OT: Comcast to acquire NBC

News release

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/04/business/media/04nbc.html

and an opinion discussion

http://roomfordebate.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/12/08/should-consumers-fear-the-comcast-deal/

Blazers fans have much angst right now with all the injuires.  What better way to vent, than to unload some negativity in Comcast's direction.  I think the Blazers fan community may have some strong opinions about Comcast's word that a merger would be pro-consumer.  Honestly we should be flogging the FCC regarding this issue an not a NYtimes blog, but awareness of the forthcoming wrongs by this merger needs to be made.  Otherwise I would make this a fanhsot and not a fanpost.

The key quote:

Comcast has called the merger, which the Obama administration will have to approve, “pro-competitive, pro-consumer and strongly in the public interest,” and has said it is committed to free over-the-air TV and local programming.

How does this quote make you Blazerfans feel?  Let's make our voices heard otherwise the whole nation will be hurt by this merger.  Democracy begins by making the public's voice heard.  Contact to the FCC can be found from the following link

Speaking of comcast, shouldn’t we be hearing about a deal to stream comcast games on the web soon? Wasn’t Larry Miller going to confirm this by Jan 1? Should I be holding my breath?

make it green

What are you impressions of Roy?
"He's just a very, very good basketball player. Very smart. Very heady. He can do a little bit of everything on the court. As coaches, when we scout Portland we kind of put him in the same category as Kobe (Bryant), LeBron (James), Dwyane Wade. We treat him the same. He's that good."

won’t happen, though…

Its an evil trick to prevent us Blazer fans from watching on KGW unless you have Comcast!

Let's do it for the big man!...and Rudy!....and Nic!...and, uh, Trout, Pendy, Patty, Mo, Mr. Allen, and Nate!

NBC isn't KGW's parent company

KGW is owned by a completely seperate company, Belo, which owns a couple dozen local television stations around the company. KGW is NBC’s Portland affiliate, which is not an ownership relationship, but one more akin to being a contracted “content provider”

How did you guys win that?

As evidenced by many stations over the years changing affiliations

The last one i remember being channel 12 changing to a fox affiliate from an independant

But they were always an independant before UPN.

Lots of synidcation and local news is all you got out of KPTV when I was growing up. Still loved it though…

So does KGW's Blazer contract independent from their obligations to NBC.

Not that is matters this year but if Comcast owns NBC who trumps who in what we see on TV? Can NBC (Comcast) dictate what the content is on KGW or does KGW dictate the content and allow NBC to show their programming? I know nothing of how this works BTW…

Let's do it for the big man!...and Rudy!....and Nic!...and, uh, Trout, Pendy, Patty, Mo, Mr. Allen, and Nate!

There are likely obligations that go both directions in a affiliation agreement

however ….I know that NBC programing gets pre-empted by local programing pretty regularly (Blazer games, News ect…).

As long as I keep getting CSN

I don’t really care who owns who.

If this affects MY tv watching in some way then I’ll try and do something.

Sorry to all you guys who can’t get Comcast, I feel for ya. If you live in Portland though, its the beez kneez.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
