Trade Drawer - To trade or not to trade?
It's pretty apparent, that we have a serious talent gap on our team. Even when considering Rudy shouldn't miss too much time, we just don't seem to have the horses to get us much further than a 7th or 8th seed and a first round exit at best. We have little to no production from the small forward position. And if we shift Rudy or Roy to the small forward we are at a significant disadvantage on the boards and defensively. Our depth at the power forward and center positions is limited as well. So, what to do? Do we part with some of our talent to bring in a small forward/power forward or power forward/center? KP doesn't like to do short-term thinking moves, but if he doesn't do something, I could easily see us slipping back into the lottery - I don't see anyway we get out of the first round of the playoffs.
One player I think we could target:
Rudy Gay - he is going to be a restricted free agent this summer and Memphis may not want to pay him. Maybe they're thinking let's get something for him now, rather than just let him walk away?
We'd have to give up some serious talent in exchange - but Gay would give us another legitimate offensive threat and is very effective in transition offense. This may cause a problem, b/c Batum will be squeezed out for minutes, but Gay should be able to slide over to the power forward postion which would open up minutes for Batum.
Otherwise, I don't know which direction for Portland to go. I just don't see a lot of good options out there. Maybe the best move would be to stay put and let the players get healthy?
What do you think? Do you see any solid moves to be made for Portland? Or should they just play out the season and try to make a run again in 2010-11?

it's doable
I’m not sold on the idea of trading for Gay, but I actually think it is doable. The most obvious proposal is Andre Miller and Travis Outlaw for Gay and Marko Jaric’s horrible contract. If Memphis doesn’t want to resign gay at the end of the year, this would be a way of getting a solid veteran leader at PG and getting out of a bad contract (Jaris is owed 7+ million this year and next). Memphis might actually go for that (especially if the Blazers are also willing to part with a pick or the rights to a foreign player).
This is only worth doing, though, if the Blazers are willing to keep Gay. He would only be a restricted FA, so the Blazers would be a good position to keep him. In the absence of high offer sheets from other teams (which is possible) we might be able to keep him at a very reasonable price. If a team like Minnesota comes in an makes an offer, we’ll have a chance to match it. The question then is whether it’s worth it.

We shouldn't makje any trade that we wouldn't make if everyone was healthy.
If we were down only one player and thinking of a deep playoff run, then yeah, trade, but no amounts of trades will make this year anything but a lost year. We should use it as a developmental year and see what the off season brings.
Now, that might go out the window if the guys way over perform and look to be in line to get a good playoff seed – very unlikely – or if some team just offers a stupid bargain, but basically, the Blazers should just play on and let the chips fall.
you didn't offer up any trade idea
you just said rudy gay was a good player and might leave memphis.
i say that chris bosh is a good player and might leave toronto.
what’s next?

Blazers need to get more intense, not less
Gay would be wrong for Portland for many, many reasons. For starters, he’s a scorer who’s not that great at scoring, and mediocre at everything else. He replicates some of the good things Brandon does (just not as well), and he adds nothing on defense. He’s got a laissez faire attitutude on a team playing laissez faire basketball right now. And the Blazers wouldn’t want to pay him what he wants to be paid.
I think the Blazers should trade Blake’s expiring contract and the little bit of cap space I believe they have left for some depth down low, unless KP wants to give the lottery one more go round. This would have the dual purpose of forcing the inept coaching staff to play the 21-year-old who’s already better than Steve anyway. (Don’t get me wrong, I am a Steve Blake fan, but his time has come. He’s a fighter, and he’s been great, but he has outlived his expiration date for this team.)
Even before Oden went down, the Bayless train was gaining steam. Now, it couldn’t be more obvious that B-Rex needs minutes. It’s inexcusable not playing him under these circumstances. I’m not sure I can consistently watch this team when they’re floundering like this without giving Jerryd at least 25 minutes.
I would be fine with trading Dre, in addition to or instead of trading Steve. The irony is (no kidding) I would rather have Sergio than either of those guys right now. You don’t know what you’ve got… ‘til it’s gone.
Dre for Brandon Bass would maybe make some sense for both teams. Except that the Magic may realize that a point guard needs to be able to hit a jump shot in their system.
Q: Is Greg favoring his knee?
Frye: He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors.
worst than not playing BRex is not letting him play when he's on the court.
look at last nights first time he is in +5 in 2 min.’s -13 when ball not give to him and he is left in the corner
Trade w/ the Knicks
Eddy Curry, Jared Jefferies, David Lee, Nate Robinson
for Andre Miller, Jerryd Bayless, Steve Blake, Travis Outlaw, and Pendergraph.

if nate robinson makes too many dumb mistakes for dantoni's system
there is no way he could play for Nate

The Knicks may be in full-on salary dump mode, but they'd need a quality big back if they were making Lee go away.

With Rudy down
how do we make a trade? Now, we can’t afford to trade any guards.
The only way we can afford to make a trade is to trade an injured player. That mortgages the future, unless it is Travis (since he’s an expiring contract anyway).
People want to trade Blake for someone like Brandon Bass, but that just leaves us with three guards.
Much as you hate to say it, we’re deeper at forward than at guard. Right now, we have Martell, LMA, Dante, and Juwan, and we’ll have Pendergraph back soon.

Not necessarily
If Rudy is out for a prolonged period of time, it would just mean that any deal involving Blake or Miller would need to pull back a reserve guard in return. On Orlando, there that would be someone like Anthony Johnson. Also, if you include Outlaw in such a trade you free up a roster spot which could potentially be used to sign a free agent guard (albeit probably probably not a very good one).

Yes, there are things we can do
We can also trade Euro rights or a draft pick.

Figure out the assetts you'd part with first. My list:
1. Blake
2. Martell
3. Euro rights to Claver
4. Outlaw
You’d be rebuilding around (in order of need I think):
5. Pryz/Oden/________
4. Aldridge/Pendergraph/Juwan
3. Batum/Cunningham/______
1. Bayless/Miller/Mills
2. Roy/Rudy
Seems to me we need to fill the need for a 4/5 body given Oden’s uncertainty and Pryz getting on a little. I’d make a move for another 3/4 as my second need.
Look at what we’d give up. I can not see a reason to sweat Blake, Trav and Martell here. All 3 are playing ONLY because of their unpredictable sharp-shooting…which is how we have lived and died. It is time to end that era. But that requires BRoy to stop the flaming turd ball offense he has espoused too…those 3 are his main recipients.
Never sell when you are desperate. I'd rather see them eat this year and trade
from a position of strength, assuming we are ever strong again.
Soo.....
….now both seasons are shot?? How do you get outta bed in the morning?
" Welcome to the Bedge....where good, is never good enough"…Rudiculous
Blake for Sergio. Seriously.
I think Sergio fits better in the second unit. I also miss the alley-hoops to Rudy.
Unfortunately, I don’t think the Kings would do it.
