Shoals Reading/Bar Recap
The reading was nice, it must be weird to speak in front of so many blazer fans, or just people in general (especially for those brainy, writer/blogger dudes). It was nice to see Shoals talk off the cuff and riff a little bit where needed, funny, intelligent guy; the flavor you'd expect from freedarko, or the sporting blog.
There were so many people, I didn't really recognize any BEdgers, not that I know what most of you look like. I did recognize blazerfan1 and twiggs as I left, they were back in the recesses of the book aisle, I shot them a smile :-)
I had to take my girl home before going to the bar to look for Ben. I couldn't find Ben Golliver. There were some cute girls that were blazer fans that were looking for the "Blazers Edge party" at the bar too, but they couldn't find a central meeting place either. Shoals was there with some folks, but If you were there Benny boy, I didn't recognize you :-(
I ended up talking to this BEdger name "Kristine" I think; She asked me who my favorite blazer is, and I said 'Nate,' I asked her, and she had trouble deciding, so I asked her who her favorite non-blazer is and she said Dwight Howard, I didn't agree with her but was at a loss to come up with a better non-Blazer.
Then this older dude chimes in with all sorts of Nate knowledge (didn't know what blazersedge is) and told us this story about how Nate got pressured from his older brother to steal some eggs from this farmhouse when he was ten, and then got caught or something, I really couldn't follow his story, but this guy was really passionate about Nate being a solid dude. This was the apex of this guy's point that Nate is a class act, which I agree with, I just couldn't figure out how the guy went from, "Magic Johnson said the toughest defender he ever went up against was Nate McMillian" and "When Gary Payton and Coach Nate got into a fight, Nate challenged him 1 on 1, and beat Payton, because of his defense." To this weird, egg stealing story.
Meanwhile, parkinglotj is on the other side of this guy, and starts telling us he lost 20 lbs when Oden had to rehab, true to his word (telling us this while eating cheese fries :-). Then 'lot' starts to say that he has a knack for guessing which draft picks will get picked by whom, Nate lover and I could tell he was telling the truth. And the stories flowed like the expensive-ass red ales. I found out that parkinglotj works with my girlfriend's brother's girlfriend, what small world? :-)
Sorry about all the sideways smiles tonight, I'm just happy.
I didn't even get to kibbutz with Shoals about anything, or meet Ben because I was quite engaged in lubricated discussions, but I had a fun time.
Feel free to share your impressions of the night if you have any.

Some date promo....
He doesn’t work for 95.5. Canz set up some dating thing for the week of valentines day. Kevin goes on a date with a new girl every night leading up to Valentines day. The first girl was named Sophia and they found her at a Blazer game and she was reportedly 22. I thought it might have been BE’s Sophia.
i though she was more mike than elgin
23? my stalker memory is fuzzy and not what it used to be though.

Sorry, makes me mad. Time to clear the air, she is NOT going on a date set up by Canzano. It’s some other Sophia.

Joey
I’ll never outgrow it. Joe is too average and Joseph is business only; you can call me JIP, Joey in Portland, that’s my douche-bag name.

I had a good time.
Spoke to Bart from Blog de Rudy, along with shaking Ben’s hand and talking to him for a minute.
I also learned juicy rumors from the set of Twilight.
I suck and fell asleep watching "Teen Wolf"...
I woke up at three hours later at 9 PM and realized that there was no way I was going to do anything but walk the dog, make a quick dinner and watch more TV/read a little bit.
Sad but true.
it's cool
no one will see this post anyway since it’s already been moved out of place by a bunch of masturbatory trade posts.

i probably would read them if they were consolidated
there would be less repeating too.
i suppose i’m guilty of going into OT/Junkville on most posts i comment rather than always following the rules too so i can’t hate you trade machine junkies too much :-)

we could have an LA blazer party
it would be like 4 of us… hehe
we should all try and crash a l-team game, and sit in a similar section. at least so they guys would have somewhere to look to
It was "mascot night" at the Rose Garden, which apparently translates to a dozen inflatable versions of various NBA mascots being chased around the arena by Portland's "Blaze", which is some breed of rapist dog. -PostingandToasting

Glad to hear your comments on the egg stealing story...
That totally confused me!
Also, gotta say, your “new dad” kind of ticked me off. I know I’m young and female, and that might not fit the profile of your average blazer maniac, but dude asked me how I felt about Nate, I responded thoughtfully, and he immediately questioned my grounds for having an opinion. My assessment was pretty much “Nate rocks, but I have a little bit of constructive criticism.” I’m certainly not in the “Let’s go to Nate’s house with torches and battering rams and drive him out of town” camp! Anyway, his only response was “Did you ever PLAY basketball?”…followed by a series of questions about when and for how long. Never responded to what I had to say, and then went into those stories about Nate’s character which, honestly, were entirely baffling.
You left out the one about his brother kicking his butt to get him on the plane to Seattle when he got drafted by the Sonics, because he didn’t want to go. I’m still not sure what I was supposed to learn about his character…
Anyway, it was great meeting you – I hope there are more BEdge shindigs in the future! (..hint, hint, Ben..)

(…and so I emerge out of lurkerville)
hey!
yeah that dude only got weirder after you gals left, but giving us that pizza was pretty nice (for those who don’t know what the ‘new dad’ thing is, I called him my new dad because he gave us pizza and seemed to like the cut of our respective jibs, almost as much as beer).
i left a lot out of the story because it was late when i wrote it. that guy talked so much that i couldn’t remember half the stuff he was blathering about.
see you around.

BTW
I also thought dude was out of line with that “did you ever play” thing, don’t let that kind of crap discourage you from sharing your opinion on here, or anywhere else, you said a lot of stuff that made sense and as much as i hate trade talk i couldn’t argue with your whole bosh trade fantasy :-)

Here is my post about getting B-Rex before the draft
I called my shot in the day of the draft thread, but I can’t find it. I swear that it’s there though.

I have no proof about picking Webster and Roy
But I didn’t follow as closely as I do now. With Webster, I heard a interview before the draft. Webster was with (I think it was) Ian Ferness. After the interview Ian said that Portland just couldn’t let a guy like this go. Obviously Webster was the wrong choice, but I agreed at the time that he would represent Portland well.
I learned from the Webster draft. Draft the best player period.
The following year was the “Draft the Stach” year. I loved Morrison, but I was not convinced that he would be a great pro. I wanted the best possible player at that point. Even though Webster was set at SG, I wanted the best possible player. I thought that moving up was going to be impossible. (I was wrong.) I wanted to move down and get Roy (who I thought was the 3rd best player) along with another pick. I thought the top two players were clearly better than the next 5. But I thought that Roy was the best of the 5. It seemed that he wouldn’t go high though. I wanted the extra pick too. (I don’t remember who I wanted with that extra pick)
As I said at the bar, I’m no GM. I should have gone best player, Webster’s year. I had no idea that Portland had soured on Z-bo so much that LMA was a target pick. And I actually proposed that Portland give up Webster in order to get B-Rex this year.
