Super Bowl Open Thread

So I hear there's a big game today.

Vote in the poll and feel free to use this as an open thread for SB XLIII discussion.  Or you can make arguments about why basketball is better than football and why basketball fans are more knowledgeable than football fans. It's an open thread.  Go ahead, post photos.  Hold a vigil for Bynum's knee.  Go to town.

It's Super Bowl Sunday.  All bets are off.  Just keep it clean please.

Cards

aslong as the refs dont screw them like they did the last time the Steelers were in the superbowl. As a Seahawks fan I still hold a grudge against the Steelers. Go Cadinals

Sorry, I’m still a little bitter from Super Bowl XL.

Steelers!

Ben is the man. Steelers now two-for-two in the new millennium in proving they are the better team, resilient, and deserving (six-time) Super Bowl champions.

You play to win the game. No excuses.

Only the weak whine.

Go Steelers. (and go Niners too…yeah Mike Singletary…wooo….oooweee!)

Best of all: Go Blazers!

by Go Blazers! on Feb 1, 2009 9:19 PM PST up reply actions

Seriously, did you watch either Super Bowl?

Only the weak whine, Seriously? How many bad calls does it take for you to see what is plainly there? Did you see the Stealer punch (and not get tossed) a guy on the ground? Did you see the other thrown punch? He only got 15 yards? Shall I go on?
But the last play is the most obvious one. No automatic replay in the last two minutes? That play also had a unsportman-like conduct flag, which would have given Warner a first down and a couple of shots at the end zone from about the 30 yard line.
They shouldn’t even play the game. Everyone knew the Stealers would win again.

by parkinglotj on Feb 1, 2009 10:37 PM PST up reply actions

are you kidding?

first of all cards had no business being in the playoffs, they were not even among the top 6 teams record wise in the NFC, and got home court advantage against two teams despite having the worst record among nfc playoff teams. AND they played in the worst division in football. You appear to be bitter, friend. Is it because the Cards, like the seahawks, are a cinderella team? I am a 49er fan myself, and even though I appreciate the advantages that come with playing in such a weak division, I can’t bring myself to feel bad for the cards when they had no business being in the playoffs in the first place. It doesn’t matter that they won 3 games and almost won the super bowl, that doesn’t validate the injustice of keeping teams with better records out of the playoffs because they play in a tougher division. The irony of all this is that I hate the Cowboys, but I like that kind of injustice even less. Face it, Arizona did not deserve to win the super bowl.

by premthegrem on Feb 2, 2009 3:57 AM PST up reply actions

Look,

I explained my reasons why the Cards have no business talking about their grievances in the Super Bowl. As far as I’m concerned, when you’re not only the 7th best team in your conference and make it into the playoffs at the expense of teams with better records, but then play TWO home games in the playoffs against teams with better records, I call shenanigans. The same thing happened in the AFC with the Chargers, and I don’t hear anybody moaning and groaning about them (I’m certainly not). I don’t call this super bowl a sham. It is Karmic.

Please understand, I’m not belittling the accomplishments of Fitz or Warner in this postseason. I don’t really have any partiality to either team, my loyalties are firmly with the 49ers. What I’m saying is that Cards fans don’t have the same right as other super bowl losers to gripe about their loss, because of the fact that they got into the playoffs in spite of having an inferior record to 6 other teams in the NFC, and then played home games TWICE. I feel bad for Cards fans since they lost a gripping game in which they had a solid chance at victory, but if I was a Card fan, I would consider this fact before venting about officiating injustices. If it were the niners in place of the cards, I would maintain the same position about it, except I would feel that painful gut-check from losing.

Anyway, I have explained my reasoning. Why don’t you?

Both teams played hard

Not really a “fan”, but I always liked the way Pittsburgh and Green Bay plays. Snow games were the best. I could waive a terrible towel tonight, but I don’t think I have one in yellow. Maybe orange. Last year’s helmet catch was awesome too, partly because I knew Bill Simmons was having a heart attack at that second. And Super Bowl pre-game and halftime shows are always fun. I’m hoping for more wardrobe malfunctions, or maybe someone falls off the stage.

Today is also the launch of ESPN America, a pan-European US sports channel (actually it’s just a rebranding of NASN, but it feels more like the real one now). Shouldn’t it be named ESPN Europe then? Unfortunately they don’t have the NBA rights, only NCAA basketball. So this year I can watch the Super Bowl on two or three channels. That feels weird. I know a few years back as a child this and the Oscars were the only shows I stayed up for. I had to watch on a really grainy broadcast with commentators who knew less about football than I do, and that’s not much. Sometimes they had local and the original audio, but not always. Only problem: They don’t show the ads here, but probably they are not that good anymore anyway. Some years they repeat ones from the previous Super Bowl during a few breaks, which is kinda weird. 1999 was fun, with all the Dot Com companies blowing their yearly marketing budget on one ad that everyone had forgotten the next day.

So anyway, no Internet needed tonight to watch the game. Except maybe to post a bit here during half-time or so.

Go Cardinals!!!

…but my (figurative) money is on the Steelers. I liked the Cardinals at first, but too many people are on the Card’s bandwagon (6/10 SI columnists picked them… they’re the favorite? really?) and that not only costs the Cardinals serious “nobody believed in us” points, but it give the Steelers a good share of “nobody believed in us” points of their own. When the Steelers are already the more talented team, that’s pretty much gonna do it.

Clip on Interception Return

Didn’t it look like a Steeler clipped Edgerrin James at the 32 yard line on the return? James was the last player with a play, the blocker pushed him in the back and extended his arms straight, and the runner had to veer back into the field and jump over James.

of all the ads this was the best, there was a second or so pause after the miller high life ad

and seeing as how miller only paid for one second of advertising and there was at least a second or two of dead air time after they played the miller ad, why there was a pause I don’t know, I suppose it was tough to incorporate a one second ad, this pause means the company lost as much air time as the ad itself, thus breaking even so to say, and giving it back to the man a little bit,

tonight i shall drink the champagne of beers, anyone against it becoming the official beverEDGE?

if cards hold on

then Fitzgerald should be the MVP. Though they will probably give it the QB as usual.

wow

can’t ask for a much better last 5 minutes to a game. Pittsburgh goes 90 yards in 2 minutes, they deserve it.

Wow, what a finish.

I was a Steelers fan as a kid (Franco Harris, Lynn Swann, Mean Joe Greene), but have been a diehard Iggles fan since 1980. This was a hard game to watch, as I have a serious inferiority complex when it comes to the Steelers, but could NEVER root for the team that spanked my beloveds. Can I hope for a tie?!?!?

9 catches, 131 yards, and the biggest two catches of the game on that last drive.

Kurt Warner’s arm was moving forward. No question. I don’t care about either team, but that was an incomplete pass.

Oh well.

Like I said, I don’t care about either team. But am I imagining things calling that a blown call? I mean, if it was a fumble, the ball should have gone straight down. That ball went forward.

they didn’t even want to look at it. Boo!

could go either way, likely hard to overturn.

but in that situation, you have to review ANYTHING that is even debateable.

I was rooting for the cards and that wasn’t the play that ticked me off. It was the wide variety of ticky tack fouls earlier in the game that did it for me…

if you are talking about the roughing penalties

ALL of them were legit, including the roughing the passer and holder penalties. The passing penalty was legit because the defensive player extended his arms out and pushed Big Ben to the ground a second after the throw, giving no indication that he was even trying to avoid contact once the ball was released. The holder penalty was also legit since the defender did run into the holder after the play was made, and it didn’t affect the point differential as Pitt was unable to capitalize.

Some people are claiming...

that the last play was reviewed and NBC just missed the announcement, but I don’t buy it. There wasn’t enough time between the play and the next kneel down for a review. How they don’t review that play is beyond me.
