International players (Nic & Rudy) with injuries playing overseas..
Let's look at timelines. You tell me as a fan if this concerns you or not.
Rudy Fernandez' sore back stems primarily from Ariza's flagrant foul on 3/9/2009. Nicolas Batum injured his shoulder on 3/11/2009 vs. Dallas at home. Both players reported soreness continued throughout the rest of the season until we finally succumbed to Houston in the playoffs on 4/30/2009. When the season ended there were no red flags about either player. No media stories about how bad either injury might really be. Team doctors never told Rudy in April, "You might wanna get a second opinion on that back. It's been sore now for nearly two months. Get it checked out again before heading off to Europe."
At this point both Nic & Rudy were thinking ahead to Eurobasket from 9/7/2009 to 9/20/2009, instead of resting from a long NBA season. The question is, should we have held them out of the tournament? It's a hotly-debated question throughout the league. Do we let them play anyway, despite knowing for a fact that both players are sore from 82 games of grueling NBA basketball? Or do we state that country is more important than club and let them play anyway? Do we have an obligation to our young players in protecting them for the season we're now struggling through? Mark Cuban held Dirk Nowitzki out of the tournment so he could rest. Why don't more owners take this stance? Paul Allen is dealing with cancer as we speak. Doesn't he deserve more than a skeleton of the team we had last year? Makes me wonder how involved he was with personnel decisions during Eurobasket.

Now, I'm not claiming that Eurobasket is the sole reason Nic & Rudy need surgery. But it was clear before they went that both of them were struggling with soreness. Nic was even called back to Portland on 8/17/2009 so the team could re-evaluate his "ailing shoulder". Team doctors and Blazer's front office types sent him back pretty much right away. They called it a "shoulder contusion" at the time and cleared him to keep playing. Hell, most people don't know this but Rudy had accupuncture on his back in Europe for the tournment. Is this raising any red flags for anyone else? Or is it really just me?
Why are we risking our international players exacerbating their sore bodies by letting them play in Eurobasket instead of resting or looking at surgery as an option in the offseason? We could have both Nic and Rudy right now if the team had been more cautious. It's one thing to lose Oden again at this point. We can't prevent that from happening. But we have control over guys playing overseas in the offseason. We could have said no, stay home and rest just like Brandon Roy is doing. But we didn't and now here we are dealing with the aftermath of what looks like it will be a really frustrating season for Rip City faithful.

Good points!
I am wondering if these are the only two examples around the league?
Let's do it for the big man!
Pau's recent injury is unrelated
He was out a month due to a hamstring injury recently. He did hurt his finger during practice a month before the Eurobasket and missed all the “friendlies” leading up to it but different injuries.
The first thing they should do is change the whole staff
I know they’re professionals, and we’re sitting on the sidelines and don’t know the details, etc. etc. etc.
But the results speak for themselves. This is a comedy of errors. Something’s got to give.
Martell comes back for ten minutes and supposedly breaks a different bone in his foot? Um, ok. If you say so.
Greg comes back with a chipped kneecap, and the same kneecap explodes off a simple jump, and that too is a coincidence? Uh…
Nic hurt his shoulder, kept playing, didn’t get surgery all summer, and then finally realized surgery was necessary just prior to the season? Come on….
Rudy experienced the exact same pattern of events? This is getting ridiculous.
I would just start over, and recruit a whole new team. At some point, there’s bad luck, and there’s chronic mismanagement, misdiagnosis, and mistakes. This smells like a lot of both.
Q: Is Greg favoring his knee?
Frye: He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors.
By team, of course...
I mean training staff

at least no one is shooting the star center's foot with pain killers
and sending him back out on the court
but other than that, this is 1978 all over again

Maybe its the gym at the practice facility?
or the Rose Garden arena floor?
Let's do it for the big man!...and Rudy!....and Nic!...and, uh, Trout, Pendy, Patty, Mo, Mr. Allen, and Nate!

Can't fault their love of country ...
but it is a little disconcerting that they’re able to tough it out long enough to get through the summer games, but then have surgery when the NBA season rolls around.

Rudy also pulled a hamstring in Eurobasket, perhaps he was compensating?
This reminds me of young pitchers who threw hard for the World baseball tournament back in February then suffered arm surgeries during the regular MLB season

Yeah ... but
Seems like Rudy’s back was still hurting at the end of the NBA season (don’t remember if I heard anything about Nic) so kinda wonder why they didn’t have him get it checked out and fixed then. I mean, there was 3 months before the Spanish National Team even started practicing so plenty of time to get this procedure done and healed beforehand. Backs are tricky so just would’ve seemed prudent.
One thing to keep in mind this next summer though is that it’s the FIBA World Championships, meaning that the US team will be there, meaning that Nate will be there so it’ll be a lot easier to keep tabs on Rudy and Nic’s health. I’m pretty sure that if there is a problem, the Blazers can pull them from the competition … I know the Bulls pulled Joakim Noah from the French team this summer.

Rudy had some discomfort last spring, especially shortly after the fall he took from Ariza’s hit. But he didn’t mention having serious back/leg pain on his blog, or when he was interviewed by Casey at his youth camp, earlier in the summer. I think the medical staff was hoping that rest would take care of his discomfort, and it wasn’t until he was elbowed in the back during practice a week or so ago that the pain became unbearable and the MRI was done

This isn't just Euro players...
I remember at least a couple examples, Shaq being one, of players needing surgery/rehab, sitting on their asses all summer and then having surgery right before or during training camp. The attitude is, “I got hurt on the job, I’ll do my surgery and rehab on the job.”
I think there should definitely be some kind of salary reduction/cap relief for NBA players injured while playing internationally, and that includes Team USA.
What about players who get hurt
playing DDR in the offseason? :)

shaq is shaq
Over the past decade +, Shaq has been the most important person in the league in terms of winning championships. If a coach or GM angered Shaq by telling him to get in shape or do surgery in the offseason, Shaq could just demand a trade, and basically ruin the team (since you couldn’t get fair value for Shaq). Rudy is not Shaq. Batum is not Shaq. Had Nate and KP said, no Eurobasket or else, they would have been forced to listen.
In what way would they be "forced"?
Wouldn’t it depend on whether or not their contracts had any language regarding international play? Can’t really imagine Rudy signing anything that forbade him from participating on the Spanish team.
I’m sure they could ask nicely, the same way that I’m sure Nate asks Rudy to play defense, but I don’t think he can be forced to do anything not spelled out in his contract.
i agree
but it all comes down to the meaning of “force.” I’d submit the consequences for crossing the team on the issue of a disagreement regarding fitness should be the same as the consequences of not playing defense or showing up to camp out of shape. Nate could bench him, or just put him in the doghouse. The Blazers cut the checks, and should remind Nic and Rudy.
Of course, this is all speculation, since we have no idea what the medical staff told Nate (it would appear the medical staff thought it was OK for him to play in Eurobasket).
Pretty sure that the main reason was "Let's stay healthy until we sign that extension"
Not that I blame him for that since I would do the same. No more summer off for B-Roy, though.

And Oden, once again, is a rookie, so non-stop fast break basketball is like fast-forwarding a song while he's trying to learn the lyrics.
Rudy has got valuable experience playing international games.
He has played in four years a World Championship Final, a Eurochampionship Final, a Olympic Final and an another Eurochampionship Final. Two gold medals and two silver medals consecutively. That experience will show its value the season we go to the Finals.

According to OP, both injuries occurred during NBA season.
Not sure I understand the logic of the post, since both Rudy and Batum got hurt on this side of the water.
I can see faulting the dubious Blazers’ training staff and doctors for not catching these things at the end of last season.

The point is..
The point is that both players were suffering from soreness and lingering injuries when the season ended on 4/30/2009. Why wouldn’t both players rest and let their bodies recover? Why go overseas and beat themselves up in a tournament? The Portland Trail Blazers are paying both player’s salaries. They should be healthy for training camp, not STILL dealing with injuries from the previous season. There’s a reason we call the offseason the offseason. Players should be taking time OFF. If Nic & Rudy had been resting or sought out surgery after last season we’d have both of them playing right now. Nic’s shoulder would be better. Rudy’s back would be better. That’s the point of my post.

I agree. Now both of them are "resting" during the NBA season. So maybe next
summer isn’t such a big deal. They will get into playing form and be ready for the NBA season next year. But the following years….REST in the summer.
A compromise needs to be reached...
maybe NBA players shouldn’t be allowed to play competitively in consecutive summers? That would allow guys like Rudy and Nic to represent their countries in the World Championship and Olympics, but also give them some summer’s off so the team that pays them BIG money doesn’t suffer. Of course, if a player’s country is on the cusp of qualifying then they might complain about missing qualifying tourneys. But, they also need to realize that it’s not fair to expect their millions of dollars if they’re sitting out during the season after aggravating injuries over the summer.
And, please please please don’t play in the olympics Brandon. Please.
