More than anything, this is where the problem lies with Steve Blake.

If he’s not shooting efficiently, then there’s no use for him out on the hardwood. As a floor spreader at the off guard position, he did fine last year. This year, however, he’s been a complete invalid.

Remember...

He has been out with an injury for a long time. Give it a few more games when he starts to oil off that rust. We’re only 20 + games into the season. We’ll start seeing a more productive player soon I think.

Blake on the other hand I am not too sure about. He has started almost (?) every game this season and has been inconsistent. What happened to Mr. (fairly) Reliable from last year?

I would be more willing to believe that

if Martell had ever “hit his stride” at some point in his career, but I honestly can’t remember him ever stringing together 3 solid games. Believe me, I want him to do well very badly, but roster spots at the SF are kind of valuable.

Yeah, but

you still don’t get in-game experience by sitting on the bench. Examples: what to do in clutch situations. Things like that. He has definitely developed his jumper more though, but you can do that outside the game.

by CaptainSexyJacob on Dec 9, 2009 6:41 PM PST up reply actions

I think it is both

He needed to prove he can earn the minutes, but it seems like he has AND he will have a learning curve to go through to be a combo-guard next to Roy.

Just like Oden needs in-game minutes, Bayless does too, and maybe more so because of the many layers a PG has to deal with in a game.

Blake.

39 minutes of missing most of his shots, then hitting a dagger 3 in the 4th quarter.

He got abused on pick and rolls by Price and Ford, and picked up his dribbles forcing other players to shot against the clock.

I don't mind him not starting

But 39 minutes, Bayless playing so little, ditto for Miller… it’s just weird.

Especially now Miller off the bench makes some sense since we are depleted, but this is a great chance to play Bayless where he is natural— as a scoring 2 combo guard.

for 3 though?

he’s so sweet off the dribble. we know that. but that’s a play he creates.

Roy in crunchtime is the one making plays and needs guys that can catch and shoot like Rudy, Blake, Dante.

I’ve yet to see good consistent rotation out of J-Bay’s jump shot in those scenarios. that’s why he needs more PT IMO…

I also think this team COULD have 2 or 3 go-to plays rather than 1 but…

On replays

The total lack of being able to rewind, fast forward past commercials, how much it lags, the delay between small and fullscreen, the picture quality… I ain’t picky, I just watch something that plays smooth and is useable.

I can’t believe how bad watching a replay on it is.

Well, for me

The picture quality is the least of my complaints.

The inability to fast forward or rewind, especially when I miss a game and am just watching the replay, annoys me to no end.

Otherwise, it often has connection concerns and lag and is less reliable than pirated streams, as long as the streams don’t get taken down by the NBA.

And that team has no go-to dudes on it, especially on the perimeter, and he’s trying to shoe-horn in the triangle, which I hope they stick with.

Tough situation for him, so it’s hard to judge, but I’d think going for a closer shot, or into Jefferson or Love for a turnaround, woulda’ been better.

LMA

A very encouraging game from LaMarcus. When the Blazers decided to get him the ball on the block he dominated the game. He either scored or had the Pacers scrambling to pick up our shooters on the perimeter. If he and Portland can keep that up we’ll be better than many people are projecting.

THAT is the reason Trevor Ariza should’ve been our #1 free agent target this year. No one is a better perimeter defender on LBJ. Few if any are better overall.

Also we did have Batum.

"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely

by skywaker9 on Dec 9, 2009 7:35 PM PST up reply actions

Ariza is a physical defender

One perimeter defender is not good enough for an entire team. Nic, even when healthy can only do so much. Ariza gives defensive diversity, and 48 minutes of an elite perimeter defender. It’s like we have at center with Przy and Oden. Never worried about D inside. With Ariza we wouldn’t have had to worry about perimeter D sucking. At worst it would ever be, even with Blake would be above average.

A great perimeter defender is a great perimeter defender

Having 2 of them on an entire team is hardly overkill. With fouls, injuries, and 48 minutes in games, 2 are necessary.

by as11osu on Dec 9, 2009 7:41 PM PST up reply actions

Also, Ariza is a much more physical defender

which is why he’s so effective versus LBJ as opposed to guys like Prince whom LBJ absolutely abuses.

by as11osu on Dec 9, 2009 7:42 PM PST up reply actions

Honestly, having two shutdown wing defenders is a pretty nice thing to have.

Plus Portland can easily afford to have lower offense in a spot or two, if you get great D. (And your whole team isn’t hurt.)

Ariza is a LBJ destroyer

I cry on the inside when I see him do what he has always done, and realize we opted for a 30+ year old point guard that doesn’t fit Nate’s narrow view of what a point guard is supposed to do. How can you let Morey beat you to Ariza when you had 10 million waiting? Atrocious.

by BeaumontTXBlazerFan on Dec 9, 2009 9:40 PM PST reply actions

How do you end up a Blazer fan in Beaumont? Just curious.

Roy should flourish – his patented drives in the lane and +1 foul calls are totally available with Oden out. Aldridge plays better when Roy draws the D inside on drives as well.

Clearly, there is a way to run the offense with Oden, but that was really happening, so Portland is back to the offense it knows best, and has been highly effective with. Losing the supporting cast hurts, but Roy and LMA are the engine that makes the offense go. And despite all the hate of Blake, he looks to me like a better fit for the very deliberate Portland half court offense. Miller is the better player, but not necessarily the better fit. That’s an outside perspective, for whatever its worth.
