JD-9-12-2009///2010 Draft

Just in case..., Why not?

The first thing I´ve noticed in this Mock Draft, there´s only a pure PG in among the first 30, and he´s the projected first pick. Maybe here ends our perpetual search for the point guard of the future. Can we jump over that wall?

The second thing I´ve noticed, there´s the second best Lithuanian player in history, and he´s the projected second pick. Maybe here we give to Sabonis a second chance. Kind of.  By the way, don´t forget to donate.

The third thing I´ve noticed, the projected third round pick is a PF, just a very good defensive PF to backup LA.  Third time lucky? Maybe some God does us a favor.

I still expect the Blazers to make the playoffs

And I’m already sick of John Wall talk. It’s going to be a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooog season.

Y'know, I'm also sick of the John Wall talk. It's similar to the annoying Ricky Rubio talk from last year, ...

which occurred even when anyone knew that the likelihood of the Spaniard coming to Portland was around 0.001%. If we’re going to talk about potential draft targets for the Trail Blazers in 2010, I say we should focus on the more plausible chioces. For me, that’s Patrick Patterson.

Dear Paul Allen:

Fire Nate McMillan & hire Jeff Van Gundy.

Sincerely,

by AK1984 on Dec 9, 2009 6:10 AM PST up reply actions

Exactly

How many number 1 picks have been traded either before, during, or right after the draft? I don’t have a draft favorite now and it would probably change by the draft anyhow.

by tominhawaii on Dec 9, 2009 6:19 AM PST up reply actions

You don't think Portland will be in the lottery?

I think the playoffs are a pipedream, at this point. Pretty unlikely. Portland is in no way, shape, or form better than they were in the 41-41 season, and they’re possibly worse. Like him or not, at least Channing Frye provided rotation quality depth at the five. Right now Juwon Howard is the Blazers’ back up five, and he might be the worst rotation player in the league.

It’s certainly possible Portland slips into a 7 or 8 seed with a 43-39 record, or something like that. But the lottery is fairly likely. So while I agree with you that the Rubio talk was beyond pointless, I’m not sure John Wall is out of bounds.

Whether he would even be a remotely decent fit in Portland is another question, of course. I tend to doubt it. I think in retrospect we will realize Portland missed a nice opportunity last year to grab one of a surplus of above average point guards. Major coup for Denver snagging Lawson, who would’ve probably been perfect for the Blazers. Although, of course, Portland is now happy that it retained its first round pick…

Q: Is Greg favoring his knee?
Frye: He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors.

by KP Corleone on Dec 9, 2009 9:31 AM PST up reply actions

Even if Portland misses the playoffs, it'll do so by a relatively slim margin. In turn, the likelihood ...

of the Trail Blazers winning the lottery will be minimal at best. As it is, I’d rather focus my attention on someone like Patrick Patterson over John Wall, although you and everyone else who are interested in Wall still have every right to place your focus on him.

Dear Paul Allen:

Fire Nate McMillan & hire Jeff Van Gundy.

The John Wall talk is crazy.

The Ricky Rubio talk made perfect sense. The Wolves got him for Randy Foye and Mike Miller. The Blazers probably could have had him for Outlaw and Bayless, or something similar. He was the token overrated white guy.

John Wall is legit.

by Nick Van Excellent on Dec 9, 2009 8:41 AM PST up reply actions

The Ricky Rubio talk was crazy, too, because he'd most likely never come to Portland — as this is ...

a small-market region that employs a coach who’s misuse him — even if Kevin Pritchard had somehow acquired his draft rights. Hell, I still expect Rubio will never play a minute for the Minnesota T’wolves. For Rubio, he doesn’t need the NBA to have a successful basketball career financially. Oh, and if Rubio ever does come to America, it won’t be ’til after a big-market ballclub (e.g., the New York Knicks) acquires his draft rights.

There's been more than one great Lithuania in NBA history, although Arvydas Sabonis is the best of them.

Both Sarunas Marciulionis and Zydrunas Ilgauskas come to mind — as do Darius Songaila and Linas Kleiza, although they both played college ball in the United States — plus, there’s also Euro greats who had cups of coffee in the NBA like Arvydas Macijauskas and Sarunas Jasikevicius, with the latter also playing college ball here. Lastly, Donatas Motiejunas is compared in scouting reports to players like Andrea Bargnani at best and Nikoloz Tskitishvili at worst — which is the only thing I’ve got to judge him beyond YouTube clips — I, therefore, want nothing to do with him.

Ben said in the 'Wingcast' with Pelton before the last one that the Blazers board featured more than half all power forwards

Not surprising since in this draft are indeed a lot of good power forwards, either pure ones or players that can switch over from the 3 or the 5. DraftExpress has about 17 potential PFs in the first round mock draft, NBADraft.net 14 or 15 (one is really a bit small).

I still think we’ll make the playoffs, so no high pick. John Wall is awesome, but not necessarily for our system, and will go #1 unless he stinks it up in important college games and someone else is on fire. But he won’t drop far. Donatas Motiejunas is a very promising player, but young, so not sure this draft is already right for him, and/or the right time to come over to the NBA.

I’m not yet really in love with anyone in the first round apart Wall, though the top 9 all look like quality players and it could become a very strong draft class. NBAdraft has Davis and Warren comparatively low, I think they could go higher.

If KP continues his forward trend DeMarcus Cousins looks like a player who has size and talent and gets rated low here, he could be in our range. One model the Blazers followed recently is giving a second look to players they had in for workouts who pulled out of a previous draft. That might be true for tall combo guard Greivis Vasquez, who will have gained a lot of experience leading a team by next year. My secret player for the second round would be Alexey Shved, a very tall point guard at 6-6 who has good experience in Europe playing for elite team CSKA Moscow and its junior teams. He’s skinny though, and his shot while extending out to the 3 needs some work.

Another one would be http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Giorgi-Shermadini-5166/ who plays for Panathinaikos and is a legit center.

by medmelon on Dec 9, 2009 8:05 AM PST reply actions

Tiger's ladies.

the Blazers won’t have a top 15 pick.

by DrivetheLane on Dec 9, 2009 8:07 AM PST up reply actions   1 recs

They won't?

I think the Blazers will be right in that neighborhood, picking probably around 12-15. We have to come to grips with how depleted the roster is. This team is less talented than Memphis right now.

Q: Is Greg favoring his knee?
Frye: He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors.

by KP Corleone on Dec 9, 2009 9:34 AM PST up reply actions

I think 45 wins is still in play.

Brandon is that good if he plays like it and gets his mind right. Rudy will be back for the second half. The starting lineup is the same as the 41-41 year. I don’t think Juwan is as bad as some do. If Dante and Bayless continue to get some burn (or increased burn) I think they can be effective. Plus who knows if there is some trade coming that will help depth. I think a 7 or 8 seed is very much in play.

by DrivetheLane on Dec 9, 2009 9:41 AM PST up reply actions

A bit of an over-reaction maybe?

A team that has Roy and Aldridge is not less talented than Memphis.

Columbus here...

Turner is an interesting talent. He’s the most versatile player in the draft. I was surprised to see him emerge as a top three talent, early this season, but he is impressive. He draws some comparisons to Roy, actually. But he’s bigger and a much better rebounder.

His fall was brutal. He should make a full recovery, but broken vertebrae are never good.

that's cool.

just throwing it out there in case anyone’s interested. I may be downtown that afternoon anyway (Powell’s and Addidas) so I may get there early no matter what. are you reserving a space or are we meeting anywhere in particular?

I might be able to get there a bit early, but nothing sexy, like 4.

that's what i was thinking too.

330 or 4, depending on if people were interested in bowling before the game. if you think you may be there at 4, i’ll aim for that time. we could toss back a few before the minors arrive. haha

heck yeah. I got a long night that night, and it’s been a long week. I could probably get there by 4:30ish, depending upon my pedal speed.

I think it could be true, considering how many teams don’t play with a quality starting SG and how many have good PGs. It kills me that the Blazers never seem to find one, or don’t play him.

not really

consider we have arguably the best PG of all time playing Point Guard for the New Orleans Hornets.

There is also D Will, Tony Parker, Steve Nash, Rondo, Derrick Rose, Arenas (when healthy), Billups, Kidd, Devin Harris, Monta Ellis.

Also some pretty solid rookie PGs: Jennings, Lawson, Flynn has been OK for a rookie, etc.

Lou Williams also was having a great season for Philadelphia before he got hurt.

Then SG has who?

Kobe, Wade, Roy, Ginobili (when healthy), Joe Johnson, and who else?

properly in such a way that people see a group of folks just talking for a bit and then all of a sudden to a big choreographed number, finish, and then keep talking naturally, it would be hilarious and give people a story to tell forever.

too bad we only have two days to plan for friday night. hahaha

Good thing I thought-shielded these comments so he can’t read them.

I just feel that since I am Capt. Positive, if I feel down, Jake would usually be ultra-down, but I think we’re all mostly in the same place.

I am not much of a mainstream county guy but I had to put this in my book

By Toby Keith,“I’ll never smoke weed with Willie again”
I always heard that his herb was top shelf
I just could not wait to try it myself
dont knock it till you tried it well I tried it my friend
and I’ll never smoke weed with Willie again
 chorus
I’ll never smoke weed with Willie again
my party’s all over before it it begins
you can pour me some old wiskey river my friend
but i’ll never smoke weed with Willie again
I learned a hard lesson in a small Texas town
he fired up a fatboy and passed it around
the last words I spoke as they tucked me in
was I’ll never smoke weed with Willie again
 chorus
There are a couple more verses but you get the idea

depends

Idealy, i have a melody in my head, that i can work out with an instrument and paper, if not i just plunk out my usual chord/scale experiments, make up new ones until i find something, usually i base a whole piece on one melody or phrase, and a couple main intervals/motifs. Lots of times once i get at least 8 measure of something i like, the rest of the piece comes pretty easily, and i see a lot of paths to take, the trouble is finding that first trailhead marker

We have two assistant coaches who could take over the team.

One is a loyal Nate assistant who will follow his orders, likely without question. But he’s not likely to progress upon his current role.

The other is a promising young assistant that other teams have interest in, but is staying in the pecking order behind the solid assistant who won’t take any chances.

Why does this feel so… familiar?

VANCOUVER, Wash. — Firefighters helped remove a boy’s tongue from a flag pole at a Vancouver middle school on Wednesday morning.

A crew from Clark County Fire District 6 was called to Alki Middle School at 8:58 a.m.

Firefighter Mike Swanson then applied warm water to the boy’s tongue to get it unstuck.

The firefighter crew gave the boy hot chocolate and cookies and he required no further medical attention.

“This is a first my 18 years with the fire district,” Swanson said.

A news release from the fire department said that even when issued a “triple-dog dare,” they advise people against putting their tongue on a metal pole in the cold.

The fire department released a blurry photo of the incident to media in order to show the pole but hide the boy’s identity.

Regarding the Washington Huskies, Quincy Pondexter is an undersized 3/4 who can rebound at a high ...

rate — particularly on the offensive glass — as well as score in bunches, but is unable to spread the floor due to a lack of range. I, therefore, compare him to a poor man’s Luol Deng, since Pondexter is shorter — although he makes up for being 6’6"/6’7" tall by having a reported 7’0" wingspan — and is still raw on offense compared to the one-time Duke standout.

Dear Paul Allen:

Fire Nate McMillan & hire Jeff Van Gundy.

Quincy Pondexter is a hard-nosed 3/4, while Kyle Weaver is a point forward on offense and ...

a 2/3 on defense. So, even though Pondexter’s game might not translate well to the NBA, it’ll be like how DeMarre Carroll is struggling thus far with the Memphis Grizzlies instead of how Weaver is having trouble cracking the OKC Thunder’s rotation.

Dear Paul Allen:

Fire Nate McMillan & hire Jeff Van Gundy.

Sincerely,

After looking at DraftExpress, it compares Quincy Pondexter to Luc Richard Mbah a Moute.

I don’t quite like that comparison, though, as Pondexter is much more proficient offensively than Mbah a Moute — albeit less intense on defense — so, with that noted, I’d go with Hakim Warrick as a more similar player to “Q.” As with Warrick, Pondexter draws fouls at a high rate, rebounds proficiently, and combines those good qualities with flaws like poor defensive fundamentals on occasion.

Dear Paul Allen:

Fire Nate McMillan & hire Jeff Van Gundy.

I've had some fun trips to the SE. My drive to Arizona was memorable because the car decided that it was going to do everything possible to kill me.

I had to stay with an Indian and his family when I went down there. All of the motels were booked so it was either sleep in my car and melt to death or find someone to crash with. It was a really cool experience.

I'm not sure what kind Indians they were. It was a little city on an interstate. I was coming down from east of Powell Lake and the Moab. The people at the Holiday Inn said that there wasn't any place to stay for at least 70 miles.

The wife of the guy I stayed with overheard the conversation with the receptionist in the lobby and said that I could sleep at their place. I definitely remember staying on the reservation. Any idea what tribe they were from?

I had a similar experience in eastern Arizona

When our car had trouble some guy told us we could camp on his aunt’s land. They were Navajo, for sure. The deal was, we had to play with the aunt four-year-old granddaughter, who was driving the older lady nuts. The lady was extremely shy/reserved, but she clearly loved having someone else deal with the kid for a few hours.

I've had some crazy times down in that neck of the nape

When I moved to Colorado, I still had a warrant outstanding from my arrest referenced above, so me and my friend had to drive around utah to get to boulder. We drove straight through so Cal, into Zona, and at around the 50 hour mark, we hit four corners.
I was driving my 1970 volkswagen bus, and had not slept the entire way. It was a sunday, around 7 am, and I was so tired I thought I would just shut my eyes for a second. I slipped instantly into a dreamlike state, inbetween consciousness, and sleep we drifted off the highway at 60 miles per hour. I remember that I could still feel the steering wheel in my hands, and the bus started bouncing as we kicked over and through the sagebrush lining a gulch adjacent to the road. Just as we started climbing the side of a massive berm, I thought to myself in the dream, “Who’s driving?”, and immediately opened my eyes to find my friend George stuck in a pantomime terror face, so scared that he couldn’t make a sound, looking at me like what the ____ are you doing?!!

I narrowly avoided flipping the bus, and guided it slowly back down the embankment into the depression of the gulch, where it thoroughly dug itself in, to the middle of the wheels, buried in mud.

We stepped out slowly to catch our nerves, and assess the situation, and after seeing it, and realizing we were stuck, we post-holed our way up to the road. Luckily some natives were driving by into utah, on their way back from picking up some booze in Zona, and they pulled over.
“Hey, you need some help?” they asked
“We got a chain, we’ll pull you out for twenty bucks?”
I said absolutely, as anyone who’s been there realizes there isn’t a telephone within 20 miles of that place, and it wasn’t exactly a bustling interstate at 7 in the morning on a sunday.
So they hooked up the chain to their monte carlo, and after a few good, hard tugs the bus was freed, and I angled it up to the road. I got out my wallet and pulled out a twenty, and the older indian said to me “There, that’ll teach ya to mess around in injun country!”
I stumbled on my words and before I could respond, he said “Nahh, we’re just messing with ya, we love you guys!!!”
And with that, they popped the trunk of the monte carlo, revealing four cases of whiskey in the trunk, and each grabbing a fresh bottle, twisted the liquor stamps free and each took a huge chug.

marijuana paraphenalia possession

they really wanted to get us on drug possession, but all I had was a year old bag of seeds and stems, that no one would ever smoke anyways. They were talking about putting us away for a year, for that. But I looked at the cop and said." Man, what are we gonna do with that? Plant it here on our way through?" I told him that we ran out of weed two weeks before, and we wished we had weed. When his partner went to start up our paperwork, the cool cop threw it in the trash.

Wall plays a little bit out of control at times (7 tos), but his shot is much better than in high school

He starts to become useful in a dribble drive half-court offense. Plus his first step and open floor space is unstoppable.

Oh, and with regards to folks who think I've got a love affair with Caucasian American basketball players, ...

I hope the Portland Trail Blazers DON’T draft someone like Kyle Singler, Luke Babbitt, Gordon Hayward, or any other unathletic white combo forward. I’ve got no use for that troglodyte look-a-like Luke Harangody, either.

DraftExpress quoted a scout who compared DeMarcus Cousins to Eddy Curry, although Cousins ...

is a better reounder and shot blocker than Curry. That’s not saying much, though, and Cousins still isn’t a banger by any means and too undersized (i.e., shorter than 7’0" tall) to be a true center.

If I had to compare Cousins to anyone, it’d be a backup center who shows wildly inconsistent flashes of talent and times in which he looks like a D-League scrub. With that said, I’d go with Nazr Mohammed — who, oddly enough, is having a career year so far with the Charlotte Bobcats — as a solid comparison.

The one Caucasian American guy who I like is Matt Bouldin, but only as a mid second-round pick. I ...

think he’d make a cheap, serviceable third-string shooting guard. Bouldin, who’s got great handles for his size and is an efficient shooter from all over the floor, is a fun player to watch do his thing out there.

On offense, Matt Bouldin can mask Jerryd Bayless' distributing deficiencies in the backcourt.

Bouldin is also a superior ball handler to Rudy Fernandez, which is a huge deal beside Bayless.

Definitely worth a 2nd round flier

although Rudy stays! Jokes aside, I think Bayless is getting moved, this is the optimal time for him to get some PT, and if he can’t, it makes me think the coaches don’t think he can help here. Disagree as I may with that conclusion, I think that’s the way it is

Y'know, it pains me to say it, but I feel that KP has a man crush on Jerryd Bayless.

If anyone gets moved this off-season, it’ll probably be a disgruntled Rudy Fernandez.

And, if Fernandez is on the way out to a ballclub like New Jersey — which owns future conditional draft picks from Golden State* — then Bouldin would most certainly make a nice replacement.

Patrick Patterson is a better rebounder than Brandon Bass and more proficient on ...

offense than Jason Maxiell, as well as has way more range on offense than Leon Powe.

Patterson is also a limited passer, but does control his turnovers; that’s another one of Landry’s qualities, as Luis Scola is much more of a facilitator for the Houston Rockets at the 4 spot.

Now, Patterson is much lengthier than Landry regarding wingpsan and standing reach; thus, he’s more like Paul Millsap defensively. All in all, Patterson will be a well-rounded, productive pro.

UConn 61-60 with 30 seconds let

Calipari calls a play where Wall passes it to the 2 guard coming off a screen at the top of the key, then has Wall run around the 3 point line and the 2 guard hands the ball off to him so Wall is at full speed, then Wall runs right around his defender and gets fouled by a big, as he is falling down he throws the ball up and somehow gets it to fall for an and-1. Could we get the Knicks pick from Utah for Rudy? They didn't have a good SG in ages (since ca. Hornacek).

Just theoretically, I doubt they trade it and I doubt KP trades Rudy or Bayless this year.

by Norsktroll on Dec 9, 2009 9:24 PM PST reply actions

Rudy Fernadez isn't even close to having that high of trade value. Fankly, Fernandez is mighty overrated.

The Utah Jazz, by the way, should keep that pick and draft Cole Aldrich, who’s the second-coming of Andrew Bogut.

It's never safe to assume back problems will only be temporary, while Rudy Fernandez ...

has yet to prove himself as a “high scoring starter.” Additionally, Fernandez’s shoddy man-to-man defense cancels out his decent off-ball defense and makes him average overall on that end of the court.

Cavs are in a slump according to their beat writer, and can be beaten if you apply defensive pressure. Go Blake!
Teams are starting to figure something out about the Cavs, if you get physical with them defensively they are going to turn it over. A lot. This has happened in each of the last two nights. Neither Memphis or Houston are good defensive teams. But they forced the Cavs into a lot of turnovers by simply applying pressure, getting up into them like Mike Brown would say. The guy who seems to really be feeling this is LeBron, who has 15 turnovers in the last three games. He’s forcing passes and trying things that aren’t normal for him.
* Mo Williams is officially in a slump. He’s 21-of-59 over the last five games shooting and his defense has been suffering because of it. Though as I wrote before the game, Aaron Brooks is a tough cover.

I have a pretty good story to tell. Hubby got an email from his father tonight.

My father-in-law, who lives in a small town near Ocala Fl., has a neighbor who is a retired lifer marine and an ex-NY cop. The neighbor was sitting in his car in a mall parking lot waiting for his wife to do some shopping when he saw 3 punks eying his car and gesturing at it. Punks strolled up to his open drivers side window and started telling him what a nice car he had, then mentioning his jewelry. Then one of them told him he should hand over his jewelry and his wallet and he wouldn’t get hurt. So the neighbor, he’s 75, reached between his legs where he’d hidden his .357 SW when he saw them eying him and trained it on the perps face and said “This is the only thing I have for you”. So the punks, being idiots but not stupid, started screaming and disappeared in every direction. Hahahahahahhahaha!

Awesome. My friend Joe has a similar story.

He has studied martial arts his whole life, and is also a bad-ass. Coming out of a bar, two guys started a fight with him for no reason at all, pushing him and threatening. Joe stayed cool until a guy threw a punch. He swiftly landed an elbow and broke the douches orbital bone ( an incredibly hard bone to break ), sent him to the hospital, and his friend was too scared to do anything else. The cops were making fun of the 2 idiots who started the fight.

but due to how well Durant had played that year there was still some doubt as to who should go #1 (we all know this…). I believe that the performance in the 2007 Title Game made the decision easy.
