These are meant in jest.  I don't want to belabor the point that the mood around here ranges from depressed to grim to optimistic, so I'll just say that I hope today we can attempt to be happier.  It's not a game day, let's try to make each other laugh.  We don't have to forget basketball all together, this is a basketball blog after all, but let's do our best to band together as a community of people who love our team, no matter what.  I'll leave with a quote from Bill Cosby:

"Through humor, you can soften some of the worst blows that life delivers. And once you find laughter, no matter how painful your situation might be, you can survive it."  - Bill Cosby

I wish a happy day to you all!

You guys remember the Disney film The Black Hole?

My current attitude as a Blazer fan is quite similar to that of Dr. Hans Reinhardt at the end of the film. I’ve crawled inside my robot shell and brace myself for somewhat lengthy stay in what appears to be Hell.

I must have seen this flick a million times when I was little but didn’t remember the ending to be so intense.

by Sexual Tyrannosaurus on Dec 8, 2009 3:50 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah I just read that

It’s been 20+ years since I’ve even thought of this movie let alone watch it. It’s kind of a weird feeling going back and watching something from my childhood after such a long layoff. I mean I never questioned where Reinhardt was at the of the film when I was little. I just thought he was on an asteroid or something.

I wonder if I’ll pick up anything new from The Beastmaster.

The ending is unforgettable and definitely scarred a few kids.

I’ve always felt the scene where the asteroid is rolling toward them is an iconic sci-fi image from the early days of the modern era.

Also, beyond the ending, the scene where BOB defeats Maximillian gives me shivers, with the metallic scream (possibly implying that a person was still in there)

by Timmay! on Dec 8, 2009 4:15 PM PST up reply actions

Asteroid scene is great

I miss the old sci-fi films where they used the smaller scale models instead of just computer generated stuff.

Me too

Black Hole had good effects for its time, EXCEPT how wobbly the robots float. That bugged me as a kid, and as an adult.

It looked too much like they were held up on strings, which they were.

Oh, and the design of everything was great, EXCEPT for the large cartoony eyes on BOB and VINCENT.

The way you guys talk about it, you’re acting like it’s Robocop or sumthin’!

About 10 minutes after I get up in the morning I get a pretty serious pain in my right hip sometimes all the way down to the knee,it lasts about 10 or 15 minutes and then goes away till the next morning.

by 92wastheyear on Dec 8, 2009 10:47 AM PST up reply actions

I've hurt my back twice and had sciatica pain

Both times it came from lifting a heavy object and twisting at the same time. The first one was from getting my sister-in-law’s suitcase off the baggage thingy at the airport. She said it was heavy, but jeesh. You know what was in the suitcase in addition to clothes? The collected works of George Bernard Shaw (hardcover edition), two old-timey film projectors, and a bunch of frozen walleye. Huh?

Anyway, the second time, I got rid of it quickly by not sitting on my butt for five days. No computer work, no eating at the table, walking instead of getting in the car, etc. That was several years ago and I haven’t had problems since. I swear yoga helps.

by Corvid on Dec 8, 2009 11:16 AM PST up reply actions

LeBron does yoga and credits it with being able to roll better when falling to the floor

Last season he once crashed seriously on his back and head and didn’t miss any or much time.

by Norsktroll on Dec 8, 2009 11:33 AM PST up reply actions

Lots of basketball players do yoga.

I think the NBA even has a lecture/seminar about it at the rookie orientation. I bet a whole bunch of the young guys roll their eyes at the thought of doing yoga though . . .

by Corvid on Dec 8, 2009 11:44 AM PST up reply actions

can you do yoga if you're really really

inflexible or do you have to have a certain level of flexibility to begin with?

by DrivetheLane on Dec 8, 2009 11:47 AM PST up reply actions

Oh yeah, sure.

For most people I know, a lot of flexibility comes relatively quickly, once they start going to classes. The trick is not getting all “bent out of shape” (sorry) about what other people can do, but focusing on your own body. It’s all about exploring what your body can do, over time.

by Corvid on Dec 8, 2009 11:57 AM PST up reply actions

i'm pretty good at exploring what my body can do.

if i raise my leg while sitting to a horizontal position, i can feel a stretch. i’m super inflexible. I should try some yoga at some point. i bet they offer community classes and stuff.

by DrivetheLane on Dec 8, 2009 11:59 AM PST up reply actions

Do you belong to a gym?

I’ve actually found some good teachers through my gym, and at least there you can try several different classes to find one that fits. No matter where you go, there’s a big variation in teachers, both in style and knowledge.

If you do decide to take classes, make sure you talk to the teacher beforehand, just to let him/her know that you’re a newbie who feels really inflexible.

Don’t start with the Bikram classes, for sure. That’s hard core.

by Corvid on Dec 8, 2009 12:13 PM PST up reply actions

no, i don't belong to a gym.

my intentions are far better than my actions in this regard. Thanks for the advice though. I do appreciate it.

PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Trail Blazers guard/forward Rudy Fernandez will undergo a procedure today to alleviate pain in his right leg, General Manager Kevin Pritchard announced Tuesday.

Fernandez, 24, will undergo a microdiscectomy to relieve pressure from a nerve root in his lower back that is causing pain in his right leg.

A timetable for his return will be determined after the procedure.

I think the hardest thing about being unemployed is getting the ball rolling day in and day out, especially in light of the daily drain from looking for work. But, if you can get on a system, like continue to get up early, take care of business early, then you find the whole afternoon is available to you. If I lost my job, I’d spend all day reading and painting; it’d be amazing.

im also

going through some pretty rought times personally. So this morning, i totally started to cry , as did the other woman I am leading the project with, when a coworker brought in an XBOX and like 20 brand new games for it.

We are going shopping for them this weekend with the left over 100’s of dollars we have in donations , we have 5 food boxes filled and gift certificates from almost every store imaginable. Literaly toys everywhere on the “collection” area. They all have brand new bed sets too.

We’ll be getting them a xmas tree and decorating their house on the 18th. Im so relieved and overjoyed for them, these kids really deserve it.

that's awesome.

we did this at my office too. There’s just 5 of us. The lame thing is that the people that are organizing the adopt a family thing put restrictions on how much you can actually give so they can try to maintain some equity among all the families (some get more than others). Totally lame. We’ve been thinking up ways around this.

That's wonderful, Sophia.

The company I used to work for had a similar practice but it was employee driven, although there was also a company sanctioned one. All year long each shift would hold raffles and auctions and whatnot to collect money, thousands of dollars per shift. At Christmas we would get suggestions from local charities and then each shift would select a family and descend on them a few days before Christmas with truckloads of toys, trees, food, basic necessities, clothing, gift certificates, everything, sometimes even appliances like stoves or refrigerators. Unfortunately, a couple of years before I quit the company decided they couldn’t condone the employee driven efforts anymore and told us if we wanted to contribute we could select a name from their “giving tree”. I can’t remember now specifically what their bogus reasons were but it had to do with legal liabilities. Sorry to be Debbie Downer here.

#52

by Cablinasian on Dec 8, 2009 6:12 PM PST up reply actions

Yup, just like Westbrook has had

He’s had some abysmal 10 turnover nights, but they are reaping the benefits of his development already, and even during while he was learning.

I don’t care what no one says, Bayless doesn’t need an extra inch on both of his arms to be a good perimeter defender, he’s got the body/quickness/aggressiveness/mentality for it. And he’d be, obviously, a good scorer who can get to the rack (and therefore, the FT line) at will.

Ain’t playin’ for titles this year, gotta get some good out of this season. Play Bayless.

Bring him off the bench, don’t make him the starter just ’cause, wait for him to earn that gift (and another carrot to dangle in front of a dude like Bayless is always nice).

Sigh

things are rough right now
I flew up to the bay for an interview on Sun night, flight got delayed, got in late, everywhere was closed had to eat fastfood in my hotel room. Go to the interview, find out I’m meeting with the head boss first only after we sit down and I ask him what he does (HR forgot to put his title on the interview list) and then proceed to get talked down to.. go thru 7 more hours of interviews and get left in a room waiting for my last interview to come to the room for 1 hour.. it was 40 degrees outside and the AC was on. I freaking BOMBED that last interview.. I mean BAD. So I leave the complex and drive to the airport, it starts hailing, then snowing. It last snowed in SF in Jan 2007, so people are panicking on the road. I say screw this, im going straight to the airport. Go there wait 2.5 hours for my flight to leave only to find out they cancelled it. Something about Las Vegas stopping flights and jacking up the entire Southwest schedule. So I get on another flight back to Orange County at 8:40, which promptly gets delayed until 10:30. I have been in the airport since 4:00. The flight then gets delayed until 11 pm, which wont work since Orange County has a curfew. There are no red-eyes there. No one can take off after 10:30 and land after 11:30. (the bay is a 1 hour flight from OC).. so they round us up and ask if any of us need hotels. We all say we do. Thats too expensive for SW, so they get a plane from SFO (I was in San Jose) and bring it over to fly us down at 10:30. We get there and the airport inside is all dark except for us leaving.
So I spent a crappy day feeling horrible and bombed my interview because I damn near froze to death.
I get home, and I see the Blazers lost to the Knicks. I mutter well hell what else could go wrong. Enter Rudy Fernandez’s back.

It was described as left knee patella tendinitis in the injury report, but he was placed on IL for close to 4 months after initial diagnosis of 4-6 weeks. Usually tendinitis means out 1 game to 2 weeks according to my data. So either it was more serious, or the Hawks had something to gain from freeing up his roster spot.

That reminded me of Mark Pope, who used to bounce on and off the list all the time. One of my favorite basketball quotes: :

yep.

i’m guessing many people took a bedgcation.

can’t say i blame them. the JD last night was turning pretty grisly when I went to bed. I was hoping this one would help people get in a better mood.

by DrivetheLane on Dec 8, 2009 2:44 PM PST up reply actions

Some of us just drove to Sonic for lunch and did some shopping. :)

But yeah, last night’s JD started to head downhill. I understand though… bad weekend, bad game night.

I presume the JD dried up yesterday because everyone started chatting.

It was weird to see that even you’re running down at this point. When it comes to the Blazers, you’re Mr. Positive.

I'm not THAT down

I’m kinda a bummer in general right now, but I’m just joking mostly.

I get bugged by what seems like a lack of effort, and Oden’s unlucky injury bugs me more than any injury I can think of. And I am very cold.

by Mortimer on Dec 8, 2009 3:46 PM PST up reply actions

you mean in the thread with Dave?

perhaps. i didn’t see a tinychat link (I think DS bailed on that JD) so it probably wasn’t that. All the sorrow finally came to a head and exploded last night and I think there are most likely several people still recovering from that. Time to start bringing good stuff back though. Every win will be extra sweet now!

by DrivetheLane on Dec 8, 2009 2:49 PM PST up reply actions

I was out and missed the live chat

I didn’t open it, so I missed whatever happened in it… any sadness or goodness from Dave or whatever…

#52

by Mortimer on Dec 8, 2009 2:51 PM PST up reply actions

i just skimmed it.

I think Dave’s main impetus for the chat was to attempt to assuage some people’s feelings about the team. But I didn’t read through it all that closely.

by DrivetheLane on Dec 8, 2009 2:53 PM PST up reply actions

I was actually thinking of the JD...

I popped on this morning, and there were only a few messages in 6 hours or so. So I presume everyone was in tinychat.

The front page chat slowed down fast too, but that’s pretty normal. When I wrote above, I forgot about the front page chat, I was thinking of tinychat when I typed that.

Good news: KP explicitly said Bayless has not asked for a trade

Bad news: He wouldn’t tell us if Bayless had asked for one.

by Timmay! on Dec 8, 2009 3:21 PM PST reply actions

I'll explain further...

KP usually plays things very close to the vest. Even if Bayless walked into his office and said, “I want to be traded, TODAY!”, KP would tell the press “Bayless is fine, there’s been no request for a trade”.

If he sways otherwise, Bayless’ trade value would immediately drop like a rock because people know Portland is looking to trade him.

Today's sporcle quiz

Can you name the song by its closing lyric?

I got 12/16, it’s hard but it’s not unbearable if you listen to popular music over the years.

The younger you are, the harder the quiz might be. There are plenty of 70’s and 80’s songs mixed in.

Meh, Mike Miller is more efficient than Rudy Fernandez.

Miller picks his spots better than Fernandez, too, so in some ways the “difficulty” part isn’t a good quailty with the Spaniard. Again, though, I like Fernandez, but just argue that Miller — who’s both big and strong enough to physically to body up small fowards — is an underrated role player.

Yeah, I tend to think a lot of people like Rudy Fernandez for the "flair" factor. Fernandez is also ...

a solid role player when healthy, but I wonder if he’ll be happy with that role over the long haul when he gets back to action. Next off-season, I’d be okay with trading Fernandez and signing a free-agent Mike Miller to a two-year deal — with a non-guarnateed third season — worth the MLE.

Lol, that KP interview his great. He basically says Dwight is full of it with his rumors about Bayless getting shopped or wanting out.

KP seems really high on him. At the very least he keeps the cards close to his chest and doesn’t let anything come on Bayless’ trade value, but I really doubt he plans to move him any time soon. Sounds rather like some pickup off the scrap heap of bought-out players and players still in Europe and the DL around the deadline if needed.

It is getting to the point where you have to consider that maybe Sergio is a decent shooter...

I don’t buy 48% by anymeans, but somewhere around 40% seems reasonable. I posted them mainly to point out two things: 1) just how awful Blake has been this season, 2) how Nate really does seem to kill pg’s confidence. I have little doubt that Sergio’s horrid shooting in portland was due to his lack of confidence on the floor. And his lack of confidence was a direct result of Nate IMO. Anywho, less Blake, moar bayless sounds good to me…

Who'd become the head coach?

1. Bernie Bickerstaff moves up to the top spot.
2. Pete Myers has another go-around as interim head coach.
3. An ex-coach outside the organization like Doug Collins gives the NBA another whirl.

Yet, if Collins came in as head coach, he’d probably bring in former his former lead assistant Brian James, as well as maybe even get old-timer John Bach to come out of retirement. Bach, however, is already in his mid-’80s, although Tex Winter kept going until he had a stroke at age 87. Another option would be if Collins could get his son, Chris, to leave his job at Duke and join him in Chicago.

by blazeraddict on Dec 8, 2009 7:38 PM PST up reply actions

Regarding top-rated PF prospects, here are some modern-day comparisons.

Derrick Favors : Amar’s Stoudemire (Extremely athletic and efficient on offense, but lazy and not focused defensively.)

Al-Farouq Aminu : Josh Smith (A lot of raw talent and outstanding help defense, but little refined skill.)

Ed Davis : Brandan Wright (A lot of potential, but little production.)

Donatas Motiejunas : Andrea Bargnani (From watching clips, it looks like we’ve got another soft 7’0" tall Euro headed over to America.)

Now, considering where the Portland Trail Blazers will likely pick next year, none of those guys will be available still. That’s fine by me, though, because I’d still rather have Patrick Patterson, who reminds me of Carl Landry and would be the right kind of 4 — for he’s efficient offensively, as wel as tough on the boards and defense — to compete with LMA.

Yeah, I think Patrick Petterson will drop somewhat due to him lacking ...

Other guys with more upside (Aminu, Davis, Favors, Greg Monroe, etc.) will go higher, but Patterson is going to be a solid pro, exactly what a contender sooner than later needs.

Ben Gordon played awful defense and shot the Chicago Bulls out of the playoffs last season.

This season, however, Gordon won’t have to worry about any of that, because the Detroit Pistons will be staying home this postseason.

Check out Ray Allen's stats in the 1st round.

I think you’re mistaken as to who played awful defense. Bulls miss his offensive production, Rose can’t go anywhere because the lane is clogged.

I’m not particularly fond of Gordon’s playstyle, but I can see the impact he made for the Bulls.

I still think Phil D. Johnson of the Utah Jazz should've gotten that job last year, but VDN somehow got ...

that gig. Now, though, I’d advocate firing VDN and trying to sway Doug Collins back into coaching. Anyway, this topic reminds me of my following comment from shortly after Labor Day.

http://www.blazersedge.com/2009/9/8/1022102/how-strong-are-the-blazers#20960376

Looking back on it, I was way too hard on Mike Woodson and Alvin Gentry. That’s particularly true for Gentry, who’s gotten Phoenix back on the right track as a regular season wonder that’ll flame out come playoff time. While that’s not perfect, it’s cetainly better than bombing miserably like Terry Porter and missing the playoffs altogether.

Regarding post players, I've finally decided the other day that Cole Aldrich reminds me of ...

Andrew Bogut. I thought about Brook Lopez at first, although he’s more of a face-up/pick-and-roll scorer on offense — which is why he can play the 4 — while Aldrich is pure center who scores often with his back to the basket like Bogut. With that said, Aldrich wouldn’t be able to play next to Greg Oden like Lopez could’ve done if he were here. All in all, Aldrich is a traditional 5 and Lopez is a 5/4 hybrid.

If Thabeet can become a defensive force and Mayo/Gay/Z Bo

learn how to share, I think they have the talent if they fill out the roster properly. Gasol could be a fringe All-Star, and I really like Mike Conley. In terms of pure talent, they have 5 “+” starters and a defensive nightmare off the bench. The thing is, for those their 3 big offensive forces (Mayo, Gay, Zack) to be successful they each need to realize they aren’t superstars. Unfortunately, I think that might be hard to convince them of.

Always supporting Greg Oden.

by blazeraddict on Dec 8, 2009 7:42 PM PST up reply actions

#52

by Cablinasian on Dec 8, 2009 7:39 PM PST reply actions

Lawler's a good dude, just not that good of an analyst.

Oden really didn’t get enough credit for his play early this season, as KP2 and Ben mentioned in the Wingcast. KP2 gave him a little love prior to the injury, but we didn’t hear anything from Berri or Hollinger until he got hurt. And of course the minutes and slow pace kept anyone who wasn’t a stat geek or a Portlander from noticing.

I know next to nothing about piano, i know some guitar scales and chords

Never took any piano lessons…I like to mess around and try to compose my own stuff but I suck.

I know enough bass guitar to where I can play with a band if I have the music in front of me. Not a stud but I’m decent

Acoustic/Electric guitar I know some chords, and have memorized a few songs, but I’m not anywhere near considering myself a “guitar player”.

I was starting to practice a lot the 2 months before I moved to ‘Couve, but since I got here I haven’t touched my guitar :-/

right, but I mean scales not in the sense of how to perform them on a guitar but actually knowing all the scales.

AKA D major scale: D E F# G A B C# D, where the 1-4-5 are major chords, the 2-3 are minor, the 7 is diminished and the 6 is the relative minor.

To illustrate, the chords in D major are then D, Em, F#m, G, A, Bm, C#dim, D.

That’s the stuff that makes instruments easy to self-teach.

by Cablinasian on Dec 8, 2009 8:55 PM PST up reply actions

I know the 1-4-5 pattern on bass, but I don't really know

why it’s important. I just know it sounds good and you can basically start 1-4-5ing in almost any song and make it sound good hahaha.

Yeah, taking a few lessons and learning the stuff like that would probably help.

I had a buddy who tried to teach me, but he plays everything by ear. He’s a beast….any song he hears he can just play…but he’s really hard to learn from because he doesn’t know what he’s playing..he just…does it.

by prezofdeath on Dec 8, 2009 9:25 PM PST up reply actions

the problem with constant 1-4-5ing is that it gets to sound super repetitive when every song is given the same very melodic treatment.

Seriously, you don’t even need lessons. Just sit down at a piano and start figuring out scales (whole step, whole step, half step, whole step, whole step, whole step, half step for major scales) and then relate them to the keys you are playing in. It will make sense after a while.
