Interesting stuff on Truehoop today
1) Cav's lose to Grizzilies - we aren't the only ones ; and a possible warning on what could happen if you rely on just one guy at crunch time.
2) The Nets Terrence Williams and Twitter - Twitter may be a cool tool for someone in Ben's line of work, but for most people its primary use is as another way to advertise what a dumb ass you are ; btw, loved the Nets response.
3) Knicks 0-9 with Robinson getting 19 or more minutes - and winning with him getting under 12 ; so where are the BEdgers who were calling for KP to sign Nate? Maybe we should show Steve Blake a little more love than we do.
4) Atlanta Hawks - provided their fans with a much rockier start with their strategy to develop young talent than the Blazers have, yet look at them now ; perhaps we just need to show a little patience.
(Tried this as a Fanshot, but it wouldn't go through.)

why does the Knicks playing better without Nate mean we should give Blake love?
Blake has been literally the worst starting PG in the NBA this year, with the possible exceptions (possible) of Duhon and Udrih. That is not an exaggeration.

Yeah, that struck me as incongruous too
it’s apples to oranges — both guys have been lousy.
"One of the bright spots of the young season has been rookie point guard Jonny Flynn, whose name sounds like he should be the lead character in a Broadway Musical. "What are you doing here, Jonny Flynn?" I'll trya stab at the analogy
If NY loses when Nate Robinson plays more minutes and are a better team when kept in a bit role; conversely that Blake playing lots of minutes correlates well with winning while the Blazers lose more when he sits more of the time. I don’t have the number to back this up but still I saw the analogy as a juxtaposition rather than as a comparison.
i hope u didnt try that on the SAT

The correlation is that much of what we see by fans clamoring for this player or that ...
… often involves stat lines or focusing on specific individual skills a player might have. Steve Blake is never going to be a guy who compares well. But when it comes to playing basketball rather than sitting around and analyzing it, a guy like Blake often is far better to have the the so-called better skills player.
Nate Robinson probably kicks Blake’s ass 9 out of ten times playing one on one. But I’ll take Steve Blake on my team every time over Robinson.
hakkaa päälle !
I'll agree on that.
However, I’ll take any of about 50 NBA PGs over Blake as my starting PG, including two players who are currently Blazers.

Yep.
Blake should be 3rd string (for PG depth, he’d still play due to injuries) on this team right now.
someone is gonna have to explain the juwan howard signing to me again.....

Portland Trail Blazers President Larry Miller is good friends with Juwan Howard.
I deem it cronyism at its finest.
Dear Paul Allen:
Fire Nate McMillan & hire Jeff Van Gundy.

Hmm - lets see...
1.Could be wins. At least two games this year were won with timely baskets, rebounds or steals by Juwan. That would be 14+% of our wins. These are times when only Juwan was available at his position.
2. Could be veteran savvy – he does not have the hops but he does not make many mistakes and knows the tricks that the young studs fall for more often than not.
3. Could be the production – Of Blazers playing now only Joel and Martell have a better block % than Juwan and only Jerryd has a better TS% than Juwan.
4. It could be the locker room/practice floor presence where the Blazers learn some of those veteran tricks and can lean on a peer who has played extensively against most of the opponents and in most of the situations they encounter.
5. The available alternatives were not as good,
These are big dividends from a veteran minimum player in the 15th spot. For me it is an easy call. I am appreciative of Juwan’s presence.

Good argument. It’s lame that you’re getting flamed with snide remarks for that. He was a good guy to sign given the alternatives.
Keep your expectations low and you won't be disappointed.
Primary numbers 2 and 4
He wasn’t expected to play a significant on-court role, but was hopefully going to teach our young big men some of those veteran tricks, etc. Any production was going to be a bonus.

You can blame it on my disdain toward him, but I'd rather have Steve Blake than Nate Robinson.

You can try to rationalize it all you want.....
……Blake should be sitting or on the trading block.
He is not playing well.
His PER is down nearly 5 points from last season.
His defense is marginal at best.
He is not a long term fit with the team.
He is in the way of the guy who may be the long term answer for the team.
He will be a FA at the end of the season and should be traded now to get whatever value we can.
The injury to Oden only makes the case stronger. We should be thinking long term.

I'd take Blake (2008=-09) in a second
But this year so far, you might be right — he’s near the bottom in the league.
Jksnake99 tell em how you realllllllly feel about this.
lol…

Sometimes the truth hurts
Blake is a fine fellow from everything we hear. He is not a starting quality PG at the NBA level. It is increasingly apparent that last year was a career year from a guy whose has a career PER of 12.0. This season he is below 10.
Of all the things that puzzle me about Nate and how he coaches, his stubborn refusal to sit such a mediocre player is No. 1 on my list.

We have long disagreed on Bayless.
I have looked for flaws in his game almost to a fault at time. I still see a lot of the same problems in his game that I have always complained about. But there really isn’t an argument I can make at this point in favor of Blake. He has been awful, Miller been ok, and Bayless has been good. The handling of Steven Blake and the other point guards has surpassed the point of ridiculousness and ended up in the land of pure craziness…

would you call it: Rudiculous?

I disagree...
But only in that Udrih has clearly been much much better than Blake this year. Actually Beno has played pretty well. PER up around 17! (Beno isn’t the best PG on the Kings though… that would be our own Sergio, who is a top 5 PG in the league by PER this season albeit in somewhat limited minutes. And if you’ve caught any of his minutes in Sactown, that’s no statistical oddity – the kid has been killing it whenever he sees the court. Brace yourself for the stomach punch that will happen when this kid finally gets minutes somewhere, because he’s going to put up big numbers.)
I would add that unfortunately Steve has been one of the worst point guards in the NBA this season – not just one of the worst starting point guards. As Snake said, there are at least 50 or so PGs who have been better, including two Blazers. Steve is the 58th ranked point guard in the league in terms of PER. The only starting PGs who are even close to as bad are Duhon and Fisher.
The funny thing is that these numbers aren’t THAT far off Steve’s career norms. He’s had two outlier seasons (08-09 and 05-06) of effective play, and other than that, this is about the same as he’s always performed.
Q: Is Greg favoring his knee?
Frye: He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors.
Look at the Hawks?
I don’t think the Hawks are anything to aspire to be. If we’re patient, we can one day be the Hawks?
The Hawks may or may not have a season that’s as good as the Blazers had last year.
It goes without saying that most teams in the NBA have been managed worse than the Blazers. The Blazers got two very productive guys in one draft and another very productive guy in the next draft. That ain’t easy.
I agree that Blazer fans should be patient. The reason is because 4 of the best 6 players on the team are out for extended periods. This will obviously be a down year.
But that’s no reason to be patient about inexplicable decisions like playing Blake more minutes than Bayless… the injuries make it even more essential, both now and for the future, that Bayless should get major minutes.
Q: Is Greg favoring his knee?
Frye: He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors.
...i think you misunderstood. i think his point was developing players pays off in the end. i.e. play bayless let him make a few mistakes, you wont be sorry.

I like your comment on item #1
LeBron is like Brandon Roy on steroids (maybe literally), plus he’s taller and faster. The guy is practically unstoppable going to the hoop; he might as well put on the Superman uniform, because he’s the one—not Dwight Howard—who plays like he’s from the planet Krypton.
Yet even with THIS guy on their team, the Cavs haven’t been able to get over the top. Clearly, the “let our star coast all game long, then give him the rock in crunch time & get out of the way” isn’t a championship formula. Basketball is a TEAM game.
I was born in '52, and I believe in #52. Hang in there, GO.
