
I was not so happy with the way Wade “coached” the game for the rookies. Beasley was in very long. Of course he was pretty much the only forward on the team and scored quite a bit (Rudy mostly played the other one), but he also chucked a lot of outside shots that he just can’t hit yet. Same with Mayo, who played quite some ball hogging and didn’t even give Rose a chance to set him up. Marc Gasol was also having a good game with few plays run for him, but he hustled for his opportunities. At the beginning of the game Gasol and Lopez were outright dominating the paint, later not so much anymore. Can’t remember if Wade didn’t play them together later or what changed, but they just didn’t dominate the boards as much as in the first half. And Durant was having a field day against slower/smaller defenders, hitting some very pretty shots.
Annoying: The screaming children/girls. Loooong interviews with LeBron & Co during play. I wanted to learn more about the rookies and sophomores, not hear about Bron’s memories of his time when starting out in the league. Pau Gasol’s interview about his brother and his impressions of the young players was much better.
All in all a very nice game by both teams. I enjoyed watching that, and think the Blazers can be proud how Rudy represented them.

Oh, yeah!
I almost forgot about those kids. It was really cool that they got an opportunity to go, but they screamed every single time anything happened on the court. It was surreal; almost like we weren’t watching a real game.

They should have given the tickets to dedicated fans. I doubt they even knew who most of the players were.
Or do what real NBA teams do.
Stash them in the second or third level, amongst other fans instead of in one massive concentrated pack.

The announcers...
…wait there were none, other than the “LeBron James” show in the first half. Utterly ridiculous. And, the screaming kids, I thought my head was going to explode with that noise. If I wanted to hear kids scream I would have left my home office and went out to the front room of my house where my two youngest boys were grappling/fighting all night. That noise was just totally hard to listen to.
Rudy did good. Fun game to watch, albeit no Greg…. :-(

Oh, and the jerseys were pretty bad. I'm sorry for whoever designed them, but good intention not the same as good work
The numbers were completely misplaced – unless they tried them out on Yao and Dirk – and the names not legible. The colors were so so at best. Even the TNT announcers called them bad, which I’m sure was not what the NBA wanted.
The cake is a lie. Trade the cake!
Weren't they
tucking the numbers on the front of the jersey into their shorts? The jerseys looked like 1-2 sizes too big for all the players.

Air Rudy

(Uhm, don’t look now, but Durant’s arm looks skinny compared even to Rudy. But that’s a discussion for the KD thread)

To bring the chatter back to Rudy . . .
Am I imagining things, or has he added some muscle since this summer?
They put him on a strength and conditioning training program according to Breen, so maybe we can already see some results

He don't look as skinny soft as before
He’s looking more skinny-hard, but he’s got a ways to go still.
He’ll never be bulky, but wiry strong and ripped will be the way to go, and he’ll get there. It’ll also make him capable of penetrating more like he did in Europe (plus improving his ballhandling).
Glad to see Rudy is working out and looking stronger, unlike a certain fellow Spaniard teammate that I won’t call out by name (hint: his name rhymes with Rergio Sodriguez).

Good hops... 3rd game in 3 nights!!!
Hope he has springs left for the contest… although creativity may be his best option ;)
Hmmm.
I was unimpressed by Westbrook, Mayo, and Beasley. Apparently passing was optional.
Rudy, Lopez, and Gasol looked very good for the rookies. They were actually interested in playing a team game, which was nice. The rookies would have blown this open if there had been actual ball movement.
Instead, Westbrook was crossing people over and shooting crazy eighteen footers.
Beasly
did not impress me at all. Mayo was sort of OK.

For Kevin Durant's sake, I'm glad that he's at least surpassed his worst-case scenario.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uiXvNhXWHOc
In all seriousness, though, [Insert Name Here] might’ve been Durant’s closest comparison.
It’s really, really unfortunate that we’ll never know whether or not that’s the truth, although that’s life.
Your post made me realize
I have never, ever, seen Len Bias play before.
Why haven’t I? That’s strange to me.
I know he’s ’sposed to be good, but I have no idea why, how, or what he was good at. Hell, what position was he?
Mortimer
i saw len bias play at maryland vs the usual acc suspects, north carolina etc
he was a 6’8" SF who could always get his shot off, mostly i remember jumpers from the baseline, and there was one reverse alley-oop at a big point in a late-season game.
he seemed like he’d be a surefire NBA star. who knows, though? but he at least seemed in al thornton territory, maybe a little more reliable j.
ignacio
All these years, I thought he was a beefy, 6'11" center.
My memory lets me down again, like the time when… uh… ummm… never mind.
Since the half time Wade decided it was a game for selfish players.
Sergio + Rudy = 16
Sergio + Bayless = 16
Batum 8+8=16
I'm assuming they made a conscious effort to not play Rose or Rudy a lot
Because they played the night before, and both are in events tonight. Derrick just recently seemed to shake off some midseason exhaustion, I don’t care enough for a meaningless game to have him run ragged.
Vinny Del Negro interviewed for the job today. I mean come on! Nobody else thinks this is nuts?
